Opposite Sex - Hamlet
DT016
Dull Tools
12inch26.08.201626.AUG.16

PopRock

Two albums in, with the link between each moment of slurring spoken word, piano ballad, and dischordant 'fuck you' song becoming less and less clear, we all ought to be asking how, in 2016, Dunedin is still spewing out bands as strange as Opposite Sex. Is it all the native psilocybin The isolation The musical 'legacy'

Strange feelings come out in strange ways, as tends to happen in a city of misera- ble winter, depression, and a uni populace crawling with the sorts of fucking jocks about whom the songs basically write themselves. Lucy, in 'Supermarket': "Make me cute, make me sweet, make me fragile and petite / So I can be pushed around by some dickhead who likes rugby, beer and meat". Swipe right. Tim's standout moment, 'Tasman's Puke', spells out in no polite terms his take on NZ's colonial past. And with Reggie's voice drifting away with his guitar in 'Regicide', it makes it abundantly clear that Opposite Sex have as many ways to do songs as they have songs.

That's because, in spite of the patented 'sound' of their city, the real Dunedin influence on Opposite Sex is an ideology. There's punk, of course, as usual, but the bizarro lens of Xpressway -- 'the Dunedin label' -- what with its Marxist dues and DIY purism, is the band's heftiest inheritance thanks to how many of their peers come from this older, noisy school. It only helped their underground repu- tation that certain big-name ex-members of the Fall and the Pastels wound up being big fans of this obscure New Zealand band.

Whichever way you have 'em Opposite Sex have already left a permanent impres- sion within today's younger underground generation. Besides that one fact, there aren't many unifying features of a band so scattered, but so brilliantly chaotic, and by no means confused. But that's just what you get from a band with so much uncontrollable inspiration, with imagination that's like not unlike mashing one's hands against the keyboard of existence and expecting Shakespeare to come out. Judging by HAMLET, it's just funny when it sort of does.

* First time on vinyl

"I was obsessed with this record when it was first released and it still blows my mind -- a forgotten classic of American underground rock" -- Mark Lanegan

"Caustic Resin made a bunch of great f***ing records and The Medicine Is All Gone was one of their best. The riff (and everything else) of the lead track 'Cable' is from one of the finest songs not only of 1998, but ever. You need this record." -- Dylan Carlson (Earth)

Caustic Resin announce the deluxe reissue of their celebrated 1998 album The Medicine is All Gone. Recorded in 1998 with engineer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, Built To Spill), the album was a highpoint both sonically and in terms of songwriting in the 15 year career of the Boise rock trio.

Initially released on Alias Records, after many years of the album's high repute passing, largely by word of mouth, the calls and campaigns for this landmark album to be released on vinyl have finally been heeded.

Even after over a decade and a half The Medicine Is All Gone still sounds remarkable. The album is an intoxicating ride through the heaviest of psychedelic trips, its avalanche of layered guitars cascading into fathomless waters of calm respite before the white knuckle ride rises again and again. Its vocals and lyrics sound as though they are the last gasp scream uttered by a man who stands at the precipice of his own mortality. And indeed he might have been.

Caustic Resin vocalist/guitarist Brett Netson is also a longtime member of indie rock heroes Built To Spill and currently plays in drone legends Earth as well as fronting his own Brett Netson and Snakes.

Sex Pistols - Live '79
0602547946829
Universal UK
4x12inch19.08.201619.AUG.16

PopRock

On 19th August UMC will release 4CD and 4LP sets of Sex
Pistols - Live '76. The collection comprises four revolutionary
live recordings - all officially sanctioned by the Sex Pistols and
professionally mastered at Abbey Rd Studios and released in
full for the first time.
Disc one features the truly legendary Lesser Free Trade Hall,
Manchester concert, which took place on 4th June, 1976,
arguably one of the most important music concerts ever. Set up
by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto (who were inspired to form
Buzzcocks after travelling to Welwyn Garden City to watch the
Pistols), the show was witnessed by people including future Joy
Division/New Order members, Morrissey, Mark E. Smith (The
Fall) and Tony Wilson, the concert changed the course of music
history, with the Pistols inspiring a generation of musical
mavericks.
Closer to the band's London roots, the second disc comprises
the 'Midnight Special' concert, which was recorded on 29th
August, 1976 at Screen on the Green, Islington - More widely
known for its cult cinema screenings. This famous gig saw the
Pistols supported by The Clash and Buzzcocks. Legend has it
that journalists and record company staff attempting to gain
entry were reported to have been barred entry.
Disc three is the live show that took place at Chelmsford
Maximum Security Prison on 17th September 1976. Of the four
recordings that make up this collection, this was the only one
'officially' recorded on 4 track ¼ inch tape, by the band's live
soundman Dave Goodman. Reportedly the idea of the band's
manager Malcolm McLaren, who claimed it was part of his
strategy to have the band play more interesting, unusual non
rock 'n' roll places, no doubt in an attempt to create controversy.
John 'Rotten' Lydon rose to the occasion by being his
provocative best, as can be heard on the between songs
banter.
The collection is completed with a concert that originally made
its way around as a fans bootleg, recorded on 25th September
- 1976: 76 Club, Burton on Trent. Officially released in full for
the first time.
Sex Pistols - Live '76 is the first time all four of these concerts
have been collected together in sequence. It will be available on
4CD and 4LP sets (as well as digital download). It features
related photographs and an original facsimile Sex Pistols
Glitterbest press kit from the era.

The Snake is the first solo album by Shane MacGowan with backing band The Popes. Originally released in 1994, the album is a bracing set of songs that draw heavily on traditional Irish folk music while pinning your ears back with a raucous, full-frontal rock sound. Guests on the album include Johnny Depp, members of The Dubliners, Thin Lizzy, and The Pogues.

Like a number of songs recorded by MacGowan's previous band, The Pogues, traditional tunes are sometimes used as a base for a new song. For example, the melody for 'The Song With No Name' is based on 'The Homes of Donegal'.

PopRock

Limited edition of 300 copies on purple vinyl

Swordfish proudly presents a collection of the rarest recordings of the legendary Sky Saxon/Arelich Sunlight Aquarian.

"In Praise Of Our Father" (aka "Yod Ship #3) is a free-form psychedelic jam featuring Sky fronting the Spirit of 76 band. Originally pressed as a one-sided LP, it is scarce beyond belief as only 3 copies are known to exist in the entire world.

"Lovers Cosmic Voyage" is one of several one-off projects Sky had going in the mid @70's, it leans towards the more cosmic/Ya Ho Wha side of his output. Originally released in minute quantities around 1976, it is most likely to have been recorded circa 1973 and around the same time as "In Praise Of Our Father"

As an added bonus 2 previously unreleased tracks, "Hope" and "Wolves and Dogs" have been included. It contains an insert with comments from Djin Aquarian.

What do you get when you put five rednecks in the same barn A full set of teeth, of course! Unless the clodhoppers happen to be Finns, in which case they're going to start a band and will take over the world.

Steve 'N' Seagulls are, basically, a YouTube lark gone horribly, horribly wrong. Back in the summer of 2014 a bunch of Finnish musicians played a hillbillified (yes, it's a word) version of AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' on their barnyard wearing the goofiest apparel possible and shot the darn thing on video. Eventually nobody got more punked than the band themselves, having to witness the video ramp up millions of views in just couple of weeks and landing the fledgling band on the websites and magazine pages of elite metal media, Guitar World, Revolver, Loudwire, Blabbermouth and Metal Sucks leading the way.

Following a strange logic, something like Steve 'n' Seagulls probably couldn't even have been born anywhere else than Finnish countryside, Finland being the most effervescent metal band hotbed on the globe (53 heavy metal bands per 100,000 people) that even President Obama has acknowledged. However Finnish their origins, the Gulls' chawbacon representations of legendary rock tunes sound astonishingly American and hit the spot like Georgia Apple Pie Moonshine: this stuff is sweet, fun and 140% proof - equally capable to get you hammered and to set you on fire!
Since they dropped in the middle of the scene like a home-made fertilizer bomb reaching millions of viewers with their YouTube hits, Finland's finest farmers Steve 'N' Seagulls have played 175 shows, toured in 20 countries and a dozen US states, graced the stages of the awesomest metal festivals on the globe like Wacken Open Air, Sweden Rock, Summer Breeze, Rencontres Trans Musicales, Qstock, Nummirock etc., rattlin' regiments of riotous rockers with rabble-rousing renditions of sempiternal rock and metal standards. The Gulls' chock-full gig calendar says it like it is: Line dance head-banging is now officially a global craze and it keeps on spreading like wildfire!
Mere 16 months removed from their shake-rattle 'n' rollin' debut 'Farm Machine', the country cousins now shake the foundations again with 14 new bumpkin tracks, breathing some fresh countryside air to another batch of immortal rock classics. This time it's the tunes of Guns 'N' Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and the Gulls' countrymen Nightwish among others who get pummeled with the hick stick - and their 1st original song to boot!

Limited edition of 500 copies on psychedelic vinyl

Swordfish is very proud to announce the start of its vinyl reissue of classic vintage recordings by the self-styled God of Hellfire-Arthur Brown.

Opening the series is the legendary second album from the Crazy World of Arthur Brown "Strangelands" Recorded in 1969 but unreleased at the time, it was just too "out there" for Track Records. Now it reverberates with the spirit of the age as well as encompassing an almost contemporary feel.

It is presented as a limited edition of 500 copies on psychedelic vinyl, fully remastered audio with all-new cover artwork conjuring up the look of what it should have had if it had been issued in 1969 as originally scheduled. It is the missing link between the original Crazy World and Kingdom Come.

Whiskey Myers, the soulful Southern rockers, will release their latest / fourth studio album, 'Mud', on September 9th via Spinefarm Records; helmed by Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Rival Sons, etc.), this record sees the East Texan outfit taking their easy style and sound to fresh levels, straddling a number of different genres - soul, country, classic rock, blues, etc. - in the process.

The follow-up to 'Early Morning Shakes' (2014), 'Mud' features 10 new tracks packed with narrative vocals, emotive hooks and twin guitar strength, including 'Frogman' (a co-write with Rich Robinson previewed live at the Download Festival) and 'Deep Down In The South', a classic slice of Southern Rock celebrating a culture rich with tradition and solid values.
Through the quality of their song-writing, ability to straddle different genres, plus their undeniable power in concert and on record, the band has attracted a devoted army of home-grown fans who pack out venues, sing their praises online, and continue to make Whiskey Myers a word-of-mouth sensation... and that fervour is now spreading quickly overseas.

On the live front, Whiskey Myers (Cody Cannon - Lead Vocals, Guitar | Cody Tate - Guitar, Vocals | John Jeffers - Guitar, Vocals | Gary Brown - Bass | Jeff Hogg - Drums) will return to the UK on July 23rd to perform at the Ramblin' Man Fair, followed by a debut headline UK tour in December; due to strong demand, the venues in Birmingham & Glasgow have already been upgraded.

Whiskey Myers were recently here for Download (June 12th), and prior to that they made their first visit to these shores Special Guesting with kindred spirits, The Cadillac Three (January / February 2016).

'Dynamic.'—The Wild Honey Pie

'Latigo', is the second EP from emerging LA-based band Wilderado, formerly known as Bird Dog, and will be released on the 12th August via National Anthem. The EP's lead single 'Wheat' was premiered by Radio 1's Huw Stephens
The new music follows the band's debut EP Misty Shrub which received widespread praise for its equal parts intimacy to a brooding euphoria. Peppered by four-part harmonies and devilish way with a hook and melody, Wilderado have quickly become well versed in the power of restraint, but the importance of playing every note like they mean it.
Vocalist Maxim Helmerich explains, 'A lot has happened since we wrote and recorded these songs in Latigo. Still, the songs carry the sound of that canyon, the memories from that house and the people we will always love. This EP is an ode to all of that.'
Like Misty Shrub, Latigo was produced by James McAlister (known for his work with Sufjan Stevens), mixed by The Shins' Yuuki Matthews and recorded in the band's own studio, set up in a dilapidated house in Latigo Canyon in Malibu, CA.
Wilderado is Maxim Helmerich (vocals, guitar), Tyler Wimpee (guitar, vocals), Colton Dearing (percussion, keys, vocals) and Justin Kila (drums). Two band members hail from Tulsa, OK while two grew up in Dallas, TX. They all came to L.A. around the same time and reconnected serendipitously.

Wilco - Schmilco

PopRock

Zum zehnten Album darf man sich jede Freiheit gönnen. Also nennen Wilco ihr neustes Werk erstmal

Newcastle Trio continue on their voyage through deep fuckin' space. Powerdrive psychedelic rock. Two huge tracks of blistering leads, mind melting brain changes and max fuzz. Influenced heavily tonally al la Peace On The Mississippi/Crash Landing 3rd generation cassette culture, tight Grand Funk oblivion rhythm mind chemistry. Play High and Loud.

Recommended for fans of Psychedelic rock, spaced out jams, Acid Mothers Temple, Bong, The Cosmic Dead, Les Rallizes Denudes, Earthless etc

Features members of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Khünnt, Bong, HaiKai No Ku

The album comprises of just the 2 tracks, 'New Cruiser' and 'Phase II', both of which exceed the quarter of an hour mark. 'New Cruiser' dives straight in with some deep, rolling bass, crashing drums and the trademark guitar from Vest. The track rolls and pitches along its way, based, as ever, on repetition (the bass of Hedley becomes positively hypnotic) while the guitar weaves heavy, reverb-drenched patterns in the sky. Blown Out have become masters of this - music that is heavy enough to affect the gravitational pull of nearby planets whilst still having the ability to mesmerise....the music that has you nodding whilst staring into the distance. This is what 'psychedelic' music is all about....not flowers and sugar cubes and paeans to long lost pastoral idylls, but music that can transport you. In Blown Out's case, that means a one way ticket to the far reaches of known space...with a huge shit-eating grin on yer face.

If 'Phase II' may sound a tad familiar to some, that's because it is a reworked, longer version of the same on  'Celestial Sphere' (on a purely personal note, I'm glad that some of that album will make it on to vinyl). It continues pretty much where 'New Cruiser' left off...blistering, fuzzy wah-wah,

Eros And The Eschaton - Weight Of Matter
BRN243LP
Bar None
12inch23.09.201623.SEP.16

PopRockAlternative

Weight of Matter, the band's second full-length, is a Neil-Young & Crazy Horse guitar-inspired album, dialing in tones akin to Mercury Rev and The Walkmen while maintaining the airy psychedelia of early Flaming Lips.

Whereas lead songwriters Kate Perdoni and Adam Hawkins took turns to provide drums, keys, guitars and other instrumentation on the band's first record, they were joined in their home studio by new members Alex Koshak (drums), Mitch Macura (keys) and Ryan Spradlin (bass) on new full length 'Weight of Matter', continuing an exploration of sonic landscapes while creating space for each individual member's contribution to shine through.

First single, Rxx," calls to mind dozens of missed moments in rock and roll history set against a backdrop of pop hooks and mayhem, while Bop Shoo Bop" pays homage to legendary Tropicalia ensemble Os Mutantes. Repose and the cosmos dance on point throughout the track list, providing a contemplative backdrop of harmony and keen melodies to a sometimes brusque outlook. The group borrows popular country standard Cry," adding a Casio backbeat and shoe gaze twist, then treads the waters of thematic love and loss on the heartbreakingly emotive title track.

Operating in the realm of the heart, Perdoni and Hawkins' lyrics and subsequent delivery manifest the sight of creative intuition, bringing awareness of unexplored possibilities to light and letting the listener know that the journey is possible.

Eros and the Eschaton began as the experimental two-piece recording project of Kate Perdoni and Adam Hawkins in 2012, weaving magic into shoegaze pop" (SPIN). Perdoni and Hawkins spent that year exploring the sound frontiers in the master-bedroom-turned-studio of a swampy North Carolina rental, set against an outlaw country scape of kudzu, atrocious spiders, wild mammals, and copperhead snakes, writing and recording, self-releasing two singles and touring whenever possible before catching the ears of Bar/None through a video session with Love Drunk.

Franco Chiari, born in 1927 in Naples, was an eclectic artist who is considered a bit of a wildcard of keyboard instruments: he played the piano, accordion, synthesizer, vibraphone and marimba in both jazz and symphony. For three consecutive years (1957/58/59) he won the National Jazz referendum, was vibraphonist in the national TV Orchestra and participated in numerous important broadcasts. He received many awards in his career, and numerous are the artists who have wanted to play live alongside him, including Lionel Hampton, Stéphane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Piero Piccioni, Armando Trovajoli, Lelio Luttazzi, and more.

In this album released in 1973, the most groovy in his career, and now the most wanted from collectors, he rearranges the compositions of Mario Bertolazzi electronically with the use of synthesizer on rhythms ranging from latin beats to funk.

Numbered limited edition with digital downloads included and an amazing cover with splashes of paint, making each copy unique and unrepeatable.

This 1975 album is a studio session organized by Maestro Giacomo Dell'Orso (the husband of Edda) here released under his given name and not the Oscar Lindok pseudonym under which he made a number of recordings including The Fine Machine. This album had the simple purpose of a fun and playful session without preconceived models.

The result is a carefree album, from the friendly cover (Orso means Bear) to the music that is interwoven with bossa nova, samba, jazz and funk in a style that recalls in many ways the work of Maestro Piero Piccioni.

Dell'Orso plays organ, electric piano and Bulisacchio (a synth with metal slats that simulate bass), Nino Rapicavoli on flute and sax, Jimmy Tamborelli on guitars and Ciro Cocozza on percussion.

Hydrogen Sea - In Dreams

UNDAY RECORDS

PopRock

Hydrogen Sea's debut album 'In Dreams' is the next chapter in this young band's intriguing story. On their first full length, they reconcile the electronic with the acoustic in eleven stunning pop songs.

Hydrogen Sea is Birsen Uçar and Pieterjan Seaux' musical lovechild. The band formed in 2011, four years after these night owls united. When night falls and the city settles down, they start composing. Multi-instrumentalist Seaux is the creator of Hydrogen Sea's 'slow motion techno' and its intoxicating melodies. He particularly has a knack for blending layered electronic elements with acoustic instruments. Uçar is the vocalist and writes the lyrics. She longs to translate stories into music while creating a cinematic atmosphere. Birsen aims to captivate her beholders and to absorb them completely.

The band's debut EP 'Court the Dark' came out on Unday Records in 2014. The vinyl release sold out in no time and its tracks were instantly featured on several impactful Spotify playlists. The two of them also joined Selah Sue, Gabriel Rios, Oscar and the Wolf en Joan as a Policewoman on tour. They played over 100 shows in New York, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands. Hydrogen Sea worked hard, hired a drummer and grew into an impressive three piece live band. They wrote, explored, and developed their distinctive sound. In the shadow of their work for Hydrogen Sea, the band members collaborate with other artists, such as Selah Sue. Birsen even co-wrote the Belgian Eurovision entry.

In 2016, it's time for the next chapter. 'In Dreams' is Hydrogen Sea's first full length album. They recorded it at Joris Caluwaerts' (STUFF.) studios in Antwerp and finished it in Glasgow with Tony Doogan as additional producer and mixer. The Scottish maestro is best known for his work for the likes of Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, David Byrne and, recently, Minor Victories.
Birsen's vocals evoke Little Dragon, Azure Ray or L'altra. The compositions are entrancing and gloomy, the bass lines are reminiscent of Massive Attack and Portishead.
If 'In Dreams' were a photo, it would be taken at slow shutter speed. Hydrogen Sea's debut is a glimpse into their nocturnal dream world, mysterious and lushly arranged. Welcome into their universe.

The Millennium Bell is the 20th record album by Mike Oldfield, originally released in 1999. The theme of the album is a reflection of different periods of human history. The album borrows its name from the dawning of the 3rd millennium and Oldfield's Tubular Bells series of albums. The Millennium performance of the latter half of the album plus some older tracks was given in Berlin, Germany on New Year's Eve
1999, with an estimated audience of 500,000 people.

Oldfield recorded the majority of the album at his home studio, Roughwood Studios, Berkshire, and then recorded the orchestrations in just one day at Abbey Road Studios, London with the London Session Orchestra.

It was Oldfield's third album within one year, after Tubular
Bells III in late 1998 and Guitars (MOVLP1694) earlier in
1999. The album is eclectic in style, ranging from majestic choruses and soundtrack-esque orchestral passages through New Age sonic textures and ethnic sounds to strong pulse of electronic percussion.

Has there ever been a band as aptly named as The Funkees Formed after the Biafran War to raise spirits in the east, they quickly conquered the dance floors of Lagos and in 1973 headed to London, playing at Ronnie Scott's and tearing up the local scene. Now I'm A Man captures the band at the height of their London-era pomp. Africans were making soca, West Indians were playing afro-funk and discolypso blasted from boom boxes across West London. The Funkees soaked it all up and delivered back, funkier, tighter and louder. Bookended by two Santana-esque jams, 'I'm A Man' and '303', The Funkees second album delivers slow burning Afrobeat ('Mimbo'), urgent jungle bongo chants ('Salam') and straight-ahead floor-fillers (Dance With Me.) Little wonder that legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ, John Peel, recorded not one, but two sessions with them. A year later, The Funkees were no more. Jake Sollo joined Osibisa. Sonny Akpabio and Harry Mosco pursued successful solo careers. (A PMG reissue of Country Boy is coming soon.) But on Now I'm A Man they burned brightly as Nigeria's most talented, inventive and funky band.

Compulsion Songs is the 3rd album from Carlisle's The Lucid Dream. Rather than bathe in the critical acclaim of their recent 2nd album, The Lucid Dream are quick out the blocks, venturing into pastures new again, making no secret of their aim to separate themselves from their peers as much as possible. On Compulsion Songs, pulling away from the pack is the order of the day, and the ideas on show here reaffirm the many claims that The Lucid Dream are one of the most important, diverse and exciting bands in the UK at present. Compulsion Songs is a demonstration of the band's skill in binding the sounds of their broadening musical palette through their unifying songcraft.

Recorded at Whitewood Studios, Liverpool, with Rob Whiteley, the album is produced alongside long-time collaborator Ross Halden (Ghost Town Studios, Leeds). Recent single Bad Texan (the first work from the album unveiled via 12' vinyl in March this year) sees the band move into dancefloor meets Krautrock. The Krautrock/kosmiche groove is also present alongside new-wave in the 2-part opus Nadir/Epitaph. 21st Century is quite appropriately the nearest the band get to a protest song, a 2-minute white noise/garage/rockabilly blast, inspired by a heavy dose of Beastie Boys listening. Elsewhere, the bustling of The Emptiest Place is Morricone meets 60s L.A, Stormy Waters bows to the melodies of The Stone Roses/The Byrds, warping them with a sinister twist in the vein of Spiritualized. The album's showpiece however comes via the 8-minute space-dub of I'm A Star In My Own Right, as the band hit a full on Kingston, Jamaica dub/groove, set as it is to contorting, reverb-fueled passages.

Compulsion Songs follows 2015's critically acclaimed 2nd album, which gained plaudits from Drowned In Sound (who named the album #7 UK album of the year/#18 world album, and overall highest placed 'psych' album), Uncut, Q, Clash, Louder Than War, The Skinny, and major radio support from BBC Radio 1 (Huw Stephens), BBC Radio 2 (Huey Morgan), and BBC 6 Music (Lauren Laverne, Marc Riley (inc. 2 sessions), Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Stuart Maconie, Tom Robinson). 'Mona Lisa', the opening track from the album, was also included in The Observer's 'Critics Favourite Tracks Of 2015' playlist. The vinyl pressing of the album (750 copies) sold out on the day of release, and was backed by a European tour across 11 countries, slots at Indouro Fest (Portugal), Eindhoven Psych Lab (Holland), and supports to Clinic and A Place To Bury Strangers.

Behind this incredibly rare 1973 album lurks CAMPO DI MARTE (the highly regarded Italian progressive rock band) in their second incarnation. After the release of their debut album the group performed at numerous concerts but only released this one album under the pseudonym of THE PHYSICIANS. They were called by the producer Giuseppe Cassia in Rome to record this album, which was produced in a day, and it's amazing to feel the harmony between the band members, all from Livorno and led by the excellent guitarist Enrico Rosa who the following year would be transferred abroad in Denmark in order to better express his art.

There are many memorable jazz-rock tracks on the album that recall the British band Nucleus, such as "Jazz in the Cellar", "My girl from Harlem" and "East Side Rhythm" but with a unique and personal style.

The band, besides the aforementioned Enrico Rosa, included Loriano Berti, nicknamed whistle, coming from Capitolo 6 on sax and flute, Andrea Colli on drums (who in the future would also collaborate with Demetrio Stratos) and Sergio Ducilli on electric bass.

As the grandson of the late trumpeter Doc Cheatham, and former student of legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, trumpeter Theo Croker is an artist steeped in jazz tradition and he is rapidly becoming one of the hottest jazz artists of this era.

Croker's own music reveals a love of organic funk, soul, and groove-oriented hip-hop. Helping to raise Croker's musical vibrations is his ensemble, featuring saxophonist Anthony Ware, keyboardist Michael King, guitarist Ben Eunson, bassist Eric Wheeler, and drummer Kassa Overall. Also adding color to the proceedings are guitarist Femi Temowo and saxophonist Irwin Hall. Dee Dee Bridgewater appears on the classic tune 'Love From The Sun'. Croker proves he's got deep ideas about life, spirituality, and how music connects us all. It's an ebullient, groove-conscious message perhaps best expressed on the bass-heavy 'It's Gonna Be Alright.' Trading the song's title phrase back and forth like old friends high-fiving on the street, you can hear Croker and his band smiling.

Guitarist John Petrucci is ripping it up with groovy riffs and mesmerizing solos while singer James LaBrie shows a vocal range that is second to none. The album includes the singles "Hollow Years","You Not Me" and "Burning My Soul". The latter hit the 33rd mark on the US Mainstream Rock charts. To complete the epic package, the sleeve art bears a mysterious, instantly recognizable Storm Thorgersson design.

Bad Sports return with a jaw-dropping new 12-inch! While
the band hasn't released anything in a couple of years, the
individual members have been anything but idle during
that time. Orville Neely continues his slow takeover of the
world with rock juggernauts OBN IIIs (who have released
two albums in the past two years), while Daniel Fried and
Gregory Rutherford's band Video got signed to Jack
White's label Third Man Records, and has been touring
ever since. The pair have also been touring a ton as one half
of Radioactivity, who released the stunning Silent Kill on
Dirtnap last year.
Originally conceived as a series of three singles, the band
and label realized that the individual seven songs worked
as one piece. Living With Secrets is another step forward
for Bad Sports—moving away from both the ebullient
punk/power pop of 2011's Kings Of The Weekend and the
anything-goes grimy punk of 2014's Bras, this EP is their
darkest, most powerful, and weirdest. The lyrics are bleak
and desperate, but the music is more dangerously catchy
than ever.

Charlie 'ungry - Who Is My Killer
HZR-183
Into The Deep
7"-Vinyl19.08.201619.AUG.16

PopRockIndie

UK punk in the late 1970s was a vast and impossibly diverse sea of groper, mopers and dopers, all desperate to clamp down on the raw nerves of a new generation full of anger and distrust, and when you look deep into the well, there's so many incredible overlooked gems, most of which don't quite fit the mold of what was to be soon homogenized for the public. Apart from the higher end of the UK punk food chain, there were countless imitators instantly, all unanimously clamouring for the attention of the new wave, and one little self-released 7' EP from a group hell-bent on shaking up the emerging genre confines known as Charlie 'Ungry, was among that vast output. Band founders Jeff Gibbs and Tony Sando had done time previously in Yellow Bird, a glam rock band that released one sole single in 1974 and then fragmented upon it's immediate dismissal by the rock press, but they had more ideas to flesh out and by the time 1976 rolled around they had assembled the new group with Andy Demetriou and Steve Protheroe, named after a fictitious scapegoat Jeff's father always blamed any misdoings on, and this Charlie 'Ungry was born.

Leveling off their enthusiasm for a wider variety of sounds than most of their contemporaries, the band grasped a serious metallic sound right out of the gate, as their signature song 'Who Is My Killer' rips through the speakers in a NWOBHM style that's undeniable. However, their glammy Slade-like rhythms and break-neck speed signaled a very punkish angle, reflecting the energy and nihilism of the exploding punk phenomenon, and their unique interplay between song styles, even mid-song as in 'Who Is My Killer' had an incredible effect, yet it was sadly underexposed. In retrospect, most truly innovative bands trying something new have had a cold response in general, par for the course in the case of Charlie 'Ungry as well, with their incredible fusion of British metal guitar, pulse-pounding glam vocals, and white-knuckle punk rock delivery. Most simpletons just couldn't get their heads wrapped around it.

The band got a chance to go into a professional studio in 1977 and lay down a session of tracks at Argonaut Studios with Tom Newman (produced of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells LP), a singular session that yielded a full LP worth of material, all knocked out live in the studio with minimal overdubs and with their pure intensity firmly in place. The three tracks they pulled from this professional studio session were used on their self-released debut EP, but with the intricacies sewn into the would-be, albeit lengthy hit song 'Who Is My Killer,' the EP was delegated to the dreaded 33rpm 7' format. This small detail was enough to be elbowed out of rotation for many DJs of the era, assuring this little explosive gem would slip through the cracks despite it's actual top 20 UK chart action. Now we present to you, a slightly altered version of the 'House on Chester Road' EP with one song interchanged with an incredible, first-time-on-vinyl track just because you really deserve nothing but the best, so crank this up until your head starts throbbing, your 'Unger for Charlie 'Ungry will not be underestimated. - VictimofTime

Back in January 2015, we had the pleasure of hosting Coupler in our Blue Room. The event came to life when these local acousticians and purveyors of deliberate ambience took the stage. It was twenty minutes of captivating and unhurried techno that sounded bucolic at first, then violent, then crumbling, but always with a deft momentum. You could feel it in your gut and in your skull. Coupler's set was a twenty-minutes mega-moment of song, and we decided the live album needed an accompanying piece. We invited them back to record Side B in October with a full orchestra of nine friends and musicians, and it turned out to be a very special piece exploring the nether-regions where the organic collides with the electronic. However, this wasn't our typical TMR show. We kept it a relatively intimate affair and only sold a handful of tickets to those interested in seeing a recording process become a performance making this our first installment in The Blue Room Sessions series.

Essential Tremors is something of an anomaly in a city steeped in twang, bathed in sunshine and besieged with hootenannies. Code Knr, Miller, Read Only Memory, Tan, and Eerie Neighbor make up the group voted most likely to trigger a cold sweat, and we love them for it. In the past year, the band has made the charge away from guitar music with a quiet strategy of sporadic shows of crawly, four-track downer violence. During this metamorphosis, the band cut tracks with former Terrible Two and current Serration Pulse synth-lord and tone-boss Daniel Tomczak, crafting a crisp record that is globally exasperated and groovy against all odds: a nosedive into a cesspool of circuit-bent pollution with all the precision intact, notoriously tense, rife with white-knuckle paranoia and fog. Throw in well-placed pangs of electroclash, swirling synth, waterlogged bass lines, and dark-sided shit, and you have an important reminder that good times are not forever, which we are honored to bring to your turntable. Empty Cellar is proud to release the newest album by Magic Trick,
Other Man's Blues—written and recorded while songwriter Tim Cohen
split his time between two lives and two worlds, a horse ranch
with his newborn daughter, and on tour or at Phil Manley's Lucky Cat
Studios in San Francisco.
A book of songs Cohen had written while bouncing to and fro
sufficed in lieu of rehearsal time with the thirteen other musicians who
appear on the tracks: James Kim and James Barone (Beach House)
on drums; Alicia Van Heuvel (Aislers Set) and Paul Garcia on bass;
Joel Robinow (Once and Future Band / Danny James) on keys;
Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang / The Muggers) on guitar; and
omnipresent vocal harmonies from Alicia, Noelle Cahill and Anna
Hillburg. The album is a loose, largely improvised affair, with many
guest appearances and stop-ins. Allegedly tequila was centrally
involved. It's the principle that gave this project a name five years
ago. Especially in this case, the players on the album define what
shapes these songs take.
A ghostly choir of female voices opens the album like a séance,
with the spirit they conjure flitting about the ensuing ten tracks, from
the baroque pop of 'Forest of Kates' to the icy post-punk of 'I Held
the Ring.' There's the air-tight R&B groove of 'Startling Chimes,'
the krauty 'Purest Thing,' a jammy side-to-side trot that moves 'First
Thought' along, taking a detour into country before culminating in a
glorious Grateful Dead-indebted coda. Throughout, it's Cohen's lyrics
that are pushed to the front of the mix—collectively fleshed out, from
his composition book.

It's an album that haunts us to bliss. Synthy, electronic strings, choir ghost vocals, and the pulse of the wind sort of explain what this sounds like.

Mike Rep & The Quotas - Hellbender
HZR-182
Into The Deep

PopRockIndie

Central Ohio is far more of a schitzophrenic hotbed of rock than the Library of Alexandria would lead you to believe. If you squint your eyes past the big city lights & skyscrapers (Rep likes to call them "DIEscrapers") , you can see the outlines of the fertile Ohio Vallley Crescent from which much Midwest D.I.Y. Punk emerged in the aftermath of a late-60's/early-70's gestation period. When digging into the Columbus strata of petrified 70's fossil-rock pure Columbus area underground entities bubble up from the deep: Jim Shepard, Ron House, Tommy Jay, Nudge Squidfish, The Quotas, Screaming Urge... many more. It seems that in some way or another Mike Rep has been intertwined with, 'Lovingly Fucking With', melding with, accompanying and/or leading the charge with many comerades in arms into the hipster Ohio Hell unknown for 40+ freaking years.
Describing the allure of the mid-70s Ohio sound to the uninitiated isn't too difficult. Take the freaked-out post-13th Floor Elevators to Velvet Underground to Stooges to RFTT/Pere Ubu barbed wire bop and compound those influences with the dawn of home recording equipment access, a D.I.Y scene began to evolve . Just the right mixture of humidity, THC & malt liqour-fueled a primal pool ripe for spontaneous generation producing much fruit from apparant sterile soil as viewed from the overlook of big city coastal-dominated Hipsterism. Rep's homemade debut single "Rocket To nowhere" was recorded in 1975/ "released" in 1978 and nobody noticed for the next ten years. Add to that the incredible 'Grim-O-Comix Sequence' LP packed with angst ridden 1974 basement recordings (you need to drop everything and track it down if u haven't heard this unblinkingly look into the maw of the 70's loser teen maelstrom).
HERE & NOW, on Hellbender you get a full primal serving of mostly previously unheard chaos, recorded between '75 and '78, that will no doubt cause future generations to marvel at just how one could be so brutally honest, raw, and wasted yet, live to chronicle it all. HOZAC ARCHIVAL is bringing these sounds to you now. Why Because it IS the kind of mind-numbing, eyeball-popping guttural PURE DIY ROCK & ROLL that saved so many miserable souls from succombing to the "American Dream" sham, and continue to inspire the DIY spirit in all who care to dare. MIKE REP & THE QUOTAS' / HELLBENDER- Very rare, mostly previously unheard recordings from 1975-78 , very recently gleaned straight from the long thought lost original reel-to-reel master tapes.
Rep never expected anyone to give a Rat's Ass about this stuff, but many do. So CRANK IT as loud as you can - this "Crazy Audio Damage" (as one rejected prospective lathe cutter described it before being shown the door) IS NOT for the timid or feint of heart. Hey, It's Rep's Movie maaaan - is it yours too REP sez, "live the dream 'til u drop". - This is as good a place to start or continue as any. "NO SURVIVORS! ROCKET MUSIC ON! DESTINATION UNKNOWN". Just as it should be. Hell YEAH! - Buck Cancer / VictimofTime

Peter Broderick - Partners

Erased Tapes

PopRockIndie

Veteran Erased Tapes recording artist Peter Broderick set to release
new studio album Partners on 19th August 2016. For close to a decade, Portland's Peter Broderick has cut his own unpredictable
path through the world of contemporary music. So far, his wanderings have led him from solo works into the realms of film, dance and documentary scores, as well as art installations.

Now Peter takes that unpredictability one step further. For his latest album, a series of voice and piano recordings, he experiments with chance, surrendering an entire song's composition to the roll of dice.
As he explains below in an email to Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths, it was John Cage's tendency to remove himself from his music, to somehow automate his own process, which inspired the strange mechanics with which this record was created. In the words of Cage himself, 'the world is teeming; anything can happen.'
