Turkey's recent musical history is littered with bottled blondes who put on a lot of eyeliner, made a few singles & then disappeared. And since the mid-1970s, those twin queens Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu have maintained a semi-rivalry while bulldozing their way over pop charts & sales counters. Piles of Turkish psych & folk reissues have hit the west over the past few years, and yet how many have given the luscious ladies of Anatolia their due So go beyond Selda, and get your gal power on. It's time to steam up your windows with this foxy arabesque singer who's a real-life Stevie Nicks next-door.
Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here on Istanbul Plak singles released from 1971-75.
Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high-profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül, maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm
You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like "Turkish Freakout Vol. 2" or "Istanbul 70", but there's way more to discover, and now you can.

Psychedelic hard-rock featuring the explosive fuzz-wah guitar of Peter Illingworth (ex-David John & The Mood).
Little Free Rock were an underground British power-trio which evolved from heavy-mod-psych band Purple Haze. In 1969, the band released their only album for the Transatlantic label. A rather disappointing effort for the band and their fans, as the ultra-clean production did not show the real, powerful sound of the power-trio.
Nirvanating Nervesounds' collects previously unreleased sessions for an aborted Little Free Rock second album from 1971, produced by Robert Stigwood, plus tracks from their early incarnation as Purple Haze, taken from an ultra-rare demo acetate from 1969.
The '71 tracks were recorded when the band had just incorporated an African percussionist to their line-up, Lord' Eric Carboo. Also, ex-Killing Floor bass player John Taylor had replaced original member Frank Newbold. This new line-up shines on tracks like the terrific psych-funk sounding Money On Your Mind', full of drum breaks and frenzied wah-wah guitar.
The '69 recordings are taken from the only known copy of a demo acetate recorded in 1969, when the band had just changed their name from Purple Haze to Little Free Rock. Featuring some songs which were later re-recorded and included on the Little Free Rock Transatlantic album but appearing here in a superior, raw-sounding form. This is a killer find for anyone into late 60s British mod-psych. A fuzzed-out power trio which will surprise anyone into obscure psych/freakbeat acts like Adam's Recital, Five Day Rain, The Attack...
For many people, the recordings included here are the best thing Little Free Rock ever did and show how their first album should've really sounded.
Most of these tracks were previously released on CD under the Time is of no consequence' name but they appear here in a newly remastered, superior sounding form, most noticeable on the acetate tracks (no surface noise here this time!).

Can you imagine a Dutch band playing top-notch 60s-70s sounding Brazilian music
Originally released as a private pressing in 1983, Palmeira's only album will please any lover of bossa, jazzy and latin-fusion sounds.
Beautiful femme vocals, superb musicianship featuring the awesome lead electric guitar of Jeanette van der Pligt, self-penned songs and choice covers of Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto and Rita Lee among others.
Palmeira was a Brazilian styled band formed by Angelo Noce Santoro (ex-Cosmic Dealer) along with some Dutch, North American and Brazilian musicians. The group existed from 1979 till 1985, playing lots of gigs at jazz and night clubs in Holland. In 1983 they released their only album in a private edition of 500 copies on Angelo's ANS label. A cult item for fans of Bossa-Jazz, it was first reissued as a limited edition in Japan, now long out of print. Here's a new reissue featuring no less than six bonus tracks on our CD edition. These bonus (one more over the previous Japanese CD release) come from Angelo's tape archive and all of them were recorded the same year as the album, including some great covers of giants like Edu Lobo and Jorge Ben among others.

WEIDORJE, formed in 1977 by two ex-MAGMA members, is one of Zheul's children, probably the most faithful and the closest musically and spiritually to MAGMA. Hypnotical power, incantatory repeats and polyrhythmicity enlight this first and only album released in 1978, which could be considered as a follower to MAGMA's Üdü Wüdü.

audioMER is happy to announce the release of a new LP; Lost City by Aki Onda (US/JP) with music by Loren Connors (US) and Alan Licht (US).
The images were shot in New York between 2001 and 2002. It was during the time when we were still in shock from 9.11. The stars and stripes suddenly became visible everywhere in the city. Soon after, the invasion of Afghanistan started. Everybody was living under an indefinable fear - not knowing what would happen in the future. (Aki Onda).
Lost City project started as a series of photographs shot by visual artist and composer Aki Onda in New York starting right after 9.11 in 2001. A decisively introspective response to the major world event taking place, his pictures were devoid of direct references, but documented his immediate surroundings, focusing on how what happened resonated on a personal micro-level.
Since 2005, Onda has been presenting this series as slide projections, which function as a visual score for improvisation, and performing with NYC avant-garde musicians Loren Connors and Alan Licht. Two improvisations on this LP were recorded at Anthology Film Archives in NYC in 2007.
Lost City contains the vinyl, a folded 20 x 30 inch poster with the complete photograph series and an A4 risoprinted booklet containing the accompanying text written by NYC based curator/writer Niels Van Tomme.
The record's A side is a duo piece between Connors and Licht that consists of wandering, buzzing guitar drones with occasional noisy eruptions. It highlights the almost twin-like connection between the longtime collaborators, with telepathic intersecting guitar lines and a sense of unease seeping through. The B side is Connors solo and is a very lyrical and atmospheric ambient piece that is equally sparse and spacious. The LP is limited to 350 copies and distributed by N.E.W.S.
BIO's
Aki Onda is an electronic musician, composer, and visual artist. He is particularly known for his Cassette Memories project - works compiled from a 'sound diary' of field-recordings collected by Onda over a span of two decades. Onda's musical instrument of choice is the cassette Walkman. Not only does he capture field recordings with the Walkman, he also physically manipulates multiple Walkmans with electronics in his performances. In another of his projects, Cinemage, Onda shows slide projections of still photo images, shot by himself, as a performance or installation. Onda often works in interdisciplinary fields and collaborates with filmmakers and visual artists. His on-going collaborations include 'Nervous Magic Lantern' with Ken Jacobs, improv trio with Michael Snow and Alan Licht, site-specific happening with Akio Suzuki, and audio-visual installation/performance with Raha Raissnia.
Guitarist Loren Connors was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1949. Best known as a composer and improviser, Connors has issued over 50 guitar records on his own imprints (Daggett, St. Joan, Black Label) since the late 1970s and over two dozen on other labels across the globe. He has recorded under the names Guitar Roberts, Loren Mattei, Loren MazzaCane Connors and other variations. Connors' singular adapation of the blues is a distinct personal vision combining the Delta bottleneck sound and the ancestral blues voice (appearing as distortion, baying hounds or multi-tracked guitar), with hauntingly unexpected sounds. Outside of Connors' three decades of solo work, he has collaborated with Suzanne Langille, Jim O'Rourke, Darin Gray, Alan Licht, Christina Carter, Keiji Haino, San Agustin, Jandek and many others, as well as leading the group Haunted House. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
Alan Licht is a guitarist and composer whose work merges minimalism, rock, free jazz, noise and improv. Since 1990, he has recorded and performed with a diverse array of musicians, including Jim O'Rourke, Phill Niblock,, Arthur Lee, and Peter Brotzmann. He's also collaborated with visual artists, such as Gary Panter and Charles Atlas. Licht is currently the lead guitarist of Lee Ranaldo and the Dust and one-third of the 'talk rock' group Title TK. Several solo albums of his extended solo guitar pieces have appeared on labels like Siltbreeze, Family Vineyard, and Editions Mego. A frequent contributor to Artforum and other publications, Licht is also the author of Sound Art: Beyond Music Between Categories (Rizzoli, 2007) and the editor of Will Oldham on Bonnie Prince Billy (Faber & Faber/W.W. Norton, 2012). He has also created many sound installations and curated exhibitions of sound art.

After the release of Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds (FVR098), Favorite Recordings
follows-up, this time focusing on its homeland language.
Helped by a close connoisseur friend, DJ and collector Charles Maurice presents a fine
selection of what he thinks represent best the amazing energy of this specific movement
and period. With 10 rare titles, all produced between 1975 and 1984, he shows a perfect
picture of what you could find in French record stores at that time;
On one hand, tracks by Overdrive, Marché Noir, Didier Makaga or France-Lise, were
produced by underground artists and labels from the French Caribbean and African
community and also filled with the raw spirit of this Tropical stamping. On the other hand,
tracks by Beckie Bell, Kelly, Le Club, or Bernard Guyvan, were released by major labels
such as Trëma, Carrere, Disques Vogue, or Pathé Marconi, thanks to confirmed
independent producers, acting not only in France, but also in Canada and the US.
Today, Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice are very proud to shed some light again
on these gems, and hopefully offer them a new life on your turntable.

We start our second series of Popol Vuh reissues with the fantastic Das Hohelied Salomos, which takes it over from where Einsjäger Und Siebenjäger left it. It features the classic trio of Florian Fricke, Daniel Fichelscher and Djong Yun, plus the help of Amon Düül's Al Gromer. The theme of the album is taken from biblical passages, using verses from King Salomon's tales on The Old Testament. The music is superb, great guitar soloing, amazing percussion work and the mesmerizing voice of Djong Yun on nine songs that echo previous works, mostly Einsjäger..., but also Hosianna Mantra comes to mind here and there. A perfectly balanced record that merges progrock sounds, eastern influences through the use of sitar and tabla and spiritual meditation.

Werner Herzog's 1972 film Aguirre, The Wrath Of God was the first collaboration between the famed director and Popol Vuh. Florian Fricke was approached by old friend Herzog to do the soundtrack for his third movie. Three years later, in 1975, after the international success of Herzog's film, Popol Vuh issued the LP Aguirre. It featured material recorded for the movie plus some other songs. Some of them recorded prior to 1975 - the Aguirre soundtrack ones, of course, plus there is the presence of the big Moog from Popol Vuh's early albums, and also contains Morgengruss II, an update of the Morgengruss song that had prevously appeared on Ensjäger Und Siebenjäger."Popol Vuh's hypnotic music' for Aguirre met with considerable acclaim. Roger Ebert wrote, The music sets the tone. It is haunting, ecclesiastical, human and yet something else... The music is crucial to Aguirre, the Wrath of God..." AllMusic noted, The film's central motif blends pulsing Moog and spectral voices conjured from Florian Fricke's Mellotron-related "choir organ" to achieve something sublime, in the truest sense of the word: it's hard not to find the music's awe-inspiring, overwhelming beauty simultaneously unsettling. The power of the legendary opening sequence of Herzog's film...owes as much to Popol Vuh's music as it does to the director's mise-en-scène.'
Herzog explained how the choir-like sound was created, "We used a strange instrument, which we called a 'choir-organ.' It has inside it three dozen different tapes running parallel to each other in loops. ... All these tapes are running at the same time, and there is a keyboard on which you can play them like an organ so that (it will) sound just like a human choir but yet, at the same time, very artificial and really quite eerie."
In 1975, Popol Vuh released an album entitled Aguirre. Although ostensibly a soundtrack album to Herzog's film, the six-track LP included only two songs ("Aguirre I (L'Acrime Di Rei)" and "Aguirre II") taken from Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The four remaining tracks were derived from various recordings done by the group c. 1972-1974. At the time of Aguirre, the band members were Fricke (piano, Mellotron), Fichelscher (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, drums), Djong Yun (vocals), and Robert Eliscu (oboe, pan pipe)." (Wikipedia)
Werner Herzog: The music in my films is also very much neglected, if I may interrupt you, in Germany as well. Since AGUIRRE, my friend Florian Fricke, has done the music for almost all my films - for STEINER, for LA SOUFRIERE, for STROSZEK, and for HEART OF GLASS - and I've tried to push very hard so that he would be given the National Film Award this year. They've never given it to him, and there has been complete neglect of his work. Not even a single mention! And this year they just by-passed him once again!' (From: Images at the Horizon, 1979)
Popol Vuh has been nominated three times for an Oscar for best original score: 1972 (Aguirre), 1979 (Nosferatu) and 1987 (Cobra Verde).
There have been several different editions of Aguirre and each has varied slightly or quite a lot from the original issue. Several reissues change the last track (the 17 minute long Vergegenwärtigung) to include material from other Popol Vuh albums, even in cases the song is listed on the sleeve the music is from completely different sources. Thanks to the accurate archive work of SPV on offer here is the original version of the album as it was first released in 1975.

Letzte Tage, Letzte Nächte is probably the most "rock" sounding work of Popol Vuh's production. Recorded by the classic trio of Fricke, Fichelscher and Yun, plus Ted de Jong on tamboura and Amon Düül members Al Gromer on sitar and Renate Knaup on additional vocals, its sounds seem to be more based on power than on ambient. Strong guitar passages emphasize this, with Fischelscher's playing being harder than the Conny Veit ethereal parts on earlier records. The title track is also the first time that Popol Vuh record English words on a song.
With his blistering and emotional guitar work Fichelscher made his mark on many of the Popol Vuh albums. An album like 'Letzte Tage, letzte Nachte'(1976 ) would not be possible without him. But also this album would be impossible without multi-tracking, a technique that Popol Vuh was heavily dependent on throughout their existence. This album shows Popol Vuh from its most rocking and dynamic side. But even here it is evident that a remarkable spiritualism defines the music. In a down-to-earth way Fricke wanted his music to be a 'healing force', an 'uplifting experience for the human soul'. This spiritual quality is inherent and constitutive for all the music he made during his career. This proves Fricke was successful in communicating these intentions to the musicians involved." Dolf Mulder

The story of the Nosferatu soundtrack editions through the years appears a little caotic. Several editions, with several sleeves and completely different tracklists have appeared in different countries. What we tried to offer here is the definitive edition of Popol Vuh's works for this fantastic Werner Herzog 1979 tribute to the old Murnau classic. When asked for a new soundtrack for Herzog's project, Florian Fricke and Daniel Fichelscher came out with a magnificent album that once again, as it had happened with Hosianna Mantra, opened new paths to follow. The album, although having been recorded with the movie in mind, was not titled Nosferatu. Instead it was released as Brüder des Schattens - Söhne des Lichts, which can be translated as "Brother Of Darkness - Son Of Light". It first came out in 1978 featuring amazing new age / ambient escapades based on repetitive passages and instrumentation of incredible beauty, recorded with the help of Al Gromer (Amon Düül) on sitar, Bob Eliscu (Between) on oboe, Ted de Jong on tamboura plus a complete church choir ensemble from Munich. Brüder des Schattens..., also issued in other editions as Nosferatu, makes disc one on this gorgeous double LP set.
Disc two of the Wah Wah edition features the LP that was originally released as the Nosferatu Original Sound Track album, also known as On The Way To A Little Way. A 1978 release, although it contained material recorded prior to that date. Right in the middle of the film production, Herzog felt he needed more music and asked Fricke for obscure, scary material. He searched the Popol Vuh archives and compiled the great collection that Nosferatu / On The Way... is. It came out a varied selectionç where older Moog tracks mix with more reflexive material that already gives clues of what's to come in Brüder des Schattens... Nevertheless, despite all the variety -or maybe thanks to it,- Nosferatu / On The Way To... turned out to be a fantastic, classic Popol Vuh album. We have added one bonus track previously unreleased in vinyl format.

Another classic soundtrack produced by Popol Vuh for a Werner Herzog film was Herz Aus Glass. Its music still retains the powerful emphasis given to the previous LP in certain passages, although it goes back to their more reflexive ambiental athmospheres yet presenting that concept one step further into more evolutive structures and even adding some touches of a certain folk music feel. Djong Yun is not present anymore, but Daniel Fichelscher and Florian Fricke can still count on the collaboration of Al Gromer on sitar, plus the addition of Mathias von Tippelskirch on flute.

As Anthony Meynell says on the notes to this album's reissue, "Squire started life as a singles band, and the opportunity of releasing an album did not arise until we had released 4 singles (Get Ready To Go, Walking Do The Kings Road, The Face of Youth Today and My Mind Goes Round In Circles). Such was the backlog of unrecorded songs, there did not seem any point in repeating the singles on the albums, as every separate release was an opportunity to record a new song!", so the band's policy was not to include the same takes used as singles in their albums, and here they are in the way they were meant to be heard when dee-jayed at the club allnighters, just as they appeared on their singles.
"By 1983 and release of the Get Smart album, we had released a further two singles (No Time Tomorrow and Girl On A Train), making six in total, but most had been deleted and were un-available. Even the recent ones had sold out of stock, and re-pressing an old single was viewed as a missed opportunity of releasing a new single! So this was the driving force behind releasing the Singles Album. A compilation of all the Squire singles would make a phenomenal album, and as the 'B' sides were usually as strong as the 'A' sides, there was already enough material for a whole album."- Anthony Meynell

"Gold Records Vol. 4" - Elvis Presley (g, voc); The Jordanaires (voc); and various bands
At first sight, it does not look as though Elvis's 31st album was destined to be a hit. But if you take a look at his artistic biography in the year of its release - 1968 - then you will recognise the clever gimmicks that his wide-awake management employed to captivate rock 'n' roll fans when Elvis was somewhat 'stiff in the hips'. In this fourth Gold Edition, a tried and tested method was used to create a new LP: namely, a compilation of single hits from the years 1961 to 1967. The result was just what fans wanted! Alongside sentimental songs such as "Love Letters", the tearjerker "Lonely Man" and the sobbing, heartstring tugging ballad "It Hurts Me", we find spirited rock 'n' roll ("Witchcraft", "Ain't That Loving You Baby") and honky-tonk blues ("A Mess Of Blues") in a toned-down 12-beat measure. In contrast, "Don't Drag That String Around" is cheerful, light and springy and, - for a change - not a blues number.
Then we have the country song "Devil In Disguise" with its angry lyrics, and the soul title "What'd I Say" by Ray Charles with an electric sound that is lent by the Rhodes piano. All in all, this LP is a great collection from the grand old days of rock 'n' roll.
Recordings: Juyl 1960 - June 1966 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee, RCA Studios and Radio Recorders in Hollywood
Production: Steve Sholes, Chet Atkins, George Stoll, Felton Jarvis, a.o.

DELUXE REISSUE. The Glass Family released their LP 'Electric Band' in 1968, an acid-, folk- and blues-rock album, with distorted guitars, swirling organ and dirty vocals, that since then has never been reissued until now. Along with a nice remastering of the original LP, this double vinyl package also includes a second disc full of never before heard unreleased tracks from their initial 1968 recording sessions. Standout tracks from the second disc that has a far rawer sound are 'Where'd You Get That Smile' and 'Two x Two' and includes an alternate take of 'House Of Glass'. Within the gatefold packaging of this double LP are unique band photos and a biography of the band's experiences in psychedelic 1960s Southern California. The Glass Family where a part of the 1960s cultural revolution playing gigs and hanging out with people who are now legends. A very relevant release for fans of US '60s psychedelia.

BBC Radio London 99.4FM's Robert Elms described the album as 'one of my records of the year (by) one of my bands of the year.' Now, two of the most played songs on radio shows in UK, Germany and France, is available on 45rpm 7'. This 45 was initially released in December 2014, sold out and then repressed for record stores.

The Boutique Label proudly presents Eternal Hotfire, the debut album by cult garage rock band The Primevals, originally released in 1985 and now digitally remastered with 11 bonus tracks.
Formed in Glasgow in 1983 by lead singer and songwriter Michael Rooney, the brooding five-piece combined hi-octane, revved-up garage rock with a dusting of blues, R&B and even jazz influences. Eternal Hotfire was originally issued on highly regarded French imprint New Rose, then home to The Cramps, Tav Falco, Johnny Thunders, The Saints and a host of others. Over the next few years The Primevals cut two more albums for the Paris indie, Sound Hole and Live a Little, both produced by Richard Mazda, best known for his work with Scientists and The Fleshtones.
The Primevals formed to try out something earthy and uncompromising,' explains Rooney. To make some noise, but with good tunes as well. We wanted to combine R&B and garage styles and maybe even get close to that jazz ethic, something like Pharoah Sanders fused with the MC5. With the Clyde as our Delta.'
The Primeval Call has never truly died away, with the group releasing a steady stream of excellent albums including Dig (1990), There Is No Other Life (2007), Disinhibitor (2010), Heavy War (2012) and Tales of Endless Bliss (2014).
Newly remastered in 2015, the CD features 61 minutes of music. Bonus tracks include the non-album singles Living In Hell and Where Are You, rare compilation tracks, and four scorching live tracks taped at the legendary Klub Foot in London in 1985. The deluxe 16 page booklet includes archive band images and liner notes by Rooney.

The Boutique Label presents Sound Hole, the second album by cult garage rock band The Primevals, originally released in 1986. Now remastered with 6 bonus tracks as well as new artwork, the double disc package also includes a bonus live CD recorded live at the Rex Club in Paris in 1988.
Sound Hole was produced by Richard Mazda (Fleshtones, Scientists). Stand out tracks include Spiritual, Lowdown and Prairie Chain. One of our best albums for sure,' says frontman Michael Rooney. The songs were strong and several peaks were hit. There's some kind of chaotic thread which linked the reality of 1980s Glasgow with a mess of far flung ideas and emotions. We definitely punched the anxiety button on Sound Hole.' The Primevals celebrated the release of the album with a six week European tour with The Cramps, along with radio sessions for the likes of John Peel, Janice Long and Andy Kershaw.
Newly remastered in 2015, disc 1 features 67 minutes of music. Bonus tracks include single b-sides and a radio session from late 1985. Disc 2 features a blistering live performance (18 tracks) from the Rex Club in Paris on 13 April 1988, highlights from which were issued as a vinyl-only album Neon Oven. This is the first time the complete show has been made available.

Vince Taylor is the stage name of Brian Maurice Holden, leader of the legendary Playboys. Though a British native, Taylor went to high school in Los Angeles and began his career there managed by Joe Barbera, of the legendary animation studio Hanna-Barbera, who was his brother-in-law. Though he started performing in the USA, it was on a trip back to London that he met the players who would become the Playboys, and it was in France and the rest of the European continent that Taylor found most of his success. Inspired by the likes of Elvis and Gene Vincent, Taylor brought rockabilly to Europe in a major way. This reissue on Rumble features his legendary debut 10" album + an entire side of bonus tracks culled from early singles compiled together on one deluxe LP of classic early rock'n'roll. Dig.

100 copies only
The stars aligned and in October of 2014 Neil Hagerty (Royal Trux, Pussy Galore, The Howling Hex) and James Toth (Wooden Wand) went into a Denver studio with the crack rhythm section of Darin Gray (Tweedy, William Tyler, Wooden Wand) and Eric Van Leuven (The Howling Hex).
The full length Qalgebra was the result of those sessions. Hagerty and Toth share songwriting and vocal duty with the unique voices of both men shining through equally.
Shifted out of time, the Hagerty-Toth Band would have been your own 70s denim jacket patch as this is new age garage to both sooth and expand your soul.

He is not so easy to find. You have to follow the kilometres of pipes down and along a labyrinth of corridors, to enter in the basement den of Romain Turzi. This once cavernous space has been metamorphosised into a recording studio for the purpose of creating and completing the A & B albums trilogy with the latest LP release: C. Closed off from the world, without natural light and water supply, but full of consoles, synthesizers and old guitars, Romain cocooned himself here for several months to perfect his music and sonically construct the soundtrack that is C, with tracks entitled by nine types of birds, to glide you through this treasure hunt through the complexities of his musical mind.
After Turzi's sophomore album: B, recorded under the Corsican sun, the change of conditions is quite radical. Closing off from the world in a place where you can only do one thing, make music, Turzi was able to gain the greatest luxury within this process: time.

Reissue of 1986 Debut full-length album'A Cup Of Tea and A Lye Down'. Re-mastered and packaged featuring liner notes, posters and flyers presented in a gatefold. Flying Nun and Capture Tracks reissue of the Able Tasmans' 1986 debut full-length album 'A Cup Of Tea and A Lye Down' with bonus 12' containing the bands first EP 'The Tired Sun' (1985) and three bonus tracks. Initially, hailing from Whangarei, one of New Zealand's northernmost city, The Able Tasman's where more than 1500km's away from Flying Nun's epicenter Dunedin. However, this never hindered involvement with the label releasing four albums and two EP's filled with their own brand of sweet and crafty guitar pop. Named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (who first discovered New Zealand in the late 1960's) the band themselves were avid explorers limited only by their imagination. Their song writing and arrangement crossed lines between baroque and indie pop integrating field recordings and bringing keyboards to the forefront of their music. They are also the only New Zealand band to tastefully incorporate bagpipes into a song. 'It was Flying Nun who gave us the chance to record. We remain grateful. I personally felt some pride in hailing from Whangarei, not a major center and certainly not southern, yet doing music that Flying Nun and its grand stable of thoroughbreds thought was something akin to good.' founding member Graeme Humphreys explains. Even as a dinky 3-piece with not a guitar in sight we were invited to tour alongside Look Blue Go Purple and The Chills. It was a massive vote of confidence.' Now, after nearly two decades their debut album will be available again, with this new collection dedicated to the late David Beniston, the Able Tasmans' original bassist and founding member.

- B1: The Devil Is People (The Cheech Wizard's Hemiolic Chantey At The Edge Of The Anthropocene Epoch) (6:46)
Features Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Palace) and members of Grails and Tortoise. Released in collaboration with STILLWATER ARTISANAL brewer. RIYL: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Grails, Slint, Tortoise Bonnie Stillwatter is a conceptual collaboration of artistry and friendship between Will Oldham (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), experimental rock group Watter (featuring a member of Grails), and Stillwater Artisanal, a nomadic brewer that mixes equal parts art and alcohol. This collaboration is an inspired one, the roots of which are a mutual respect and love, and the fruits of which are two side-long trips into dark cinematic folk-rock determined to find the light at the end of the tunnel. "The Devil Is People" begins not unlike the east-meets-west melancholy of Watter and Grails. Oldham's penchant for weaving singer with song is particularly resonant here, his firstperson storytelling has an uncanny way of sounding communal - almost hymnal - when wrapped in ever-unfolding layers of warm sound. On the b-side, mercurial multi-instrumentalist/producer Bundy K. Brown (Tortoise, Gastr del Sol) explodes "The Devil Is People", rearranging and reinterpreting its multitude of instruments and voices into something more sinister - less a remix, more like a vital new limb growing from the belly of the beast. 'Independent Worm Saloon' is the major label debut by the Butthole Surfers originally released by Capitol Records in 1993. Riding the wave of the early 90s alternative explosion the band used some of that major label money and hired former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones as producer and the result is a tight in your face album that didn't tone down the band at all. Gibby Haynes is in fine form with his often hilarious and bizarre vocals and lyrics working their way into your brain on all out rockers like 'Who Was In My Room Last Night' and 'Goofy's Concern' and on the more mellow numbers such as 'The Ballad Of Naked Man' and 'You Don't Know Me'. First time ever domestic vinyl release.
