"Strange Friend" ist das dritte Album der sechs Schotten, das nun auf "Checkmate Savage" (2009, Gewinner des ersten radioeins Soundcheck Awards) und "The Wants" (2010) folgt. Bereits diese beiden Alben haben nicht nur die musikalische Wandelfähigkeit der Band deutlich gemacht, sondern zeigen auch ihre ganz eigenen Prinzipien: es wird demokratisch entschieden und gearbeitet. Nicht ohne Grund traten sie jahrelang unter verschiedensten Namen auf, bevor man sich auf The Phantom Band einigte. Musikalisch betrachtet ist "Strange Friend" womöglich das geradlinigste Album, das The Phantom Band bis jetzt geschaffen hat. Allerdings ohne dabei Kompromisse einzugehen: der Einfluss von John Carpenter, Kraftwerk oder auch Neu! ist ebenso weiterhin hörbar, wie Folkelemente und wirsche Orgelklänge. Nur aufgeräumter. Wie auch schon die erste Single "The Wind That Cried The World" vermuten lässt. "Strange Friend" wurde "aus dem Wunsch geboren, wieder zu dem Gefühl zurückzukommen, einfach nur eine Gruppe Freunde zu sein, die in einem Raum zusammen Musik macht", so Sänger Rick Anthony. Dabei verfolgt das Album kein wirkliches Konzept - ebenso wie der Name selbst für die verschiedensten Dinge stehen kann. Für alles, wozu wir Menschen eine Beziehung aufbauen können - auch Musik.

The Royal Family & The Poor is the nomenclature adopted by Mike Keane, who recorded for Factory Records between 1980 and 1986.
"The Project Phase 1 - The Temple of the 13th Tribe", released in 1984 (FACT 95) was produced in Manchester by Joy Divison and New Order bassist Peter Hook. Featuring the violinist John Neesham (of Walking Seeds and Mel-o-Tones) and the keyboard player Lita Hira from labelmates Stockholm Monsters, the album was done only after plenty of ups and downs in Keane's own life as well as numerous personnel shifts and incarnations, but the end results were a sometimes delicate and often enthralling combination.

The combination of TR 808 and other drums, reverbed vocals, and aural mystery is all permeated by Keane's interest in the occult, while Hook's technological know-how adds a sharp rhythmic punch to tracks such as "Dark And Light", "Radio Egypt" and "Discipline". Other tracks include one of Mike Keane's best known songs, the affecting ballad "I Love You (Restrained in a Moment)", and the sinister, vocodered "Motherland".

Perhaps the most misunderstood band to record for Factory Records, The Royal Family and the Poor remain for many an (oc)cult enigma, releasing only four albums in two decades, and rarely performing live after 1984.

A lost classic, highly recommended for fans of Joy Division, New Order, Section 25, Durutti Column, Death In June.

7he Myriads debut on Theomatic with the stellar 'Betelgeuse EP'. It is a bow to the era of all-round enthusiasm for space exploration and travelling to far off galaxies that swept across Russian (then Soviet) youth in the late 70's-early 80's. Highly influenced by the sound of the likes of Didier Marouani's Space and Soviet space-rock legend Zodiac (which sold 20 million copies of their albums in the USSR and lately found way to Environ's 'Unclassics' compilation), all four tracks on the EP are well charged with nostalgic analogue synth lines, powerful guitar riffs and dynamic live drums. If someone told us this was some unreleased stuff produced back in 1980, we would certainly believe...

Ihr Comeback im Jahr 2011 war ein echter Triumphzug. It's been over three years since Oscillate Wisely, the debut album from Mike Adams At His Honest Weight. A lot has happened to all of us since then, but it was a particularly actionpacked time for ol' Mike. His newborn son requiring emergency heart surgeries immediately after birth (doing fine now!), his former rock band of nearly 10 years calling it quits, and plenty of other heavy things have helped shape the follow-up, Best of Boiler Room Classics, into one of the most believably moving albums to come around in a long time. But forget about all that stuff for a minute because we need to talk about how great these SONGS are! And these are real songs, daddy! Verses, choruses, hooks, bridges, you know, well-written timeless songs that at least some of us will be listening to 50 years from now. The same mixing/mastering team of Adam Jessup & Eric Day have returned and have really taken their time to make this album sound like exactly one million bucks. The thoughtful, hard work that went into this record has resulted in something truly special, like a Midwestern Tusk made by fun, lovable people who actually get along really well. Best of Boiler Room Classics has the subtle, earnest warmth of an album like the Clientele's Strange Geometry but with the arena-ready grandeur of ELO's Out Of The Blue. Versions Of A Life is a collection of recorded works by London, UK post-punk band Ski Patrol. Formed in 1979 by singer Ian Lowery and guitarist Nick Clift, the band played moody, epic, angular music. Active until late 1981, Ski Patrol's musical and lyrical output mirrored the dub-reggae influences of their Brixton and Ladbroke Grove home-bases, the civil unrest of post-punk Britain and the freedom to push aside the rock rulebook as had been done by their peers PiL and Gang Of Four. They self-released their first single in early 1980 with the help of Rough Trade and came to the attention of Malicious Damage, a label & management operation, formed to release the early works of Killing Joke. This association produced the band's biggest success, the 1980 indie chart hit "Agent Orange" (featuring Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman on synth). Versions Of A Life collects Ski Patrol's recorded output in one place for the first time. This anthology also shines a light on the darkly comic, paranoid, often elegiac gutter poetry of the late Ian Lowery, who passed away in 2001.  Including the band's first two singles, previously unreleased mixes of their third single and three unreleased songs from their last studio session. All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket with an unreleased photo of the band. Each copy includes a reproduction of a promotional poster with lyrics from 1981 designed by Mike Coles, the Malicious Damage house artist responsible for the label's iconic album and single covers.

With tours in the States confirmed with label mates Against Me! and The Hold Steady, and with plans being made for a summer of festivals plus a full UK and European run ear-marked for Autumn - Cheap Girls are set to have a fantastic 2014.

The new solo album! Very nice packaging with 24-page booklet including the lyrics printed inside out! Sivert Hoeyem is a Norwegian singer, best known as the vocalist of the rock band Madrugada. After the band broke up following the death of Robert Buras in 2007, he has enjoyed huge success as a solo artist and all of his five studio albums have entered at number one in the sales charts and have earned Platinum plaques in Norway. Sivert Hoeyem has been touring Europe after the release each of his solo albums, and several times with Madrugada. "Endless Love" contains 10 songs all written by Sivert, produced by Ulf 'Rockis' Ivarsson (of Swedish band Thastroem fame) and mixed by Michael Ilbert at the legendary Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin.

Third Man Records unearths Neil Young's A Letter Home. "An unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past''


PRESS: 'Originally made in 1947, the Voice-o-Graph is the only public vinyl record recording booth of its kind left in the world. After refurbishing it, Third Man opened the booth on Record Store Day 2013 and now anyone can come in and record up to two minutes of audio that's cut onto a six-inch phonograph disc. Young stopped by Third Man last year where he recorded a cover of Bert Jansch's "The Needle of Death" on the Voice-o-Graph last year for a special tribute to the acoustic guitar master.' - Rolling Stone

The limited-edition box featureS an expanded edition of the record, presented on two vinyl LPs (the standard version and the "audiophile" version)

CD, DVD with comments from the producers and engineers, seven vinyl 6" singles, a download card for the "audiophile" version, and a 32-page booklet.

The Lively Ones third long player was originally released in 1963 on the legendary LA surf label, Del-Fi. Featuring 12 guitar and sax heavy sides including ripping renditions of Dick Dale's "Miserlou" and Santo & Johnny's "Sleep Walk", Surf City is probably best known to younger generations for the classic surf instrumental, "Surf Rider", which was featured in the closing credits of Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film, Pulp Fiction. Though they may not be a household name, The Lively Ones are in the top tier of 1960s surf rock groups and Surf City is perhaps their finest moment.

Double A side single is pressed in neon pink vinyl and limited to 3000 copies worldwide.





The new songs were produced by Michael Beinhorn and recorded in Los Angeles, California and are the first new solo material Courtney has released since 2004's America's Sweetheart. You Know My Name is an undeniable slice of perfect punk pop and Wedding Day a visceral onslaught of guitar riffs with Courtney's customary impassioned vocals. Both tracks Courtney cites as some of the best music she has made in years.



As front-woman of Hole and solo artist in her own right, Love's stage presence that John Peel once described as "verged on the heroic... generating a tension which I cannot remember having felt before from any stage" has the presence and lyrics to make her a significant iconic figure in music & pop culture.

'Court The Dark' is Hydrogen Sea's debut release.

Hydrogen Sea = multi-instrumentalist PJ Seaux and singer Birsen Uçar. PJ plays guitar, triggers the wavy synths and drops the (gentle) beats. All at once. Birsen complements their distinctive sound with her ethereal vocals and moony lyrics.

Met haar muziek bonkt Reena Riot je tegen het trillende voorhoofd, ze hakt je ingewanden in zwevende stukken, en ze jaagt ijzeren vlinders in je buik. Kunnen witte meisjes de blues herdefiniëren, een nieuw maar vertrouwd geluid geven, en tot een genre maken dat ook vandaag tijdeloos blijkt Ja, dat kunnen ze, zeker als ze Reena Riot heten.

Laten we bij dit alles niet vergeten dat achter Reena Riot Naomi Sijmons schuilt, die het geenszins van vreemden heeft, want haar goeie ouwe vader, wijlen mijn gabber Fons Sijmons, heeft haar ongetwijfeld de paplepel doorgegeven waarmee uit een vertroebelde en toch ook vrolijke geest muziek van grote klasse wordt geschept.

Ik zag Naomi al lopen toen haar hoogzwangere moeder zich aan de zijde van Fons door Gent bewoog. De trots en de verwachtingen van Fons, die toen reeds al was het slechts één bassnaar kon doen zingen, was bijkans niet te evenaren. Ik zag Naomi hier in Gent als blond hummeltje, als klein meisje, als groter meisje, als de jonge vrouw die Reena Riot tot een van haar aliassen koos. We hebben allemaal wel een paar aliassen, die ons niet per se een voor een op de juiste manier identificeren, maar met Reena Riot heeft Naomi Sijmons een mogelijk zelfbeeld geschapen dat haar gegoten zit als een glinsterende handschoen.

Ik wou dat Fons er nog was, zodat ik hem kon feliciteren met zijn dochter. En met haar muziek. Want daar draait het om: Reena Riot is geen poppetje, geen pin up, geen babe van dertien in een dozijn, welneen, ze is een rasechte muzikante. Dat bewijst ze glorieus met haar EP die de nummers 'Stop Reverse', 'I belong to you', 'Army boots', 'Sing' en 'The Needle' bevat. Het zijn stuk voor stuk songs die zowel qua muziek als qua lyrics in Vlaanderen een unieke standaard zetten: die van absolute kwaliteit, mede door de productie van de grootse Mauro. Ik wil Reena Riot niet gaan vergelijken met Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell of wie dan ook, want hoewel dit namen als klokken zijn, wier beïnvloeding goed staat op je curriculum vitae, heeft Reena Riot nu al haar eigen stem gevonden, en de nummers op haar EP bewijzen dit met verve. Ik kan deze EP tien keer beluisteren en ik vind 'm steeds beter. Daarom heb ik 'm ondertussen meer dan twintig keer beluisterd.

'Stop Reverse' is mooi op een indringend-zachte manier en omgekeerd, en doet mij denken aan The Sundays, een groep die ik hogelijk waardeer. 'I belong to you' zou de noodkreet van een oude, gekwelde maar wijze en energieke vogel kunnen zijn, die z'n eigen boom ter beschikking heeft. 'Army boots' heeft de schitterende beginverzen 'Put on your army boots/ And meet me by the church'. Op je legerlaarzen naar de kerk. Een beeld om in te kaderen. Ook dit lijkt een klaaglied, maar er gloort hoop. 'Sing' bewijst eens te meer dat Reena Riot zowel teder kan zingen als uithalen met woorden die kippenvel kunnen bezorgen. Er zit tevens een melodieus motief in dat de hele dag in het hoofd van de luisteraar blijft hangen. 'The Needle' schrijnt met tekst en zang en piano en melancholische drums, en een gitaar die van lieverlede de keel toewringt.

De vijf nummers lijken wel geschreven en uitgevoerd door een performer met Engels als moedertaal en de noodzaak tot zingen in de bloedbaan. En aldus ben ik er na het beluisteren van de EP zeker van: Reena Riot zal een ster aan ons firmament worden die niet zal ophouden met rijzen, en daar mag de Vlaamse muziekwereld bijzonder gelukkig mee zijn.
