The eighth full-length album Ghost Reveries by Swedish heavy metal band Opeth is the epitome of what metal should be: a work of art. The album is filled with heavy, intricate, and precisely performed guitar riffs. You can't avoid the monstrous riffs in a song like 'The Grand Conjuration'. As the band's main composer, Mikael Åkerfeldt successfully managed to transfer his dark emotions into all those twisted solos, surrounded then by wall of even thicker riffs. He's blending classical clean harmonies with guttural growls. Opeth's technical capacity mark them out from both their followers and their peers and accordingly Ghost Reveries is definitely one of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. This album is a culmination of everything Opeth have worked toward throughout their career. It's fully realized, stunningly beautiful, and emotionally fragmented.

The highly successful Swedish metal band Opeth rose to fame in the early zero's, after releasing a couple of fan highlights. Their first world tour after the 2001 release Blackwater Park was the start of some big album sellers and great artistic songs.

Wolves In The Throne Room will be releasing the sorrowful and grand self-titled debut album by Cascadian funeral doom band Vouna through their own Artemisia Records. All music on Vouna was composed and all instruments performed by front-person and fellow native to the Pacific Northwest Yianna Bekris, previously of Vradiazei, Eigenlicht, and Sadhaka. This debut evokes the devastating and beautiful journey of becoming the last person on Earth. Razor sharp tremolo picked guitars cut through the heart like a knife. Mournfully sung vocals and cinematic melodies are combined with crushing doom drumming, while layers of primitive '90s digital synths conjure a lush and rugged soundscape. The music is inspired and influenced by Finnish funeral doom, Eastern European black metal, and Greek folk music, a must-hear for fans of My Dying Bride, Skepticism, Shape Of Despair, and similar acts.

Originally released in April 1996 on Epic Records, this was the band's second studio album. The title refers to president Regan's description of the former Soviet Union. 'Reverse Of Rebirth In Universe' sees the band return to their old label Riot Season for the first time since 2012's 'IAO Chant From The Melting Paraiso Underground Freak Out' (CD still available). Both label and band have gone on some wonderful journeys during that time apart but both felt the stars were finally correctly realigned to renew their partnership in all things weird.
 
Long time AMT fans will immediately recognise some of the song titles listed on the album sleeve here. But the songs themselves have been reworked and transformed far away from their original versions. New boy Jyonson Tsu's quiet, almost whispered vocals bring a whole new aura to proceedings, despite the familiar riffs hidden in the depths below them. It's so laid back in places it's practically horizontal, with only occasional trademark piercing guitar squeals threatening to destroy the peace and calm. The whole of side two is taken up with the twenty minute epic 'Black Summer Song' .. and if this is an indicator to where the AMT mothership is heading going forwards we're all in for another fucked up and magical ride.

The inaugural release in Gotta Groove Records' OH Wax series is the 1985 album by Witch - entitled "Salem's Rise' - originally self-released through the Eargasm Productions label. The original pressing from 1985 has long been sold out and sought after by heavy metal collectors. Occasionally, a copy will pop up for sale online for several hundred dollars. GGR tracked down the original label's founder to re-release this long lost Ohio private pressing.

Notes from original executive producer and founder of Eargasm Records, Tim Grogean:

"Ted George and I were introduced in 1984 when he came to my studio in Dayton, Ohio asking me to produce a single for him. He was a shredding guitarist and songwriter from Versailles, Ohio. The first single release was 'Chained Heat' b/w 'Rock-N-Roll Dreams' — released on Eargasm Records in 1984. Ted handled all guitars, with Jon Menger on drums and Larry 'LD' Hampshire on keyboards.

After the completion of 'Chained Heat,' Ted yearned to write a full-length album; and I was looking for a project to present to larger record companies in LA and NY. Songwriting and rehearsals started in Versailles, Ohio with many nights jamming in the basement of brothers Tony and Dave Chappie. Tony (on drums) and Dave (on bass) were accompanied by Ted (on guitar), and Ace Mathews (on vocals). Pre-production was done at Eargasm studios, and into Audio Productions we went to record one hell of a heavy metal album.

Many of long nights and heavy parties ensued for the next month, as the band hammered out the ten songs on "Salem's Rise." The instruments fell in very solid with Ted's fast guitar work and solid rhythm section. Tim and Mike Niklas engineered the recording at Audio Productions. Tim was the executive producer as well, and assisted in songwriting and guitar. The album was Mastered at QCA in Cincinnati, Ohio (where it was also originally manufactured on vinyl). Tony Chappie and I wrote the drum solo; and incomparable pianist Larry 'LD' Hampshire again came to Ted's side for the keyboards. Yes, it is true; we pulled out all the stops in producing a dark heavy metal album. LD Hampshire provided awesome devilish backing tracks and backwards masking. Listen to 'Something Evil' for some great examples of this.

The album was released in 1985, with the release party held at Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio. I opened up as a solo act. The album sold out almost immediately, but the large record companies solicited at the time felt the tide was turning to new wave and big hair metal, away from the heavy metal sound of the late 70s. Unfortunately, no big record deal was inked.

Most of the musicians involved on Salem's Rise continue to play and record to this day. Ted went on to front many bands and work with other artists, including Rick Derringer. He is now known as 'Fast Eddie' due to his freakish speed on the guitar. The Chappie brothers eventually became businessmen. Less is known about the prospects of singer Ace Mathews. 'LD' continued to play in bands with Tim and record in Dayton-area studios. I went on to work with bands like Rush, Sponge, Days of the New, Sun; and I continue to record and tour in my band Amplified.'

ARCHITECTS is a band who've never shied away from challenging the world around them. After suffering the loss of co-founder /guitarist Tom Searle to cancer in 2016, the band returned to the road and the studio in 2017 releasing the hit track 'Doomsday', that ended up on the BBC Radio 1 playlist and went on to be one the bands most successful songs. Long lauded as some of modern metal's most progressive-thinking minds, for the past decade, the quintet have pushed boundaries, redefined genres, and never feared having to question themselves in order for their art to leave its mark on this earth. ARCHITECTS, is a band like few others; The quintet all practice a vegan lifestyle, tour with a consciousness about their footprint on the world, and devote time and energies to environmental causes. Their 8th studio album, Holy Hell is the return to the studio for a band that have come through the grieving process with more drive and determination than ever before. Drummer Dan Searle- Desbiens takes on the helm as lyricist and writes music with his bandmates vocalist Sam Carter, guitarist Adam Christianson, bassist Alex Dean and new guitarist Josh Middleton.

BURNING WITCHES, founded in 2015, are not just one of the hottest exports from Switzerland. Well no, the Swiss girls are one of the most interesting newcomers in Old School Heavy Metal to emerge in the past few years. The band already bewitched the scene press with their first single 'Burning Witches' (2016) and the 'Demo of the month' slot in German Metal Hammer and Rock Hard. For sure, their bruising Heavy Metal, which also includes influences from Power and Speed as well as traditional Metal, thrills with great songwriting from band founder Romana and vocalist Seraina who is often compared with the legendary Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST).

It's not surprising that so much talent led to a spectacular self-titled debut album that was released in 2017, that caught the attention of Nuclear Blast Records, who quickly signed the band. Laziness or downtime are words nobody involved in BURNING WITCHES knows and so, the next witching masterpiece is already brewing in the steel cauldron. The book MALLEUS MALEFICARUM (a.k.a. THE HAMMER OF THE WITCHES, in German: 'Hexenhammer') that legitimated the witch hunting in 1486 is the lyrical centerpiece. It is about oppression, violence against the weak and manipulation of fact - all of which are more relevant than ever. The new album 'Hexenhammer' was again produced by the same team as it's precursor 'Burning Witches' in the Little Creek Studio with Pulver (PRO PAIN, DESTRUCTION) and DESTRUCTION's legend Schmier. The witches circle hasn't existed long but is already starting to cast it's spell.

Cult Leader is a chaotic band from Salt Lake City, Utah. 'A Patient Man' was recorded and engineered by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios (Converge, Nails, High On Fire). From the first hits of opener 'I Am Healed' Cult Leader take listeners on a sonic rollercoaster ride. Much of the album follows this blueprint. Songs like 'Curse of Satisfaction', 'Craft of Mourning', and 'Share My Pain' are driven by a weave work of unorthodox metallic riffing and fueled by hyper-aggressive percussion. While the tech- nical proficiency is impressive, it's in their use of dynamics where they truly shine. The album contains four beautifully brooding epics; 'To: Achlys', 'A World of Joy', title track 'A Patient Man', and 'The Broken Right Hand of God'. Each one of them carries a maturation and sense of melody that few 'extreme' bands have within their arsenal. Proving that aggressive music still has much to offer the world in terms of originality, creativity, and emotion.

David Holmes was drawn to DIE HEXEN by their 'magical sensibility that has both shades of dark and light, which is something that always appeals to me in music'. After featuring in his edition of the famed Late Night Tales compilation with a take on the original suicide song 'Gloomy Sunday', DIE HEXEN returns to expand upon their dark ambient journey towards transcendence with an eagerly awaited debut album.

DIE HEXEN's genre eschewing synth driven compositions draw inspiration from the disturbing beauty of Hieronymus Bosch's artwork and several brushes with death, evoking a spirit who traverses realms of the underworld to bring forth knowledge of an Ancient past and in doing so, to reveal the not so distant future.

The Garden of Unearthly Delights transports the listener through strange visions of darkness, beauty, creation, destruction, death & rebirth. An exorcism of body, gender, tribe towards a place of ultimate transcendence.

Somewhat of a polymath, DIE HEXEN has already shown their prowess with live performances part music/part performance art spectacle, as an avant-garde filmmaker and as an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, sound designer and film scorer.

DIE HEXEN's divergent interests from Japanese Butoh theatre to Wiccanism, Shamanism, celestial mysticism and time travel informs their method, as they explain themself; 'The compositions I write are not written, at least not by me. They appear to me as audio/visual hallucinations. I can hear, visualise, and feel the whole composition before me. My hands know instinctively what notes to play and like a stream of consciousness, voices emerge. Having suffered severe head trauma that resulted in a heightening of the senses, the theme of death is an increasingly present theme in my work. With this, my perception of death and what is beyond changes as I contort between this world and the next physically and mentally, musically and visually. Working with music or film, my vision is one. The calling to express these auditory hallucinations is inevitable'.

Carver City is the commercially and critically successful fourth album by CKY. It's a concept album about the fictional town, a holiday resort plagued by crime. The experimental album is different from their previous alternative metal albums. Synthesizers playing a prominent role on the album, while drummer Jess Margera plays rhythms compared to the 80 neo prog rock/metal. Their unique sounds can be heard in the versatility of this record. The album was recorded by guitarist Chad Ginsburg and he does a great job of balancing the instruments and vocals, ensuring that each individual part is audible and crisp.

Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop is the fifth studio album by one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock, Jeff Beck. Together with keyboard player Tony Hymas and drummer Terry Bozzio he recorded this album. They won the award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 1990 Grammys for this release. The instrumental fusion tunes are diverse and on no other album Jeff tried out mixing so much musical styles. His excellent guitar play and the memorable melodies marks this release as one of his finest albums. 'Behind the Veil' is a subtle song, leaning on a reggae groove and Beck's lower register statements. The more sensitive tune 'Where Were You' makes Beck almost sing the melody on his guitar. The album is wonderful produced and a strong addition to his impressive catalogue.

Look My Way is the third studio album by the hardcore punk band Madball. On the raw hardcore album they focusing on the hard life of the streets. Full speed guitar riffs expanding the screams/raps by Freddy Cricien. The overall power of the music is heavy and in balance with the depth of the lyrics. From the breakdown in 'Cut Off' to the aggressiveness of 'Moment of Truth', it's all truly Madball.

The American hardcore punk band Agnostic Front formed their side project Madball in the late '80s. Frontman Roger Miret let his brother Freddy Cricien perform the lead vocals.

Low was the first Testament release not to feature two of its founding members Alex Skolnick (guitar) and Louie Clemente (drums). But even without their company they created a true masterpiece. They replaced Skolnick with death-metal prodigy James Murphy (Death, Obituary, Disincarnate), and put drummer Mike Tempesta (Exodus) behind the kit. The dark and raging sounds represent some of their best work. This thing is utterly crushing from the second you hit 'play,' full of choppy, claustrophobic riffs that are somewhere between thrash and death metal.

Testament is often credited as one of the most popular and influential bands of the thrash metal scene, having sold over 14 million albums worldwide. When writing about A New Kind Of Horror in the record's liner notes, Anaal Nathrakh vocalist Dave Hunt is succinct in his description: "This is not a happy album, it is bitter, vengeful, sarcastic, sardonic, violent, terrified and horrified, terrifying and horrifying in equal measure. Above all, it is human, and all that that entails. It's as sincere as we could make it." Those exposed to the ten tracks comprising the band's tenth full-length will be unable to deny the truth to these words, for lyrically, musically and sonically it is a punishing listen mired in darkness and seething with raw emotion. When writing about A New Kind Of Horror in the record's liner notes, Anaal Nathrakh vocalist Dave Hunt is succinct in his description: "This is not a happy album, it is bitter, vengeful, sarcastic, sardonic, violent, terrified and horrified, terrifying and horrifying in equal measure. Above all, it is human, and all that that entails. It's as sincere as we could make it." Those exposed to the ten tracks comprising the band's tenth full-length will be unable to deny the truth to these words, for lyrically, musically and sonically it is a punishing listen mired in darkness and seething with raw emotion. Fifth full length album from Crossfaith the Osaka, Japan-based heavy metal band formed in 2006. The album is set in an alternate near-future. Angels are the ruling class and they maintain their world order through the use of AI and technology, but this process dehumanises people and turns them into drones. The release follows their 2015 album Xeno which reached #14 on the Japanese Oricon chart and earned praise from Kerrang, Rock Sound, Metal Hammer, and support from BBC Radio 1.

The Spider's Lullabye is the sixth studio album by King Diamond released in 1995. Unlike other King Diamond albums, it is not a full concept album. Only half the songs form a single plot. It was also the first King Diamond album to be released on the Metal Blade label. The Spider's Lullabye is the first album to feature guitarist Herb Simonsen, bassist Chris Estes and drummer Darrin Anthony.

Pushing both the death metal and progressive elements of their signature sound harder than ever, The Outer Ones represents Revocation at their boldest, most aggressive and most complex. "I knew that I wanted to go in a darker direction, and this is our most death metal album to date," states vocalist/guitarist Dave Davidson. "Sometimes when death metal bands go down the prog route they lose some of that edge, but we wanted to keep the aggression at the forefront of what we do while still pushing our boundaries." Moving away from the societal and historical themes that informed 2016's Great is Our Sin, this time Davidson has immersed himself in the fantastic, evoking one of the great writers of the sci-fi/horror genre. "The title is my ode to H.P. Lovecraft and the entities of pure cosmic horror that rule that universe he created. Since the new music we were writing was so evil and spacey in sections it seemed to be the right title to fit the overall vibe. But while the lyrical content is largely influenced by such writings, in every allegory there is of course some reflection of the real world, so I enjoy writing in a way that could have one overlaying meaning and then another deeper, symbolic meaning as well." While the four members of Revocation - Davidson, guitarist Dan Gargiulio, bassist Brett Bamberger, and drummer Ash Pearson - are spread around North America without the convenience of being able to jam, this does not impinge on the creative process. If anything, this ensures that they make the most of the time spent together, and they maintained an even greater level of quality control than on The Outer Ones predecessors. "The songs came together pretty naturally, however, this album has the most revisions to riffs and song structures that we've ever had. I had a lot of material written, and had a good amount of time to work on it between tours, so I used that time to really dissect every part of each song. I might be feeling one riff one day and then the next day have some sort of revelation and would go in a totally different direction. All of those revisions definitely benefitted the final product." True to Davidson's promise that it is their most death metal release, its abrasiveness is evident on first exposure to both devout followers and those new to Revocation. Destroying all comers with opener "Of Unworldly Origin", the fury that seethes through this and the tracks that follow is palpable, and much of it makes for deeply uncomfortable yet always compelling listening

A compelling abrasive shoegaze band, dealing with the aesthetics of contrasting sounds. Heavy like a gloomy dream yet soothingly vibrant. The vulnerable soft floating voice of Manchester's Isa Holliday underneath layers of grungy shoegaze soaked noisepop, seeking shelter from an f'ed up world. They debuted live in March 2017, released 'Ease' their first e.p. in May 2017 through Flood, White Russian and Dingleberry Records. Played Roadburn festival 2017 in The Netherlands, Fluff fest in Czech Republic, toured Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, UK, Hungary. Played shows with bands like Brutus, Oathbreaker, Sleepmakeswaves, Turnover, Nothing.... all of this in their first six months of being an active band. The band recorded their debut LP 'Aurora' towards the end of 2017 at The Ranch Production house in Southampton with Neil D. Kennedy who produced bands like Milk Teeth, Creeper, Boston Manor,... 'Aurora' was mastered at The Atomic Garden by Jack Shirley known for his work with Deafheaven, Oathbreaker, The Smith Street Band.... Slow Crush are bridging boundaries with their own distinct sound between Shoegaze, Postrock, indierock, Heavypop, postpunk and Grunge.

Wolfheart`s music embraces the sheer force and beauty of Finnish nature with fiery passion. San Francisco-based post-black metal act Bosse-de-Nage have returned to The Flenser for their fifth studio album titled Further Still. This latest album sees the band eschew the sprawling arrangements and hypnotic repetition of their previous efforts in favor of tight, propulsive song structures. It is deliberately succinct in approach while maintaining the band's unique lyrical style set to unpredictable melodies.

Bosse-de-Nage takes their name from a character in the book The Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician by the French symbolist author Alfred Jarry. They recorded their first demo in 2006, which was subsequently released on cassette by Aesop Dekker's The Funeral Agency label. Their first album was recorded the following year, but the band became inactive for awhile, and their debut sat on the shelves until The Flenser released it in 2010. This sparked new life into the project and they recorded and released two more self-titled albums over the next two years. In 2012 BDN released a split EP with fellow Bay Area 'blackgaze' upstarts Deafheaven. They subsequently released their monstrous and surreal masterpiece, All Fours (Profound Lore), in 2015 to critical applause. Further Still sees the band refine their multitude of ideas, distilling them to their most basic forms yet retaining their idiosyncratic footprint.
