David Anthony & Derrick Harriott & The Crystalites - All Night / Tickler

A fine vocal Rocksteady, 'All Night' is also known as a killer dubplate owned by Duke Vin, who is regarded as a pioneer of the sound system culture in UK. On the flip ''The Tickler' was more popular than the A-side, and in UK, allegedly no one else besides Duke Vin owned the vinyl until the 90's. This song was surely a very special one in his Dub Plate box!

Derrick Harriott & Bobby Ellis & The Desmond Miles Seven - Keep On Dancing / Now We Know (instrumental)

Taken from the epic 'Rock Steady Party' album, this Derrick Harriott's praise of the Rocksteady dancehall is for the first time ever released as a 7" single. The B-side, 'Now We Know', is an original single version of the song and is a great example of how good The Crystalites played the rhythms.

Fogh Depot - Fogh Depot

Fogh Depot are weaving a cozy melancholic cocoon in the midst of a looming, cold, unwelcoming metropolis of Moscow. The simplest way to define Fogh Depot's music would be to call it seductive brooding jazz with an electronic twist. Fogh Depot conjoin the unconjoinable, combining distorted low resolution samples with pure, atmospheric piano chords, multilayered drones with bebop changes, four-to-the-floor beat with polyrhythm, simple, easy-to-remember tunes with sophisticated effects for woodwinds, springy bass grooves with timeless ambient soundscapes

Kalbata & Mixmonster - Inna Skateland

The contemporary reggae world was rocked and happily shocked when Freestyle Records unleashed Kalbata & Mixmonster's Congo Beat The Drum album in 2014. The wholly analogue, old school production combined with the classic Jamaican vocalists featured such as Little John, Major Mackerel, Echo Minott had everyone from Toddla T to Robert Elms absolutely raving about the albums genuine roots and culture feel.

And now Freestyle presents another single, Inna Skateland, that features legend Puddy Roots on vocals, whose voice is brilliantly well suited to the dub heavy, reverb laden music. The flip side, Skateland Dub, is a brand new track, not featured on the album and is 100% exclusive to this brand new release!

Peppino De Luca / I Marc 4 - L'uomo Dagli Occhi Di Ghiaccio (original Soundtrack) 180g

Originally released on 'cult' Pegaso promotional label, "THE MAN WITH ICY EYES" soundtrack was pressed on very few copies like all Pegaso editions 'out of commerce', becoming a truly sought-after gem among Record Collectors of the genre. Trombonist and arranger Giuseppe De Luca, who died shortly after, wrote this magnificent score in 1971, ripping off the main theme from "Lady In Cement" by Hugo Montenegro from the same year. The high music in here is played by the MARC 4 (Maurizio Majorana on bass, Carlo Pes on guitar, Antonello Vannucchi organ) feat. Giuseppe De Luca at trumpet and Vincenzo Restuccia at drums. Magnificent vocals by the best scatting queen Edda Dell'Orso and chorus by I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandroni. KILLER!

Red Dragon - Jam Down Posse / Jam Down Posse Version

"Jam Down Posse" by Red Dragon was recorded on the classic Studio One "Far East" rhythm, so people might feel there is something similar to the hit song 'Tune In' by Cocoa Tea. King Jammy released two one-way albums on this rhythm and featured many singers and deejays on them. This song by Red Dragon is from one of those albums and one of the best ever on this rhythm.

Wayne Smith - Icky All Over / Icky All Over Version

It is well-known that Wayne Smith, who was deeply associated with Jammys in the production of the 'Sleng Teng' rhythm, was an essential individual in embracing the digital revolution of the Reggae and Jamaican musical history. The tough bassline, symbolizing Jammys' real sound, perfectly fuses with the young Wayne Smith's high key voice to create another killer tune.

STRUT in partnership with Tiger's Milk present Quema Quema Quema the first international record from famed Peruvian Band Kanaku Y El Tigre.

'The only people for me are the mad ones, mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved and desirous of everything' Jack Kerouac, 'On The Road' (1957) I f 'On The Road' lead characters Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty were modern day beatniks, they would find spirited company in Kanaku y El Tigre, a Peruvian collective who
release their sophomore album (and first internationally), 'Quema, Quema, Quema', on Strut / Tiger's Milk in May 2015.
'Quema Quema Quema' ('Burn Burn Burn' in Spanish) is the product of two years honing the Kanaku sound at the band's Lima studio. The result is a record feverish in its intensity which screams with joy and cries for help in the same breath.
Back in 2010, their debut album 'Caracoles' (2010) brought Kanaku's creative duo Nico Saba and Bruno Bellatin considerable success in Peru with a set of quirky songs inspired by American folk. Five years on, 'Quema Quema Quema' has a whole different atmosphere - euphoric, unapologetically feel-good hooks littered with electronic jitters, ghostly delays, serene Hawaiian slide guitars and a chorus of other-wordly vocal harmonies.
Featuring ten songs including two sung in English, 'Quema Quema Quema' is led by the tortured, Impassioned vocals of lead singer Nico Saba and the musical relationship between he and Bruno is key. 'With the new album, we have focused consistently on the melody and the song despite a multiinstrumental approach,' explains Bruno. 'We have always shared this process of dreaming up ideas - we both bring light and darkness into the room and use each other as creative mirrors.'
'Quema Quema Quema' features some illustrious guest vocalists adding to the Kanaku palette: Almodovar actress Leonor Watling (star of 'Talk To Her'), Peruvian singer-songwriter Pamela Rodriguez and Cecimonster frontman Sergio Saba.
Their strong musical partnership stems from the '90s, when, in their early teens, they were kicking the dust together in a punk band in downtown Lima. Now in their late twenties and both now bilingual having lived for periods in the UK and the States, their sound owes much to western music forms. Despite being very different characters with near opposite tastes in music, as life-long friends, they see the fruits of their creative partnership as a mutual appreciation living life charged, intense and always ready to 'Burn, Burn, Burn'. The lyrics of lead single, 'Si Te Mueres Manana' encapsulate the Kanaku philosophy: 'if you die tomorrow, make sure you you've done everything you ever wanted'.
To complement the fluid production and sonic oddities peppering 'Quema Quema Quema', Argentinian graphic artist and cartoonist Ricardo Liniers brings his unique childlike surrealism to the album artwork.

Ariel Kalma - An Evolutionary Music (original Recordings: 1972 - 1979)

An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 - 1979) compiles unreleased recordings from the archives of multiversal artist Ariel Kalma. Concerned as much with musicality as spiritual facility, Kalma's work vibrates aside fellow travelers along the great rainbow in curved air of the 1970s avant-garde. Ariel Kalma's boundary-blurring electronic music is heard here in radiant detail across a selection of work spanning his early free-jazz and spoken word trips to his infinite modular synthesizer and analogue drum machine meditations. Kalma's story is one of world travel, musical discovery and ego-abandonment. Yet for an artist who often discarded public recognition in favor of the ascetic truths in music making, An Evolutionary Music offers the imprint of an outright auteur. Born in France, but rarely in one place for long, Ariel Kalma's 1970s migrations took flight through the decade's furthest spaces of musical and spiritual invention. As a hired horn for well-known French groups, the young musician toured as far as India in 1972, a place where Kalma would learn circular breathing techniques enabling him to sustain notes without pause against tape-looping harmonies configured through his homemade effects units. Those effects evolved from Kalma's loyalty to a beloved dual ReVox set-up— two tape machines 'chained' together to form a primitive delay unit. Over looped saxophone melodies, Kalma would mix in all shades of polyphonic color,
synthesizing fragments of poetry with ambient space or setting modal flute melodies to rippling drum machine patterns and starlit field recordings. In France during the mid-1970s, Kalma was staffed as a technician at Pierre Henry's legendary Institut National Audiovisuel, Groupe de Recherches Musicales (INA GRM) studios - the same music concréte laboratory that spawned masterpieces by members Luc Ferrari, Iannis Xenakis, and Bernard Parmegiani. Like his predecessors and colleagues at INA GRM, Kalma's relationship to sound was both formal and non-hierarchical. To Kalma, all music existed as related universal patterns, in perfect harmony with the people, places and environments it was created. Kalma's recorded output of the 1970s culminated in the now scarcelyavailable Les Temps des Moissons (trans. The Time of Harvest) in 1975 and Osmose in 1978, a masterpiece of birdsong exploration. Osmose is double album featuring sculptor Richard Tinti, who had supplied Kalma with hours of field recordings from the rainforests of Borneo. An Evolutionary Music harvests uncatalogued music made between Kalma's private press records and onward through the many small-batch cassette releases Kalma would tender. With this collection of musical hybridity and distinct genre-corrosion, Ariel Kalma's righteous bucking of both popular music trends and the academic tenets of the avant-garde falls squarely in the spirit of other renegades of sacred new-music such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Charlemagne Palestine.

Ata Kak - Obaa Sima

Ata Kak's cassette Obaa Sima fell on deaf ears when it was self-released in Ghana and Canada in 1994. The music on the recording - an amalgam of highlife, Twi-language rap, funk and disco - is presented with the passion of a Prince record and the DIY-bedroom-recording lo-fi charm of early Chicago house music. The astute self-taught song craft and visionary blend of sounds and rhythms has made the album a left-field cult favorite among adventurous listeners worldwide. Awesome Tapes From Africa founder Brian Shimkovitz found the tape in 2002 in Cape Coast, Ghana - one of only a few ever pressed - and later made it the inaugural post on the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog. Hundreds of thousands of downloads, YouTube views, music video tributes and remixes, as well as years of mystery regarding Ata Kak's whereabouts, culminate in this remastered release featuring rare photos and the full back story of one of the internet age's most enigmatic musicians

Jose Prates/miecio Askanasy - Tam ..tam...tam!

In August of 2014 a request was sent out by Gilles Peterson for someone to issue the incredibly rare Brazilian LP Tam...Tam...Tam...!
This is because it's an extraordinary album, only issued once in 1958 as part of Mieco Askanasy's 1950s touring 'Braziliana' show. It's so rare not even Gilles Peterson has a copy.

The original music was written and produced with José Prates and as an album it stands out as a keystone in the development of the Brazilian sound that was to explode around the world in the decade to follow. This is the first time this landmark LP has been issued since 1958. An original, if you ever found one, would cost you in excess of £1000.

THE MUSIC:
The reason Gilles Peterson wanted this album reissued is because it is so extraordinary. Musically it works on a number of levels - firstly that the solid blueprint of 1960s Brazilian music runs throughout it. For example, if you listen to Track Three Side One 'Nana Imborô' you will hear 'Mas-Que-Nada'.

Secondly, the infectious rhythms, melodies and exotic sounds that emanate from this album are deep, raw and totally engaging. And the more you listen to Tam...Tam...Tam...! the more you hear its importance and influence.

This rare reissue comes at a crucial time, when in our connected and information saturated world few important things have escaped attention and reappraisal. Finding anything new and genuinely incredible is a rare feat.

Nigel Wrench - Za86

Nigel Wrench

Za86

CassetteTTW86
The Tapeworm
23.02.2015

A 25 year old radio reporter's personal journey in the final, most repressive moments of a hated regime. The last years of apartheid were the most brutal as a low-level civil war was battled out on the dusty streets of South Africa's black townships. Released on the 25th anniversary of the day Nelson Mandela walked to freedom, ZA86 is edited from nine tapes in the unique cassette archive of Turnstyle News, unlocked for the first time from a Cape Town cellar. It takes the listener to a violent world with moments of great beauty. The reporter, far from being edited out, is very much present, as are the thumps and bumps he hears in his headphones. From a May Day call to arms by Winnie Mandela to the extreme views of white right wingers; from 19 year old platoon leaders to the aftermath of an attack by police and soldiers in Soweto; from the words of envoy Terry Waite to the funeral of a television cameraman and the Band Aid-like pop song released by the apartheid regime, ZA86 unflinchingly documents the disturbing reality of 1986 in South Africa. A journey into the heart of apartheid.

Luis Enriquez And His Electronic Men - Electronia

"Don't let the title fool you; this is not a record of electronic music, but of twelve tunes performed by a small instrumental combo: three guitars, drums, piano and a double bass. There is a sixth instrument: the sound recording machine, which functions electronically. By amplifying, superimposing, drawing out and reducing the sounds created by the instrumental combo, the electronic recorder imbues each piece of music, be it already well-known or an "original", with a brand-new, highly unusual and extremely attractive flavor." (from the original Lp liner notes.

Don't let the band name fool you: this is Luis Enriquez BACALOV that plays an exciting mix of instrumental beat-surf-rock'n'roll with the help of Enrico Ciacci, Alessandroni and Tosoni on guitar, the Munaro brothers on drums and Simeone on double bass. Enriquez himself plays organ, harpsichord and electric piano. In some pieces he also uses the "Onde Martenot", an electronic instrument named after his inventor. The track list mixes originals composed by Bacalov and a few covers, including an awesome version of Morricone's Ninna Nanna.

Track list: Side A: Incontro a Roma (Enriquez); Spanish Drag (Enriquez); Walk Don't Run '64 (John Smith); Il Guardiano (Tosoni); Ninna Nanna '65 (Morricone); Lady Guitar (De Mutiis). Side B: Fender with Anger (Enriquez); Foglie Gialle (Enriquez); Tequila (Chuck Rio); Montemario by Night (Enriquez); Guitar Spyder (De Mutiis); Rigel 1 (Enriquez).

Originally released by RCA in 1965. Original artwork. Sound restoring and master done by Roberto Zamori at Film Music Art Studio.

Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers - Cranes And Carpets

Berlin-based quintet Onom Agemo & the Disco Jumpers follow up their 7" single - 2 Feet / Kibili - with an album of poly-rhythmic afro grooves, sax and psyched-out synths. The group has developed a unique groove and style of playing, constructing a collection of eight songs, that throws together tight and funky influences from
Morocco and Ethiopia with crunchy analogue synths, spacey organs and effects, and fluid sax and flute lines for a sound that's all their own. The LP is a collection of compositions by traveling sax man JohannesSchleiermacher, inspired by his journeys through the world. The band even travelled to Morocco for playing and recording with a quartet of percussionists/ singers in the Issawa tradition, a Sufi Trance Brotherhood in central Morocco. Onom Agemo and the Disco Jumpers have been playing together for years, and it shows. Taking Schleiermacher's compositions, the group ehearse the songs andplay them live to finalize the arrangement before recording the tracks to different 4-track tape machines, mostly at drummer Bernd Oezsevim's rehearsal space. Take the track - Cool Runnings' for example: locked in the groove, the intertwined saxand synth melody moves up and down the Anichihoye scale. Not to be confusedwith the comedy of the same title, the track is named after a bar in Berlin Friedrichshain, where friends of the band put on their night Tropical Timewarp. This interlocking of groove and melody is a signature element, and also inspired the title of the album. Cranes and Carpets alludes to changing patterns, and howthe parts of a wider whole can work together in synchronicity. Combine an almost telepathic group intuition with the fact that Schleiermacher also engineered and produced the record, and the pieces start to add up to why the Disco Jumpers sound like they do.It's an authentic mix of North African rhythms and modes, live jazz musicianship and analogue synths that's reminiscent of electronic African pioneers like William Onyeabor and Manu Dibango as much as modern ensembles like The Heliocentrics. While the album sounds like it could have been discovered on a dusty old tape down a Marrakesh marketplace, it has a modern twist in the neat craftsmanship and tight arrangements that ensures a blend of styles that couldn't be anyone else.

One Sixth & The Public Opinion Six - Cosmetic Love/jappo

It's been a long time between drinks for Melbourne's mighty Afrobeat juggernaut The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra (The POAO). To get everyone warmed up for next year's much anticipated LP release, two of the group's vocalists, rapper 1/6 and singer / percussionist Lamine Sonko are fronting alternate sides of a split 7" out on HopeStreet Recordings. A highly nutritious Afro freaky snack to keep enthusiasts of all things raw and righteous satisfied till the main course arrives.

The A Side, "Cosmetic Love," is a rumination on the nature of relationships by one of Australia's leading rap lyricists 1/6. The track's life began as a jam session that went to tape in the early days of the Hope Street studio, based on an idea by PutBacks guitarist Tom Martin. The session lay unused for years till 1/6 came across it and threw down these inspired rap verses. Public Opinion producer and musical director Tristan Ludowyk laid in some organ, additional percussion and brass and suddenly "Cosmetic Love" wasn't just a song, it was an A-side. An A-side born of happy accident.

On the B side: The Public Opinion Six, formerly The Afrobiotics. The rhythm section behind the POAO, start with the same idea and re-imagine it, creating a whole new song. With lyrics wfritten and performed by Lamine Sonko, "Jappo," in the Senegalese language of Wolof means "unite". Behind Lamine's straight-out-of-Dakar vocal stylings, The Public Opinion Six bring a heavy 1970s Lagos influenced groove, creating a pumping Pan African melange - sure to get motors running everywhere, from West Africa to worldwide.

Between them, Namibian Australian 1/6 (aka Aaron Stephanus) and Senegal born and raised Lamine represent the cream of African Australian vocalists and songwriters. 1/6 has won numerous plaudits in his decade long rap career, from the Hilltop Hoods award in 2010 to a critically acclaimed solo album Electronic Mail released by Pang Productions in 2012. Lamine grew up in Dakar in a lauded family of the griot tradition and is has followed been training in traditional Sabar music and dance forms since childhood. Now the unofficial Southern hemisphere ambassador of the Sonko clan, he brings a fresh angle on Afrobeat direct from Dakar to Melbourne. Both 1/6 and Lamine are at the vanguard of the new generation of African music makers and makers of African music in Australia.

"'The percussive, horn laden funk monster unleashed by Nigerian afro-beat inventor Fela Kuti in the 1960's is in good hands with this formidable Melbourne ensemble'" - Michael Dwyer (The Age)

"'Complementing their authentic Afro-beat groove with upfront rapping MCs...the Public Opinion conglomerate creates an irresistible mix'¦an enticing & proudly funky affair.'" - Seth Jordan (ABC Limelight)

"1/6 is an African-Australian who is emerging as one of Aussie hip hops freshest talents." - Jim Steps (All Aussie Hip Hop)

Bar owner, producer, Balearic DJ and sublime record collector Peter Visti returns to the label with his vision for the open-minded dance floor - 'Wanna Dance'. In conjunction with compiler and highlife researcher Dr. Markus Coester, Soundway Records present a very special release. A triple 180g gatefold vinyl (with a bonus 7 inch). This 45 includes the two first ever recordings by a certain Fela Ransome Kuti with his band The Highlife Rakers. Recorded by Melodisc in London in 1960 both tracks have been unearthed after more than fifty years in hiding.
In many ways this compilation is a prequel of sorts to Soundway's groundbreaking Nigeria & Ghana Special compilations, telling the early story of modern highlife's foundation & formulation. It traces the music from West Africa to London, adding elements of jazz, mambo and calypso along the way and paving the way for the afro sounds of the 1970s. The Durian Brothers - Das Macht Modern

There are lots of producers out there who try really hard to do "something else". Then, there are these chosen few artists that effortlessly are "something else" in their own right. Durian Brothers and their magical array of modified turntables, sequencers and machines belong in this selected circle. So this mini album is a quite special and unconventional release, but that doesn't mean it's not dance music - quite the opposite! It just means it's perfect for Kontra-Musik. Labeled DAS MACHT MODERN, one would perhaps expect cold, intellectual sounds reminiscent of steel, glass and silicon, but on the contrary, the soundscape rather lends itself to feverish fantasies about the explorations of ancient cultures and malaria-stricken jungle expeditions. Listen to Oni Baba, for example: You can actually see the shadows from franticly dancing bodies flickering across the torch-lit walls of Angkor Wat. Or take the slow but decidedly sweaty Weggeputscht, in which you can clearly sense this pervading play between sounds and rhythms that stem from crumbling temples, huts and bonfires and the modern, yet analog sounds from altered machines. In fact, this mini album is so soaked in organic movement and compulsive rhythms that it should probably be tried out as a experimental treatment for coma patients. We dare you not to dance!

- First time vinyl reissue of this tremendous 1976 guitar/percussion album.

- From the original multi-track master tapes

- Four panel insert has info on the making of the album as told by Jorge Trasante, lyrics in English and Spanish + amazing session photos by Enrique Abal Oliú.

Under the dark cloud of an early 1970's dictatorship, most musicians fled Uruguay. Not the nation's best, iconoclast Eduardo Mateo. It was during this dark period that Mateo reached his zenith as a composer and arranger, with a help from famous Afro-folk percussionist Jorge Trasante. On this album, Mateo goes deep into sonic explorations of percussion variations and guitar techniques. Mateo's voice also underwent a mutation for the album, which many people thought the result of a deep mental illness, Trasante explains that Mateo used modulations drawn from Arabic music to get into different characters with his voice.' This record is now considered indisputable evidence of Mateo's genius. If Eduardo Mateo was a genius, and that fact no one who has heard his music doubts, then 'Mateo y Trasante' is his masterpiece. There were some who said that Mateo and Trasante were both crazy, that Mateo could not sing. Mateo and Trasante resisted the vile and ruthless criticism of those skeptics: those who resisted the quality and depth of this record. Mateo and Trasante resisted, immovable, as are those who know that history will have its day of judgment. To paraphrase someone who knew music and much more, for the truth and Mateo, I sign my name here. - Daniel Figares.

Our sincere thanks to Enrique Abal Oliú for allowing us to use his amazing photos, and to Daniel Figares for allowing us to translate text from his book Mateo y Trasante: Treinta Años, 1976-2006, which is the source for all of Jorge Trasante's musings on this epochal album, which are included in this reissue.

Wonderful remastered reissue of the impossible to find Afro Disco bomb 'Sex Revoluton' by Max B, originally released back in 1978 on the tiny Spanish label Movieplay and now changing hands for big bucks with collectors. All tracks are great but the real standouts here are the super funky percussion-heavy title track 'Sex Revolution' plus the full-length nine and a half minute LP version of the killer flute-driven Afro groover 'Super Bwana' as well as the incredible and highly sought after Serge Gainsbourg inspired 'Possesion', a sleazy slow burner with sultry French spoken word vocals. Essential.
