die erste Band von Klaus Sperling (Primal Fear, Nitrogods, Sinner) und Michael Moretto (Tyran´Pace) -nur regional veröffentlichte Aufnahmen von 1984 und 1985, erstmals auf CD & LP -qualitativ hochwertiger Heavy Metal mit 100% Achtzigerfeeling -CD/LP mit Liner Notes, Abbildungen und extrem vielen Fotos -Coverartwork von Michaela Widmayer (Manilla Road, Mark Shelton, Trance) Manchmal fällt man vom Glauben ab. Labels wie Noise, Steamhammer, Mausoleum, Earthshaker oder die GAMA Labelgruppe haben in den Achtzigern neben vielen wichtigen und guten Alben auch Durchschnitt oder Schlimmeres veröffentlicht.

Währenddessen blieb eine talentierte und mitreißende Band namens SQUADRON aus dem Raum Stuttgart (bis heute) unentdeckt. Selbst auf Encyclopedia Metallum findet man keinen Eintrag mit den zwei Demos, die man 1984 und 1985 aufgenommen hat. Noch nicht. 1983 wurde die Band gegründet, beeinflusst von Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Warrior, Manowar, Ozzy Osbourne und Dio. Eine der ersten Shows fand im Vorprogramm von Tyrant statt. Schnell bekam man den Ruf einer gigantischen Liveband, zumal man nicht nur auf ausgefeilte Songs achtete, sondern auch auf Outfit und Show. Nur wenige Monate später kamen bereits 400 Fans in die Neckerhalle Esslingen, obwohl am gleichen Tag Accept quasi um die Ecke spielten.

Außerdem brach man den Zuschauerrekord in „Die Röhre“ Stuttgart, wo man nach dem zweiten Demo eine große Show auffuhr. Natürlich meldeten sich nun auch größere Labels, doch zu einem Vertrag kam es nicht. Nach einem Festival mit Rage, Veto und Stranger, sowie einigen Shows mit Czakan war 1987 Schluss. Michael Moretto stieg in Folge bei Kymera ein, um den zu Pink Cream 69 abgewanderten Andi Deris zu ersetzen. Klaus Sperling ist bis heute aktiv im Geschäft und seit 2011 bei den Nitrogods. Bekannt wurde er durch sein Drumming bei Primal Fear, Sinner, MP und Freedom Call. Das Material wurde in liebevoller Kleinarbeit restauriert und gemastert und ist nun erstmals auf CD und LP zu hören. Booklet und LP-Inlay enthalten Liner Notes und tonnenweise Fotos und Abbildungen. Diese Band hätte es damals weit bringen können…

Das sechste Studioalbum der schottischen Band Franz Ferdinand!

In The Human Fear geht es um das Menschsein und die Ängste, die uns dazu machen, aber man hätte es auch kühn nennen können. Kühn auf eine Art, wie wir es gerne sind. Es ist ihr sechstes Album, das sie mit dem Produzenten Mark Ralph hauptsächlich in Schottland aufgenommen haben, mit ein paar Overdubs in London und Paris. Bob Hardy und Alex Kapranos gründeten die Band 2002, Julian Corrie und Dino Bardot kamen 2016 dazu und Audrey Tait 2021. Dies ist die erste vollständige LP mit Dino und Audrey, obwohl sie auf den letzten Singles mitgewirkt haben und mit der Band ausgiebig getourt sind. Unsere Ängste definieren unsere Menschlichkeit. Wir finden unseren Charakter und unsere Persönlichkeit, wenn wir unsere Reaktion auf sie verstehen. Was sie auslöst. Es ist nicht unbedingt die Angst selbst, die uns menschlich macht, sondern das, was wir mit ihr machen oder was wir zulassen, dass sie mit uns macht. Was wir nicht wählen können und was wir können. Unsere Ängste sagen uns, wie wir menschlich sind. Jeder Song hängt an einer anderen Angst. Es geht darum, in den Abgrund zu blicken und dann zu sagen:
"Scheiß drauf... ich kann genauso gut noch einen trinken, bevor ich hineinfalle." Es gibt klangliche Überraschungen und verschiedene Perspektiven auf dem Album, aber wenn man die Band kennt, weiß man, dass sie es gemacht hat. Die es genossen haben, es zu machen. OK, einige der Themen können ein wenig düsterer werden, aber es gab Licht und Freude beim Zusammenstellen.
Das Album beginnt mit dem Track "Audacious" der als Vorabsingle den Ton für das Album angibt. Die zweite Single, die im November erscheinen wird, ist "Night Or Da"y, die sowohl in den Texten als auch in der Musik die Spannung zwischen Angst und Spaß darstellt. Das klangvolle Synthie-Stück "Hooked" zeigt eine andere Seite des Albums und wird unser Fokus-Track bei der Veröffentlichung sein. Das Album wird Mitte September zusammen mit einer Reihe von Live-Terminen in Großbritannien und Europa angekündigt und am 10. Januar 2025 veröffentlicht. Die Band wird außerdem im Oktober und November für Live-Shows nach Mexiko und Südamerika reisen.

"One Grass Skirt To London" ist eine Reise über 8.200 Kilometer, von Malawi nach London, wohin Malia als Jugendliche auswanderte. Eine nusikalische, geografi sche als auch zeitliche Reise. Doch vor allem ist es eine sentimentale Reise, da die 14 sorgfältig ausgewählten Songs auf diesem Album von einem unschätzbaren persönlichen Wert sind. Fast alle Cover stammen aus Filmsoundtracks, von "Everybody's Talkin' " aus "Midnight Cowboy" bis "Take My Breath Away" aus "Top Gun", von "Pure Imagination" aus "Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik" bis "Here on My Own" aus "Fame". Jeder dieser Songs hat die einzigartige Fähigkeit, durch die Musik und die von ihm hervorgerufenen Bilder, eine Emotion wiederherzustellen, die Malias eigene Identität geprägt hat. Malia gelingt es, einige der schönsten Themen der Filmgeschichte neu zu interpretieren und dieses Album zu dem wohl persönlichsten ihrer Diskographie zu machen.

Brought to life in 1976 on his small imprint Stars, In Dub is one of the most sought after Tappa Zukie album. Alongside Man Ah Warrior it is a mandatory purchase for any reggae lover more akin to the spacey reverberation of the studio facilities. With his deep, rumbling bass and the prodigious engineering of King Tubby (the album was cut at his own studio) the record still maintains his adventurous tenure. This crucial re-issue present the complete original tracklist with the addictions of two extra tracks. Dig deep into the ark-eology of dub side.

Presenting the first vinyl release of mauna prasāda featuring its owner Delazar. mauna (मौन) refers to “silence” and prasāda (प्रसाद) refers to “essence” or "grace". So it's the essence of silence or the grace of silence.

Jorge Ben is surely one of the world’s greatest all-round musical artists. He is internationally renowned and vastly influential as a vocalist, musician, performer and phenomenal songwriter. Famed for penning ‘Taj Mahal’, which was the source for Rod Stewart’s ‘Do You Think I’m Sexy?’, and also ‘Mas Que Nada’, one of Brazil’s most iconic anthems, Jorge Ben is a powerful musical force. A simple glance at his impressive back catalogue reveals a master of his craft, with a depth and quality that is seldom paralleled.

For 'Tudo Ben' we take a side-step, focusing on Jorge Ben’s songs that have been performed by other artists. Complied by Mr Bongo, Greg Caz and Sean Marquand, this collection features the Brazilian legends Elza Soares, Claudette Soares, and Wilson Simonal, alongside prodigious artists such as Marijô, Os Brazoes, and Doris Monteiro to name but a few. The selection covers a wide range of genres including samba, bossa nova, MPB and batacuda workouts. Many of the songs featured have become staples in Mr Bongo DJ sets over the years and are some of our most loved classics. As with many of history’s great songwriters, Jorge Ben’s songs transcend genres and styles, they can be covered and reinterpreted, yet the quality of the writing holds up to the standard of the original.

In the dark days of the mid to late 2000s when the end of vinyl seemed inevitable, Mr Bongo released 'Tudo Ben' on CD only. Years later, we finally get to put this right and present it for the first time on vinyl with alternative artwork by Mr Krum.

This album is a gritty yet sophisticated journey through life’s harsh realities and ultimate triumphs. Hailing from two vastly different worlds, Fashawn and Little Vic bring unique stories and sounds that blend the raw with the refined. Fashawn, raised amidst the gangs and struggles of Fresno, California, brings an unapologetic realism to his verses, detailing the roads that took him from survival to success. The theme of the album is like a fine dining experience—a nod to elegance—while peeling back the layers to reveal the raw, often darker realities simmering behind the scenes. Little Vic’s production flexes between hard-hitting rhythms and delicate, soulful sounds, creating a soundscape that mirrors the rags-to-riches journey both artists represent.

Brought together on the East Coast by executive producer Ricky Grey, Fashawn and Little Vic spent an intense week creating this project, crafting a work that feels as alive and textured as the streets that shaped them. Releasing now for well over a decade - Neue Grafik: known to friends as Fred, has successfully transplanted from Parisian rookie to one- man London Institution. Beginning as a solo producer and DJ,Fred spread his wings upon relocating to South London - at first with his Neue Grafik Ensemble and later with his now iconic twice-weekly Orii Jam - the latter of which has given agency to an entire new generation of musicians; spawning an aesthetic, nurturing a unique sound and becoming a launchpad for countless artists.

Dalston Tape Volume 1 is Fred’s attempt to fall back in love with beatmaking - taking it back to the roots of
where the project began. I say “attempt” because he’s simply learnt too much and made too many friends
along the way to make a mere DIY beat tape. Since his early MPC-led productions on Parisian label, Beat
X Changers, Fred has learnt to play the keys to a concert hall standard, he has become proficient in double bass and built up a dense network of collaborators who he has composed, recorded, engineered and produced for both at home in SE London and in the iconic Total Refreshment Centre Studios in Dalston.

This experience adds unavoidable dimensions to his toolbox - resulting in something more akin to a miniature-magnum-opus than a simple beat-tape.

Yes, we hear the influences of Pete Rock, Mad Lib, J Dilla and Al Dobson Jr but we also hear the musicality of D’Aneglo, James Blake and live contributions from an ever growing army of young graduates of the Orii School.

He sent me a spontaneous, fun, brave and bold record which is his new album - one that curiously smelled of mechanical grease - machinery of the soul, broken transport rhythms, samples like memories, noise at peace. Referenced yet uncoded. I don’t believe in ulterior motives and complex explanations. Not here at least. Mixtacy, a new independent label based in Tokyo, was launched in 2024 by DJs, for DJs, and of DJs. Their passion lies in updating the classic house style with modern underground artists. The first EP features four exclusive tracks by mysterious Japanese underground artists, available only on vinyl. All tracks are mastered by the Romanian talent, Dragutesku. A1 Addictive Desire by YAMADAtheGIANT, whose debut 12inch vinyl sold out 200 copies in just two months in Japan. This raw acid deep house track made by hardware synths, sequencers, and sampled vocals from the cult NY house track The Playground/Desire (1992). A2; Nightfall Yearnings by P.S. Morris, a 20 years experienced master of MPC from rural Japan. This classic-style deep house tune boasts a phat groove focused for the dance floor. B1; Forest is by Bitowa, originally from the Japanese hip-hop underground, now coming into the techno field from Okinawa, southwest Japan. This modern tech house track features acapellas sampled from garage classics and disco, resulting in a unique texture. B2; Lost Sweet Cherry is made from cut-ups of Japanese porno analog tapes by the owner of strange vinyl shop Tonotopica in Asahikawa, northeast Japan. This dub sets a psychedelic atmosphere as the night starts.

"Bora Rokovic's MPS album, Ultra Native, is one of the most elusive titles in the catalogue and, until now, remained unissued since its original release in 1971. Inzalaco's 'J.B.W.' is a hard-grooving fusion piece with dark minor chords, opening with an almighty drum break – found here in a new all-analogue mastertape edit for this 45 release. 'Soft Hands Had the Rain' features Trunk strutting his stuff on Fender bass, as well as cello overdubs, with Rokovic's brooding improvisations on electric keys."

Claudia’s 'Deixa Eu Dizer' is an absolute must have Brazilian record. A timeless voice that lifts this beautiful MPB track to stratospheric heights. As sampled by Marcelo D2 on one of our favourite Brazilian hip hop records 'Desafabo', the track features on Claudia’s stunning album of the same name and had never been released on 7"" until this point.

On the flip, a sun dappled, heartfelt and hard to come by track from Cizinha. Originally released on Rozenblit in 1968, it had been, and more importantly still is, a firm favourite of ours. Shimmering horns, deft flutes and a tight percussion section providing the perfect basis to this sweet samba groove."

Summer of 2023: Koralle wants to escape the heat of Bologna for a few weeks. He is heading south and rents a small hut by the sea near Ravenna. One night he meets Francesco Giampaoli, a seasoned jazz & world musician at a bar on Bassona beach. The two had worked on music before and Koralle visits Francesco the next day at his studio which is stuffed with analogue gear and instruments. He stops by every single day for the next weeks and the duo creates some incredible strange music.
As a special treat, they’ve invited a talented lineup of artists, including Twit One, The Offline, Slim, Mr.Käfer, Midan, Opek, and Darius Heid, to offer unique reinterpretations of their tracks.

High Hopes is 17 songs across 40 minutes on one slice of wax that, as advertised, sounds nothing like last month’s Ep, High Dreams. Here, rather than the long form dance form, is a continuation of the beat tape pacing from the last album, a collection of moments posing as ideas posing as a narrative stuffed with oddities and surprises that reward the close listen.
What’s heard on High Hopes is the Mole’s exploration of a love letter, from one person to a family, from the northern Pacific to the southern Atlantic, from a boy to a painted bird. Vancouver Island to Manantiales. The songs range from ambient sound bath and hip hop sludge, up to micro boogie and almost House before tumbling back down and forth again. Bubbling synths, MPCs swung out, samples chopped and chewed, bass and violins from Rick and Sophie, field recordings of birds and frogs and beaches, friends and family and fiestas. Did we mention the love ?! This album has got it all! Original collages from Antonio Carrau envelope this wax: jacket, sleeve and cookie. Antonio’s work is typified by playful combinations and bold statements about living in a embrace of analog and digital health. His co lages marry the corporeal world with an updated, digitalized age of reproduction, inducing feelings of gratitude for the simple everyday scenes we sometimes lose touch with when we forget to slow down. Good living, like breathing, requires inhaling as well as exhaling.
We can’t always produce content, make art, we must also pause, and listen. And enjoy. The Mole is joined by friends and colleagues on several songs included on High Hopes. Rick May plays bass on both Que Rico and album stand out GoinF4er. Working with these incredible talents not only enriched this album, but fulfilled a long standing goal of the Mole’s; to work again with the musicians from whom he learned so much. His sound remains unique, fresh and deep: enjoying plays in a wide variety of spaces and places.
High Hopes is the Mole’s 5th solo album and his 2nd album for Circus Company (The River Widens) who have also proudly released two eps of Mole magic (Little Sunshine, High Dreams).

It's been over 25 years since The Missing Years was released to the world and we've decided that you folks deserve a new song and some sleek new packaging for this classic, Grammy award winning album! The Missing Years LP is now available with the previously unreleased track "The Third of July" and a great selection of pictures from John's time on the road, photo shoots and handwritten lyrics all from The Missing Years. This double LP record was pressed on 180 gram vinyl and includes liner notes and an MP3 download card.

Central European Techno Succession

Amp Fiddler was one of Detroit's most prominent musicians of the past 40+ years, widely known as a longtime member of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic touring outfit, a collaborator with luminaries like Prince, Raphael Saadiq and J Dilla, and was a co-writer and performer on classic singles such as Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose” and Maxwell’s “Til The Cops Come Knockin.”

Amp was well known for teaching a young J Dilla to play the Akai MPC drum machine, as well as effectively catapulting him towards a successful career by introducing him to Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest in 1994 on the Lollapalooza tour.

Amp Fiddler passed away in December 2023, shocking the music world and receiving published obituaries in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, as well as nationally-televised recognition at the Grammy Awards and BET Awards.

Detroit City Council declared May 16 as Amp Fiddler Day in the city of Detroit, planned as a yearly event, as defined by the Detroit Free Press as "a “collective acknowledgment” by the Detroit community of his impact and legacy."

Will Sessions are a mainstay on the Detroit music scene, having released masterful full-length projects in vastly different styles, from the faithful hip hop recreations of “The Elmatic Instrumentals,” the futuristic jazz of 2022’s “Electromagnetic Reality,” and the deep 70’s funk of 2017’s “Deluxe.”

Dames Brown is a Detroit-based vocal trio who have a forthcoming full-length LP ”As I Am” on dance-music powerhouse Defected Records, as well as a self-titled EP on Sessions Sounds dropping in 2025.

Pique is the sensational debut solo album from Dora Morelenbaum, one of the key talents spearheading Brazil’s new musical wave. A member of the Latin Grammy award-winning band, Bala Desejo, Dora showcases a new side to her solo productions on this special LP. Maceió, the capital of Brazil’s Alagoas state on its sprawling east-coast, is home to pastel coloured colonial houses, white sand beaches and a brilliant young composer, poet and multi-instrumentalist named Bruno Berle.

With a voice of pure gold and a startling sensitivity for heartfelt pop songwriting, on No Reino Dos Afetos (In the Realm of Affections), Berle firmly embraces earnestness, through starry-eyed Brazilian love songs, ambient vignettes, warm, home-cooked beats and gentle strokes of MPB genius.

“It’s an album that was built from my desire to find beauty”, Berle explains - his simple, graceful words mirroring the graceful simplicity in his music. But amongst the simplicity, the compositions, arrangements and productions on No Reino Dos Afetos tingle with nuance and detail.

On the contemporary R&B inspired lead single “Quero Dizer” - produced by Berle and longtime friend and collaborator Batata Boy - the swirling, lo-fi, kalimba and guitar-fronted beat is turned into a feel-good hit by the ingenuity of Berle’s honey-soaked vocal melody.

Powerfully intimate, “O Nome Do Meu Amor” (My Love’s Name) is a guaranteed tearjerker, with Berle’s stunning voice soaring over gently plucked acoustic guitar and the textural flutter of soft movement, as if we hear him writing the song in the moment.

Drawing upon a close-knit, collaborative scene of Maceió artists and musicians, (of which Berle and Batata Boy are vital members), Berle also recorded some of his friends songs on the album, including João Menezes’ “Até Meu Violao”, the album’s beautifully laid back sunshine soul opener, which has all the charm of early-70s João Donato.

Having cut his teeth in soft-rock group Troco em Bala, and more recently finding himself embedded in both Rio and Sao Paulo’s contemporary music scenes - collaborating with the likes of Ana Frango Eletrico, who took the photo for the album cover - No Reino Dos Afetos is as musically diverse as Bruno himself. It’s hazy indie rock (“É Preciso Ter Amor”), calming ambient and field recording (“Virginia Talk”) as well as Berle’s own take on West African High Life (“Som Nyame”).

Instantly recognisable as a truly special artist, Berle’s character fills every corner of the sound, which is unsurprising considering he played most of the instruments.

Long time friends and Lisbon-based Mirror People & OITO//OITO for the last 20 years have been lighting up dancefloors all over their native Portugal and beyond, with their passion for eclectic sounds as the main fuel for their sonic mission. ‘MP88’ marks their first EP together. ‘Howard’ opens with rugged 4/4 rhythms, acid squelches and meandering arps to set the tone, ‘New Ears’, takes things on saturated drums & fills, vintage stab sequences and enigmatic strings. Last but not least, is the dropped tempo acidic feel ‘Alive & Kicking’. Another flawless EP in OITO//OITO Discos, limited to 300 copies, this time in Yellow vinyl.

Having spent their formative years in São Paulo Brazil, as a teenager, Lau Ro found themself uprooted from their home. Moving with their family to Europe in search of a better quality of life, their story was like that of many immigrants in the same position. Lau Ro's parents found work in factories and cleaning jobs, for the first few years in the North of Italy and then in Brighton on England's Southern coast. "We never managed to visit back home, so my connection to Brazil became largely made up of childhood memories and my fascination with all the 60s and 70s music I could find from there."

In Brighton, the young non-binary singer and composer would immerse themself amongst the city's vanguard of free-thinking artists and musicians. Lau Ro formed Wax Machine whose prefigurative, psychedelic community provided a glimmer of countercultural hope amid a backdrop of national political decline. From 2020-23, Wax Machine birthed three cult-favourite albums in as many years; indebted in part to their British psychedelic forebears from progressive folk, rock and jazz yore. But the kernel of Lau's Brazilian sound was already beginning to blossom across Wax Machine's releases. Now, taking root deeper still, Lau Ro steps forward with their debut album: Cabana.

Named after the small wood cabin at the bottom of their garden where the album was recorded, Cabana is a deeply personal record of memory, self-discovery and imagination. Melancholy and hope combine across ten tracks of dreamy bossa, ambient folk, fuzzy tropicalia and majestic MPB. The music is swathed in masterful string arrangements and trippy electronics in equal part, while Lau Ro's delicate, yet quietly confident voice takes acerbic aim (in both English and Portuguese) at polluted city life, while dreaming of a utopia, rich with nature and wildlife.

Like the musical equivalent of semantic drift, Lau Ro's displacement led to the creation of another Brazil. A mythic place in Lau's soul, as they put it, "where the sunshine and joy of my childhood remained untapped." Lau continues: "It's music that might sound as if it came out of a parallel universe Brazil, rather than its modern day landscape. I am nowadays rediscovering Brazil, going back as often as I can and trying to stay connected to these different parts of the world and myself."

''One Foot in the Rave'' is a vibrant collection that showcases Jonny's signature style--a blend of melodic, melancholic acid jams, bleepy funk, and warm analog electronics. Whether for the stereo or the sound system, the LP moves from the upfront bounce of ''The Apocalypse is Now'' and ''Raymond Tuesday's Big Day Out'' to the shimmering reverb of ''Starry Night'' and the birdsong-infused ''Ringfort.'' Listeners will find themselves in familiar Automatic Tasty terrain, rich with psychedelic exploration. According to Jonny, ''What to say about this record? I don't really know and it hardly matters. I wrote them on different bits of gear; ye olde faithful Roland SH101, my MC202 (pencil and paper de rigeur), a battered x0xb0x 1.0 (thx Daniel!), a beloved Yamaha Cs-5, a similarly beloved Roland SH5, a truly hammered Juno106, a Roland JX3P, a Nord something or other, an MPC2500, my TR606, and a Vermona DRM1 MKII being sequenced via a bedraggled TR626. Also Jay's TR808 is on there (thx Jay!) and a TR8 being squashed through a Mutronics Mutator (wheee Damo!) and a Zoom H4n recorder. I edited them on a dilapidated laptop, with no headphones or monitors, steering by the tiny speakers on the computer and playing them in my car, twiddling the mix as I went. Das neue Album des Russudan Meipariani Ensembles ist eine musikalische Besinnung auf Herkunft und Heimat, eine Musik über Sehnsucht und Erinnerung. The Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra was created in 1971 by French free jazz pianist legend, François Tusques. Free Jazz, was also the name of the 1965 recording Tusques made along with and other Michel Portal, François Jeanneau, Bernard Vitet, Beb Guérin and Charles Saudrais. Six years later, in 1971 Tusques would go ahead of free jazz.

Wondering if free jazz wasn’t a bit of a dead end together with Barney Wilen (Le Nouveau Jazz) or even solo (Piano Dazibao and Dazibao N°2), Tusques formed the Inter Communal Free Dance Music Orchestra, an association under the banner of which the different communities of the country would come together and compose, quite simply. If at first the structure was made up of professional musicians from the jazz scene it would rapidly seek out talent in the lively world of the MPF (Musique Populaire Française).French Popular Music, ndlt

As with L’Inter Communal a few years earlier, Le Musichien follows on from the group of varying musicians that Tusques had conceived as a “people’s jazz workshop”. In 1981, at the famous Paris address, 28 rue Dunois, the pianist sang with his partner Carlos Andreu “Le Musichien”, an Afro-Catalan tale over an exceptional bass line from Jean-Jacques Avenel backed by percussion from Kilikus, saxophones from Sylvain Kassap and Yebga Likoba and trombone from Ramadolf which presented a myriad of constellations. The sky has no limits, let’s make the most of it.

“Les Amis d’Afrique” is recorded the following year, at the ‘Tombées de la Nuit’ festival in Rennes, bassist Tanguy Le Doré would weave with Tusques the fabric on which would evolve an explosive “brotherhood of breath”: Bernard Vitet on trumpet, Danièle Dumas and Sylvain Kassap on saxophones, Jean-Louis Le Vallegant and Philippe Le Strat on... bombards. With hints of modal jazz inspired by Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders, the Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra is an ecumenical project which speaks to the whole world.

Brian Jackson dives into the world of Alfonso Lovo

Legendary musician Brian Jackson, known for his pioneering work in neo-soul and modern hip hop, has lent his extraordinary talents to retouch two tracks from Alfonso Lovo's remarkable album "Terremoto Richter 6:25 Managua.”

As one-half of the influential duo Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, Brian began his career at an early age, having recorded nine albums by his 27th birthday. He is widely celebrated as a musical innovator, with New Yorker Magazine recently hailing him as “a musical pioneer” in a 2022 article.

Alfonso Noel Lovo, moved by the devastating earthquake that struck Managua on December 23, 1972, recorded his first album in New Orleans the following year. "Terremoto Richter 6:25 Managua" stands as a testament to resilience and artistic fusion, featuring a stunning blend of psychedelic rock, mazurka, jazz, Louisiana blues, and African folk.

“Deus É Mulher” was recorded between the Red Bull studios (São Paulo) and Tambor (Rio de Janeiro), produced by Guilherme Kastrup and co-produced by Romulo Fróes, Marcelo Cabral (bass and bass synth), Rodrigo Campos (cavaquinho and guitar), and Kiko Dinucci (guitar, synthesizer, and sampler). Reinforcing the album's feminine energy, the recordings featured Mariá Portugal (drums, percussion, and MPC) and Maria Beraldo (clarinet and clarone).

The album contains 11 new tracks, written by names such as Tulipa Ruiz, Pedro Luís, Alice Coutinho, and Rodrigo Campos, among others. After recent explorations into ambient and pop under his full name, Sacha Renkas switches back to his Antenna moniker for ALT013. The Kiev-born, longtime Rotterdam-based artist uses a rough-around-the-edges, hiss-laden palette to construct his intricate, pensive club tracks. Often recording on the fly, he embraces the limitations and quirks of the hardware he works with, curating the happy accidents that come with them and that help make his music feel as alive as it does. It is emotional and imaginative in spirit, yet raw, almost instinctive in its rendering. Renkas cites the new wave and synth-pop from his youth and the sounds coming from Chicago and Detroit, as well as the Dutch West Coast he encountered later on, as inspirations. The sensitivity and hands-on approach associated with these are also tenets throughout his work. The ''Another Wave EP,'' a selection of tracks created over nearly a decade, further substantiates this approach. Made on multiple MPCs, Juno synthesizers, and an Akai S900, and mixed on a Mackie 16-channel mixer, it blends, among others, elements of first-wave techno and European proto-trance. Opener ''Alisa'' stacks angular sine melodies and formant basslines one upon another yet flows like silk, its balance immaculately kept in check. On ''Everyone M1,'' the bass organ patch from which the track derives its title finds itself amidst a lo-fi flux of capricious arpeggiators, ethereal pads, and decocted drums. ''Another Wave'' is a carefully sculpted slow burner, collected in its unfolding. Text: Hayden Thorpe hat sein drittes Soloalbum für den 27.September angekündigt. "Ness" ist inspiriert von Orford Ness in Suffolk, einem ehemaligen Militärstandort für die Entwicklung von Waffen während beider Weltkriege und des Kalten Krieges. Das 1993 vom National Trust erworbene und der Verwilderung überlassene Gebiet ist bis heute ein Ort des Paradoxen, des Geheimnisses und der ständigen Entwicklung. Thorpe's "Ness" ist eine Ode an Orford Ness, an den physischen Ort und an das Buch, das ihn inspiriert hat. Mit Wort und Bild haben der britische Bestseller-Autor Robert Macfarlane und Stanley Donwood darin einen kleinen modernen Mythos geschaffen. Teils Novelle, teils Prosagedicht, teils Mysterienspiel - in "Ness" vereinen sich ihre Fähigkeiten zu einer verblüffenden, beunruhigenden Wirkung und Thorpe erweckt die Lieder darin zum Leben. "Im Schwarzwald" ("Hamburg Spinners in the Black Forest") is the third album by the mod-jazz quartet Hamburg Spinners. The Hamburg Spinners are Carsten Meyer on organ, Dennis Rux on guitar, David Nesselhauf on bass and Lucas Kochbeck on drums.

"Im Schwarzwald" was recorded live in January 2024 at the legendary MPS studios in Villingen-Schwenningen to capture the band's sound 1:1, with only a few shouts and handclaps added afterwards. The songs offer the tried and tested swinging mix of soul, R&B and mod jazz. Meyer's soulful organ sound, reminiscent of Booker T. Jones, Ingfried Hoffmann and Georgie Fame, is carried by Rux's warm and gripping guitar sound, Nesselhauf's dynamic bass playing and Kochbeck's precise and tight drumming.

Like any good album this is one that grows on you with each listen. Richard Dorfmeister (Kruder & Dorfmeister) described The 5th Exotic as one of the best beats albums I have heard . Overall, The 5th Exotic is a truly accomplished debut album with a sound and style that is truly original.

Repress of Still House Plants’ second LP FAST EDIT on frosted clear vinyl with microtene inners. Cultivated over the course of 2019, the album switches the combativeness of previous releases for bare intimacy. FAST EDIT is a palette of qualities and curdled headspaces. Now living far apart and coming together only for intense periods of shows and touring, the band have come to rely on an archive of mp3s (quick recall overtakes stable long-term memory). Written on mobile phones, dictaphones, and laptops, FAST EDIT cuts rehearsals and schemas with tight, raucous tracks. This is most tenderly at play on ‘Shy Song’ – a cut'n’chase piece, in which all sounds are ghosts of another. ‘PredikateD’ is a phone on the ground: the voice is air, the guitar and drums meld with the plywood and sand-bag structure, the seams exposed.

Two 1980s Brazilian boogie bombs from Sandra de Sá and Equipe Rádio Cidade get a remastered reissue as part of Mr Bongo Brazil 45’s series.

Sandra de Sá’s ‘Olhos Coloridos’ is an ‘80s MPB/boogie jam, taken from her self-titled 1982 LP on RGE Brazil, that sits perfectly alongside the likes of Tim Maia, Marcos Valle, Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti. No surprise then that Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge feature on the track, backed by some of the members from Banda Black Rio. A joyous combination of funk basslines and dreamy Rhodes that marry with jubilant horns and Sá’s incredible vocal tones.

On the B side, Equipe Rádio Cidade ‘Bons Tempo Sao Paulo (Good Times)’ was originally released on a rare promo only 7 inch from 1980. Giving a Brazilian boogie makeover to Good Times by Chic / Rapper’s Delight by Sugarhill Gang, the track is voiced by radio DJs from Sao Paulo wishing their listeners a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

This replayed version, heavy on the clavinet with a samba-infused, cuica-laced percussion breakdown, gives a true Brazilian spin on one of the most distinctive melodies out there.

’Xica Da Silva’ is one of Jorge Ben’s most well-known and well-loved cuts, housed on the legendary Africa Brazil LP that deserves a place in every collection. A magical MPB cut, it instantly transports you to the shores of Rio de Janeiro. With a low-slung funky samba flavour, Ben’s absorbing vocal recounts the legend of one of Brazil's oldest black icons.

On the flip side, Miriam Makeba serves up an entrancing, slowed-down, grooved-out version of ‘Xica da Silva’. A highly influential singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist from South Africa, this low and slow interpretation is doused in strutting guitar, off-beat piano stabs and hypnotic drums providing the perfect platform to let Miriam’s vocal shine through.
