"Communion" covers a broad sonic palette, ranging from jazz and hi-tech funk dancefloor beats to minor-chord symphonies, all coming together "As One". A trademark 90s electronica sound shifting between the mind, body and soul, produced and recorded with Kirk's 25 years of studio work experience.

Kevin Foakes (Openmind, DJ Food, Ninja Tune) created all the graphic work. Mastered by Matt Colton at Metropolis Mastering, pressed on 180 gr vinyl and a separate digital version will be available from the usual digital shops. Stay tuned!

Future Beat Alliance - Never Forever (Inc. Afriqua Remix)

R&S welcome electronic composer Matthew Puffett AKA Future Beat Alliance with his killer single ’Never Forever’ a sublime slice of broken beat techno that originally had a limited release on his “Patience and Distance” album in 2009. It now comes backed with a first rate remix courtesy of R&S regular Afriqua.

A veteran of the UK electronic scene originally from Oxford but now located in Berlin, Puffett made his name in the late 90s with a string of sought after releases on Void Records under the aliases Mode-M and Soul Electrik before settling on the Future Beat Alliance handle. Notching up releases with the likes of Delsin, Rush Hour and Versatile as well as with the storied Tresor imprint, both as a DJ and an artist. In 2019 Matt started his new imprint Reward System to self release new creations.

Life long friend from Oxford, Mo’ Wax and Unkle maestro James Lavelle reached out in 2012, which led to a further creative chapter in Puffett`s story that culminated with him co-writing & programming on Unkle’s 5th studio album ’The Road Part 1’ as well as some singular work in film and television. “The moving image plays a key creative motive in my process,” Matthew explains. “Sound & picture married together is such a powerful combination that always inspires me every time to make my own version, 'Never Forever' is one of my many attempts to try and
capture that.”

Taking cues from modern cinema masters like Denis Villeneuve, Panos Cosmatos, Steven Soderberg and Jonathon Glazer and their respective composers, Puffett's widescreen sonic craftsmanship alongside his irresistible rhythmic sense are a key part of what makes Future Beat Alliance music so alluring; "I want my tracks to guide the listener on a exit route far from this world”

Lezat makes its debut on Fill-Lex Records, with its first long, 7 beautiful songs that ride between a mixture of minimalistic progressive krautrock, synth-pop with futuristic melodies full of emotion, and a minimalsynth with many subtle nuances.

Manu Pérez is the only member of Lezat. His involvement with music began at the early age of nine when he bought his first vinyl, the first Soft Cell album. It is the era of New Wave and Technopop and the sounds of synthesizers are deeply embedded in him. In 1990 he forms as a guitarist his first Pop group influenced by the Shoegaze. He goes through several bands until 2009 when he decides to return to the origins and undertake a solo project. He buys analogical synthesizers and begins to compose the ones that will become Lezat's instrumental songs with which he debuts in 2011 in a live show in his hometown, Valencia.

His love for photography and audiovisuals leads him to be on the other side of the stage for some years as a music press photographer, and to accompany some of his songs by timelapse projections of his own production.
Lezat is the name of a mountain in the French Pyrenees.

PROFIT PRISON - DREAMS OF A DARK BUILDING EP

Seattle’s Profit Prison is back with a new 6-track EP.

The solo work of Parker Lautenschlager, previously in local hardcore and black metal bands as well as power electronics acts, was debuted by Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions in 2017 and his first full EP Six Strange Passions was released by Avant! approximately one year ago. Inspired by Franz Kafka as much as Kraftwerk, Profit Prison achieves a cold minimalism that speaks to the nightmarish dystopia in which it was created, even more so in the light of the political events that shook the US and Parker’s very hometown recently.

His new Dreams of a Dark Building continues on the dark path of its predecessor, mixing catchy synth melodies and gloomy atmospheres, all strengthened by 70’s disco-like Hi-NRG electronic beats for the perfect dungeon synth pop outcome.
The opener Cleric sports a riff that could have been written by the evil twin of Gershon Kingsley, A Premonition sounds like Ken Laszlo had joined the dark side. 120 Days is the main single of the EP and it’s just melancholically addictive, In This Hour Of Loss has got synths that would make Moroder proud. We could go on but we bet you got the score by now. If you’re in for the best umbriferous synth music, look no further.

On this record we will present 4 remixes that are as imag- intive, inspirational and clever as the original composition. Tapan, Eva Geist, Khidja & Philipp Otterbach took upon themselves to reconstruct Viktoria’s ideas in very surpris- ing, intriguing and “out of the box” ways.

Johnny GRIFFITH - The Geneva Connection

An extremely rare album left by Detroit-based jazz keyboard player Johnny Griffith known for the album "Together, Togetherness" on RCA. An album covering "From The Music Connection" with Freddie Redd Quartet and Jackie McLean. The Music From "The Connection" was composed by jazz pianist Freddie Redd for Jack Gelber's 1959 play The Connection. This first recording of the music was released on the Blue Note label in 1960. It features performances by Redd and Jackie McLean Jack Gelber originally planned for the play to feature improvised music performed by jazz musicians who would also play small roles in the production. Freddie Redd, however, persuaded Gelber to include his original score. Redd re-recorded the score later in 1960 as Music from the Connection.

In 1974 The pianist Johnny Griffith, who was a member of the prestigious Motown rhythm section "Funk Brothers", covered the album "The Connection" by Freddie Red as a whole album, playing electric piano here, which really changes the vibe of the music - and the players are supposedly a host of Motown studio musicians - playing jazz here, but with a nice funky soul undercurrent. Originally released on Detroit Geneva Label.

Pianist Johnny Griffith can be heard on classic Motown sides, as well as on recordings from other Detroit-area labels. Like Motown's other pianists, Joe Hunter and Earl Van Dyke, Griffith's had an extensive musical background.

Signed to Motown's Jazz Workshop label, he recorded the albums "Detroit Jazz" and "The Right Side" of Lefty Edwards. When the march of the Motown hits began, Griffith started playing on sessions for their R&B/Pop acts. But rather than signing a work-for-hire contract with Motown like other musicians, Griffith remained a freelancer, doing other dates and sessions in New York and nearby Chicago.The Motown hits that Griffith played on include: Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)", his celeste trills are heard on "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", adding Wurlitzer electric piano on both Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", organ on the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love and organ and shotgun effects on Junior Walker and the All Stars' "Shotgun.

Griffith's non-Motown hits are with Edwin Starr, Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites, and Young-Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut" In the '90s, Griffith was still active on the Detroit club scene.

Susan Alcorn - The Heart Sutra (Arranged by Janel Leppin)

Legendary pedal steel player Susan Alcorn presents her music as curated and arranged by cellist and composer Janel Leppin. This recording is from a live performance from her residency at Issue Project Room in July 2012. Leppin’s arrangements and curation emotes the brilliance, transparency and resonance of the pedal steel guitar. Through this ensemble, the mastery of Susan Alcorn's compositions shine.

Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country music. Having first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands, she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of 20th century classical music, visionary jazz, and world musics. Struck by the music of Messiaen she began transcribing classical music from recordings and scores on her instrument. Soon, she began to combine the techniques of country-western pedal steel with her own extended techniques to form a personal style influenced by free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, Indigenous traditions, and various folk musics of the world. By the early 1990s her music began to show an influence of the holistic and feminist “deep listening” philosophies of Pauline Oliveros. As her records gained a cult following she moved to Baltimore, MD. She performs internationally and is a key figure in the free improv scene in the US.

Janel Leppin is a core member of the Washington, D.C. experimental, jazz, punk and improvisational scenes and is a celebrated visual artist as a weaver. DownBeat Magazine describes her as “An absolute virtuoso”, NPR Music says “instrumental intimacy swept up in arrangements that cluster around her voice, as delicate and as imposing as a sheet of falling ice.”. Janel leads and writes for her free jazz sextet, Ensemble Volcanic Ash “a rarity..ahhh-vant garde at it’s finest." -Capital Bop. Leppin and Alcorn also recorded the composition “Thick Tarragon” by Eyvind Kang from the album Visible Breath on Ideologic Organ. Leppin appears as a string arranger on many recordings on labels from Dischord Records to Sacred Bones.

Francisco Meirino - A New Instability

In 2019, the power-acoustic musician Francisco Meirino presented A New Instability a commission for the venerable Ina-GRM in paris. Of course, this institution is the pre-eminent center for the research and study of electro-acoustic music dating back to founding of Groupe de Recherches Musicales in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer. To this day, Ina-GRM continues to be at the vangarde of the electro-acoustic composition, and it is quite an accomplishment and very appropriate for Meirino to receive such a commission.

This recording for A New Instability condenses the 32-channel original piece down to a still very active stereo version. here, Meirino continues to amplify and refine his compositions that walk a fine tightrope between raw expressivity of brutalist noise and conceptual rigor of more academic pursuits. Such a work ranks him in with the likes of Zbigniew Karkowski, Dave Phillips, Puce Mary, and Illusion Of Safety.

Field recordings from a kendo dojo in his hometown of Lausanne, Switzerland cast a pugilistic, combative arch to these recordings which snap, burst, explode, and erupt with utterances of men and women engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Searing frequencies build, swarm, and amass out of these episodes rise to psychologically tense crescendo that rupture at their heights, quickly turning attention towards a violence that originates from within. It is as if the objective observations of those martial arts recordings are sublimated within a subjective experience of psychic unease, disquiet, and imbalance.

A New Instability is another magnificent chapter in the ongoing body of work for this accomplished composer of electro-acoustic noise.

Apulati Bien is back on Promesses with an 8 track EP called ‘RER TRACKS’. All sketches of these songs were formerly composed in early 2017 during Apulati's RER journeys (Paris suburban train) on an iPhone 4 using field recordings from the phone and the iMPC app. Then put together and re-arranged some years later in his Brussels studio. Each song is like the soundtrack of a different train journey, bringing eclectic vibes between de-construct dancehall, mutant dub and dark ambient. "OUEST" and "Oz" contain vocal featurings (also recorded on a phone) from Mexican artist Vica Pacheco and Haitian MC Damoreless Zoekila.

A reflection on modern life glimpsed through theprism of communications technology, ‘u,i’ wasrecorded almost entirely over VOIP (voice over internet protocol) apps like Skype. Using voices
extracted from personal video feeds and instrumental performances (cello, flute, violin, clarinet, organ), these were sent between their
studios in Berlin and Montreal via VOIP and rerecorded whilst playing with bandwidth reduction to colour and accentuate its flaws and distortions.

Fascinated by the way technology materialises memory, and by “the sound of its failure, pushed to its limits and breaking apart,” Johannes and Olivier have been collaborating for 20 years, working on numerous film projects together. Olivier previously worked under the Ensemble alias, in which Johannes participated as mixer, arranger
and co-writer. Ensemble’s 2000 debut (on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label) led to Björk drafting Olivier to remix several tracks and to co-write ‘Desired Constellation’. After two further Ensemble albums on FatCat, Olivier’s own-name debut was released on 130701 in 2017.

Various - Electronic Voyages: Early Moog recordings 1964-1969

In support of their forthcoming Bob Moog documentary Electronic Voyager, Waveshaper Media have produced a compilation LP of Moog recordings from the 1960s. The first compilation of its kind, Electronic Voyages: Early Moog recordings 1964-1969 contains tracks by Robert Arthur Moog, Herbert Deutsch, Joel Chadabe, Lothar and the Hand People, Intersystems, Ruth White, Max Brand, and Paul Earls. All of these tracks, released here on vinyl in an edition of 1000 copies, have been scarcely heard and difficult to track down, with all but three of them previously unreleased on vinyl.

Bypassing the Moog synthesizer’s backseat appearance on key pop recordings by the likes of the Beatles, the Doors, and the Beach Boys, Electronic Voyages aims to highlight the diverse approach of 1960s musicians and composers who adopted the Moog as their primary instrument; these recordings all feature the Moog synthesizer front and centre. Beginning with an “audio letter” (The Abominatron) from Bob Moog to his musician-muse Herbert Deutsch, demonstrating some of the first Moog synthesizer prototype’s capabilities, Electronic Voyages veers from avant-garde and electronic soundscapes, to psychedelic madness and summer-of-love pop. In the 1960s, the Moog synthesizer was a new, groundbreaking instrument, and its use was completely uncharted territory. The pioneering use of the Moog on all of these recordings sounds fresh today - you can sense the wide-eyed exploratory delight unfolding, and the disparate results range from endearingly naive (Lothar and the Hand People, Paul Earls) to downright eerie (Ruth White, Intersystems).

The musicians and composers behind these Electronic Voyages may have been among the first to adopt Moog synthesizers, but the fact that they so readily found within them expressivity, heart, and a means to translate their wondrous sense of discovery, speaks far more to Bob Moog’s visionary invention and enduring legacy.

After contributing a track to 2017's Spacetime Continuum/ Juju & Jordash curated Air Texture V compilation, this four track EP of abstract tech-noise brings the sounds Its Own Infinite Flower refined in the basements & warehouses of the Bay Area's underground music scene to the wider world, whether it's ready or not.
'Drone, Drugs 'n' Dissonance' creeps into life as a thunderstorm of
white noise, out of which a cold-rave pulse somehow metastasizes into something resembling techno, although this is a deformed, uncivilized, unwanted mutation, separated at birth & raised in a toxic wilderness. It builds slowly before turning up in a rage of digital distortion, a black metal dub party held at the edge of a melting glacier. 'Oh, Empire of Roses' is a Dada Phycho Jazz Electro number. Dissonant synth chords snake around each other in a playful ouroboros of manic future funk, never knowing if it's starting or stopping, coming or going. Relentless bass throbs through the track, which almost threatens to bubble into classic acid electro before fizzling out. On side two there is 'Devotion to a Peacock Angel,' an angular breakdance groove for the characters in the bar scene in Star Wars. Electro dub rhythms keep stay grounded as everything else rips apart in all directions over the course of the track. On 'Misfortunes of El Dorado' a soundsystem bangs in the next room, only the deepest bass escaping, shaking reality until it's torn apart in waves of distortion, a classic techno synth string wandering over the top of everything in a full blown Techno Jazz Odyssey.

Beatrice Dillon - Workaround Two

‘Workaround’ is the lucidly playful and ambitious solo debut album by rhythmobsessive musician and DJ, Beatrice Dillon for PAN. It combines her love of UK club music’s syncopated suss and Afro- Caribbean influences with a gamely experimental approach to modern composition and stylistic fusion, using inventive sampling and luminous mixing techniques adapted from modern pop to express fresh ideas about groove-driven music and perpetuate its form with timeless, future-proofed clarity.

Recorded over 2017-2019 between studios in London, Berlin and New York, ‘Workaround’ renders a hypnotic series of polymetric permutations at a fixed 150bpm tempo. Mixing meticulous FM synthesis and harmonics with crisply edited acoustic samples from a wide range of guests including UK Bhangra pioneer Kuljit Bhamra (tabla); Pharoah Sanders Band’s Jonny Lam (pedal steel guitar); techno innovators Laurel Halo (synth/vocal) and Batu (samples); Senegalese Griot Kadialy Kouyaté (Kora), Hemlock’s Untold and new music specialist Lucy Railton (cello); amongst others, Dillon deftly absorbs their distinct instrumental colours and melody into 14 bright and spacious computerised frameworks that suggest immersive, nuanced options for dancers, DJs and domestic play.

‘Workaround’ evolves Dillon’s notions in a coolly unfolding manner that speaks directly to the album’s literary and visual inspirations, ranging from James P. Carse’s book ‘Finite And Infinite Games’ to the abstract drawings of Tomma Abts or Jorinde Voigt as well as painter Bridget Riley’s essays on grids and colour. Operating inside this rooted but mutable theoretical wireframe, Dillon’s ideas come to life as interrelated, efficient patterns in a self-sufficient system.

With a naturally fractal-not-fractional logic, Dillon’s rhythms unfold between unresolved 5/4 tresillo patterns, complex tabla strokes and spark-jumping tics in a fluid, tactile dance of dynamic contrasts between strong/light, sudden/restrained, and bound/free made in reference to the notational instructions of choreographer Rudolf Laban. Working in and around the beat and philosophy, the album’s freehand physics contract and expand between the lissom rolls of Bhamra’s tabla in the first, to a harmonious balance of hard drum angles and swooping FM synth cadence featuring additional synth and vocal from Laurel Halo in ‘Workaround Two’, while the extruded strings of Lucy Railton create a sublime tension at the album’s palatecleansing denouement, triggering a scintillating run of technoid pieces that riff on the kind of swung physics found in Artwork’s seminal ‘Basic G’, or Rian Treanor’s disruptive flux with a singularly tight yet loose motion and infectious joy.

Amish Boy a.k.a. Sküge (not to be confused with Skudge) is Hugues Croibien, a thirty seven year old Belgian who has experimented with electronic music since his teens. With a diet of Seal Phüric, The Prodigy, Autechre and Unit Moebius stoking his primordial fire, Croibien began to align with the rage that exists in the Breakcore genre. Already an addict of reggae and dub at this time, Croibien decided to create some cut-up Raggacore with his brand new Ableton Live 3 software.

Meanwhile with friends, Croibien created 'Break n 'Brol', a non-lucrative association which tried to promote alternative electronic music in Liège where he lived. They premiered some Bassline stars "Kanji Kinetic" and "Squire of Gothos" on the Belgian scene, alongside other alternative electronic composers and musicians like Subjex, Ebola, Mustard Gunn and Herrmutt Lobby. Most of these appearing on vinyl for the first time. It starts out with four songs from the debut self-titled album. ‘C.N.S’ immediately shows off the balance of Brain Pilot.
Futuristic techno, timeless melodies and beat patterns influenced in IDM. ‘Feel Real Good’ continues this signature in referencing classic post-Detroit style with current UK intelligence while keeping that Belgian post-rave attitude. Embracing new styles like in ‘E.E.G.’ , it’s like listening to a Tri Repetae track from Autechre.

This mechanical jitter is a great segue into their second album’s featured tracks such as ‘Serotonine Flow’ , the otherworldly ‘Brainsine’ and the addictive robotic funk in ‘Nutrient’.
The anthology completes with Brain Pilot exploring an even deeper scientific sound with examples like ‘Wet-Wired (First Wiring)’ and ‘Substantia Electronica’. The track ‘Disconnect’ and the previously unreleased ‘Shifting’ bring listeners to the realm of 150bpm late-night rollers. When you dig for music you always want to recognize unknown gems and give them a new life.

Luca Lozano spent the 2020 lockdown sharpening his tools, using the time off from traveling and DJing to re-center and re-vise. As the pace of life slowed, so did the BPMs and the Klasse Wrecks boss sought refuge in the distraction that the studio and the creative practice can offer. 'Lozano 2.0' may sound like the producer shifting down a gear, but probably only with the goal of preserving his energy until the world is ready to spin again.

Mathias Schaffhäuser - Raue Luft EP

Mathias Schaffhauser, founder of German label Ware Records debuts on Third Ear with a 3-track 12". This is 'big-sky', expansive, driving Techno; even the beatless version of Grad Minus 12. Mathias Schaffhauser's Ware Records had a very recognisable sound. It was one of the defining labels of the Cologne Sound, most associated with Kompakt these days. But in the 90s and early 00s, Ware was as significant a label, especially for DJs. This release is very much a good example of THAT sound, still sounding fresh and bristling with good energy.

My Disco - Environment Remixes

Downwards’ rum gang of industrial misfits mutate My Disco’s ‘Environment’ album in slow, brutal and hypnotic styles ranging from Karl O’Connor’s smudged gamelan rework as Cub, to a 16 minute stunner by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement (Prurient & Low Jack)
‘Environment Remixes’ serves to tie up a 10 year loop since Karl O’Connor (Regis) first became rapt with My Disco’s 2010 single ‘Young/You’, which lead to him remixing the Aussie band’s song ‘My Decade’ in 2016, and eventually issue the reverberating clang of their ‘Environment’ LP on his Downwards label in 2019. For the remix suite, they’ve picked a gang of manacled producers to reanimate the album’s cranky mania and classic industrial spirit with suitably bruising results.
The swingeing, stygian flow of Karl O’Connor’s Cub remix of Equatorial Rainforest’ returns a big highlight,
possibly the project’s very slowest and loaded square between the eyes of early ‘90s Coil and 23 Skidoo, while Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement’s 16 minute take on LP centrepiece ‘Act’ follows that humid line to a frighteningly strong scene of cicadas and crackling neon sleaze sloshed with martial kettle-drum rolls recalling Con Schnitzler’s ‘Conditions of The Gas Giant’, before slipping into the lushest ambient techno mode.
Following the rush of his recent records, Sam Kerridge renders the doomy beckon of ‘Rival Colour’ more tentatively, stalked with spare drums and lugubrious bass, and Bristol’s Giant Swan follow a hunch for lurching halfstep on their reduction of ‘An Intimate Conflict’, for Oliver Ho to amp the phosphorus guitar burn of ‘1987’ as Slow White Fall with the sort of noisy conviction that also makes his new album such a zinger.

A new sub-label of the longstanding Canadian electro imprint Suction Records, Ice Machine — focusing on old-school wave/post-punk sounds — is thrilled to present a new, deluxe reissue of “Pow Wow”, the debut 1982 solo LP from Cabaret Voltaire’s Stephen Mallinder. Now expanded to a double-LP, and also released on CD/digital, it’s a definitive reissue which now includes Mallinder’s early solo discography in its entirety. This collection of mutant dub/funk/postpunk sounds just as fresh and contemporary in 2020 as it did in 1982 (note Autechre’s inclusion of standout cut “Del Sol” in a mix earlier this year), and highlights Mallinder’s crucial contributions to Cabaret Voltaire.

Some words from Mr.Mallinder on the scene and era from which “Pow Wow” was born: “It was an interesting, and inspiring, time. The primal caterwaul of punk was dying and lots of really significant things were emerging from the fires. Much looser vibes were in the air and there was a much more exploratory feel. Punk had championed a visceral, anti-intellectual approach but in truth the real characters brought so much more to the table, and what began to happen - from people like The Pop Group to Throbbing Gristle, and emerging scenes from No New York to Factory Records - is we began to embrace the art of it all. There was acknowledgement of the importance of books, films, graphic art, and experimentation with all those mediums. We were just as interested in turning over rocks to see what lay beneath, as throwing them. There was a sense of new magik emerging.”

“Pow Wow” was commissioned by the Fetish Records label, and recorded at the Cabs’ Western Works studio, where Mallinder would spend his days recording with Cabaret Voltaire, and continue on alone into night recording his debut solo material. “I slept very little in those days,” he adds, continuing: “It was done on 8 track and very multi-tracked, so lots of recording, then bouncing, and overdubbing, to get the integrated feel of the tracks. I became very adept at pressing record then jumping onto equipment to play it - it was actually a very 'live' record in that sense. I've always seen rhythm at the core of what I do so I loved the layering of counter rhythms. The sequence/arpeggiator parts were all drum machine triggers that were played live. It was about creating a distinct groove so arrangements came from weaving in and out of those linear grooves. It was fun to play everything from drums, guitars, keys, trumpet, percussion, tapes… and record and produce it all. Prince got it from me!”

Surprisingly, Mallinder’s first solo LP would also prove to be his last - that is, until last year’s critically-acclaimed solo return “Um Dada”, on Dais.

This new edition of “Pow Wow” contains 14 songs, and is housed in a recreation of the original, iconic Neville Brody jacket, painstakingly recreated using scans of Brody’s original artwork elements. The 2LP vinyl edition is in a reverse board, thick-spine jacket, and adds a 12”x24” folded poster/insert, featuring unused elements from Brody’s original designs, sketches, and instructions for the LP. The CD edition comes in a reverse board, 6-panel digipack.

'We Attack Before Dawn' is the 3rd instalment in the 'Sonar Base Transmissions' series on Deeptrax created by the long standing Dutch Electro pioneer Frank De Groodt under his Sonar Base alias. After the Deeptrax reissue of the legendary first album 'Sonar Bases 4-10' and the first vinyl issue of the mini album 'Dark Matter', this next chapter is yet another collection of savage, clever and spooky electro tracks.

First issued on vinyl by Cultivated Electronics in 2012, this reissue of 'We Attack Before Dawn' features a somewhat different tracklisting.

It opens with the full bodied, TB-303-smeared electro of 'The Deadly Storms of Uranus'. Slices of snare tear through an acrid acid line with shadows stalking the backdrop - a turgid and terrific opener. The second one, 'The Soul Of e1-Q42z' was only available as digital download before, but this track with pitch-dark haunted synth sounds and rolling beats would perfectly fit in a horror movie soundtrack and fully deserves a vinyl release.

The 303 is once again employed for 'The Journey Home'. But the aggression of 'Deadly Storms...' is pared back, with Sonar Base lowering the BPM for a meandering work of dereliction. 'The Swarm' is a hardy piece of raw electro too, but in comparison to the first trio of mechanized militia 'The Swarm' is sheathed. Last one, 'Photon Filers' is also on vinyl for the first time, and much like 'The Soul...', it sends you severe shivers up and down your spine. Don't say we didn't warn you!

Frank de Groodt started releasing in the early 1990s, on Djax-Up-Beats (as The Operator, Optic Crux, Urban Electro) and on U-Trax (Sonar Base, Pieces of a Pensive State of Mind). Two of his later releases as FastGraph (on Klakson) got reissued in 2018. He is also involved in projects like Ultradyne and Random XS and one anonymous project...

The Chi Factory - The Mantra Recordings

Dedicated to the life and work of Robert Lax (1915-2000), the American poet who lived on Patmos, Greece, as a self-exiled hermit since the sixties. Jack Kerouac called Lax 'one of the great original voices of our times, a Pilgrim in search of beautiful innocence'.

The Chi Factory would like to give special thanks to his good Patmian friends Ulf Knaus and Nikos Eliou, who showed us his house on Patmos (everything is still the same since he left) and also his favourite old wooden door (see leaflet).

His great minimalistic poetry became a source of inspiration for the Mantra Recordings. His life on Patmos was far away from public attention - quiet and always surrounded by the skies, seas, cats and birds. Lax was a real dreamcatcher.

A native of Poznan, the multi-instrumentalist composer/producer Waclaw Zimpel has steadily been gaining recognition as one of the most singular and original talents to have emerged from Poland in contemporary times. His second solo album 'Massive Oscillations' is set for release on January 31st, and is his first for the Amsterdam-based label Ongehoord. At various points Waclaw deploys bass clarinet, alto clarinet, electronics, prepared upright piano and Yuri Landman guitar object. Wojciech Traczyk adds double bass and Holly Hock provides vocals to 'Release', whist all tracks were mixed by James Holden, who according to Zimpel "added his magic touch". 'Massive Oscillations' is Zimpel's most accomplished album to date - a hypnotic and beguiling work given to moments of subtle euphoria. Gently rhythmic, repetetive but morphing grooves are decorated with elegant musical flourishes. An exquisite vertical listening experience, tracks rev like ignition on a motor. They swell, undulate and breathe in a non linear motion, hovering more than moving, or steadily levitating heavenwards. 'Massive Oscillations' is the result of a nine-day residency at the Willem Twee studio in Den Bosch, Netherlands. The longplayer is not only a consolidation of Zimpel's previous experiments, but is also driven by his curiosity and desire to explore new avenues and possibilities, striving to create an innovative musical vernacular. Inspired as much by jazz as electronics, minimalism and roots music from across the world, he doesn't so much blur boundaries as eradicate them altogether. "I was looking for new kinds of sounds and had an idea of where I wanted 'Massive Oscillations' to go," says Zimpel, "but that all changed the moment I started playing with the studio's collection of vintage synthesizers and electronic equipment." In keeping with his restless improvisational spirit, Zimpel jettisoned previous ideas and set about using the studio's array of oscillators, generators, sequencers, tape recorders and filters (alongside his beloved clarinet) to capitalize on opportunities the facility offered him. Subliminal factors were also at play: Having tuned the oscillators by ear for 'Sine Tapes' and title track 'Massive Oscillations', whilst attempting to work out melodies on his clarinet, Zimpel found he'd inadvertently arrived at a lower frequency than intended. By a happy accident, he realized he'd subconsciously been tuning in to the bells of St Jan's Cathedral, which is located close to the studio. "It was this kind of magical coincidence that really helped shape the recording", he recalls.

Binary Digit - Never Owned A 303

The next instalment of quickly rising star Binary Digit comes on Seven Hills Records, following two EP’s on the Zeitnot sub-label. The Never Owned a 303 EP ups the ante into stratospheric energy levels. Feel good anthems ‘Acid Racing Head’ and ‘Luring Acid’ work wonders on the floor. While the headier jams ‘Ze7u II’ and ‘Never Owned a 303’ are better suited to deep off-kilter segments in the dance. Positively Drexciyan sounds feature in ‘Virtual Modular 2 Tape’, and a pure adrenaline rush inducing ‘Crazy 4 R’ makes this release a combination of different moods, Binary Digit’s most varied record yet.

Scanning Backwards, das zweite Soloalbum von Phase Fatale nach seinem 2017er-Debüt auf Hospital Productions, ist Musik über Kontrolle. Mittels der Verbindung von Klang als Waffe und psychologischer Manipulation als konzeptuelles Fundament, erforscht Hayden Payne Wege, auf denen Musik – und besonders Subbassfrequenzen – benutzt werden, das Denken zu beeinflussen als auch Emotionen und Verhalten zu synchronisieren: von Militärtechnologie zu Sound Systems zur Körperlichkeit und Sexualität queerer Technokultur.

Ausgehend von seinem innovativen Post-Punk-Ansatz zu Dance Music – nachzuhören auf seinen EPs für unterton und Ostgut Ton – bezieht sich der Berghain-Resident auf seinen Hintergrund als Gitarrist und Toningenieur. Daraus entstand auf Scanning Backwards eine berauschende Mischung aus gebrochener Rhythmik, Noise- und Shoegaze-beeinflussten Technos, oft mit langsamerer Gangart. Am Ende steht Musik mit Platz und Tempo zur weiteren Ausdehnung, das intensive Brausen von Frequenzen hervorhebend, die sowohl in der sonischen Kriegsführung und funktionaler Dance Music vorherrschen. Im Verlauf der acht Stücke, die eine Kombination aus historischen und fiktionalen Narrativen aus Literatur und Science Fiction im Titel tragen, ergründen Paynes rhythmische Exkursionen unterschiedliche Manifestationen von Klang als Macht – spezifisch im Sinne des Berghains als musikalisches Instrument. Dies reflektiert auch das Artwork des Albums: einem frühen Flyer der Partyreihe SNAX entnommen und offensichtliche Hommage an die Fetischisierung von Machtdynamiken.

In seinen eigenen Worten: „Alle Stücke dieses Albums, gleich welcher Stil, habe ich zugeschnitten, um auf ganz bestimmte Weise im Berghain zu klingen. Im Laufe der vielen Jahre als Tänzer inmitten des Dancefloors und auch während meiner DJ-Sets als Resident bemerkte ich, welche Frequenzen den Körper so richtig penetrieren. Das beinhaltet Sprache, Hochfrequenz- und Hirn-penetrierende Instrumentierung, Sägezahn- und Schlagbohrhammerästhetiken – die hatte ich bis dahin noch nicht so oft benutzt, denke aber, dass sie Einfluss auf das Denken und Gedächtnis haben. Das trifft besonders zu auf einen Ort, der schwule und Fetisch-Geschichte auf unerwartete Weise mit Musik kombiniert, auf fast kultische Art. Eine musikalische und physische Deinstallation und Neuprogrammierung, Psychic Driving und De-patterning, das Löschen und Ersetzen von Erinnerungen.“

Scanning Backwards wacht über die manipulativen Eigenschaften elektronischer Musik (Mantras, Loops, unterschwellige Botschaften) und wie Rhythmus sowohl Bewegung als auch das Denken in Einklang bringt. Ein Puls koordinierter Klang- und Hirnwellen.

Scanning Backwards, Phase Fatale’s second full-length album following his 2017 debut album for Hospital Productions, is music about control. Using the connection between weaponized sound and psychological manipulation as a conceptual foundation, Hayden Payne explores the ways in which music – and sub frequencies in particular – are used to influence thinking and to synchronize emotions and behavior: from military technology to sound systems and the physicality and sexuality of queer techno culture.

Known for his innovative post-punk takes of dance music as featured on EPs for unterton and Ostgut Ton, the Berghain resident draws on his background as both a guitarist and sound engineer to create a heady mix of broken rhythms, noise-, and shoegaze-inflected techno, often at slower tempos. The result is music with space and pace to expand, highlighting the intense rushes of frequencies found in both sonic warfare and functional dance music. Over eight tracks named after a combination of historical and fictional narratives from literature and science fiction, Payne’s rhythmic excursions explore different manifestations of sound as power – specifically within the context of seeing Berghain as an instrument itself. This is also reflected in the album artwork, taken from an early flyer for the SNAX party series and an obvious ode to the fetishization of power dynamics.

In his own words: “All tracks on the album, no matter the style, were tailored to sound a certain way in Berghain – something I figured out through years of dancing in the middle of the floor, DJing as a resident and investigating what frequencies really penetrate the body. This includes speech and high-frequency, brain-penetrating instrumentation and drilling textures that I had not utilized so often before, but which I think also have an effect on thought and memory. It's especially true in a space where gay and fetish roots combine with music in unexpected ways, almost in a cultish manner. A musical and physical deprogramming and reprogramming, psychic driving and de-patterning, the erasing and replacing of memories.”

Ultimately, Scanning Backwards surveys not only the manipulative properties of electronic music (mantras, loops, subliminal messages) but also how rhythm facilitates both moving and thinking in synchrony; a pulse of coordinated sound- and brainwaves.

A master in letting shapes find their form, Dixon allows the listener to wallow in recurring scenes. Lost Communication Procedure, Found In Space and Remarkable Wanderer etch a sound world of choral vibrations and cinematic dirge. Where gaseous clouds scrape the natural sonic pastures of such environments, the hypnotized listener staggers a drunken step, moving sideways by 0 or 1 or -1 into new scenes. Not least an expert in industrial abstraction, a human silhouette permeates Dixon’s sound. His ethereal storytelling portrays the heart-rending romance of Unconditional Love and unearths in I’m Away In Detroit monologuing moodscapes recalling our GPS voice assistants.
Out of Darkness initial recalls Kraftwerk’s Geiger counter, as from pure signal data and feedback spells an unceasing locomotive wormhole. Hazy, dense grooves drive across bleak city scenes in We Can Rebuild Him, into the raw vibe of Framework and the rude stabs of Spectrum of Light. The varying presence of Dixon's work is one of his textural signatures, at arm's length, brushing right within, and far out. The bumping mood of Earth Station is one such moment, close enough to isolate the diving bass somewhere within, simultaneously from afar it becomes positively gravitational.
The first two records of the series are rightfully considered among the finest embodiments of contemporary minimalism, symbolic documents of afro-futurism. This new work revives the classic series, continuing the relationship between Tresor and the undisputed master of Detroit techno into the present day.

Delsin turns its attention to the archives of one of the great early pioneers of Dutch techno - Eevo Lute Muzique. The label was founded in 1991 by Wladimir Manshanden and Stefan Robbers (who was already recording seminal early techno records as Terrace for Djax-Up-Beats). Channeling the inspiration of the Detroit originators and mixing it up with their own synth pop and new wave influences, Manshanden and Robbers (adopting the Florence alias) forged a bold aesthetic with Eevo Lute, both musically and visually. This was an early iteration of techno as listening music, with an emphasis on expression and narrative over dancefloor functionality, helped in no small part by Manshanden's striking poetry. This double set of remastered, reissued tracks gathers together the earliest Florence and Wladimir M. material, largely recorded between 1991 and 1994, across five discs - the definitive document of a treasured piece of Dutch techno history. Comes with inlay and liner notes by Oliver Warwick.

Die 12" ist die erste, die über Bonobos neues Label, OUTLIER - das in Partnerschaft mit Ninja Tune gegründet wurde - auf den Markt kommt, und erweitert seine Veranstaltungsreihe mit Club-Shows und Festival-Takeovers auf der ganzen Welt unter dem gleichen Banner. OUTLIER wurde im ikonischen, wenn auch inzwischen leider geschlossenen New Yorker Club Output ins Leben gerufen und hat Bonobo eine Reihe von Nächten und Festivals auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks spielen und kuratieren lassen, zu denen bisher das Melt! Festival, Nuits Sonores, OFFSonar, sowie eine unvergessliche Nacht im Astra Kulturhaus mit Matthew Herbert, Dauwd und natürlich Bonobo himself, sowie andere gehörten.

"Things take a psychedelic turn for SchleiBen 7 with a welcome to the label of arch exponents of mind expansion in NYC's Georgia and the unlikely but no less diverse inclusion of Balearic stalwarts A Man Called Adam. Having Georgia in the series might not now be a surprise, however discussions with this open, genuine duo started during a visit to New York over 3 years ago and so here, finally realised in this fluid journey of confident pace and harmony, is the best of their freeform evocations. A duo in the everyday sense, Brian Close and Justin Tripp are video / music production teamsters of unnatural talent. Having gained a status of their own that has seen them release for the likes of Palto Flats and FTD, the five pieces that form their contribution drip with psychedelic intent. Culled from archives, the interest is how the tracks - made over different years, locations and situations in life - meld in to something poetic simply by being placed within a specific format. Avant-chimes ebb to rhythmic pulses and erudite teachings before dark percussion and Eastern melodies reach a clattering, but gentle finale. With an upcoming collaborative album with Secret Circuit due on the label later in 2018, as well as recent works with RVNG Intl's Matt Werth and recordings for Sacred Summits' brethren Firecracker Recordings, it's a warm, effusive glow of a welcome. In contrast, the inclusion of A Man Called Adam in the series may indeed surprise but is a false comprehension. The "Sketches" included here show AMCA away from their Balearic pop incarnation of the last thirty years and towards the academia that both members Sally Rodgers and Steve Jones have pursued in the last decade. With both completing PHDs, Sally ('The Diachronic Impact of Technology-Led Abstraction in Oral, Written and Music-based Poetries') is a senior lecturer at Leeds College Of Music, while Steve ('Mobilise: The Carry Principle, Sound and Mobile Media') is based out of de Montfort University, now is the perfect time to highlight the diverse sound environments they have been working in. The music that makes up these recordings are drawn from sound works and audio experiments completed in recent years. From sound toys and apps to home made glass organs and electro-acoustic sound, custom patches to spoken word manipulations, the sketches are excerpts - some evolved from commissions for the National Science Museum, BBC Radio 4 and live performances with the world renowned video artist Milosh JL - fused especially for this release. Bringing these generated pieces in to an audible "mix" creates a discourse of their work in performance, interactions and visual media. An intellectualised album therefore, but still in the premise of the series to allow artists to present something new, unique, discrete, hidden even, all with the aim of giving the recipient the chance to sit back and (un)listen. "

Bristol grime producer OH91 returns to Coyote Records for the first time since the back end of 2014 with new single, 'Shuttle'. Having released his debut record, 'Stealth', with Coyote back in 2013, OH91 also released a remix of Rapid's 'Xtra' beat on white label through the imprint in 2014, backed up by a an edit of Footsie's 'Prang Boy' from label mate Chemist — the 12' sold out in less than a week. Releases with up-and-coming indies White Peach, Trapped Audio and Banana Stand Sound have also checked his progress over the last two years, as well as collaborative production work with long-time friend and mentor, Sir Spyro. Honing in on a day-dot instrumental grime sound favoured by MCs, OH91's work on 'Shuttle' is sharp and brutally effective, sirens form the basis of the short intro, as a booming, looping beat — boosted by tense, anxious strings — slingshots the track straight into the dance. On the flip, Dutch producer JLSXND7RS, fresh from producing a number of tracks for Wiley on latest album, 'The Godfather', throws down a fierce, contorted remix full of warped sounds and eerie, sci-fi bleeps.

written in 2019 and 2020 across berlin, the carioca spheres of rio and his hometown of mel-bourne, utopioid expands and adapts fantastic man’s much loved musical tropes for long for-mat. it’s a well-balanced and deeply crafted album and features a cameo by fellow melbourne rising-star memphis lk on ‘mazes’, resurrects the spirit of the nineties rompler on ‘forbidden fiction’ and glides you through peak-acid euphoria with ‘d’oxygen’ and ‘diaspora’.

utopioid follows a series of recent 12s, which include ‘dj mentality’ on his own superconscious records and ’solar surfing’ on stuttgart’s kitjen along with his 2016 lp titled ‘altitude attitudes’ under the alias mind lotion on parisian label antinote.

The Rockafeller Skank is a manic collage of surf-guitar looped into ever-tightening spirals, utterly simplistic, but a work of devilish genius. Gangster Tripping and Fucking In Heaven are in a similar celebratory mood, but to prove that the Fatboy doesn't always work by a formula, try the purloined gospel of Praise You, or the rave nostalgia of Acid 8000. * We have never had a remix project of our work so this is a really fun one for us. You kind of get scared but excited at the same time as you wait for each track to come back! But all the guys on this project are guys we admire and respect greatly so we knew they would deliver the goods. 'Bristol' was just made for Break to do, we'd actually earmarked that one a couple of years ago for him. LSB is just on fire with his work at the moment, Alix we've loved since before we joined Shogun, Fracture was our only choice on 'Trigger Warning' as he's just the don for that sound and we've been really impressed by new Shogun family members Was A Be.

* Also we felt we'd like to contribute something to the project so we picked one of our favourite tunes with Lucy Kitchen and gave it a little sprucing up. The 'Night Vision VIP' has been doing damage in our sets for months now so we felt it rounded the EP off nicely. We hope you guys enjoy it as much as we have been!' Technimatic

THE MICRONAUT - Olympia(Summer Games)

Der Multi-Instrumentalist und Produzent hat sich mit fein strukturierten und enthusiastischen Kompositionen bereits einen Namen gemacht. Sein 2016 erschienenes Album „Forms“ zog mit seiner spielerischen Verwebung von Rhythmen und Samples die Aufmerk-samkeit der elektronischen Musikszene auf sich. In diesem Jahr veröffentlicht The Micronaut nun Olympia (Summer Games) – ein Album, das seinen sorgfältigen Produktionsstil weiterführt und dem Geist der Olympischen Sommerspiele gewidmet ist. Denn auch wenn diese abgesagt wurden, so sind die damit verbundenen Tugenden wie Durchhaltevermögen und Zusammenhalt zeitlos und gerade in diesen Wochen um so wichtiger. Solch grundlegende Prinzipien, die den Geist der Olympischen Spiele ausmachen, sind es auch, die The Micronaut umgetrieben haben. Und so war es kein Zufall, dass Summer Games entstanden ist: „Ich habe bisher immer Konzept-Alben veröffentlicht. Dieses Mal habe ich Olympia gewählt, weil es nicht nur Wettkampf, sondern auch eine Friedensbewegung ist, bei der es um die Menschen geht, ganz egal welcher Nation sie angehören.“ Diesen vielfältigen und stets vitalen, lebhaften Geist spiegelt das Album wider: Das verspielt-zarte Uneven Bars oder das träumerisch-sphärische Table Tennis, sie alle erzählen von den besonderen Momenten, von Siegen und Niederlagen und all den Facetten, die dem Sport innewohnen. Dadurch ist eine Reise entstanden, eine schwungvolle, aber auch turbulente Achterbahnfahrt, die den künstlerischen Anspruch The Micronauts abbildet: „Lebhaft, expressiv, dramatisch, manchmal ruhig, manchmal kraftvoll – ich versuche immer die Vibes von Wanderlust, Hoffnung und individuellen Momenten in meiner Musik einzufangen“ – erzählt der in Leipzig lebende Künstler. Und dieses Mal liegt das Spannungsfeld zwischen sportlichen Disziplinen – in dem sich The Micronaut musikalisch ausdrückt. Wobei seine Musik keinesfalls zum Sich-Messen anregt, vielmehr sind viele Tracks mit ihrem übermütigen, optimistischen Vibe für die Tanzflächen der Clubs geeignet, um sich die Anspannung der zuweilen olympischen Herausforderungen des Alltags von der Seele zu tanzen. Dazu hat The Micronaut anspruchsvolle Arrangements mit fließenden Melodien und unaufgeregtem Gesang kombiniert und den Weg für ein neues, collagenartiges musikalisches Genre geebnet. Bisweilen dreht Summer Games sogar in Richtung Elektro-Pop ab, dann wieder ist es inspiriert von old-schooligem Hip Hop and in anderen Momenten mündet und explodiert es förmlich in intelligent gesetzten musikalischen Hochsprüngen. Die Messlatte liegt hoch – doch bei allem Auf und Ab scheint immer durch, dass The Micronaut ein begeisterter Musikliebhaber ist, der Ideen und Inspirationen von überall her sammelt und sie unter Einsatz seines ganz eigenen emotionalen Prismas übersetzt.

Adrian Corker - Music for Lock Grooves

SN Variations is pleased to announce its 5th release.Adrian Corker returns after a break living in Warsaw with two tracks composed for Lock Grooves recorded onto acetate,percussion by Sam Wilson(Riot Ensemble/Actress) and violin performed by Aisha Orazbayeva.The tracks also feature the piano of Mark Knoop and the voice of Josephine Stephenson.

A lock groove is one cycle of one groove on a record.This is 1.8 sec cut at 33RPM and 1.33 cut at 45RPM.Having used lock grooves on film scores for British film Waiting for You and The Have Nots directed by Florian Hoffmeister, Corker wanted to explore their potential further in a standalone more percussive release. He used the cutting lathe currently residing in the living room of The Exchange mastering legend Graeme Durham to experiment with different sounds cut onto acetate and then recorded over different durations back into a computer. These are combined forming frames for performances of violin, percussion and piano.

The record will be released on a vinyl pressing of 250 copies and download on July 5th

Parallel zu seinem Mini-Album "Night Melody" veröffentlicht der Londoner Elektronik-Songwriter Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles eine limitierte Neuauflage seiner EP "Sonne" auf gelbem Vinyl.

Die 12'' war erstmals 2014 in die Läden gekommen. Der Titelsong beginnt mit einem "sehr subtilen Set von Melodien, welches sich fast gänzlich ohne Überzeugung wiederholt, um dann schrittweise einer riesigen Collage an Farbe und Kraft Platz zu machen", um es mit Wests Worten auszudrücken. Indem es sich nicht auf einen konventionellen Beat verlässt, ist dieses Stück ein erstklassiges Beispiel dafür, wie ein analoger Synthesizer die Kraft und das Moment einer ganzen Rhythmusgruppe erschaffen kann.

Von den verzerrten Wellen in "3 Chords", gleichermaßen wachsend und schrumpfend, bis hin zu den sich kontinuierlich beschleunigenden und verlangsamenden, rhythmischen Wellen in "Recovery", bilden der Moog Voyager, Prophet und ein altes Bandverzögerungsgerät den Kernsound der EP. In Songs wie "Helios", "Haunt' und "Think Tank" ist West wiederum live an der Akustik-Gitarre oder dem Schlagzeug zu hören

TEEBS veröffentlicht Vinyl Reissue seines kultisch verehrten Debüts und Durchbruchsalbums „Ardour“ an, welches vor 10 Jahren erstmals via Brainfeeder veröffentlicht wurde!

Am 11. Oktober 2010 veröffentlichte Brainfeeder das Debütalbum eines 23-jährigen Ex-Skaters, Malers und Musikproduzenten aus Chino Hills namens Teebs (wirklicher Name Mtendere Mandowa). Der Titel "Ardour" bedeutet großer Enthusiasmus, Liebe oder Leidenschaft und war eine treffende Beschreibung für seine von Natur aus warmen, üppig texturierten Beats. Er ist ein unbestrittener Klassiker im Brainfeeder-Kanon und gilt weithin als ein wesentliches Kapitel in dem sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Puzzle der globalen "Beat-Szene”. Auf „Ardour“ (10th Anniversary Edition) finden sich neben den Hits wie „Why Like This“ oder „Gordon“ sechs neue Songs auf der D-Seite, die bis heute unveröffentlicht blieben. Teebs, der seine Wurzeln beim "My Hollow Drum"-Kollektiv, Dublab und Low End Theory hat, ist eine feste Größe in der Musikszene von Los Angeles. "Meine kreative Familie in LA ist so wichtig", erklärt er. "Sie ist ein Teil davon, wer ich bin, wenn ich nach draußen gehe und wie andere in LA mich sehen. Ich liebe das Gefühl der Gemeinschaft und versuche zu verstehen, wie ich darin nützlich sein kann.

Nach "Ardour" (2010) veröffentlichte Teebs "Collections" (2011), "Estara" (2014) und, nach einer fünfjährigen Pause, 2019 sein neuestes Album "Anicca" mit der Hilfe einer Reihe von Musikfreunden, darunter Panda Bear (Animal Collective), Sudan Archives, Ringgo Ancheta alias MNDSGN, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson und Anna Wise. Von allen Seiten gefeiert, gab Pitchfork "Anicca" eine glühende 7,8-seitige Rezension, in der Mandowas "mühelose, formwandelnde Tracks, die die Zeit stillstehen lassen" gepriesen wurden. Unterdessen beschrieb FADER die Platte als "zutiefst atmosphärisch... kühl und unheimlich"

From the city that brought you LSD comes a new album by Marco Papiro, a Swiss-Italian musician and graphic designer who has gained some notoriety with his album covers for the likes of Panda Bear and Sun Araw. 'Automare' is Papiro's seventh solo album, recorded on 4-track cassette, on hard-disk, in public and in private, entirely self-produced and now released on Nikolaienko's Muscut label.The five hauntingly evocative tracks offer a variety of atmospheres from surreal to arcane, from celestial to subaqueous. Synthetic sounds (some mature EMS, Moog and Roland) are combined with other assorted instruments (organ, shehnai, electric guitar and bass,) and emulsified through various time-and-space-bending devices. There are no percussions, with one surprisingly groovy exception, in which a drum machine is being generously treated with phaser and envelope filters - think of early Cabaret Voltaire with a North Saharan touch.



Papiro's handcrafted artificial vocals are anything but human, but all the more compelling: out of the fluorescent Plankton of the side-long opening track 'Rhenus Rebus' rises a siren's voice, reminiscent of Alide Maria Salvetta in Battiato's 'Campane', joined in a final mantra by an oboe borrowed from an inebriated Third Ear Band. Entering a chimeric karaoke bar, the title track 'Automare' makes the album even more bizarre by introducing a distinctive pop feel. Back to the abstract world, the following 'Polmonella' - a live recording with additional musicians Anthony Glass (aka Antenna Tony Monorail) and Markus Stähli (of Roy & the Devil's Motorcycle) - is a fevery exploration of cosmic territories in the manner of Harmonia, while the alien articulation of 'Incom' sounds unlike anything else ever recorded.

Dan Rincon plies a fine line in textured electro-techno as half of Ambien Baby with pivotal producer D. Tiffany on his Isla label, however ‘Íntima’ reveals a more sensual side to his style, adapting early ‘90s chill out room vibes with seductive rhythms in a way that beautifully whispers the sound of 2020.
The ‘Íntima’ original features Rincon reciting text written by Julia De Burgos, a Puerto Rican poet, in drowsy delivery over dreamlike pads and a dembow groove that surely recalls the sexy suss of DJ Python’s ‘Mas Amable’ album as much as Photek’s seminal ‘Into The 90’s’ classic for Metalheadz. The B-side extends the pleasure for beanbag dwellers to finish their spliff, switching out the vox for deep blue sax lines by Davie Biddle and landing in lowlit DJ Krush trip hop zones.

The METATRON is now out! A live album which publish as the ninth reference Faith Disciplines, a label dedicated to industrial, experimental electronics and noisy shit, which has already released notable references, such as German Army/GeAr or Group. METATRÓN has markedly tekno bases, some of them more teknopunk, kind of Suicide with a rockabilly Alan Vega, or others more minimal similar to Bruce Gilbert’s Dome. But for me the coolest part of the project is the set: piezoelectric microphones makes sound to a 1.8-sheet stainless steel as a bass drum, a stainless steel board with a group of thin galvanized plates, reverb springs, industrial trays and many rivets that serve as “melody” in addition it uses a few accessories such as cages, a drill, steel strips, threaded rods with washers with the same metric, spoons and others. All this sound mass is processed by cheap pedals and pedalboards (digital microprocessors) for guitar, such as the ZOOM GFX-707, or the ZOOM G3XN, with this one, several LOOPS are built in an artisanal way (manual mode) composing the horny danceable bases. No musical instruments, no computers, synthesizers, sequencers or shits (listen, all that is very expensive) is necessary to start to make some beats to dance.

Tomoko Sauvage - Fischgeist

Fischgeist was recorded in a former water tank in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg in August 2019. The nineteenth-century brick building consists of five layered circles, with a spiral staircase in the middle leading up to an exit to a hilltop. Inside, it’s humid and cold, the temperature always around 8–10 C°. The building’s acoustics produce a long reverberation that lasts up to 20 seconds.

‘One day between recording sessions, a man, a passerby, wanted to look inside the building. He told me that it used to be full of fish. For a second I imagined a huge round aquarium with loads of fish swimming around in circles. Then I realized that he meant dead fish were kept there, to be sold on markets during the GDR era. But the image of fish swimming in the space stayed with me.’

In conversation with the space of the water tank, Tomoko Sauvage searches beyond the limits of her self-invented ‘natural synthesizers’: porcelain and glass bowls, filled with water and amplified with hydrophones.

While she continues to develop some of the classic techniques heard on her previous album Musique Hydromantique (Shelter Press, 2017) – hydrophonic feedback (Kinetosis Study) and ‘fortune biscuits’ (porous pieces of terracotta that emit tiny singing bubbles) (Deluge) – here new elements are combined with delicate gestures to make curious noises: stroking bowls’ surfaces to imitate the voices of sea mammals (Metamorphosis), drawing dots and circles by rubbing stones against stones underwater (Exit) … The underwater amplification of quasi-inaudible sound is even more magnified in the air by the echo of the water tank. Not only tiny bubbles, but also micro-movements of the bones and veins of the hand holding the sonorous objects in the water, are intensely amplified – sounding like a tempest on the opening Deluge. Sauvage’s longtime research into hydrophonic feedback develops with her new obsession with natural harmonics and sympathetic resonance. In Flying Vessels, the percussive notes of struck bowls resonate and turn into feedback loops before decaying, fueled by electric signal gain. Kinetosis Study is a sonic etude on fluid dynamics – the flow velocity, pressure and density of manually shaped water waves directly controlling the aquatic synthesizer’s parameters.

August, when the mid-summer Ghost Festival is held, is traditionally known as the Ghost Month throughout East Asia. The spirits of the dead visit their living families, who welcome them with feasts, dancing and music. Miniature lantern-laden boats are released in rivers, to help lost ghosts find their way home.

Animated by formless matter – water, electricity, sound – Fischgeist celebrates a phantasmagoric journey, as the souls of aquatic lifeforms find their way out of the labyrinth of the water tank.

The fourteenth instalment of the exclusive release series which sees extremely limited vinyl presses of Hospital classics, has drawn for four untestable originals from Logistics, Q-Project, London Elektricity and Danny Byrd.
First up is Logistics’ 2006 liquid-funk anthem ‘City Life’ originally featured on his era-defining debut album ‘Now More Than Ever’ supported by legendary figures including Fabio & Grooverider, LTJ Bukem and Andy C. Hypnotizing piano loops and deadly subs keep things rolling on this exemplary slice of fast soul funk.
Drum & bass all-star Q-Project is up next as his timeless banger ‘Obsession’ gets a 2020 vinyl revival. Originally supported by the likes of High Contrast and Friction, ‘Obsession’ still receives widespread rotation to this day as its unforgettable melody and groove assert it as a certified dance music destroyer.
“Fast Soul Music” is the brainchild of Hospital head-honcho London Elektricity and was initially featured on his 2003 album ‘Billion Dollar Gravy’. KARIMA WALKER - WAKING THE DREAMING BODY

Waking the Dreaming Body is the follow-up to Tucson artist Karima Walker's 2017 standout album Hands In Our Names, which garnered praise from Pitchfork, MOJO, and Bandcamp. The album includes dense harmonic arrangements of synthesizer, guitar, piano, percussion, field recordings, tape loops and Karima's dulcet singing voice. The final result is a 40-minute dream-narrative of her conscious and subconscious minds that oscillates between the rich textures of her ambient work and the melody and poetry of her melancholic, Americana-tinged songwriting, their ebb and flow recalling liminal states of half-sleep where images and emotions are recalled and forecasted from the previous night's dreams. Night falls in regular intervals throughout the album, forming a natural dialogue between waking and dreaming.

Harry Bertoia's Glowing Sounds LP contains three versions of the same composition, each transferred at different tape speeds in accordance with the artist's instructions. This is the third LP to be released from Bertoia's extensive tape archive and it's the first, of many, to be released using instructions left behind by the artist himself.

Bertoia wrote the concept for this Glowing Sounds LP on a note in 1975 and slipped it into the master tape case where it sat unread for 45 years. The idea was simple, transfer the original recording at its original speed and two slower speeds. Bertoia noticed that the results, however, were profound.

Recorded on January 20, 1975 using two large gongs, Glowing Sounds is one of the most powerfully minimal recordings yet discovered in Bertoia's collection. The artist's note left with the tape indicated that it was recorded at a speed of 15 IPS (inches per second) but slowing it down to speeds of 7.5 IPS and 3.25 IPS were quite effective for enhanced playback. Side A features the original 15 IPS recording and the 50% slower 7.5 IPS recording. Side B features a 20 minute, ultra-slow version at 3.25 IPS.

Long, deep drones and powerful overtones define the sound of this recording. Comparison of the three speeds provides a revealing magnification of Bertoia's gongs, overtones and the artist's inventive approach to performance, composition and recording.

Bio:
Harry Bertoia first gained some artistic visibility in the early 1940s, then came into prominence with his sculptural, ergonomic chairs, produced by Knoll Furniture beginning in 1952, which quickly became classics of modernist furniture. Inspired by the resonant sounds emanating from metals as he worked them and encouraged by his brother Oreste, whose passion was music, Harry restored a fieldstone "Pennsylvania Dutch" barn as the home for this experiment in sounding sculptures which he had begun in the late 1950s. Bertoia was an obsessive composer and relentless experimenter, often working late into the night and accumulating hundreds of tapes of his best performances; Oreste, too, would explore and record the sculptures' sounds during his annual visits to his brother's home in rural Pennsylvania.

Harry Bertoia's recently dismantled Sonambient barn collection was an attentive listener's paradise full of warm, expressive instruments that were gorgeous visually and audibly. Nothing could prepare you, even on return visits, for the overwhelming experience of entering the spacious wood and plaster interior where gongs, some of them giant, hung among the ranks of standing sculptures of various metals. Over nearly twenty years of adding, culling and rearranging, Bertoia carefully selected nearly 100 harmonious pieces ranging in height from under a foot to more than fifteen feet. He considered this barn a full experience, sights and sounds comprising not a collection of works, but one piece unto itself. It was here, deep in the woods, that his Sonambient recording work took place.

Learning by experimentation was common for Bertoia and he mastered the art of tape recording, turning the Sonambient barn into a sound studio with four overhead microphones hanging from the rafters in a square formation. He would experiment with overdubbing by performing along to previous recordings, sometimes backwards, constantly improving his methods while also honing his performance skills. Bertoia was a careful editor of his own work and only chosen recordings remained, each with a date and carefully considered observations written on a note included with each tape. Through these pieces of paper a the artist's logic can be uncovered, a careful approach to composition, ideas, feelings and forms. The story of Sonambient barn collection will slowly be told through the release of recordings from the archive as well as installations and performances built from Bertoia's own recordings, lectures and a book.

Crazy Doberman - Two Tales Of Lost Witness Marks

Tim Gick's already-warped patchwork editing of the entire Crazy Doberman output thus far turns increasingly glitched out across the splattered quiltwork of a nine track LP on Aguirre. Any coherent sense of time departs early on the A-side; kicked off with the familiar sound of the Dobes' synth throb and Love-cry woodwinds on top of completely fried electric guitar squiggling, all suspended in spiritual foam; then battered to bits on the greasy flat top of the record's b-side.

Ringing modular synth sirens evoke alarmingly huge Southern watersnakes swimming on top of Oconee river. Total trip zone across two sides: brownouts in the sequence of events, dubby fadeouts, and bright jump cuts in space. Teases of cartoon barrlehouse tickling on the keys of a farmhouse piano and tape melt psychedelia. The recording session in Athens, Georgia was a total "CHUGFEST" recalls Frank Hurricane, the Appalachian juggalo folkie king, who joined the session with the Lafayette, Indiana crew. The presence of Hurricane's own "Life is Spiritual" mirth bulworks the record with a muddy, barefoot hippy hopefullness, steadying the log flume through the notcturnal psychic murk toward the holy morning dew. Iraqi-born, canadian sound artist Rita Mikhael aka E-Saggila turns out turbulent rhythms and synth leads in her debut attack for Hospital Productions, following on from releases for Northern Electronics, Bank Records, Opal Tapes and Aught Void. If yr into Hiro Kone and Drew McDowell, this one comes highly recommended.

‘Corporate Cross’ pulls out nine tracks of reticulated percussion, wavey synth melodies, breakcore and ambient washes that map an ancient, byzantine feel onto densely urban sort of post-techno/IDM structures. It’s all less rave-wise than E-Saggila’s releases for Opal Tapes and her own label, Summer Isle, exploring a more narrative based, sound-designer dramaturgy of ideas that takes in the polychromatic burst of ‘Redcloud’, hymnal trance riffs in ‘Replica’, and rolling dubstep on ‘Mouth In Reach’, thru to Synkro-esque half step scenes in ‘For The Butterfly’, and ‘90s cyber-hacker styles in ’Slowland’, with a soaring denouement in ‘Mantis Print’.

As she explains: “this album is a framework of placement and displacement of what I recognize as organic and instinctive. The constructed sounds draw a parallel between primalism and mechanization, where structure and disorder mimic themselves through these titles. a lot of these ideas are based off of the environment I come in contact with and the familiar expression and tone that is set into this album. It's a narration of transparent rhythms and patterns I see as natural, but to the listener is observed as ambiguous. corporate cross scans through the themes of novelty in human and animal, endemic and deterioration, and the sub-systems of our concealed environment.”
