The Criminal Minds - Baptised By Dub

Originally released on White House Records. Remastered from digital masters by Robert Macciochi with full restored cover done by myself. This EP should need no introduction to Ravers as often cited as an Anthem (whatever that means to you, to me that just means classic and good and still worth hearing any day again and again)."Baptised By Dub" was originally on World Beat Records with "Virtual Reality" on the flip side and later licensed to White House Records with other tracks and the totally different but equally awesome Re Baptised By Dub by DJ Halo. This Ravers favourite has never been reissued on vinyl in its original 4 track form. it did make it to a White House Classics series but only Baptised By Dub and not the greatest quality.According to DJ Spatts the DAT's were misplaced in the 90's and only unearthed again in 2014 when I searched the Warehouse. All CD licensed versions on compilations are allegedly a vinyl rip supplied by White House. These official DIGITAL remasters were issued to TCM Records as digital only. This is your first chance to get your hands on what will definitely be the best vinyl reproduction of this music since it's original release in 1992.

11.03.2019

Melbourne party troupe, Animals Dancing return with the labels sixth disc, Psytube; a mind-melting trip from Lyon duo, The Pilotwings.

The synth-heavy house pair, synonymous with the BFDM label channel their digi synth euphoria into trance not trance and acid atmospheres across a four track EP.

From the subtle breaks and pan flute/acid combo of Trance En Aubrac, steady synth flutter of Future Glouglou to the full tilt restless psychedelia of Yakado and cinematic acid stepping Gig in the Ocean, The Pilotwings once again showcase their tongue in cheek nods to the past with production launching into the future.

Claro Intelecto - Forgotten Wasteland

Claro Intelecto returns to Delsin for the first time in two years with an EP that was inspired by the producer's formative experiences of techno and his journey through three decades of electronic music. Across four heavy and otherworldly tracks, Claro Intelecto reflects on the impact of forgotten Manchester club the Thunderdome via industrial-strength beats, bleeps and bass-weight; joins the dots between Skam style experimental hip-hop and glassy-eyed techno futurism ("Sniffer Dogs"); immerses us in heavy electro/techno fusion ("Messages") and offers up some intense, mid-tempo dance floor bliss ("Sirens"). It's another standout outing from one of techno's true cult heroes.

JEAN-LUC - DES LITRES D’ESSENCE

Hailing from different places in western Europe, Luc Bersier, Low Bat, Leonard Prochazka and Ariel Garcia created this vibrant EP. Their synergy tells a story of creativity, freedom in sound and, above all, playfulness. Serious music while similarly not being to earnest.

Their venture evolved into a very original blend of cosmic music, utilizing instruments that fit into the neofolk Krautrock domain, vocal experiments into French chanson territory, infused in Berlinian cosmopolitanism. Expect an exciting minimal wave synth punk orgy, punk definitely being the defining trait underneath these layers of sound.

This is boundless music with attitude, capable of making us drift off and disrupt us in equal measure.

Ewan Jansen - Perfect Strangers EP

We could wax lyrical for days about the music of Ewan Jansen but we’ll leave that for the blog sites and Reddit message boards whose pages his name regularly graces. The Australian producer responsible for seminal 90’s label Red Ember could be seen as an unwitting progenitor of the now well established and flourishing Australian House music scene and his vinyl releases have become highly sought after and frequently exchange hands for triple figures. Appearances on other legendary labels such as Mike Grant’s Moods & Grooves (who released Ewan’s Blueline Summer LP in 2005) and Chez Damier’s Inner Balance. In 2016 Ewan brought Red Ember out of hiatus releasing some solo material that sounded fresher than ever, continuing to push his raw yet musical, authentic house sound. Cut to the start of this year and Jimpster is flicking through Instagram when he stumbles upon a short clip of some work in progress on Ewan’s
profile. Transfixed by the vibe, he contacts Ewan to offer a release on Freerange and we’re now super-proud to present you with the Perfect Strangers EP. Four original tracks showcase Ewan’s impeccable attention to detail in the grooves, sounds and production. With the uptempo, afro-tinged synth jam of Take U Away and the more crunchy, minimal bounce of Logarithm, we find Ewan in pure dance floor mode on the A side. Flipping over we’re treated to Chika Kozo, a rolling groove with an emotive vibe, perfect for a late-night drive through the urban metropolis. Closing out
the EP things get more intimate and introspective on title track Perfect Strangers. Layers of warm pads build upon a punchy house groove whilst a filtered Moog bassline keeps the momentum and brings the low-end energy to the track. Overall Ewan’s sound melds together many sonic worlds, bringing to mind early Morgan Geist, elements of Warren ‘Hanna’ Harris, Black Dog, ART and early 90’s IDM, all put together with love and skill by a master of his trade. Enjoy

SHELVED RECORDINGS 2.1

Following the success of the their debut double 12" release, SHELVED RECORDINGS return with part one of a two part set.
2.2 will follow (the sleeve will ship with Part 1)

Returning to a brief but very fruitful period in electronic music production, Shelved Recordings exists to look back to the golden age of the remix, with a clear view of the future it imagined.

Artists who were steered towards maverick producers, with a view to changing the rules, to re-defining the terms of what modern music should and could be.
Pioneering techniques, over-dubs and an exploratory period of pop production, resulted in many lost dub versions and mixes. Mixes, which invariably were left on the shelf, deemed too 'out there' by the bosses of the the hedonistic label managers who commissioned them.

Carefully reconstructed and rebuilt lost classics from someone who was there the first time around !

Various - SUMMER SELECTIONS ONE

With such a raft of quality music coming across the Summer from NuNorthern Soul, we thought we would put together an EP of some of the tracks featuring across the upcoming months...

We have taken our favourite tracks from various digital releases and present them on one vinyl 12" EP On the A side we take Nick J Smith's 'Waves Take Hold' from the Waves Take Control EP'
'Waves Take Hold', is a kaleidoscopic, life-affirming exercise in late 1980's style Italian Dream House, that's so warm and rush-inducing that it's likely to get the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention.
Full of ricocheting drum machine hits, sun-bright lead lines, elongated chords and rich bass, it sounds like it was tailor-made to soundtrack sunrise in Rimini...

Bonnie & Klein 'Ocean Leap' taken from the Ocean Leap EP
There's a deeper and dreamier feel to the 'Ocean Leap' track, whose bubbly melodic motifs and synthesizer panpipe flourishes offer subtle nods towards 1980's Greek new age electronic composers such as Vangelis Katsoulis amd Dimitris Petsatakis.
Bonnie & Klein's synthesizer-heavy melodiousness comes accompanied by dub disco strength bass and undulating, off-kilter drums, but retains the rush-inducing bliss associated with the pioneering work of their Greek predecessors.

AA is given up to the 10 minute + track from Mirage: 'Endless Ocean' taken from their Reflections of the Sun EP.

'Endless Ocean' is a slowly building masterpiece. After a hushed, atmospheric opening, the track bubbles away on waves of hazy bongo beats, lapping water sounds and seductive chords before rushing skywards in a swarming swirl of trance-style synthesizer lead lines, echoing electronics and picturesque piano motifs.

Black Spirituals - Black Access/Black Axes

Like the resonant African-American traditions that long precede them, the Black Spirituals are equal parts choreographed and improvisational, containing simultaneously measuredly deliberate and frenetically urgent sonicities.

True to name, the Black Spirituals evoke and produce a Black spirituality in the sonorous tradition of Black flight calling us to follow the North Star and any and all other pathways to freedom. It's the choreographed and synergistic spontaneity and improvisation with clear inspirations drawn from jazz traditions, indigenous African drumming, and anti/de-colonial musico-theological and ritualistic traditions across the Afro diaspora; and it's an expression that constitutes the kind of musical fugitivity most organically and innately produced by Black Americans in our 'post-emancipation' captive state. It's a music for music's sake, and it's a feverish cathartic expression of freedom dreams with true liberatory capacity.

The Black Spirituals, like their musical forebearers, are fugitive planners enacting, per Harney & Moten, 'ruptural and enraptured' soundscapes and offering a space of refuge within which enlightenment can be understood and, thus, enacted.

But this is not music alone. The Black Spirituals are a transdisciplinary and genre transcendent epistemic framework that exists both in itself and in complement with other artists. Black Access Black Axes is a project expressing Black vernacularity as a solo-duetting avant-garde musical technology driven by clear need to contain and articulate both the world in which we live and the dire need to flee and imagine and create another. The album's core are the drone-like meditative frequencies recalling an ever-present sounding alarm: a state of emergency, an alarm signaling the need for and actualisation of Black escape, a Black articulation of futurity only accessible through distortions and conversing-dueling guitar and drum.

Though this is the last joint project with which Zachary James Watkins & Marshall Trammell will bless us, the beauty in their music is their dynamism together as well as apart. So/but before we continue to be blessed with their respective solo workings (made evident in this and all the group's work), this is an invitation to revel in this deeply affective creation born out of their wellspring of love for Black people and our deservingness of freedom. From my head to my DNA, I felt this. I hope you will, too.

Infoline / Audioguide - Infoline Global

(12"+ Poster)

What is Infoline Infoline indicates new content components via an intuitive union of several media forms. We see the medium record/cover as a placeholder that does not contain enough information or limits itself only to the audio (music). The goal is to break open that standard by collaborating with designers, artists and musicians to find the improbable (formula) within the limit (format). The label Infoline is built on that collaboration because via that connection the network of possibilities grows and the intensification becomes more complex. OREN AMBARCHI, MARK FELL, WILL GUTHRIE, SAM SHALABI - Oglon Day

Oglon Day is the debut release from the quartet of Oren Ambarchi, Mark Fell, Will Guthrie and Sam Shalabi. Though Ambarchi had previously worked on separate occasions with Fell and Guthrie, the two days the four musicians spent together in a London studio producing this LP was their first meeting as a quartet, preceding an acclaimed performance at the 2016 Masāfāt Festival. Coming from diverse backgrounds and concerns, the four musicians have created an effortless blend of their seemingly disparate approaches, carving out a musical space that gives equal weight to Ambarchi’s physically affecting guitar explorations, Fell’s stuttering electronic pulse, Guthrie’s virtuosic drumming and Shalabi’s psychedelic oud improvisations. Oglon Day is an inspired meeting of the acoustic and the electronic, the composed and the improvised, the human and the machine, the austere and the joyous. Quite unlike anything else in the four musicians’ respective back catalogues, it also offers a surprisingly accessible point of entry for any listener so lucky as to be unfamiliar with their work

You: Could you send me an email instead, please Thank you.
Hundert: hang on a sec got te press release right here fer ya
Hundert: *the lol
Hundert: anyhow here goes
Hundert: With its third release, hundert is diving further into the technological maelstrom that has slowly transformed our perception of reality and what this thing called life is. DJ OK's "Private Messages" poses some crucial questions about how we find, form and maintain relationships in our day in age. Fittingly, its sound was forged seemingly everywhere and nowhere at once: classic New York-leaning deep house vibes meet UK-inspired gunshot sounds and the frantic grooves of contemporary outernational club music, Balearic feels converge with the slick sound palette of our digital environments. "Private Messages" is as immersive as an ever-refreshing newsfeed, but just as emotional and real as the next person checking in on you via iMessage. DJ Ja and DJ Nein's third effort can be as much enjoyed in the sweat-drenched physicality of a crammed club as it may serve as the perfect soundtrack for when you are home alone, connected with the entire world via a dimly-lit interface. These four tracks will touch your heart like a Spectre Attack would infiltrate the device you are using right now. And you know that it is unpatchable. All hardware problems are.

Cambridge-based beat-scientist Filter Dread presents the third release on the Tech Startup catalog, TS000003. Inspired by laboratories across the street from his studio, the four tracks take motifs from the genres of jungle, hardcore, and grime, and teleport them to alien dimensions.

The record kicks off with Rainforest, a track which mutates grime hammer kicks and classic jungle drum-rolls. The following track, Blizzard, flows like metallic ooze with its cold, cybernetic percussion and liquified pads. Tripping Up dishes a devastating jungle-tekno sequence with crushing snares and a sinister bassline. RX-4 Real brings the release to a close, bubbling and percolating with its reverb-soaked stabs and glitched out beats.

North Manc Beds - GazOhmEater EP

The NMB Allstars have been part of the SKAM family for nearly twenty years. Initially as DJs then as producers, they beguiled us with their dub-informed rhythms and caustic beats. When they first put their Bug EP together at the back end of 2001, we discussed what might come next – a plan for five 12” EPs before an album, not realising it would take fifteen eighteen years to get to number five... but, here it is, the 5th of 5, NMB005 the GazOhmEater EP.
The pattern of releases has played with titles and logos of UK nationalised industries – Bolton8 (002) referenced Altern-8 and the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, NWH20 (003) North West Water. and Mancweb (004) drew on Manweb, a local electricity provider. For this final EP Acid and Gas are the go-to aesthetic narcotics. Along the way the 12” series had guest appearances from Meam, Made and Pendle Coven, part of the NMB extended crew.
These days neither of the two founder members locate themselves in urban situations, preferring to retreat to the hills spending hours on the moors of the Pennines. Even these landscapes are punctuated by infrastructure,
be it pylons, reservoirs or tunnels, and the resonant hums, filtered through peat bog and horizontal rain can be sensed in these new tracks put together slowly over the last seven years. NMB stated from the beginning that their “output was not controlled by time” - how right they were.... They have said the album should be ready in 2028.

Fabio & Grooverider - 30 Years of Rage Part 3 (2xLP)

Fabio & Grooverider have been at the forefront of UK dance music for over 3 decades. This is the roots of their story told through music.

The 2 London DJ's are part of the DNA of the global Jungle / D&B movement and they have remained relevant, cutting edge, authoritative and essential to this truly underground art-form since it's inception. RAGE could arguably be the ground zero of Jungle. The party was started at London's cavernous Heaven club by Fabio & Grooverider in 1988, at the height of Acid House fever that was making it's way up and down the motorways, slip-roads, fields and warehouses of the M25 and further beyond every weekend, troubling the nation, the police, your parents and the press as it went. RAGE was a different beast, it certainly channelled some of that Acid energy but pitted it against the new and exciting sounds emanating from Belgium, Amsterdam, Detroit, Sheffield, Essex and Hackney and in turn created a new style, a new sonic attitude and energy in the process. Rumbling bass-lines, narcotic synth rushes and roughly chopped and sped-up breakbeats all merged into a style that we now know as Jungle. Nothing like this had been heard before, this was a brand new style and it was coming out of London's West End and Fabio & Grooverider were the people firmly behind it.

RAGE is approaching its 30th anniversary. Its sonic and cultural legacy is still being felt today, Fabio & Groove are still shutting down raves and festivals every weekend all over the world with their superior DJ sets and musical knowledge guided by their pioneering spirit. This musical selection you hold in your hands, the first of 4 parts, sees them delve into their prodigious memories and record boxes to select a true musical representation of the very beginning of one of the UK's most unique and influential musical movements of the last 50 years. Across 4 x 2 x 12"s compilations we are taken on a journey through the sounds of RAGE, accompanied with personal track by track notes from Fabio & Grooverider. Music from London, Detroit, Sheffield and beyond features, with tracks such as 33 1/3 Queen's rave banger 'Searchin' sitting shoulder to shoulder with Debbie Malone's underground classic 'Rescue Me' and sublime Detroit Techno from Yennek (aka Kenny Larkin), whose 'Serena X' features. Kapitan - Alaska

Kapitan

Alaska

12inchMTLP006
Malka Tuti
21.06.2019

Kapitan is Dori Sadovnik, half of the groundbreaking dancefloor-scorching duo Red Axes.

In his debut solo LP Alaska, Kapitan takes us on a journey into the deepest realms of his inner psyche. Through his modular synth experimentations, his analogue approach for synthesis and organic instruments he created an lp that is both personal and outgoing, fresh and nostalgic at the same time.

Weaving samples from his non-stop traveling schedule as half of one of todays top dance acts, playing guitars, drum machines and synthesizers, the album feels contem- porary and timeless, like it could have been written at anytime in the past 30 years and still feel relevant than ever, echoing Mort Garcon’s modular experimentations as well as early Air music.

Minny Pops - Sparks In A Dark Room

Factory Benelux presents a new deluxe 2xCD edition of Sparks In A Dark Room, the second studio album by Dutch electronic group Minny Pops, originally
released by Factory Benelux in May 1982.
Formed in Amsterdam in 1978 by vocalist Wally Van Middendorp, Minny Pops took their name from the primitive Korg drum machine which propelled their austere, post-punk rhythms and provocative live performances. An early association with Factory Records in Manchester saw the band work with producer Martin Hannett, share stages with Joy Division and New Order, and become the first Dutch band to record a BBC radio session for John Peel.
Sparks In A Dark Room is their second studio album, originally issued on Factory Benelux in May 1982. Self-produced by the group, the album was recorded without a guitarist and as a result sounded unusually polished and layered, its smooth sequencers and motorik rhythms often redolent of Moroder, Kraftwerk and Cabaret Voltaire. Bonus tracks include the non-album singles Time and Een Kus, as well as demo tracks and an EP by instrumental splinter project Smalts.
This new edition on FBN also adds a bonus disc featuring an entire live performance (13 tracks), recorded at Amsterdam Melkweg on 7 April 2012 on their 30th anniversary tour, with original members Wally Van Middendorp, Wim Dekker and Pieter Mulder joined by new guitarist Mark Ritsema.

Mort Garson - Mother Earth’s Plantasia (SBR 15 Years) LP

In the mid-1970s, a force of nature swept across the continental United States, cutting across all strata of race and class, rooting in our minds, our homes, our culture. It wasn’t The Exorcist, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, or even bell-bottoms, but instead a book called The Secret Life of Plants. The work of occultist/former OSS agent Peter Tompkins and former CIA agent/dowsing enthusiast Christopher Bird, the books shot up the bestseller charts and spread like kudzu across the landscape, becoming a phenomenon. Seemingly overnight, the indoor plant business was in full bloom and photosynthetic eukaryotes of every genus were hanging off walls, lording over bookshelves, and basking on sunny window ledges. The science behind Secret Life was specious: plants can hear our prayers, they’re lie detectors, they’re telepathic, able to predict natural disasters and receive signals from distant galaxies. But that didn’t stop millions from buying and nurturing their new plants.

Perhaps the craziest claim of the book was that plants also dug music. And whether you purchased a snake plant, asparagus fern, peace lily, or what have you from Mother Earth on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles (or bought a Simmons mattress from Sears), you also took home Plantasia, an album recorded especially for them. Subtitled “warm earth music for plants…and the people that love them,” it was full of bucolic, charming, stoner-friendly, decidedly unscientific tunes enacted on the new-fangled device called the Moog. Plants date back from the dawn of time, but apparently they loved the Moog, never mind that the synthesizer had been on the market for just a few years. Most of all, the plants loved the ditties made by composer Mort Garson.

Few characters in early electronic music can be both fearless pioneers and cheesy trend-chasers, but Garson embraced both extremes, and has been unheralded as a result. When one writer rhetorically asked: “How was Garson’s music so ubiquitous while the man remained so under the radar?” the answer was simple. Well before Brian Eno did it, Garson was making discreet music, both the man and his music as inconspicuous as a Chlorophytumcomosum. Julliard-educated and active as a session player in the post-war era, Garson wrote lounge hits, scored plush arrangements for Doris Day, and garlanded weeping countrypolitan strings around Glen Campbell’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” He could render the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel alike into easy listening and also dreamed up his own ditties. “An idear” as Garson himself would drawl it out. “I live with it, I walk it, I sing it.”

But as his daughter Day Darmet recalls: “When my dad found the synthesizer, he realized he didn’t want to do pop music anymore.” Garson encountered Robert Moog and his new device at the Audio Engineering Society’s West Coast convention in 1967 and immediately began tinkering with the device. With the Moog, those idears could be transformed. “He constantly had a song he was humming,” Darmet says. “At the table he was constantly tapping.” Which is to say that Mort pulled his melodies out of thin air, just like any household plant would.

The Plantae kingdom grew to its height by 1976, from DC Comics’ mossy superhero Swamp Thing to Stevie Wonder’s own herbal meditation, Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants. Nefarious manifestations of human-plant interaction also abounded, be it the grotesque pods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers or the pothead paranoia of the US Government spraying Mexican marijuana fields with the herbicide paraquat (which led to the rise in homegrown pot by the 1980s). And then there’s the warm, leafy embrace of Plantasia itself.

“My mom had a lot of plants,” Darmet says. “She didn’t believe in organized religion, she believed the earth was the best thing in the whole world. Whatever created us was incredible.” And she also knew when her husband had a good song, shouting from another room when she heard him humming a good idear. Novel as it might seem, Plantasia is simply full of good tunes.

Garson may have given the album away to new plant and bed owners, but a decade later a new generation could hear his music in another surreptitious way. Millions of kids bought The Legend of Zelda for their Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1986 and one distinct 8-bit tune bears more than a passing resemblance to album highlight “Concerto for Philodendron and Pothos.” Garson was never properly credited for it, but he nevertheless subliminally slipped into a new generations’ head, helping kids and plants alike grow.

Hearing Plantasia in the 21st century, it seems less an ode to our photosynthesizing friends by Garson and more an homage to his wife, the one with the green thumb that made everything flower around him. “My dad would be totally pleased to know that people are really interested in this music that had no popularity at the time,” Darmet says of Plantasia’snew renaissance. “He would be fascinated by the fact that people are finally understanding and appreciating this part of his musical career that he got no admiration for back then.” Garson seems to be everywhere again, even if he’s not really noticed, just like a houseplant.

Biography:

Marie e le Rose is a sound artist, music/art therapist, sound researcher and multi-instrumentalist based in Florence, Italy. She has releases on labels such as Forrest Hill Records, No Problema Tapes, Time Released Sound, Laverna, Zamzam Records, Further Records, Chemical Tapes, Phinery, Hylé Tapes and more, with many monikers for her varying concepts (Marie e le Rose, Moon RA, MonoLogue).

She has performed at festivals and venues such as Festival Sons Libérés (Bruxelles), Festival La Centrale (Bordeaux), FreeQ (Genova), MamBO museum (Bologna), Galerie Hus (Paris) and Ableton LOOP (Berlin). Her installations have taken place at Pecci museum (Prato), Palazzo Reale (Milano) and more…

"I am a musician and in this moment of my life I am dealing with pain and all that follows… This is an album based on the concept of physical pain, its title taken from the name of a famous theory about it.

I have attempted to communicate – through the sound synesthesia and its movements — the same sensations and disorientation that we can try in times of difficulty and suffering. However, in every track there is a strong dose of energy and struggle, obtained from the timbre and dynamics of many analog instruments (not least the Buchla at EMS in Stockholm). I also used sounds from acoustic instruments, effects, tapes, Walkmans, reel-to-reel recorders, a modular synth and more…

My aim is to work on the perceptions of the listener, making them participate with the emotions – main actors in the relationship between suffering and struggle." – Marie e le Rose, Florence, 30 May 2018.

Noisia - Outer Edges - 2x12" Release

2x12"

Dutch electronic music trio, Noisia, have announced the release of their long awaited new album, 'Outer Edges' on their own label, Vision. The 18 track album is their first in six years, and the band's second in total.
With a peerless reputation and countless awards under their belts, Noisia have transcended their genre and grown into a phenomenon in their own right. Drum & Bass is at the core of Noisia's sound, but Nik, Martijn, and Thijs's visceral brand has always ventured further.

"It's called Outer Edges because it's us exploring the outer edges of what Noisia, the three of us together, is. It's about the idea that all the songs are little islands that we take to their individual edge... They're all like expeditions to far sides. That doesn't mean that it's everything; it's just that every song, if it goes in a certain direction, we've taken it all the way there. There's no real concessions, we haven't been super DJ- or radio-friendly at all and we've done no collaborations or hardly any vocals on the album." - Noisia

Versalife aka Boris Bunnik is one of the most respected producers in electro, recording for many of the truly great Dutch labels including Delsin, Clone, Rush Hour and Frustrated Funk as well as cutting edge imprints like Brokntoys, Shipwreck and Transcendent. Bunnik has toured Versalife live extensively across the world, as recently featured on Boiler Room. Bunnik now presents his debut release for 20/20 Vision as the label continues it's path into the world of pure electronic music. 'Machine Life' immediately stood out as one of those rare killer club cuts that works it's way into a wide range of DJ boxes, simple but massively effective. 'M05' returns to more classic sounding Versalife electro with complex layers of synths, strings and analogue squelch all held together by a solid bass hook. On the flip side Bunnik shows off his pedigree in producing Detroit influenced string laden beautiful music with the EP rounded off by 'Axion', a heavier trip to the dark side.

Desert Sound Colony - Zenome Archetype EP

After providing Touch From A Distance's inaugural release not even one year ago, the mighty Desert Sound Colony is returning to Nick Höppner's label for another round on the bouncy bounce, his bubble gun at the ready! It's no exaggeration to say Desert Sound Colony smashed it on all fronts in the past year: He put himself firmly on the map by pushing his own label Holding Hands with a fresh take on beloved tropes of UK club music. His number of gigs also increased dramatically and he popped his Panorama Bar cherry earlier this year at the first TFAD label night, where he unleashed a joyous assault of beats and bass whipping the crowd into a frenzy. His new EP for Touch From A Distance is an algamation of all the good stuff we've come to expect from the London based DJ and producer: Opener „Zenome Archetype“ is a retrofuturistic joyride across mountainous bass and funked up syncopation. „Taking It Out For A Rip“ then couples a thumping 4/4-UKG-Beat with a cheeky vocal sample, while „Walrus Rodeo“ slows down the tempo and cranks up the folly for a slice of weird dancefloor fun Desert Sound Colony does so well. „Al Gore Rhythmic“, a collaboration with Guava, closes the EP channeling classic 2-Step and golden era HipHop vibes.

ARTIFICIAL MONDAY - ILLUSIONS OF IDENTITY LP

ARTIFICIAL MONUMENTS was an all-stars dark minimal / synthpop project from Copenhagen, originally formed by PATRICK RINGSBORG (MOTH, CHAINSAW EATERS, LITTLE BOY LOST, ECHO PEOPLE ET AL.) JOHANNAH JØRGENSEN (METRO CULT) AND KIM WOLF ANDERSEN (MOTH, CHAINSAW EATERS ET AL.). They were inspired by bands like Iron Curtain, Yazoo, Neon Judgement, Eleven Pond and Turquoise Days. Active between 2013 and 2015 only, the group disbanded due to Johanna’s health problems, leaving their debut album ‘Illusions of Identity’ on the cutting board. But it was posthumously finished over the next four years with the help of an incredible array of fellow artists from the new wave of post punk, who contributed their talents to the completion of the album: SALLY DIGE, ZOSIA HOŁUBOWSKA (MALA HERBA, PRISON, HÄNDE), INA NOIRE & LISA LØEBEKKEN (TECHNE), SOFIE JACOBI, CECILIA WÖRLÉN (PRISON) AND CHRISTOFFER BAGGE (METRO CULT, TOTEM).

ILLUSIONS OF IDENTITY is an awesome minimal synth pop album, as simple as that. Being crafted with the help of so many skillful people who spilled their talents into the melting pot, nothing but a masterpiece could come out of this project. We are proud to finally bring it to you on a limited, hand numbered, TRANSLUCENT BLUE VINYL EDITION OF 275 COPIES, housed in a matt finish sleeve with printed inner sleeve (lyrics and credits) and including a download code. The download features two additional demo versions not on the vinyl.

Galya Bisengalieva - EP Two

Galya Bisengalieva

EP Two

12inchNOMAD002
NOMAD
05.07.2019

Award-winning Kazakh/British violinist Galya Bisengalieva performs diverse, radical works for
violin and electronics composed by Shiva Feshareki and CHAINES, alongside an excellent Actress
remix included as a digital bonus, in the 2nd EP on her own Nomad Productions label.
The sister to EP One explores mythology and alien landscapes in three parts that see Galya
physically push and electronically distort her violin in a range of unpredictable and captivating
ways, in the process upending cultural preconceptions of the instrument and opening it up to new
stylistic possibilities.
Avant-turntablist Shiva Feshareki supplies a fascinating highlight with ‘Zhora’, where Galya
responds to Shiva’s extended turntable techniques, with the recorded results then cut to dubplate
and used in a duet between violin and turntable. It’s a jagged and arguably unprecedented mix
of keening dissonance and splintered junglism with a gripping focus on the physicality and
resonance of their sound.
Galya’s own ‘Umay’ follows with a necessary contrast to the opener. Taking cues from the titular
goddess of the earth and fertility in the Tengriism religion of the Mongolian and Hunnic empires
-notably a protector of women and children - Galya mounts a lush maelstrom of whirling strings
and guttural, ragged low end that literally reflects the goddess’ mythical, radiant solar form with 60
layers of electronically manipulated violin drones interwoven with virtuosic passages and driven
by a “drum machine” built from recordings of a Shankobyz (a reed-based Kazakh instrument).
Following her 2018 great debut for Slip, Chaines brings an otherworldly nature to the plate with
‘Claycorn’, a fantastic piece teeming with insectoid detail and chattering, characterful electronics
which draws much influence from the animation of award-winning Czech game developer
Amanita Design. Together with the gasping, hoofing machine rhythms and dreamlike wind-tunnel
dynamic of Actress’ ’26 Drones’ remix of ‘Tulpar’ from the first EP, it all adds up to one of the most
thrilling expositions of new violin music we’ve heard this year.

VEIL OF LIGHT - INFLICT LP

Exactly two years after their latest Front Teeth LP, the Zürich-based duo VEIL OF LIGHT is back with a new album called Inflict which will be out May 10 on Avant! Records. This is their fourth full-length and their industrial-tinged synth-based post-punk keeps on getting better, making Inflict their strongest release to date. In these eight new cuts you'll hear how their sound has gotten heavier, bulkier, even more beat-driven. Tracks like So Hard and Holy Wars display drums pounding like noises from a rusty machinery, synths on You Done Me Wrong and Fact2019 they’re so sharp they can slice through your skin, Europe and Animal Instinct feature melodies from the abandoned industrial district of your ghost town. We could go on but you are probably aware of what these two Swiss are all about, and if you don’t you'll know the Veil Of Light when you face it. Artwork by Basel-based visual artist and photographer Samuel Trümpy. Limited edition LP on orange vinyl!

For the record this modern trend of wiping is collective madness. I never apply any man-made materials to my anus. A permanent layer of fecal matter is perfectly natural and healthy!

Amish Boy follows-through with another payload of inventive, grinding techno. Indeed sat next to some high-profilers, his music brutally exposes rigid parameters that some never venture beyond. Still, simple functionality is a beloved corner-stone of dance music and rightly so. Pointless assertions aside, 'Nice Try Donnie' is another six tracker and part two of 'Laika Test Project' with the sleeves of both records combining to make the full artwork.

Amish Boy is a new artist in the sense that his first original release was in October last year, however he's been balls-deep in music and parties for twenty years but happens to be one of those rare talents that don't shout "look at me!".

Barker & Baumecker - Turns

Turns

12inchOSTGUTLP24
Ostgut Ton
25.11.2016

Barker & Baumecker take Turns from techno, bass, breaks, and experimental terrain with their second album on Ostgut Ton.
Sam Barker and Andreas Baumecker's lives have always revolved around different kinds of music. That's partly why their productions as Barker & Baumecker are more unpredictable, harder to pin down than what you might expect from a label borne out of a techno club. And while their music is clearly built for dancing, listening to it reveals a deep love and respect for many forms of electronic music - bonding over more experimental dance forms is what brought them together in the first place. Imagining their music at any decent club, but disrupting the flow on the floor is what brings us to their second album Turns. An amalgamation of their unique musical minds, transcending electronic music genres and styles, while further developing and refining the Barker & Baumecker sound aesthetic.
Barker & Baumecker first met via their day jobs back in 2008, when the former was a booking agent and the latter was the booker for Berghain. Baumecker was instrumental in encouraging Barker and his colleagues at LittleBig booking agency to start Leisure System - first a party and now also a record label championing irregular dance music. Shortly after, their friendship - sparked by a kinship in musical curiosity - became a partnership in production. Now, with two EPs, an album, and almost 20 remixes under their belts, Barker & Baumecker continue to steadily explore and reshape their shared electronic musical interests, especially in techno, bass, breaks, and experimental terrain.
Baumecker's been a clubber pretty much from day one in his hometown of Frankfurt am Main. As he recalls, 'Frankfurt has a really good history in club music. There was a party series called Techno Club at the No Name venue, which began in 1984. It was an American gay club, basically. It was super tiny, but really happening. I went there for the first time in '86 when I was 18.' As the DJ nd_baumecker, he cut his teeth in the '90s playing house at Wild Pitch Club - an early party thrown by Playhouse/Robert Johnson founder Ata and Heiko MSO - and left-field techno, electro, and Warp-influenced sounds in Mannheim with Move D and D-Man. A regular guest at Berghain's predecessor club, Ostgut, he moved to Berlin in 2004 after an invitation to become a resident at the newly opened Panorama Bar inside Berghain. 12 years later, he's still a resident there, as well as a frequent DJ flyer worldwide.
Barker started out as a producer in Brighton's tight-knit experimental community, where, as he explains, 'it was an open-minded scene. Music as a platform for self-expression and originality were really the only judgment markers. Authenticity is Barker & Baumecker take Turns from techno, bass, breaks, and experimental terrain with their second album on Ostgut Ton.
As he recalls, "Frankfurt has a really good history in club music. There was a party series called Techno Club at the No Name venue, which began in 1984. It was an American gay club, basically. It was super tiny, but really happening. I went there for the first time in '86 when I was 18." As the DJ nd_baumecker, he cut his teeth in the '90s playing house at Wild Pitch Club - an early party thrown by Playhouse/Robert Johnson founder Ata and Heiko MSO - and left-field techno, electro, and Warp-influenced sounds in Mannheim with Move D and D-Man. A regular guest at Berghain's predecessor club, Ostgut, he moved to Berlin in 2004 after an invitation to become a resident at the newly opened Panorama Bar inside Berghain. 12 years later, he's still a resident there, as well as a frequent DJ flyer worldwide.
Barker started out as a producer in Brighton's tight-knit experimental community, where, as he explains, "it was an open-minded scene. Music as a platform for self-expression and originality were really the only judgment markers. Authenticity is what we were looking for in those parties." But his move to Berlin in 2007, as part of the LittleBig team, and his subsequent exploration of DJ culture offered a new dimension to his musical philosophy: "The skill of DJing was something I had a lot of pleasure learning about. I was trainspotting DJs for the first few years. Music as a more communicative tool, this kind of, 'hey, let's all find a common ground,' - as opposed to, 'you can understand me or not, I don't care,' - didn't really make sense to me before Berlin."
While Baumecker had always thought of himself as a DJ, it was right around the time he met Barker that he bought his first synth from then-Ostgut Ton label manager Nick Höppner. "But then it went really fast," he explains, I bought a lot of stuff in a really short amount of time." With Baumecker having caught the bug, Barker readily admits that they're both hardware lovers heavily into technology and machinery. But while they own some classics, "most of the studio is under five years old." As Andreas reveals, they "want to create a new sound, and with the old machines it's been done." If you peek into the small studio they share with Höppner, there's a huge collection of synths, drum machines and all manner of gear. While Baumecker now has an impressive collection of Moog effects boxes, Barker has brought in several racks of modular synths.
While their usual aim is only to have fun and escape from "real life," they will admit to a theme or two. Talking about the title of the album, Barker explains, "the two of us have had quite a lot of ups and downs since the last record, and when you're in a collaboration where you only work together in real-time, in person, both people need to be in the right frame of mind." Baumecker adds, "Turns also had something to do with the tracks - almost every one turns towards the middle." The album also turns on the middle track of seven, a short interlude called "Technogate". "It's actually (the sound) of the gate right by our studio," Barker divulges.
But "Technogate" wasn't the only inspiration for Turns. "The title "Turnhalle" is German for a gymnasium or a sports hall," Barker explains about the album's fifth track. "And we are referring to Berghain," Baumecker notes wryly. Barker continues: "We checked every track out in the club, but "Turnhalle" we recorded playing back through the Berghain soundsystem. During the first two minutes, we tried to recreate the effect of ascending the staircase into the club." And while none of the tracks on Turns are merely functional, Barker & Baumecker do, of course, envision them in the club. "It's what I wish people would play at a certain time on Mornday morning, or sometime in the afternoon on Sunday," Baumecker explains. "There are certain periods in Berghain where I think it's really necessary to bring people down again and not keep them on the same vibe for six hours. I think something like this would interrupt that, and you can move on from there again." Tracks that mark a turn in a set, then.
There's nothing typical about any of these tracks, but they each share a clean aesthetic and sound palette with a sense of depth and compositional purpose. The ambient intro of album opener "Senden" morphs into a Reichian flow. "Encipher & Decipher"'s low-end drums weigh down dreamily melodic synths. "Club Entropicana" reduces rhythm and sound to machine signals, akin to Raster-Noton's starkness. Both "Turnhalle" and "Nocturnal" incorporate trance euphoria with breakbeats but in different ways, while closer "Statik" has a deliciously slippery garage pulse guiding it through a journey towards house bliss. You never know where they'll draw from next, but Turns feels like Barker & Baumecker are expanding and refining their own musical dialect. Like most of the music they're both drawn to, it's thoughtful, rich, and ever evolving - but always and completely committed to the club.

Kamikaze Space Programme - Dead Skin Cells

British-born, Berlin-based electronica producer Kamikaze Space Programme delivers his long-awaited debut album ‘Dead Skin Cells’ for Osiris Music. It’s the sound of eight years of the acclaimed project reaching its zenith, via releases on leading labels likes Mote-Evolver, WNCL Recordings and Mord, and through regular sets at the likes of Berghain and Tresor.

This bold new record mirrors decay of the physical world and the human form through its jarring sound palette and tense atmospheres. It’s a rebirth of sorts, with the title a reference to shedding skin — as KSP has done with his previous aliases. Combining his roots in jungle and dub (as Raiden and Dot Product) with the diverse textures of the contemporary techno diaspora and his skills as a found sound magpie and foley artist, it makes for a riveting, deeply nuanced listen.

‘Skin Cells’ begins with distorted synth buzzes trading places with haunted, heavily processed samples and thundering kicks. ‘Sparks’ channels taut jungle breakbeats, pitched down to a more chugging tempo, while menacing D&B screeches buzz through the track. ‘Dust’ teases DMZ style dubstep tension, while ‘Rain’ shows his mastery of sound design and field recording in a stunning ambient interlude. ‘Insomnia’ reaches for glitchy digi dub in the vein of The Bug with some cinematic undertones, leading to the brutalist sonic architecture of ‘Crumbs’ with its crunching breaks and rasping tones.

‘Derelict’ is the album’s most direct nod to his junglist past, the ghosts of hardcore imbued through blasts of chainsaw bass, dissected breaks and haunting pads. ‘Grey Clouds’ bathes you in thick swathes of ethereal pads and plucked, incessant bass before ‘EF5’ delivers a militant glitch-heavy onslaught. ‘An Empty Sky’ closes the album in apocalyptic fashion, with crunching bass pressure juxtaposed with graceful, filmic chord progressions.

The result of all of this is an album that feels at once uniquely London while perfectly contemporary to the Berlin scene, and perhaps a none-more-perfect sonic encapsulation of the continuing reciprocal dialogue between the two cities. Most of all, it’s the sound of a sonic excavator hurtling towards the top of his game, in perfect control of every granule of sound therein.

PESSIMIST & KARIM MAAS - PESSIMIST & KARIM MAAS

For his first full-length since his self-titled 2017 debut on Blackest Ever Black, Pessimist links with longtime associate Karim Maas for twelve untitled tracks of fearsomely well-executed, paranoid, dub-fissured hip-hop, sinister ambient textures and voidal techno pressure.

Forget dnb…this is a downer than downtempo excursion, deep and dread, with low-slung, blunted breakbeats and weapons-grade sub-bass caught up in whirlpools of dissolve and decay and baleful, insinuating drone. It fully conquers territory that previous Pessimist and Maas solo productions have only hinted at, connecting with the Isolationist/industrial traumascapes of 90s E.A.R./Koner, Main and SAW II, the enveloping neo-noir of Plastikman’s Consumed, the crackle-and-hiss materiality of Rhythm & Sound and Pole. All suffused with a push-the-world-away paranoia and melancholy that feels unique to UK ravers/insomniacs.

Pierre Bastien - Tinkle Twang ’n Tootle

“Pierre Bastien orchestrates his meccano marionettes on Tinkle Twang ‘n Tootle to form the charming imaginative ensemble that’s he’s been known for since the late 80s.

Equal parts composer, inventor, mechanic, and performer - Bastien translates his imagination into instruments and compositions that defy any musical categories. Whether it’s preparing instruments like playing a trumpet underwater or through a kazoo, using belt-driven motors and mechanical components to perform cumbersome yet surprisingly musical operations on traditional instruments and household items, or using a fan to hit the strings of a kundi harp with flowing paper - Bastien’s love for tone, rhythm, noise and harmony is poetically reflected across his quite extensive oeuvre.

Playful and melancholic, the sound sculptures that Bastien invents and plays with are partly inspired by the work of Raymond Roussel, a visionary French author who in the first few decades of the twentieth century wrote a unique form of literature which inspired and guided artists from the surrealist and pataphysical movement and was declared by Michel Foucault as one of structuralism’s founding fathers. On that note, the influence of literature and syntax on Bastien’s work cuts all the way through to the palindromes he uses for his track titles - which, much like his machines, infinitely loop.

True to its adorable title, Tinkle Twang ‘n Tootle is a music box of unfolding whimsical structures, half broken rhythms, detuned harmonies, and fantastical sound collages that evoke a childlike sense of wonder and an urge to explore the spaces in between the sounds.”

Titus 12 - Summon Luxo / Silly Youth

We were very proud to release Titus 12's debut physical release early last year, and we are just as proud to present his second ZamZam. Longtime host of Ujima 98 FM's Subsession radio show out of Bristol, and the hand behind new cassette label Limbo Tapes, Pete Hazell is well-known in his city as a purveyor of deep, eclectic, bass-centric music of many hues and shades... his myriad influences alchemically combine into a signature sound that is as unmistakeable as it is difficult to pin down. In a world of cookie-cutter soundworlds Titus 12 conjures something truly personal and magical and makes it sound effortless. Summon Luxo' opens with raw vinyl archaeology, managing to wed a humid, plaintive, layered vocal chop to a sultry boom bap riddim, with so much swing and space you'll swoon under its strange power. Titus 12 says, "Summon Luxo came about after falling in love with a recording of an Ethiopian funeral song, and the suggestion that the singer might be summoned to a funeral from many miles away, because of the calibre of his lament." Intertwining melodies, sophisticated vocal manipulations, deeply elastic bass and ethereal ragga flavor complete an absolutely unique and captivating tune you'll want to rewind again and again.Silly Youth' fuses distorted french cafe melodica vibes to rugged sound tape boasts and smoked-out 140 swagger with Titus' signature reverb-filled spaces, 808 bass and aquatic claps for another singular journey through the mind of a true original. Various - Eye of the Minotaur - Collage 001

Soft Machine is a surreal wander through the mystical sonic forest. A vision curated and designed by Chicago native Justin Aulis Long. A Cyclopian point of view while gazing through a wide lensed scope, which exists in the liminal spaces where light meets dark and angelic forces bath in the sludge and stardust of unfiltered eroticism.

Eye of the Minotaur - collage 001 is a collection of artists working in varying musical practices that are channeling the solitude of mutantness, strolling through the familiar yet unfamiliar halls of the uncanny, refusing ordinary structures of the mundane, grasping the cold humor of cynicism, basking in the dichotomy of cosmos and chaos, and invoking the energies of Eris and Eros.

Setting the ground is Ciarra Black, a Berlin based New Yorker who makes no apologies for her bare knuckled soundscapes. DuPont Street is a ritualistic unification of discordant entities that summons visions of Pazuzu (lord of the demons) and Inanna (goddess of love) fornicating beneath The Tree of Life. Razor edged synthesizers slice through the atmosphere with the precision of an avenging angel’s flaming sword, while a psychedelic drum code activates ritual movement of the body.

As the needle passes beyond the next threshold it is met by a towering totem, bristling with the illuminated light of the sonic astral plane. Erected from the foundational matter that birthed the Detroit electro punk sound, Eyes Up continues to add to the narrative that is drenched in deranged electronics intuitively mangled in a post punk tradition. Dystopian percussive rhythms generate an unorthodox domain where muffled utterances present an aural Rorschach test. Could this be the riddle of the Sphinx, or an ancient spectral being that possesses secret knowledge? Only its creator, Stallone the Reducer, holds the key.

Fixed at the axis of the journey, Perfect Headache Forever, a mystic operating within the DIY spaces of Chicago, levitates on a transcendental mass that is equally melancholic and optimistic. Her voice hosts a strength equal to a pantheon of titans. Armed with a magical electronic musical box, she weaves narratives that are prophetic. Itself Ecstatic is a voyage through a misty soundscape that begins at one point, but ends in a distant other, in accordance with a system of divination.

Gazing into the murky waters of the oracle’s cauldron, Circling Vultures, (a collaborative effort by Justin Aulis Long and Kenneth Zawacki) channel and evoke the spirits of Antonin Artaud and Geroges Bataille. The poet’s voice, engaged in an act of mutilation and self cannibalization, howls while projecting visions of sacred conspiracies, sensations of vertigo while peaking over the edge of the abyss, and the looming weight acquired from the solitude of the Minotaur alone, sitting silently at the center of the labyrinth. Accompanying the mystical bard’s verbal declaration is a triggered mechanized synth that roars with the vitality of Cold War era Wave music, which is then juxtaposed against applications of loose keyboard playing. The artist’s hand is revealed against the calculated actions of machines.

Bringing the document to its finale, Libby Del Barrio, a multi disciplinary artist based in San Antonio, performs a closing ritual in a manner that only she knows. Setting fire to the Elysium Fields while personified as Moze Pray, Del Barrio rejects plastic narratives that aim to pacify. No Tears, is an unapologetic account of life’s feedback loop around the Wheel of Fortune. Sacrificial actions through ceremonial performance reveals a gateway founded on truth and torment. Moze Pray’s ability to combine musical production, poetic vocalization and ritualistic body performance is charged by chaos and amalgamates into a product of pure expression that defies the rose colored filters aiming to conceal harsh realities.

SKINNY PELEMBE - Dreaming is Dead Now

Dub echo, hip-hop lyricism and heavy guitar fuzz are boiled down into a heady, characteristic musical brew.

On “Dreaming Is Dead Now”, multi-talented wonder Skinny Pelembe meditates on grief, heartache, stunted aspirations and fresh possibilities in post-recession Britain. For his debut album, the Johannesburg-born, Doncaster-raised artist weaves together a patchwork of personal and musical touchstones; memories and observations are dreamily laced together, sun-dazzled California folk diced with the murkier corners of the UK dance lineage.

Tipping a hat to West London broken beat as much as My Bloody Valentine, the album was co-produced by Malcolm Catto (of The Heliocentrics, who’s previously worked with Yussef Kamaal, DJ Shadow, and Madlib), who helped to distil down its bounty of ingredients into the record’s distinctive flavour. Tough, tight-programmed rhythms are washed over with fuzzy overtures, and the title track is the product of a studio session with a foundational drum & bass duo (credited under the covert alias of The Bleeding Edge). It’s the rare kind of record where the messy, in-between musical spaces are given a light to shine.

First discovered through the Gilles Peterson- and Brownswoodfounded Future Bubblers programme, Skinny has since made it onto Peterson’s iconic Brownswood Bubblers compilation series, performed and collaborated with fellow Future Bubbler Yazmin Lacey, and been tipped by the likes of Ghostpoet and James Lavelle. Praise has also come from The Observer, The Quietus and Huck, with previous singles “Spit / Swallow” and “I Just Wanna Be Your Prisoner” bumped up onto heavy rotation on BBC 6 Music’s A-List. He’s also been in demand for live sessions with The Vinyl Factory and Worldwide FM, and supported Nightmares on Wax and Maribou State.

Kingdoms
10.09.2018

Building on the already incredible collection of music so far released on Francis Harris' Kingdoms imprint, Emil Abramyan returns with the stunning 'Movement' album. Abramyan is a Brooklyn based composer, musician, and producer, whose work traverses various styles and disciplines. In this release Emil shares his unique perspective by bringing together his conservatory training as a cellist and his love of electronic music and sound design. Having played the cello on every Francis Harris album, Abramyan now expands his repertoire by playing every instrument, including cello, piano, and electronics. Beginning with 'Flightplan', the album lifts off in sublime fashion. Brooding cellos combine with pianos before subtle rhythms unfold and introduce themselves. 'Winter's' skittering rhythm is combined with pizzicato melodies, clicks and modular synth flurries. Showcasing his versatility, 'Foolky' is a more dance floor oriented cut - a highly percussive groove unfolds and carries along a variety of instrumentation. 4_24 also makes use of shuffling, percussive grooves layered with drone sounds, and more of Abramyan's signature cello.'Fever' sees the brooklynite heading in a more obviously ambient direction, building atmosphere with a mixture of close mic'd experimentation, and beautiful choral fragments.Rounding off this release, label boss Francis Harris reworks 'Flightplan', finding new nuances in the sublime atmosphere, and slowly building up to a subtle, understated groove that takes the track to a different place entirely.

Mikhail Chekalin - Ecstatic Lullaby

For Russian electronic music, Mikhail Chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene's establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. His music has been praised by many in the West - from journalists and critics of all kinds to Frank Zappa and Karlheinz Stockhausen, while in Moscow Chekalin's name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign 'pro-Western' aesthetics and up until the end of the 80's wasn't allowed to release his works or travel abroad. This, however, didn't interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial Soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of 'Twenty Moscow Artists' on Malaya Gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed 'light organ'.

However, just like all great artists, Mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. 'I don't have a biography - only a discography' - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. This archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are Chekalin's multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient's precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

Rafael Anton Irisarri - Solastalgia

We find ourselves increasingly in a swell of solastalgia. Day to day, a vision of what might come to pass builds; one dystopian impression at a time. Solastalgia is not a new phenomena however, rather it has haunted us over the cen- turies. Change has never been humanities’ strong suit, but it has been our shadow. The perpetual ruptures in what we know and how we live are an inevitability; time takes no prisoners, no matter how tightly we might grasp things from moment to moment.

It’s here, at this fractious nexus of unpredictability and an absence of control that Rafael Anton Irisarri has created his latest work. Building on the echoes of landscape that guided his previous Room40 editions, Solastalgia imagines that which is not yet known. It traces possible terminus points for futures that many of us will not live to see. Utilising a range of unexpected variables, automations and uncontrolled systems in the creation of the recordings, Irisarri has devel- oped a new approach to his work, seamlessly weaving together intense layers of texture and saturated harmony.

Within these works, distant melodies emerge and in their wake the listeners’ focus shifts again and again. A never ending loop of the unconscious feeding into the conscious is formed. Whilst the skeletal form of pieces such as 'Coastal Trapped Disturbance' might remain, the organic matter that is the body of the music is in a process of persis- tent transformation. These subconscious variations morph the pieces from within. This is a record of sublimation, and dwells in states of transition and becoming.
Recorded in two suites (one released on LP and the other on cassette) , each section is a distorted mirror reflection of the other. Solastalgia stands as a landmark undertaking for Irisarri, it encourages us to remain unsettled and attentive in the moment, and prompts us to listen deeper and imagine what lies beyond or in excess of our expectations.

Rafael Anton Irisarri is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer living in New York. De- scribed by the press as “one of contemporary ambient music’s most celebrated practitioners,” Irisarri's music often has a mournful, elegiac quality where ostinato phrases tap into minimalist ideals while atmospheric layers of effects suggests a more cinematic approach. In all, his compositions are deeply emotive and epic, like a symphony record- ing that’s been rescued from attic entombment after half a century. Irisarri concerts at museums, churches, syna- gogues, and other non-traditional performance spaces explore the physicality of sound. Combining an array of heavy metal bass amplifiers, multiple loudspeaker configurations, synthesizers, bowed guitars, notebook computers, video images, and lighting, Irisarri decontextualize the audience’s relationship to the venue, creating an immersive, otherworldly environment. Irisarri’s recorded works are widely published internationally.

Sabre / Halogenix - Halo Danger / Laika

Repress

In a pretty typical Sabre fashion he's sent us a tune called 'Halo Danger', expectedly what we heard instantly was pure danger and another killer in the works... Now here it is coming your way on the 4th of June 2012. Insane production as ever, huge riff, huge snappy drums, huge low end. It's an instant Dispatch fave for us! We say no more... On the flip we have Sabre's often studio production partner in crime Halogenix briging us something solo, completely creative, fresh and inspiring. His productions are quickly building a reputation and 'Laika' holds no exception!
DJ support is very widespread on this release already coming from the likes of: DJ Marky, Alex Perez, Ant TC1, Jubei, Spectrasoul, Octane & DLR, Klute, Zero T, Rockwell (Ministry of Sound Radio), Lenzman, Icicle (as featured on Rinse19 CD), Ulterior Motive, Skeptical, Hybris, Kasra, Nymfo & Safire.

BASTAKIYA

Bastakiya's Cicadian Cycle Closed

17 years, the cycle of cicadas reborn, opening from membranes in the dirt, a smell rising, silence crushed and surmounted, a hum is new. The power lines move out in unison, some poles tipping, toward a horizon, graying at the edges like smoked gums and fission plants. Bare feet on a long, metal staircase, almost quiet, the skin impressed by the diamond-cut landing, the scent rises up, the first few cicada viscera litter the walkways. A landscape of empty gyms, humidity, bleach smell, janitors clean the shower rooms, rust gathers at the drains, 2 TVs left awake, 5 put to sleep, an elliptical machine is a towel rack, 4 treadmills watch the sun rise with one another, a sweatshirt is reapplied, the glass doors open, drag to a close, the central air conditioning blows the napkins from the common area table, a hum settles on the carpet entrance. The Bastakiya alleys have tiles that once held narrative. Now the ground is black. The ground has always been black. Death is a staircase. The cicadas are buried in the dirt another 17 years. A Bedouin close the refrigerator door in a gas station, half-lit before closing, Coca-Cola permitted during Ramadan because they have traveled so far from home. The membrane regrows, burrowed below the hydrangea bush, Bastakiya rests in peace, the Bedouin lives on forever.

Little Beat Different
28.06.2019

300 Degrees is a solo project by Lithuanian producer Audrius Vaitiekunas dedicated to the sound of classic Roland analogue machines.

After featuring on their last year's Evidence Found No.1 compilation under his IJO alias, Audrius delivers his first album-length release for Little Beat Different.

300 Degrees' lush, drifting chords are delicately hung in space and drawn forward by thrumming acid melodies. As the album travels on, these propulsively beatless visions coalesce into cold, reverb-drenched deep house, dive into dank, slo-mo electro, and perform warmly melancholic echoes of rave and IDM.

Sound-wise the deepest release so far on this label will finally see the light of day in May on digital and cassette tape.

Bouklas - The Groove Chronicles

The Groove Chronicles is the second solo album release of Bouklas and his very first on vinyl.

The album is based mainly on Soul and Funk samples, chopped, flipped and pitched up by Bouklas and filled with his characteristic Boom Bap beats, giving an extra funkiness on this particular work. Bouklas has clearly been influenced by Gramatik on this LP and he took it to the next level by having some strong international guests on board.
The album includes the rapper INTeLL, son of U-God from the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, Mic Bles, a respected underground Hip-Hop MC from California, DJ Groove Sparkz from Lyon, the 3xDMC French Champion, IDA Vice World Champion and official tour DJ of L’Entourloop and the French vocalists, Cam & Nelly. Furthermore, there are featurings from talented local Greek artists, the vocalists Martzi and Alida SoulMama and the Turntablist DJ Moya, one of the best Scratch DJs in Greece.
The Groove Chronicles will be released on vinyl by the label Mind The Wax on May 2019 and includes 12 tracks.
Bouklas has been active on the Hip-Hop scene as an MC and a producer since 2002 with more than 10 independent projects to date. As a producer, Bouklas has collaborated with some of the most important names in the Greek Hip-Hop scene as well as with the rap veteran Masta Ace, Freddie Gibbs and the Grind Mode Cypher.
Furthermore, Bouklas has shared the stage with international artists such as the R.A. The Rugged Man, Dead Prez, Afu-Ra, Freestyle (of Arsonists), Foreign Beggars, Dope D.O.D., Killa Kela and DJ Vadim & Yarah Bravo.

Pingipung and Future Nuggets present Cosima, a Bucharest based artist, with two wonderfully poignant songs. Cosima Opa^rtan is widely known as one half of "Raze de Soare" (Future Nuggets). As a solo artist, she files her music under the genre widow pop - melancholically reaching out to the past and the future in one gesture. She sings like someone addressing a beloved but faraway audience, or a trusted, distant relative who can only be seen through someone else's description. Cosima has a background as an architect which she shifted to designing sonic treatments for various spaces such as sound studios. She is also a founding member of the Queer Night, a series of itinerant parties engaging the local LGBTQ+ community and part of Corp., a Bucharest based platform dedicated to supporting and promoting female & female identified musical talent. "Ploaia" has been co-composed and produced by Ion Dumitrescu, known to all Pingipung afficionados for his 7inch as Ion Din Dorobanti (Pingipung 056) who also runs the never failing Future Nuggets label. On the flip side, the two team up with Horatiu Serbanescu, an artist from the Future Nuggets roster releasing music as "Plevna".

Nonplus Records
02.04.2019

Emerging from the wake of his sold out release with Zehnin Records, Paleman continues his experiments with textural and visceral modular music exploration for his debut 3 track EP for Nonplus Records.

A side 'Sweltering Rain' is a powerful piece of groaning, urgent dance floor minimalism, charging forward with a ritualistic, undulating droid line set against scorched, otherworldly drones. B1 'Cells' opens with scurrying modulated white noise and reverberating cosmic texture patterns set against a monolithic kick drum ostinato. The elegant minimalism develops with radioactive analog synth alarms and stark futuristic vocal glitches as the track barrels forward with momentum.

B2 Titan Vulture explores an undiscovered alien landscape evoking imagery of liquid pools of methane, erupting geysers and swirls of otherworldly elements. It is an absorbing, chugging and captivating piece of textural escapism, evolving as it goes whilst still featuring the elegant and considered minimalistic touch that runs throughout the EP.

This EP sees Paleman returning to the physical dance floor based music he is known for, but undoubtedly reflects strong developments in writing approach, quality of sound and exploration of new techniques. 2019 seems set to be a flourishing year for the young producer.

This one is truly alive everywhere still and all these years later, these new mixes are set to take it as far as Lock Up has ever been before.

Red Rack’em takes his huge, unique wonky approach to a new high with atmospheric synths & breakbeats wrapping around that incredible Bassline. Movin Shadow dons 2 Bad Mice join the party taking us on a massive breakbeat excursion which compliments the original.. new Amen breaks, samples and Bassline’s here! Jerome Hill gets even more ravey with 4 to the floor breaks and new stabs perfectly woven with Lock Up’s familiar vibe. Lady Blacktronika takes us to the Berghain at 5am with a sublime dark techno stormer, whilst Kiwi’s rework is passionately put together paying full respect to the original arrangement. Finally, Nexrotype is unapologetically brutal with the Amens and original euphoric pads, providing us with an epic Jungle workout that would even stun the Aphex Twin.

Alley Version
20.05.2019

Italian electronic music mastermind ABYSSY and the Marseille underground hero DONARRA, share for the ALLEY VERSION's 4th release the split E.P. "CLOSE".

ABYSSY aka Mayo Soulomon has, over the years, released records of great interest for Mathematics, New Interplanetary Melodies and many other labels, marked by Detroit and Chicago influences reworked in his personal complex cut.
DONARRA comes to ALLEY VERSION after two beautiful E.P. for Skylax Records and La Chinerie, and recently spotted with its synth-dark-industrial-punk moniker Cardinal & Nun, on L.I.E.S.

The opening ABYSSY's "Close To Me", an obscure rough track totally jacked with the legendary rhythm sampler E-MU SP1200, is an instant cult.
In the following "Lower Michigan Ave", a hypnotic dark plot of analog synthesizers runs on a leftfield rhythm cut, while a whiny female voice condenses the air.

First track of DONARRA's side, "Nostalgie Futuriste", is a surreal sound voyage where are merged Chicago House and Zen atmospheres.
In the culminating Detroit style banger "Rivières Lumineuses", the trippy movements of percussions and synthetic melodies are pure magic.

Exclusively on limited 12" vinyl.

JASON LETKIEWICZ - THE REFLECTING POOL

Over the last decade, we’ve come accustomed to Jason Letkiewicz releasing material under a dizzying array of aliases, each utilized to explore a different side of his multi-faceted musical persona. Now, some 14 years after he made his recording debut alongside Ari Goldman as Manhunter, Letkiewicz has joined forces with Into The Light Records to release his first album under his real name.

The Reflecting Pool sees Letkiewicz exploring the uncomplicated and uncluttered in the pursuit of pure aural beauty. While his recent album as Opposing Currents was dense, dark, urban and industrial, The Reflecting Pool is stripped back, quiet and melodious. The contrast between the two projects is marked, with The Reflecting Pool drawing more on Letkiewicz’s love of crystalline ambient, slow burn synthesizer soundscapes, early ’80s library music and the kind of obscure electronic new age music that has been a hallmark of Into The Light’s releases to date.

The set’s 12 tracks gently ebb and flow, with Letkiewicz making great use of dusty old drum machines, effects units and a range of vintage analogue and digital synthesizers. It’s a set-up that results in a range of complimentary mood pieces and interludes, from the delay-laden military drums and lilting lead lines of “Out of Body Experiences”, to the drowsy, sunrise bliss of “Sunspot”, the bubbling Tangerine Dream style shuffle of “Mind Awake Body Asleep” and the outer-space atmosphere of “The Kill Fee”.

Throughout, Letkiewicz showcases his seemingly intrinsic grasp of mood, atmosphere and melody. It can be heard within the glacial guitar motifs, occasional beats and elongated chords of “The Reflecting Pool”, the rhythmic bustle of “Numb Drums”, the glassy-eyed melancholia of “Arhythmia” and the cinematic paranoia of “Burning Off The Morning Fog”. It’s also evident amongst the classically beat-less ambient of closing cut “Weightless”, whose alien electronics, effects-laden pulses and opaque chords recall established masters of the genre.

With The Reflecting Pool, Letkiewicz has provided us with a much-needed dose of stress-free musical escapism, at the same time offering hope that in these troubling times, love may still save the day.

ROBOTIKO REJEKTO - COMMUNICATION 87-92

Robotiko Rejekto was created in Frankfurt am Main in 1987 by RaHen and Talla 2XLC. Both musicians already worked together in the early 80's on projects like Axodry, Moskwa TV and other incarnations as part of the "Sound of Frankfurt" scene.

With the mega success of the first single “Rejekto” (1987) released by Techno Drome International / ZYX Records, RaHen and Talla 2XLC were seamlessly able to live up to the earlier success with Axodry. They used on this track some lyrics in Romanian telling a fictional short story about two Romanian musicians: Dumitru Constantin and Andrei Vasile. This was followed by other two top chart singles: "Umsturz Jetzt!" (1988) and “Confusion" (1989). Shortly after, Talla 2XLC quit to concentrate on other projects, however some also in cooperation with RaHen.

For a short period of time, Kurt Ader joined the project and with RaHen produced the album "Cyper Space" (1990) including some new songs together with the previous singles. The misspelling of the album title is attributed to a mistake of the label ZYX Records. “Injection” (1990) and "Hangar 18” (1991) were the chosen singles published to support this album. A couple of other singles, “Density / Pure Control" and “Technology” (1992) came next but unfortunately with not a major success following by a hiatus of the band.

After a long pause, Robotiko Rejekto made a comeback in 2012 to release a new album. Currently formed by Ralf Henrich (aka RaHen) and Ivo Draganac (aka Marco Drago), they continue to work and touring intensely.

"Communication 87-92” is a special selection of classic tracks and remixes from those golden years. Limited edition of 500 copies on double vinyl, gatefold sleeve and exclusive sticker.

Dub-Stuy meets Jahdan Blakkamoore - The Linkage

Brooklyn-based label and sound system collective Dub-Stuy prepares for the summer with a brand new EP alongside Jahdan Blakkamoore, who first appeared on the label’s “Pool Party” single back in 2014 and again in 2017 on Von D’s Wicked Scam EP. This time around Jahdan is front and center, flexing the creativity and versatility that has kept him at the cutting edge of Jamaican music for more than two decades: whether collaborating with hip-hop icons like Smiff-N-Wessun and Snoop Dogg or with global bass providers such as Major Lazer, Liondub and Dutty Artz (who first introduced Jahdan and Dub-Stuy!).

The Linkage EP is a family affair, born after Jahdan and Dub-Stuy connected for a gig in Montreal in December 2018. The energy and vibrations from their performance that night inspired both parties to discuss a new label project. Soon enough, Dub-Stuy had sent Jahdan a pack of dancefloor-minded riddims and beats crafted by in-house producer DJ Madd. Within a few days, Jahdan locked himself up in a studio, writing and recording the five songs that make up the EP in a burst of creativity. Dub-Stuy then enlisted Bay Area based producer Kush Arora to mix the tracks, putting the finishing touches to a showcase of deft songwriting and melody-driven singing that has made Jahdan a favorite of many.

On “Absolutely” and “Properly” Jahdan celebrates the fun and vibes of a good session, switching effortlessly between singing with an irresistible lilt to rapid-fire lyrics against revamps of two timeless dancehall riddims - “Hot Milk” and “African Beat.” The results are surefire party starters! “Sort Out” taps out a syncopated skanking riddim to keep the dance going while the rest of the EP addresses more serious themes with Jahdan reaching for the deeper parts of his range. The hip-hop infused “Round of Applause” reflects on everyday struggles, and the EP’s namesake track “The Linkage” draws for deeper bass as Jahdan calls for unity.

JAMES FERRARO - Requiem for Recycled Earth

Contemporary genius James Ferraro pushes his hybrid style to beautiful effect with a 62 minute
opus striking an elegiac nerve of brilliantly slippery soundtrack music that short circuits the
difference between Philip Glass’ music for ‘Koyaanisqatsi’, the kind of schlocky tones you might
expect on a Graham Hancock video about ancient civilisations and some Hans Zimmer score for a
wide-eyed Spielberg epic, as if re-imagined by 0PN and Kara-Lis Coverdale.
The piece breaks down into 11 parts, conducting a spellbinding traverse from the primal,
metallic noise and buoyant chorale of ‘Embryo’ to the bittersweet curdle of ’Xerces Blau’, taking
in spectacular FM synthesis sound designs with the transitions between ‘Omega Generation’
and ‘Cyber Seed’ or the perceptive depth to ‘Recycled Sky that show off an enhanced grasp of
production nous, all while still allowing for that Mona Lisa smirk to his sound with the title and
EDM nods in ‘Malign Blossom’.
As ever with Ferraro, though, not all is quite what it seems. He somehow manages to highlight an
ambiguity between the objective reality and its mediated, subjective reflection, with a music that
speaks to the impending, heightening drama of the situation, but also the saccharine melodrama
of weepy emoji-adorned social media statuses (#Attenborough) and the well-meaning but
ultimately piecemeal measures taken to avoid the inevitable

Basic Rhythm - On The Threshold

The album starts with 'St. Fabian Tower', named after the now demolished tower block in Chingford where Anthoney used to DJ for Rude FM. The track's lush detuned synths and syncopated drums are girded by stern low end frequencies. Drum and bass, jungle and hardcore are the touchstones here, but the forms he creates make no attempt to imitate the music of those eras. Take the rolling, bubbling, almost jazz-drummer patterns of 'Yeah, I Like It' and 'I Want You' where strange pops and bubbles seem to be forced through the grid almost like they're an effect of pressure. It's an odd juxtaposition next to the soulful vocals but an effective one. 'Edge Of Darkness' meanwhile, is an intense, rough ride of sliding rhythms and elephantine bass. Elsewhere, like on 'A New Consciousness', things are tempered into a more streamlined techno-like hybrid. He lets loose in the claps and kicks banger of 'Fi Di Gyal', but even here there are neat sonic tricks that sound like nods to minimalist composition.

On The Threshold is a balance of smart and energetic, non linear thoughtfulness and makeshift experimentalism that does away with boundaries, but is very much its own self contained world.

Coming off the back of the critically acclaimed Trilogy project for Ingredients Records, producer DJ & visual artist, Alex Eveson aka Dead Man’s Chest, continues to explore his unique brand of tripped out junglist revivalism with the launch of his latest creative venture: Western Lore.

The Throwing Shades EP throws down a patchwork concoction of lazer tinged breaks, atmospheric rushes, soundclash recordings and crusty rave tape samples, deftly woven together in Dead Man’s Chest’s signature punch-drunk style.

Hallucinator / Katharsys - Best Of Digipot Part II

We launch a new vinyl series, strictly limited to 200 units, NO repress, on which we'll be releasing the finest tracks released on The Digital Pot (DIGIPOT).

For this second strike, we've chosen a couple of tracks released back in 2015, for our 10 year anniversary.

This time, italian duo Hallucinator, usual suspect on PRSPCT Recordings and on the biggest hardcore events worldwide, delivers a psychodelic mad track called "Circus Freak". Banger.
On the flip, once again for this vinyl limited series, french duo Katharsys brings a bunch of filthness with Suricate.

No Way Records
02.07.2019

Somnia ne cures, nam mens humana quod optat, dum vigilat sperat, per somnum credit id ipsum.

In his first anthological compilation, No Way Records chooses to focus attention on electronic music where the rhythm is almost absent and the sound is perpetually suspended and liquid. A selection of ten tracks for ten artists who explore ambient music in its different identities and contaminations. "Haunting Memories" opens with the rarefied and evocative ambient of NFEREE and Fonemi, going through the industrial echoes of La Pièce & CHSTRL, the analogical sequences of Paul André, the "artificial intelligence" of Wayne Duggan, the science fiction territories of Baransu and Main Leaf, the electro of Sicarius Hahni and Kryss Hypnowave. The collection closes with a leap in the heart of the parallel universe of Falkke. Music for the fourth dimension.

Various - Electronic Voyages: Early Moog recordings 1964-1969

In support of their forthcoming Bob Moog documentary Electronic Voyager, Waveshaper Media have produced a compilation LP of Moog recordings from the 1960s. The first compilation of its kind, Electronic Voyages: Early Moog recordings 1964-1969 contains tracks by Robert Arthur Moog, Herbert Deutsch, Joel Chadabe, Lothar and the Hand People, Intersystems, Ruth White, Max Brand, and Paul Earls. All of these tracks, released here on vinyl in an edition of 1000 copies, have been scarcely heard and difficult to track down, with all but three of them previously unreleased on vinyl.

Bypassing the Moog synthesizer’s backseat appearance on key pop recordings by the likes of the Beatles, the Doors, and the Beach Boys, Electronic Voyages aims to highlight the diverse approach of 1960s musicians and composers who adopted the Moog as their primary instrument; these recordings all feature the Moog synthesizer front and centre. Beginning with an “audio letter” (The Abominatron) from Bob Moog to his musician-muse Herbert Deutsch, demonstrating some of the first Moog synthesizer prototype’s capabilities, Electronic Voyages veers from avant-garde and electronic soundscapes, to psychedelic madness and summer-of-love pop. In the 1960s, the Moog synthesizer was a new, groundbreaking instrument, and its use was completely uncharted territory. The pioneering use of the Moog on all of these recordings sounds fresh today - you can sense the wide-eyed exploratory delight unfolding, and the disparate results range from endearingly naive (Lothar and the Hand People, Paul Earls) to downright eerie (Ruth White, Intersystems).

The musicians and composers behind these Electronic Voyages may have been among the first to adopt Moog synthesizers, but the fact that they so readily found within them expressivity, heart, and a means to translate their wondrous sense of discovery, speaks far more to Bob Moog’s visionary invention and enduring legacy.

"PORTASTUDIO AMBIENT TAPES" is a 1-sided, 3 track 12" EP. Now many years later JAMES DUNCAN’s INNERMOODS imprint releases 3 of these compositions on vinyl for the first (and ONLY!) time

Max WÜRDEN - Format

Format draws from its Latin origin: "formatus", meaning "to be formed". Over two years, Germany's Max Wureden produced a variety of tracks using completely different approaches. It wasn't until they were placed together in unison that the strengths from the variety of productions came together. Max's studio recordings lined up alongside live performances; field recordings of foot-steps and sounds from deep forests amongst broken leaves and custom synthesizers; processed guitar-loops weave amongst soaring ambient pads and energetic driving analog pulses segue classic 90's ambient depicting the very furthest reaches of space. Max's abstract impressions were weaved together and Format was born. The result captures the very best of Max's multi-disciplinary techniques we've come to admire throughout his many productions and collaborations over the years with the likes of Thore Pfeiffer and his releases on Kompakt's Pop Ambient series.

Mike Simonetti - Mike’s Finest Breed

Vinyl only. Even though we're not paladins of pure concepts, the sound we're currently looking to release usually has a raw, kinda primitive and rough around the edges nature. We're definitely not looking for the generic "soul sample meets a 4x4 beat" kind of edit. Our very own first release is the perfect picture of what we wanted this label to be. Can’t go wrong with a Mike Simonetti turn.

Object Collection - You Are Under Our Space Control

Following their acclaimed opera-in-suspension about Fugazi, NYC’s Object Collection imagine
a delirium of transhuman thought and progressive politics on their return to the inimitable Slip
label.
‘You Are Under Our Space Control’ sees the duo of Kara feely (text) and travis just (music) refocus
their “operatic” sensibilities into a typically confounding “space-opera” that somehow ties up
references as wide reaching as John Cage’s 1951 piano solo ‘Music Of Changes’, with Cy Roth’s
sci-fi ‘Fire Maidens From Outer Space’ from the same year, as well as texts inspired by Sun Ra and
the Russian Cosmists’ poetics and philosophies, and interviews from real (and imagined) space
travellers and astronomers.
Aye, it’s a proper headful of ideas, and understandably chaotic with it, but OC’s make a virtue of
somehow maintaining a coherence though their sharply chopped arrangements, which start out
tightly puckered, but gradually loosen up into more sprawling, psychedelic designs as the album
proceeds.
What happens in its 18 parts is comparable to a sort of home-brewed sci-fi soundtrack imagined
by a teenaged dream-team of Todd Dockstader, Bruce Haack, and Sonny Blount; a sound full of
mercurial wormholes, with an animist capacity to rouse arcane spirits, and a magnetic pull to the
most restlessly searching listeners of the weird and wonderful. Most crucially, for an album rooted
in ‘50s sci-fi and avant-garde, the results prize that era’s modernist promise without coming off
as retrogressive or corny.

Be-2 - Minimum Unit Of Human Existence

From a new label set up by Claudio Mate, partner in the Dub-Ito label, responsible for the killer Soloist & Second Apartment and Dark Star LPs. Mate is a Japanese music fanatic, who has guested on Japan Blues' NTS show. His painstaking research in this field unearthed the works of Be-2.

Be-2 was the brainchild of cosmic rock guitarist Zen Oikawa and Psycho. The band released two flexi discs and a cassette on Oikawa's Inner Space Records in the early 80s.

Prior to that, Oikawa ran a cosmic rock band called Space Mandala, Be-2 was his merging of that style with the new wave moves of the early 80s. Since then, he has been music director for projects for anime giants Studio Ghibli, contributing to the soundtracks of Kurenai no Butta (Porco Rosso) and Omohide Poro Poro (Only Yesterday).

BE-2 "Minimum In Survivable Human Race Unit" was composed between 1982 and 1984. Available on vinyl for first time, and featuring unreleased tracks. A blend of of proto-techno, noise, ambient, channelling Manuel Gottsching, Ashra Temple, Klaus Schulze, and The Durutti Column,.

Low Jack - Jingles du Lieu-dit

Low Jack continues to rudely shape the dancehall in his own style with ‘Jingles du
Lieu-dit’ - the sequel to 2018’s ‘Riddims du Lieu-dit’ - packing six innovative mutations
inspired by radio jingles, YouTube dembow megamixes, sound effects and sonic clichés
Picking up where his screwed industrial dancehall edits left off last year, Low Jack racks
up six anti-nuke riddims from the bassbins of Brittany, churning up pendulous grooves in
acres of murky dub space with a patented sleight-of-hand.
Oscillating weightless, dematerialised, and heavily present frequencies, Low Jack turns
the dancehall into a flux of ‘90s ragga duppies and now ting reggaeton, leaving its rugged
structures notably free of vocals but full of characterful samples, idents, and studio elves
that can’t help but connote the artist’s moodily crafty and kinetic style, lying right on the
cusp of darkside and party-ready concerns.
Up in it, he executes a scything re-chop on Richard Browne’s ‘Baddis’ riddim teasing
out its eastern motifs into woozy shapes on ‘More Speed’, whereas ‘Dinner’ exerts a
hypnotic spin on reggaeton’s rub ’n tug rhythms and ’Shell’ spirals headlong into a vortex
of soundsystem ephemera. Down below, meanwhile, ‘Lasers’ finds its range in massively
swollen bass and GRM-like cyberdub dimensions, along with the windswept dancehall of
‘Find Them’ and the outstanding, hydraulic pressure of ‘Wheel.’

This third release on City Volts Records from the international producer and DJ collective sees West Loop Chicago channelling their inner Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters for this heavily jazz-fusion influenced record. The A-Side features 'The Serpent', a frantic analogue synth dance floor gem with its Mini Moog and Oberheim OB-6 parts leading the charge, a track very much inspired by Herbie's 'Chameleon' and Barry Miles' 'Magic Theater' from 1975, a Gilles Peterson/Dingwalls standard. The B-side includes 'Divinity', a more soulful affair with its delicious Fender Rhodes chords and atmospheric piano solos, which furthermore highlights the high level of musicianship contained within the 12". Both tracks also feature their respective bonus beats versions with 'Serpentine Bonus Beats' and 'Divine Bonus Beats' providing the rhythm tracks for both.

Beat Movement - Black Gardenia Vol.1

*Third vinyl release from the Berlin based Jazz-O-Tech Records.

Jazz-O-Tech introduces Black Gardenia Vol.1 composed by Berlin-based duo BEAT MOVEMENT.
The duo presents an unusual, psychedelic and moving techno jazz EP in collaboration with techno pioneer Sunil Sharpe, Italian saxophonist and composer Gianni Mimmo and the jazz quartet Gamapawa.
Black Gardenia is a mesmerizing aesthetic sound experience, taking the listener on abstract journeys and into cinematic sceneries. The title track "Silent Rain" opens the A-side with a soft and emotional fusion of drones and saxophone, followed by the sovereign and psychedelic slow groove of the track "Aphex Twin shot my neck". The B-side is a dancefloor killer combination between Sunil Sharpe's intelligent techno remix of “Silent Rain” and Gamapawa's featuring track "Untitled Reconstruction", where drums and saxophone reach the speed of 150 bpm.
Black Gardenia will be distributed worldwide in 300 limited edition copies.
