Sven Väth . Sound of the 16th Season
People have their personal rituals. Leaving the International Space Station Russian space travelers left some bread and salt as a welcome gift for their American colleagues. Tennis star Serena Williams bounces the ball exactly five times before her first serve. Our beloved master of ceremony of techno music, Sven Väth, has a ritual as well: When the shadows on the island Ibiza grow longer and the noise of the summer is about to fade away, he takes a couple of days off and reminisces the passing season, the parties, the crowds and the music: What were the craziest, the most outrageous, most beautiful moments Which situations, which encounters inspired me What did we laugh about And of course: what was the best music Which tracks accompanied me and my Cocoon People during those intense weeks Väth assembles those magical tracks for the sixteenth time this year merging them into two and a half hour set.
With "Sound of the 16th Season", Väth brings together friends from CocoonLs environment, as well as long time companions from all over the world and young, aspiring musicians. Väth opens with DJ Koze's "XTC": Through a cloudy, blurry soundscape, a captivating melody begins to talk to us. This exceptional piece of music manages to merge contradictory feelings. Väth uses it to set an emotional anchor, to what is at stake. Matthew Dekay plays a single cello chord to wait for a short moment. Those seconds of silence turns the track into a poetical starting signal. Väth stops the grooves harshly and sets a new tone, with "Next Please" by Metaboman, a high-spirited, twisted, funny, electronic polka. With the outrageous techno soul of Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig the legendary Detroit honchos turn play into drama. Jacob Korn takes this thread and adds melodic Detroit sounds releasingthe tension with a jazzy, experimental gesture. With Leon Vynehalls reduced gospel, the set reaches a spiritual moment, which is driven on by Aaron with his wonderful, driving "Whatcha Say. The beautiful passionate voice says: "That's what you say.h Singing the line over and over again, it turns into confirmation, reminder and some kind of warning. With the pretty, quiet "Do not disturb Bjorn" Väth allows us to pause for a moment. Beloved for his delicate sound textures, John Tejada extends the shades of the subdued mood. Mattheis turns it into something different in a very subtle way, using penetrating strings with an anthem like quality. With Patrick SpeckeLs & Daze MaximLs contribution, Väth brings the set down on the groove to move into the finale of the first part: "Drifting" by Jacek Sienkiewicz puts us with beautiful, delicate sounds in a state of childlike enchantment. Ricardo Tobar implements this unique feeling using wider, soft, springy sounds, which let us float like a balloon. VäthLs second set takes off with Tim Green's "Eclipse": a happily boasting bassline leads us through a charming house groove. Alex Smoke transformed this curiosity into cockiness using vigorous acid sounds. Heartthrob breaks the playful energy with cool electronic sounds, which escalate into a furious snare drum thunderstorm. Tim Wright emerges further into inexhaustible deep space of electronic sounds, employing a screeching electro bassline with a twinkle in his eye. Deetron picks us up with overwhelmingly positive tribal sound and a beaming, unforgettable riff. With Bastinov Väth absorbs the emotional life of this track and adds more shades with fascinating violin sounds. Robert Hood transforms Bastinovs thoughtfulness with a brilliant synthesizer figure into an electrifying soul. Väth does an utterly surprising u-turn with a song by Swedish cult band The Knife, merging Afro-American Soul into highly sensitive Indie. Geeemans very special way to modulate his voice is reminiscent of the "Ba Ba Bah, Aha ha ha" from Väth's own, legendary "Electrica Salsa". Now we are in the frenzy of the night, it is time for Techno. Gary Beck pulls us into another world with a powerful groove and an epic hookline, Pig & Dan condense this mood to give the message "Universal Love". "Warehouse Memories" brings back recollections of crazed parties in abandoned factories. Väth clears the madness with Alex BauLs hypnotic, flowing grooves. Dimi Angelis sets a soulful final chord with a beautiful riff merging fragile violin sounds and a shrill 8-bit synth, so the set can fade away in a charmingly mellow piece of Petar Dundov.
The bread and the salt of the Russians is only a welcome gift. "The Sound of the 16th Season" unites past, present and future. Both CDs provide an opportunity to remember the best moments of the
summer as the storms of autumn sweep around the houses. But it's not just about the past, but also about tomorrow: The rousing tracks make you looking forward to 2016: the dancing, the laughter, the sun, the beautiful people and the contented, generous smile our Sven!

"We Will Not Harm You" sees "UK bass legend" (Mixmag) Dobie release his first album since 1997's classic, "The Sound Of One Hand Clapping" (Pussyfoot). Thirteen tracks of deep, beautifully worked instrumental music, based in hip hop but touching on techno, house, dubstep, latin, twostep, jazz, soul, funk and everything in between, "We Will Not Harm You" is a work of art from one of the pillars of the Black British music scene.
Created over the eighteen months, "We Will Not Harm You" sees Dobie develop the style pioneered on his two EPs for Big Dada and take it still further. In combining his love of classic breaks with the most contemporary music-making techniques, his feel for soul with the essential rawness of his hip hop education, Dobie makes something unique and timeless. So "Blip 124" runs bleep back through the bloco, "Stan Lee Is Hero Of Mine" pits funk drumming against a snaking, evil, electronic bassline, and first single "She Moans" is an exercise in the interaction between percussion and bottom end, a kind of deconstruction of dubstep back into its consitutuent parts. Tunes like "The Chant" and "Crunch Factor No.5" are an insturmental hip hop as hard, edgy and psychedelic as anything coming out of the LA Beat Scene, "Snap, Crackle & Pop" takes the spirit of breaking and spins it out into space, "Magenta" re-thinks the house grooove. "Then I Woke Up," meanwhile, is an exercise in psychotic mood music, "Somewhere Over There" is the kind of beautiful, soulful interlude you'd expect to find on an obscure soul-jazz B side, while "She Wiggles When She Walks" is a shimmering, transcendent conclusion to a great album.

Lukas Brzostek EP

Der unwiderstehliche Ostfunk Groove breitet sich nicht nur immer weiter westlich von Berlin aus, sondern auch östlich. So gibt es nun einen Zugang aus dem Nachbarland Polen mit Lukas Brzostek, der bei seinem Ostfunk Debüt mit gleich zwei echten Minimal House Clubsmashern losrockt - Music' ist typischer gut gelaunter Ostfunksound, - Crash Bash' rockt darüberhinaus mit ein Vocal Sample im Background, das den Track unverwechselbar macht.

Eric Kanzler - Little EP

Eric Kanzler, well known for his project Kanzler & Wischnewski, is - for sure - one of the most advanced producers on the Ostfunk Label. His new output - the - Little' EP is dedicated to the the topic sexuality as the titles - Little fucker' and - Sex on the streets' claim. It´s groovy and the ironic vocal samples are really catchy!!! Kanzler for president!

Lukas Brzostek EP

The Ostfunk Sound is irresistable and expands not only in the western hemisphere of Berlin but as well in the eastern direction of the German capital. So the new Ostfunk product is coming from Poland´s finest minimal house artist Lukas Brzostek, who is delivering two real club smasher.' The track - Music' is Ostfunk track at its best who bring the Berlin feeling to the dancefloors, - Crash Bash' is really rocking with ist nice background vocal that makes the track unique.

3024 welcomes a bright young lad from Denmark to the label by the name of Erosion Flow. These three vibrant little nuggets of funk are the introduction to his ambitious Spectrums series. Artwork by Erosie (no relation)

Jesse Calosso is a Bronx-born DJ and producer, part of a tight clique of New York artists that includes such luminaries as The Martinez Brothers and Filsonik. 2015 has been a busy year for him. Not only has he completed a mix-tape style album as Masters at Dutch with The Martinez Brothers and Blas Cordero, but also his tracks 'Serving Size' and 'Whatever Right Now' appeared on the Tuskegee EP 'The Come Up Vol 1'. He has DJ-d at Output in Brooklyn, Circoloco in Ibiza and at Seth Troxler's Acid Future party in London to name but three. Now, he releases a brand new four-track EP called 'The Incoming' on Cuttin' Headz.

'The Incoming' is a diverse collection of tracks that shows a real maturing of Calosso's style. As far as influences are concerned, he says 'It all goes back to disco', and speaks fondly of his father's 'attic full of vinyl.' No doubt it was this variety of early musical starting points that led him to create 'The Incoming'.

The EP starts with 'This is 140', a rhythmic builder with crisp drums, filtered, cut-up sampled vocals and a funky bassline. Next up is '9AM', an acid-tinged track with hypnotic soundscapes and spacey washes. 'Scratch That' brings the tempo up with its tougher, techy sound. Finally, 'Knocking' is a main room thumper with an agitated bass hook beneath a sinister top line synth motif.

While he cites the likes of DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Robert Armani and Robert Hood as influences, with 'The Incoming' Calosso has begun to carve out his own unique sound that will ensure his work stands up against that of his idols.

Mojuba sub label a.r.t.less welcomes the Munich Techno Duo Trap10! After introducing and reintroducing prolific artists like Stephen Brown, JP Enfant and Fanon Flowers it's time for another addition to the a.r.t.less label roster! Trap10 deliver three very convincing tracks for their debut EP showcasing the cornerstones of their sound. From straight peak-time action on the A-Side to head-nodding & feet stomping funk infused Techno with soul on the flip, dress to sweat!

Berlin resident and general man-about-town, Asa 808 has run parties supporting underground house and techno all over the city for years whilst simultaneously learning his craft as a producer and DJ. 'Ignorance', 'Attachment' and 'Bad Karma' all beautifully capture the patience, melodic intricacy and raw functionality which characterises the finest dance music coming from this great city.

Certain Creatures (born Oliver Chapoy) offers up Vipassana, his debut 2xLP album on Styles Upon Styles.

The album features eleven songs centered around the relationship between power electronics, techno and darkwave pop.

Oliver's resume extends from the early 90's when he was a pivotal player in Miami's hardcore scene by way of his band, Shai Hulud, before moving into post-rock territory (Saxon Shore) and electronic pop (Warm Ghost). Since departing from Warm Ghost, however, Oliver has focused on electronics in a solo environment: His first release as Certain Creatures dropped in 2013 as part of SUS's Bangers & Ash 12" series, w/ guest vocals from Stuart Argabright.

His collaboration with Stuart led to the most prominent credit in Oliver's production career: the opportunity to produce Black Rain's first album of new material since 1996. Dark Pool (Blackest Ever Black), heralded as Black Rain's comeback proper, provided the best scope of Oliver's production and compositional talent to date. With Vipassana, Oliver offers his first full-length solo excursion.

Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Antony) mixed Vipassana,which features guest vocals from Bonnie Baxter (Shadowbox / Kill Alters) and Jon Philpot (Bear in Heaven) on "The Suffering Seas" and "In Safety of Cold Light," respectively.

Its a bold and brave producer who takes on the task of remixing a stone-cold classic cut from the annuals of House history, but thats just what Joris Voorn, KiNK, Phil Weeks and Ambivalent have done with their fresh versions of DJ Dozia's Ovum debut 'Pop Culture'. Originally released back in 1998 'Pop Culture' rapidly gained cult status on the underground. Created by fellow Philly resident Dozia Blakey, the raw and sparse original, at over ten minutes, was made for the dark, strobe-lit, sweat-on-walls rooms where it found favour. Backed by the equally popular Size-9 remix, 'Pop Culture' was, and still is, a record that never leaves the box for many. Now, with a fresh set of remixes, its set for a glorious return. The original twelve inch is still one of the most sought after twelve inches on discogs. So what did persuade our set of remixers to take on this challenge Well, lets ask them... KiNK - 'I heard Pop Culture by DJ Dozia for first time on the Profound Sounds Vol.1 mix by Josh Wink and since then it's one of my all time favourite tracks! It's an honour to remix it, but it was a very difficult task, the track is just perfect as it is. That's why my version is very close to the original, with a little KiNK in it.' Phil Weeks - 'This is without a doubt one of my favourite all-time 'classic' records. Since day one. So I was very happy to be asked to come on board with a remix. That's also the reason why I stayed pretty close to the OG version.

Once again another masterpiece from the Dynamic Reflection squad! This time it's from the young guns Dynamo with amazing remixes from the heavyweights Peter van Hoesen and Samuli Kemppi. Dynamo is a collaboration between Paul Boex and Marco Rane.

JULIE MARGHILANO and MISS JOOLS team up on "CHASING ILLUSIONS" for the 5th release on HYPERTONE. The original mix features MZ SUNDAY LUV and brings bass laden beats speckled with seductive vocals. NOEL JACKSON drops a hot percussion heavy mix while SCOTT KEMP & CRIS J strip down the original.

Second release on Rennie Foster's vinyl label, RF Trax, is a monster of a DJ cut, with homage to the Robert Hood's Floorplan releases, but with RF's unique style.
Made from jacking drums, an unusual live soul sample, and a relentless, minimal arrangement make this a very hot DJ tool. Adding to that is three high quality remixes from techno don, Stephen Brown, Detroit's Antwon Faulkner, and a deeper house vibe by Cloudmaster Weed.
Artwork for RF Trax is created by Vancouver based artist Vasho Pekar. The unusual method of creation involves photographing projected images and text onto objects; there is no Photoshop involved in these images, they are each an unaltered photograph.

Poll021 is the third vinyl project on the label from the Big Brother Production trio and is one not to miss. Somewhat based on the underground sound of Milan, Leo Mas and friends have crafted a strong tech house project aimed at the dance floor with vocal snippets and processed vocal fx which generate a solid and deep groove. With house music in mind and a funked up baseline the project evolves into a tech driven journey into the unique sound from this three producers. On the flip side the boys have twisted up a remix version taking a deep edge of the actual original. A pure and deep baseline flows with minimal and solid drum programming.

Keep up with the present or time will pass you by. Electronic music is in a constant state of development and so is IWW labelhost Maxâge. His personal artist biography urges the reader to expect big things and his newest release the D.O.C. 1988 EP clearly shows that Maxâge wants to keep this promise. Scabies and Embidi might resemble Maxâges earlier work in terms of spaced out vocals and driving midlevel basslines but Maxâge is not the guy to rest on his laurels. He has certainly risen the bar regarding complexity and level of detail whilst paying homage to the past with a hinted acid reference. Also Maxâge's everlasting love for Italy is yet again represented by long time labelfriend LEON who delivers a jackin' remix for Scabies!

Iconic Honey Dijon (Classic, NY) delivers a pure old school Chicago's style remix as Oskar Offermann (White/Hardmoon, Berlin) goes step by step into a beautifull rythmic, melodic, hypnotic remix.

Our first release in 2013 comes up with a new VARIED artist. We are very pleased to introduce you to the Cologne-based DJ and producer Pfeiffer. After several digital releases it`s about time to give this exceptional talent a chance for his first vinyl release. As a co-founder of the Cologne-based rheinrhythmik event series he has created his own idea of music within the last few years. We are impressed and fascinated by what we`ve heard so far.
