Cahoots Records celebrates one year with the release of Volume 4 featuring tracks by Borai, Ave Astra, stevn.aint.leavn, and Anders Hellberg.
Bristol based Borai kicks off Volume 4 with 'Thinking of You,' a clean, classic take on house music. Strongly recognized for his productions on labels like Chicago's Tasteful Nudes, Retrofit and Needwant, Borai's contribution to Volume 4 continues his ode to classic deep house with upbeat drums and straightforward melodies that nod to the New York & New Jersey anthems of yore.
Calling the shots next is 'Clap Your Hands' by Ave Astra, who delivers deep pressure kicks and bass that work hard underneath thick, flowing pads, rhythmic synth-work and explosive vocal samples. Ave's imprint Roit Recordings presses cutting edge raw house and techno with love from Istanbul. His previous productions have found homes on top house labels such as 124 Recordings and Made Fresh Daily.
For Volume 4, Cahoots decided to turn over the B-Side duties to two fresh Berlin artists. stevn.aint.leavn, hailing from the infamous Beste Modus crew, is a regular in the Berlin scene. His contribution 'Silk Share' is a galloping work of punchy percussive rolls and fills. This train is certainly rolling through and will be making a few quick stops along the way. stevn.aint.leavn's live sets always promise rugged beats and vibes built strictly for the club.
Our next Berlin based Cahoots cohort, Anders Hellberg closes out Volume 4 with 'Viol,' an aggressive analog anthem with driving techno influence. A hypnotic bassline carries the track through dark passages of menacing dips and drops as stuttering hat and drum patterns keep this one locked into an firm groove. Anders' continues his journey into sound with promising releases on labels including Telefonplan and Sonntag Morgen.

After releasing his stunning debut "Diamond Days" on Traum and the follow up "Nothingness EP" Egokind told us he had the idea for an album already sitting in the back of his head.
To be able to convert all of his ideas he asked his long time friend and collaborator Ozean to work with him. For both of them "Transition" is their debut album, but both artists can draw on a lot of experience recording music from multiple genres.

The A1 track "Mega" is a track which illustrates Egokind & Ozean's approach to touch many grounds resulting in something gigantic. The track itself begins rather acoustic inviting you to the private world of Egokind & Ozean, before it becomes a joyous balearic tune that despite its wealth keeps slight dissonances coming and going.

"Every Time You Smile" is an energetic piece of warped music which swells and and then in the next moment is diminished to small islands of voices that turn like mad creating a new cosmos almost comical at times, but always very kind and gentle as well.

On the flipside "Light Realms" flows into "Silverbird" with no pause: "Silverbird" then opens the curtain and lets the sun fill out the whole room with yellow golden rays. Egokind & Ozean then unfold a garage house track which makes small turns but stay very organic and warm.

And "Everybody Dance Now" by its title makes things very clear. Egokind & Ozean have crammed all their skills here into an hi-energy dance track, still keeping one big surprise to come halftime, when they decide to leave the trail of club culture by introducing a fantastic acoustic intermezzo, juggling and bending their sounds to the max.

Spacey Detroit-inspired electro from new Maltese producer Microlith, aka Rhys Celeste. Brought to the labels attention by the mighty Dave Monolith, they were instantly hooked.
Microlith sits well among the likes of B12, Plaid and AFX (analord era), but with a strong electro rhythm preference rather than the aforementioned artists 4/4 techno.
Rhys admits to being heavily influenced by 90's techno and vintage analog gear, and this E.P. explores that influence to great effect, plucking the heartstrings of classic techno fans with every track.

Here comes Adil Hiani, known to be one of the rulers over the Casablanca Cosmo(s), with a fresh and snappy impression from the countryside. And with a wink of the drunken eye...
The floor is soft and juicy, every step on it makes the body feel more flexible, ready to receive foreign rhythms. Adil Hiani's original version of "Les Moutons Ivres" is an invitation to follow, but mind to keep pace: the track is a straight forward mover with an imperative to hold the flock together. The direction is straight up the hill to make the crowd sweat a little bit more than usual during their dance workout. There is no rest, except for drinking and chatting amusement while still in motion. And to enjoy small wonders of unexpected hallucinations. Like sheep with chimes around their necks that play a Christmas song.

Actually, we all like moments like that which appear to be unreal, don't we Take a deep breath, and onward into the freshness of an after hour morning with an expanded view of the universe that smells like teen sheep spirit.

You will enjoy the party to continue forever when listening to the dizzyness of "Les Moutons Ivres" in a high-proof freestyle mode: marching music for a funky youth sets the floor on fire while everybody involved feels hilariously cute and funny. Together with Adil, San Proper, the Amsterdam-based master of a soaring flow, puts his magic hands on the track to make its soul grow to dope dimensions. One of the most reduced basslines imaginable encourages the additional players to deliver their finest freakout to go with the restrained energy and a hypnotic, looped-based tempting overture, the intoxication level rises just at the right moment to keep the collective rapture coming like the cork out of a champagne bottle (sexual connotation intended). Jolly hot!
Just like those kisses which are not anonymous at all as the title "Le Bisous Anonyme" purports to announce. In fact they are officially sent here by the charming queen of the groove, Sonja Moonear. And what a smart groove construction she concocts. Heavily stimulating ankles and hips in an extravagantly syncopated manner, the beat on her "Paris
Texas" remix serves as a transporter medium where kisses surf on delays of wistful slide guitar melodies played by Reda Cherif. Which keeps the dancers comfortably dizzy in their heads and souls.

SPANISH ARTIST CUARTERO DEBUTS WITH THE DYNAMIC 'ABANDONADO' EP ON DESOLAT X The Desolat X series welcomes in spring with a package of peak-time house rollers by Spain's rising star Cuartero, who has already caused a stir with previous releases on labels such as VIVa Music, Moon Harbour Recordings and Butch's Bouq Records. Both 'Abandonado' and 'Children's Game' are perfectly executed examples of peak-time hedonistic house and their thumping beats are characterised by driving drums, pulsating bass, spoken world samples and percussion flourishes throughout. 'Strike' slows down the tempo, adding exotic sounds and samples that create a brooding tense house record. 'Sweet In the Morning' again operates at a slightly slower BPM, with a deeper groove and percussion spirals sweeping throughout the track. Normal service resumes on 'Remember Then' which rounds off the EP in fine style. It is another rolling house cut, which features deep bass, hip-hop sample and 808 whirls. All in all the 'Abandonado' EP is a classy debut release from Cuartero, and his best release to date. Label artwork by Digital Primate.

Heidi calls upon Miami bad boy Jesse Perez and Detroit maverick Jimmy Edgar for the third installment of Heidi's Jackathon Jams. Turning up the heat ghetto booty style, Jesse delivers three original stompers of bump and grind with Jimmy twisting his unique sound into 'Interracial Booty Calls' whilst still paying tribute to the scenes originators. Heidi likes to call this EP the Panty Dropper. Starting the label in 2012 alongside a hectic touring schedule and Radio 1 show, Heidi proves once again why she is one of the leading ladies in the business. After killer releases vol.1 and 2 Heidi's Jackathon Jams continues to serve up big records from the freshest talent. Born in a small Latin neighbourhood in Miami, Jesse Perez had a colourful upbringing exposed to bootyshaking music. After a stint in the porn business, he started Mr. Nice Guy Records spreading his unapologetically bad boy house with releases on labels including Stereo Productions, Spica Records and Booty Breaks and more recently on the mighty Hot Creations. Jimmy Edgar rounds off the release with his sensational remix of 'Interracial Booty Calls'. Detroit native but now based in Berlin, Jimmy is seen as a leading force in the industry with releases on the likes of Warp Records, Detroit Underground, Items & Things, K7! and a recent album on Scuba's Hotflush Recordings.

Kicking off the new year Steve Bug style - Poker Flat Recordings sets course for another year of quality house music. The label boss himself presents us with the first transmission of 2014 - and the title succinctly nails what to expect. 'Simple, Thick & Raw' contains three tracks that are simultaneously gritty, tough and highly effective. 'The Arpeggio' contains Bug's signature control of tension - an arpeggiated synth line bubbles along, hardly restrained, on top of a firing drum pattern, resulting in a groove wound tight and packed with suspense. 'Thickest Bass' is also fairly self explanatory pitched down vocal introduces what might just be the filthiest bottom end Bug has ever produced. The track has a raw, off-kilter quality that will see it destroy many clubs when dropped at the optimum moment. 'Smoking Parrot' completes the trio, a tough yet spacey burner that builds into a indisputable floor-rocker, complete with punchy claps, descending bass-line and Bug's well honed dynamics.

After sending Scala to Berlin, twirling his Hélice in London and colonising Bapteme in Cologne, Agoria declares 'Independence' in Barcelona. An anthem that's been a highlight of the summer for Maceo Plex and Agoria, Independence's date has finally being fixed.

Agoria's debut release on Ellum is an equally sinister and experimental affair. Apocalyptic drum crescendos are broken up by warm synths tones and washed against baritone basslines on the title track. Architectural's stunning rework elevates it to an eerie, cavernous space. 'Gravity' featuring Nicolas Becker, features spoken word layered over a driving, hypnotic groove. This alternative vinyl version of 'Independence' is only available on the 12" features the infamous Russian pianist Mikhail Rudy.

Sébastien Devaud AKA Agoria was living in rural France when he first got hooked to electronic music. He started producing and releasing his own tracks in 1999 and gained international recognition with a series of 12´s on Pias recordings in 2002. Agoria has released four critically acclaimed long-players and countless singles. Resident Advisor named his At The Controls compilation series one of the best mix-cds of the past decade. He also founded Nuits Sonores, one of the best European festivals is currently experimenting with cinéma with film director Jan Kounen & with contemporary art.

Somewhere deep in the Andromeda Galaxy lies the mysterious planet Wasteland. Little is known. Though, rumor says it inhabits lifeforms from all over the Laniakea supercluster. These lifeforms have only one thing in common: on their home planet they are part of the Mutant Society. As an exclusive product for members of the Mutant Society on Earth, Radio Matrix recorded the auditory data from its latest visitor, Delta Funktionen. Spread over 4 EP's and compiled on this cd, it tells the intense story of his journey towards Wasteland.

Counterchange founder Ed Davenport drops three lovingly crafted Techno jams for the fifth release on the label.

'Counter005' guides us through the versatile styles of the British producer's sound; precise, filtering techno; urgent cut up vocal funk; housed-up 909 jams.

The EP sees Davenport look to faster tempos and a driving, Techno aesthetic, no doubt inspired by his regular and extended sets at a certain Berlin clubbing institution. That said, the eternal, hypnotic House groove remains present throughout.

Und dann kommt auch noch Nico Pusch mit seiner You EP, die schlichtweg vollkommene Liebe und pure Sonne im Herzen trägt. Flankiert von einem grandiosen Remix von Carlo Ruetz und einer groovenden Interpretation von plunk.ton ist es kaum noch möglich, die Zeit bis zum Sommer abzuwarten. Doch bietet dieses Release mehr als nur ein kleine Entschädigung!

Two years on from the release of their second RocketNumberNine album MeYouWeYou, London-born brothers in synth-and-drum Ben and Tom Page announce their return to the live improv fray with a crisp new black-and-white Split Vinyl 12' for Border Community: the James Holden-produced live take recordings of two track 12' 'Two Ways'.

A-side 'Two Ways' couples Tom's afro-tinged percussive melodics with Ben's beefy driving bass component to gradually build to an urgent, wild and joyful free jazz crescendo. On the flip, the complementary yet contrasting 'Balance of Imbalance' powers ahead noisily at the behest of Ben's insistent rave stabs, aided and abetted by the frenetic rattle of Tom's vintage Slingerland kit and the odd judiciously positioned atonal metallic clang.

In what is a momentous occasion for Soma Records, we hit the milestone 400th release of the label and who better to see this in than label heads SLAM as they lead up to their new album due to drop this October. Soma are proud to present the double A sided Rotary/Catacoustics. Slam have been locked away in the studio these past months working hard on their latest album which sees them look to past machines and new technologies to form the base of this new album. These album sessions have spawned two raucous tracks that state where the veteran producers are with their sound. These tracks have the dance floor firmly in mind and display the years of experience Slam have in knowing what exactly will whip up a storm.

Rotary opens the EP with a definite analogue rawness as a storming synth hook leads the track from the offset. Keeping it stripped back the boys allow the hook to bend and evolve over the course of the track, reminiscent of early Hood-esq minimalism. Straight up percussion backs the track and keeps the groove true to Techno.

Catacoustics takes things down a deeper route as low subs rumble while a nicely delayed bell tone reverberates gently in the background giving depth to the track. Strung out percussion flutters in the back as subtle time stretch is applied giving this a trippy and mind melting feel. Slam pull back on the reigns ever so slightly going into the break as yet more subtle builds give tension before firing back with the hypnotic feel essence of the track

Soma400 signals the start of the countdown to the latest Slam album and also shows why they have been in electronic music for over 20 years.

This EP could easily be titled "The Many Flavors Of Taste Peter" as he effortlessly rolls out a variety of styles in this four-tracker.

The journey begins with the aptly titled "Devil Chords" where we are quickly introduced to thick, mutating chords which are clearly taking the center stage here. An extra set is further applied, seamlessly leading the way to a breakdown fortified by an intense breakdown.

On the title track, Taster Peter nods firmly to Detroit with classic, subtle stabs and a nostalgic arpeggio just grazing the surface over the shuffling hats. This one is clearly a number where the melodic elements do the talking. In dubspeeka's rendition we a get a meatier version, with emphatic drums taking control while still maintaining the spacey vibe.

Closing up, "Nocturne" is a subliminal ride in the night (obviously), with sonars going off at all angles, and eerie effects teaming up with tense atmospherics to keep us on our toes. The low end rumble and intricate drum programming make sure that everyone is moving to the dark beat.

Following on from the massive TLB002 which featured some of the most played tracks of last summer including Ossie's Fela Kuti rubdown and ph0tomachine's dusty rnb workout of Musiqs H.E.R, The Love Below has returned with yet another slice of limited edition wax, packed with an eclectic array of soulful sex appeal just in time for summer. First up one of the most exciting UK producers, Eliphino, turns out a killer rerub of a vintage slice off will.i.am. The results are stunning with a slow burning groove and a killer vocal hook working it to the bone. DJ Bone returns to Leftroom this July with a fresh two-tracker entitled 'It's All About'.

Detroit's Eric Dulan, better known as DJ Bone, is a name synonymous with the Techno scene across the globe having headed up his Subject Detroit imprint and worked with pioneering Techno imprint Metroplex since the mid 90's. Here we see Bone return to the Leftroom imprint following his critically acclaimed 'Cultural Variance' EP on the label in December of 2014.

Title cut 'It's All About' kicks off the EP and sees Bone deliver a typically gritty up-tempo workout, laid out over it's five and half minute duration with frenetic stab sequences, raw distorted rhythms and sporadic spoken word breakdown of zealous manner.

On the flip Dulan offers up 'Tipping Point', which retains a similar aesthetic yet employs a softer sound palette with soft chord cycles gradually blooming and retracting across its seven minute duration as the sturdy drums smoothly carry the assimilating groove.

Haunting, ethereal, emotive, propulsive Guy Gerber and Puff Daddy's long-awaited collaborative album project 11 11 will at last be revealed.

At once a meeting of two worlds, and yet also a dismissal of those signifiers, 11 11 inverts the recent dialogue between the worlds of hip-hop and electronic music, eschewing simple radio friendly factory fare, for darker, richer, deeper soundscapes. 11 11 is not a project aimed at main-stages and masses, but outliers and after-hours.

Guy and Puff Daddy's collaboration was not born out of opportunism, indeed it's disruptive of the current main-stage malaise, and was germinated before the current electronic explosion; it's collaborative and combative, an expression of two outsized creative personalities unfettered, unfiltered, fearless, raw, and after four years of work, almost unrealized.

Despite their obvious differences, the duo behind these 11 tracks have crafted an album that feels organic and truthful. Puff Daddy's delicate and understated vocals, Gerber's emotive layering of synths, drums and melodies, 11 11 feels like a nuanced and diverse exploration of whatever powerful force drew these disparate talents together. On paper it's a crazy collaboration, on the ears it's magical.

How an underground Israeli techno producer was cherry picked by Puff Daddy as his partner on this project, says a lot about Guy Gerber, and in turn, about Puff Daddy. One of electronic music's most vibrant and contrarian characters, Gerber possesses one of its most singular contemporary voices, his music is both simultaneously haunting and uplifting, its music that inspires you to dance yet is evidently colored by melancholy.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs is one of hip-hops biggest and most successful stars, but he is no stranger to the electronic music, indeed he was one of the first hip-hop artists to embrace dance music, and has been making annual pilgrimages to Ibiza's DC10 and Miami's WMC for over 10 years. He has recorded electronic records with dance icons like Felix da Housecat, DJ Hell and Erick Morillo and released the much venerated album, 'Last Train To Paris'. '11 11' is the realization of his long-standing desire to create a soundtrack to, as he puts it, 'rooms I don't belong in.'
