Sneaker - Java / Sumatra Ep

Sneaker's first solo EP for Uncanny Valley is a record of high humidity. The Java / Sumatra EP evolved in large parts in Indonesia when Sneaker lived there for almost a year and it literally conveys the Indonesian heat to dance floors in the rest of the world. Compared to his Acid House-inspired "You Think You Think" which was featured on the Uncanny Valley 004 compilation, this four new tracks show another, rather dark, Pop and New Wave side of Sneaker. The "Java Island" side starts with "White Glow" where a serious percussion workout is blended together with the sharp electric guitar by Indonesian guitarist Al Goz. Backed up by Sneaker's typical drum work, Slovakian singer Helena and Sneaker himself are dreaming of that mystical light. In "Misty Mirror", it seems like Sneaker is speaking to his reflection in the mirror and trying to figure out what he is seeing there. The track is as relentless as it is bittersweet with its stumbling dark bass synth and the bell-like melody before the pads bring things to an almost orchestral end. "Sumatra Rain" again features Al Goz, this time on the Bamboo Flute, Guitar and with a poem in West-Sumatran Minang Language. The track can be read as a meditation on the fact that if it rains in Indonesia, it pours. At the same time it is an irresistible dance floor killer that sometimes feels like "I Feel Love" for modern clubs with its ongoing octave bass and an uncompromising kick drum. Eventually, "Run To You" stands in the tradition of love song duets like "Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus". You simply cannot forget this catchy synth melody. This is pop music for people that like Italo Disco and Chicago House and rounds up the EP in a charming way. The artwork is by courtesy of Uncanny Valley regular Robert Arnold aka Cuthead.

The Zars - Some More Dope Remixes

A future nu disco classic from Italy's THE ZARS on Chicago's own SMOOTH AGENT RECORDS. THE ZARS are producers ALEXANDER GIAMPAOLO TESSAROLO & ALESSANDRO LA PADULA. Their sound is somewhere between classic deep house and Nu Disco. We just call this good music. The UK's OOFT! kicks things off with a deep and atmospheric mix with a touch of acid followed by the original mix. B/w a LUMINODISCO remix with a soulful and more organic mix plus the bonus cut "SAXA RUBINA".

Beautiful Swimmers - Son

Future Times is very happy to present Son, the debut full-length release from Beautiful Swimmers! Strictly 4 The Freaks! Limited Edition Double Album...featuring the highly soughtafter 'Big Coast'& 'Swimmers Groove' tracks...HUGE ol TIP!!!!
Nine brand-new tracks and two out-of-print classics from the duo of Ari Goldman and Andrew Field-Pickering (aka Maxmillion Dunbar) that ride together across 2 LPs.

The word "son" calls to mind images of a family, a lineage. And DC's chillest have crafted an LP that represents, more fully than anything on the label prior, a Future Times sound. Tropical, outsider, deep, whatever...this is, more than anything else, a showcase for The Vibe. This is that FT shit in your speakers.

"Son" is also a casual phrase of excitement, a way to remain cool while having your mind blown; it's that wide-eyed look from across the room at a party, pointed at the crew, when the drums come in and smush everything in the vicinity. The sonics on the LP conjure that, too.

Son is a true trip, an hour in the zone that sounds like everything in the duo's record bags happening at once. They're letting it all flow, whether it's real-life skills and improvisation (the grown DX bedroom jazz of "Spezi"), collage (the wrong-speed Italian funk and 808 thrill of "Joyride"), or dancefloor knowledge (the utter euphoria of "Running Over", "Swimmers Groove" and "Big Coast"). Elsewhere, "Easy On The Eyes" sounds like an interlude that barely survived the quiet storm. "Cool 'Disco' Dan" swings and slaps.

Those expecting the LP to stay Beach Ball the whole time will be flattened by the hallucinogenic, borderline-Mego sound design of "Gettysburg" and by "Dream Track," a cold, articulate slice of the paranoid life. And the voices don't stop. "No!" sounds like Yello arguing amongst themselves. Found sounds and vocal experiments from the Swimmers themselves chime in on almost every track, adding a strange dose of humanity to the whole affair, more like Zoolook-era Jean-Michel Jarre than ubiquitous sampled divas, who must be so tired by now.

But above all, every song sounds like the Swimmers. Son is, at its essence, a place where two music freaks managed to fine-tune every sound around them in an attempt to keep summer truly endless. Get in there with them.

Max Graef & Andy Hart - Heavy Setters Ep

Fourth release on the Black Ops sub label from the SLEAZYBEATS crew...

While in Europe for a tour slash trip last year, Andy Hart (of Melbourne Deepcast fame) met up with Max Graef (Berlin's golden boy) in Berlin, they hit it off like Batman and Robin and got dirty in the studio together very successfully.
They've been pinging ideas and tracks back and forth ever since, which led to the duo releasing some awe-inspiring dusty deep house together on Box Aus Holz (Graef's own label), Melbourne Deepcast and recently on Ali Ooft's FOTO imprint.

It didn't take long for the Black Ops camp to cotton on and squeeze the splendid 'Heavy Setters' EP out of this odd couple, the fourth release on the Sleazy Beats offshoot project.

The A side of the record is reserved for 'Biting', the delightful inaugural venture of the EP - and perhaps the most groove-oriented of the bunch.
Set at a leisurely pace, it combines moody, hazy organs with a classic bass and loose woodblock claps. Hart & Graef tease us with some well-placed soul/jazz vocal samples before properly unleashing things at the breakdown with a jazz cat banging on about his take on all things 'hip'.

Flip over for title track 'Heavy Setters', where you'll find the 'full-on and lights off' affair of the EP.
Reaching immediately for the jugular, Heavy Setters pulls you under and doesn't let go for 7 glorious minutes. A repetitive keynote arrives on the kick and remains firmly on display here, while open cymbal highs are cemented within the heavy drums and a sci-fi flashback sample.
Things get ever so deep for a second at the halfway break before kicking back to the nasty. A monster slice of chuggy deephouse that works a real treat on a packed floor.

Also on the B is 'Pass the Mortek', a bongo-laced groover that climbs nicely alongside more open cymbal brass and another crisp organ line. Not too intense but also wary of venturing too deep, Hart & Graef create a killer groove with vocal snips and heavy-ass keys. One of those tunes that is perfect to take a dj set in either direction, right up to the next level or down a notch, depending on mood, vibe etc.
Small pops and crackles from sampling from a dusty turntable add to the overall charm of the record and the lovely lady winking at you from the center sticker seals the deal here.

A great EP then, and a great addition to the Black Ops roster.

The Right Now - Call Girl

The Right Now

Call Girl

12inchDDR003
DEEP & DISCO
22.08.2013

Deep&Disco Recordings presents Chicago-based band The Right Now with 'Call Girl,' a gritty piece of live retro-soul with a package of varied and unique mixes.

The A-side kicks off with Hot Toddy turning the funk up a notch in his characteristically musical way, in a mix that layers new live elements over the original and builds to a dazzling peak. Following that is the original version: a straight-to-tape recording of the band with lush keys, tight rhythm section grooves, horn stabs, and vocals that drip with soul.

Then on the B-side, Dicky Trisco turns in a deep and dubby late-nite disco burner, and label head JKriv takes the tune into old-school house territory with thumping 909 drums and bouncing piano stabs.
Early DJ support from Kon, 6th Borough Project, Lovebirds, OOFT!, Jacques Renault and more...

An infectious bassline, horns, strings, percussions, sing-a-long-chorus and is presented in beautiful way, giving the original enough room to breathe. Flip over for a great re-edit of Meli'sa Morgan's "Fool's Paradise' - funkier than a mosquito's tweeter!

Jacques Renault - Back To You: Remixes

Let's Play House began the first half of 2013 with a single by label co-founder Jacques Renault, and now the guys are kicking off the second with three fresh remixes by international heavyweights Tom Trago, Fantastic Man (a.k.a. Mic Newman), and Francis Inferno Orchestra.

The 12' initiates with Trago's interpretation, which takes most of the infectious and instantly recognizable elements of the original (the thumping drums, the hummed melody) and pumps them up to the next level. Complimenting his maximalist approach is Fantastic Man's pared down rendering, which strips the tune of most its bells and whistles, instead obsessing over the horns and elastic riff that the track is built around. It's a slow burner, but one that will relentlessly, deliberately tear up dancefloors.

The flip features Francis Inferno's spacier take on Renault's work. Like the Paradis mix found on the first single, it launches the song to outer space for a more cosmic exploration, only gently gliding back down to earth at the very end.
Keep an eye out for new material from Renault on LPH, too—there's plenty in more in store!

Garry Todd & Mic Newman - The Shelter Ep

Garry Todd teams up with Mic Newman for Illusion 5 with some proper house music as we like it!! The A-side kicks off with 'The Shelter', a dance floor destroyer with a loving nod to the early 90s New York club, the track has taken its name from. With NY Stomp (ILL003) still fresh in the consciousness, this track takes off from where that left with old school chords, tightly programmed drums, acid riff and hooky 90s vocals. 'Sex, Drugs & Sausage Rolls' is a different recipe all together. Mic and Garry get seriously stuck in, increasing the sleaze, funk and Sausage Roll factor; taking us on a druggy, hypnotic, heads down booty call, reminding us all of those special summer moments that have just passed. On the B-Side Garry flies solo to create another hands in the air summer anthem with 'Swing Down'. With a warm, grooving bass line and beautiful vocal sitting over Garry's trademark old school drums, Garry pulls the heart strings and kicks back to the days of when he lived in Ibiza with a carefree summer track designed for daylight hours and provides a nice antidote to the heads down club tracks of the A-Side. Burnski is on remix duty and stamps his mark on the track by softening up the drums and adding his unique groove, letting the original elements hypnotically sing and dance with the new additions over a the funk of a typical Burnski bass line to create a master piece of remix. Hot!!

Emotional Relish
25.07.2013

Part 3 of the Emotional Relish series sees Robi Insinna's work remixed by a quartet of British producers. Death In Vegas overseer Richard Fearless tackles "Be Loved" starting with an ethereal loop that builds on top of itself before the beat kicks in and the remix heads for the dark (leather) dancefloor. Mr Andy Blake channels the collective spirits of The Slits, The Pop Group and Killing Joke on his space echo laden remix of "Adolescent Sex" whilst Weatherall acolyte Scott Fraser returns to the Relish cause with a typically chugging rendition of "Turning" that has found favour from Croatia boat parties to the catwalks of Paris S/S 2013 no less (check YouTube for evidence). Cosey club founder Richard D Clouston slows down the tempo for a brooding, mind bending take on "Blue Girls".

Rogue Vogue - Say You Will

Rogue Vogue has been making a name for himself as a producer worth keeping an eye on with releases on French Express and remixes on Deep&Disco & French Horn Rebellion. He's finally ready to release his next original EP titled 'Say You Will' on his new home at House of Disco Records.

'Say You Will' includes 2 originals that brim with the joyous side of 90's house backed up with 3 remixes from Dublin Aunts, LeSale and House of Disco's Sixth Avenue Express. The originals are in keeping with each other while each of the 3 remixes bring something new to the table.

First up is the title track, 'Say You Will' which is a hip swaying homage to the sunny side of 90's house with more hooks than a 'Hellraiser' film. Addictive vocal stabs and sax hits are the name of the game as this one will have you digging in your drawer for those stonewashed jeans you'd forgotten about.

The first of the remixes by Dublin Aunts has a day rave written all over it with an epic acid tinged bassline and clever vocal treatments. The second remix by LeSale takes a slower, sexier tip and just grows and grows, leaning heavily on the keys but also introducing some strings into the equation.

Next up is the second original 'More Than Enough' which samples a vocal that many will recognise and makes it his own. A lot of this originals charm is in the lower end and will come to life on the right system. A dreamy breakdown cements this as a track that you'll keep coming back to.

Finally the last remix of the package by Sixth Avenue Express ads a heavy dose of sleaze to the original with a swinging melody line. Choosing to do away with the dreamy breakdown and instead replace it with an dramatic, elongated and memorable dancefloor moment.

Riva Starr - Hand In Hand

Riva Starr

Hand In Hand

CDSNALBCD1301
05.08.2013

RIVA STARR's second album comes 3 years after the critical acclaim of 'If life gives you lemons, make lemonade' (2010)- which spawned the seminal Balkan beat single 'I Was Drunk feat. Noze' now with over 10 million combined youtube views...
Riva has equally graced many different venue lately: from co-headlining the infamous Sensation 2012 events in Amsterdam (with Dennis Ferrer, Mark Knight and Hardwell) and opening for the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Kelis and Jamiroquai in Ibiza, and for Tiesto and Benny Benassi in the States, to regular underground gigs for the likes of Warehouse Project (Manchester), El Row (Barcellona and Ibiza), Cocoon (Frankfurt), Picnik Electronik (Canada), Watergate (Berlin)and Avalon, Betaand Set (USA)
Throw in the mix his very own Snatch! Silent Disco at Creamfields, the Snatch! Arena at Tomorrowlands and the Bateria Fantastica set at We Love... (Ibiza) and what you have is ever more perplexing... A Bricklane based Neapolitan cultural exile with a degree in Chinese literature; a passionate family guy who still manages to juggle a DJ schedule of over 200 gigs a year, a label, remix and production duties
Intriguing... They say you cannot keep a good man down, and as he swings from genre to genre and from fan to fan (over the years he has been praised by the likes of A-Trak to Tiesto, Giles Peterson to Pete Tong, Annie Mac to David Rodigan and almost every one in between) Riva's sound remains truly hard to pin down!
All this, intermingled by remixes for Gossip, Usher, Estelle, Plan B, Lauren Pritchard, Wiley, Fatboy Slim, Marina and the Diamonds, Parov Stellar, Manu Chao, Noze, Dennis Ferrer, Lionrock, Cajmere, Major Lazer, Steve Angelo, Reboot, Azari & III, Malente and many, many more...

Black Rox is back with 2 more sneaky Soft Rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked CD wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. Lead track "Music sounds better with 'fro" is a Stardust aping afro groove exploding into ecstatic, almost house, pianos. This one has been thoroughly road tested by dem Idjut Boys and Soft Rocks themselves... dancefloor detonation guaranteed. On the flip we get more righteous with "Brothers (& Sisters) On The Slide". Funky rollin' drums and a spoken word intro leading into a glorious anthemic song about struggling against the man.

Bruce Ivery - Street Edits Vol 1

Last seen brandishing a pair of Stillove4music releases circa 2009, Bruce Ivery resurfaces in style with the debut release on the newly established Street Edits label. "Clap Your Hands" kicks things off, hogging the A Side with a loopy retro disco style and a bassline that flows like Chic's "Everybody Dance". Face down, Ivery lays out two cuts, opening with an Impact mix of "Mr Paganini" (a possible reference to Ella Fitzgerald) fuelled by synthesisers and pumping drum machines, while the four-four kicks and thumping bassline of "Harlem" - sampling Bill Withers - parades around the track like ballroom dancers stomping and twisting to grungy strings and vamped melodies. If you liked those Stillove plates you'l dig this!

Heinrich Dressel/cestrian - Heinrich Dressel & Cestrian

Heinrich Dressel from Minimal Rome and Ali Renault in his Cestrian guise team up to bring us the latest release on Cyber Dance Records, a split EP featuring 2 tracks from each of them. Side A is Heinrich Dressel's half of the record and kicks off with 'Out Of The Blue', a deep throbbing monster of a jam full of psychedelic synths rumbling and pulsating beneath mesmerising electronic tones. His other track. 'Thru The Fog' ups the tempo and pushes the rock-solid analogue weightiness into a Chicago-esque jack classic that DJs won't be able to resist. The Cestrian half of the record counter-balances Dressel's moody analogue jams with 2 LSD-driven electro-monsters that evoke bleak but somehow lush visions of life in the modern world of concrete and machines. 'Strong Face' with its distinctive audio sampling and dystopian future vibes would surely be just the kind of electro JG Ballard would approve of, while 'Methane Filter' is a tweaked-out electro rocker that sounds like robotic paranoia distilled into soundwaves. If you like your synths cooked to perfection you won't want to miss this!

Is A Mess Made in the basement of an old tram station circa 1990 in a town that was probably London, Hugh Mane's first and only release so far consists of hidden gems on a vintage DAT. Brought to RB's attention via ye olde message board on DJHistory, 'Back Life' is the name of this EP's back bone. A reflexion about golden age deep house, early morning baby powder dreams or epiphanies on strawberry fields. 'Hard To Finish If You're Finish' and 'My Midi Is A Mess' are the continuation of those visions, while 'Fukdemdiscoidkids' via a Tuff City Kids edit is a rough and ready beat track. A Stupid Human effort.

Downtown Sounds - Classics Volume 2

After the success of 'Volume 1', Downtownsounds continue their trawl through the big tunes from their long running nights in Dublin.

Dinosaur's 'Kiss Me Again' is a famed disco collaboration by Nicky Siano, Arthur Russell and Talking Heads' David Byrne, and here it's given a massive overhaul by Pablo and Shoey, with a brand new intro constructed from snatches of the tune's many percussion breaks. Using parts from 3 different mixes to emphasise the epic, Northern Soul tinged torchsong at the centre, and featuring additional edits by Siano himself, this one is a winner!

On the flip we have a much slept on slice of crazed 21st Century afro-psychedelia from Ashley Beedle's Black Science Orchestra project, a 6am groover that breaks all the way down to nothing halfway through, before letting loose with a wild drum solo and a ludicrous horn fanfare that has been known to deliver quasi religious experiences on the dancefloor.... We've seen it with our own eyes!

Small Giants - Deep In It (inc. Pbr Streetgang Remix)

Riding high on the wings of their previous release 'Pulling Strings' on their Red Series, Eclectic Avenue Records bring us REAR002 'Deep In It' by Small Giants.

Small Giants is the wonderfully ingenious marriage between Leeds based label manager Jacob Kelly (J.Cub) and the Chicago house legend Joshua Iz. Combining their skills, they have taken a heady guitar lick, underpinned it with a smoothly infectious bassline and sewn it all together with a warm soothing vocal sample.
Call it house, call it disco. Either way, it's a surefire dancefloor killer and will take pride of place in any DJ or collector's record box.

Flip her over for a remix by Leeds darlings PBR Streetgang. Currently the hottest thing to come out of dance music's unofficial capital, the cheeky duo have put their own twist on the original by filling the track out with some chuggier deeper vibes whilst highlighting the instrumental solos.
A hugely successful foray into a funkier tone for what promises to be another trophy in the E.A.R cabinets

Red Laser Records - Ep2

Red Laser Records returns.Back with more Manctalo !
EP2 is once again limited to 300 and comes on red vinyl with a printed wrap arround inner & pvc sleeve.
First in is a beat heavy analogue chug rework of the rare and weird Italo 7' 'I Am Your Master' by the mysterious Italo connoisseur Savino DJ and DJ Peet Need based in Holland.
The arpeggiating bass line digs a circular trench that gets deeper as the track marches on until you end up stuck on an island with a strange creepy midget man. Music that blurs the line between disco dreams and nightmares
Starion is back for more on EP2. How will he make a heavier track than EP1's 'Another Dimension' By making 'Darkstar'.
Analogue Manctalo Chug at its finest. Big bass line, big synth chords, big vocoder action. You couldn't get more 'dark disco electronic' if you went clubbing with Daleks and the Cybermen were DJing.
Just like Kid Machine, Starion has a great knack for making arrangement and production look easy (which It aint). Watch this space Manctalo heads. Starion is going to make some waves Laird Hamilton would be scared of in 2013.
On EP1 Ste Spandex dropped a great Boogie number with Sarah Bates. This time however is more 'mutating worm like acid wriggler'. 'Edit IV' is a relentless percussive onslaught that seems to scrape any MDMA residue trapped in your veins and gets it circulating again. This means you can get 'off your napper' without spending money on drugs. This is a bit of a taste of what's to come on Ste Spandex's own Red Laser 12' which drops a week or two after EP2 and is choc full of amazing productions.
Finally Kid Machine does it again! 'Pegasus' is so dark and heavy it's like holding a black hole in the palm of your hand and gives the feeling of a retro --future, sci-fi horror score. This really takes you to another place with its atmospheric soundscape. Stimulating the imagination to conjure a murky neon lit future. The future is dark, brilliantly dark !

Dublin born and Manchester based Krystal Klear, resident at the city's renowned Hoya:Hoya night and producer of some of the most compulsive modern disco and boogie of recent years, is set to release his 'Addiction' EP through Rinse on 18th March.

It might seem like something of a curveball for Rinse to be putting out a track rooted in disco, but there's a razor sharp pop edge to 'Addiction' that sits perfectly alongside the smart, soulful and club-friendly mutations of labelmates like Katy B, Brackles and Roska. That said, it's still markedly different to anything Rinse has released to date and furthermore illustrates that Rinse are the go to label for the freshest innovative artists. Here is a deliciously funky slice of modern boogie driven by a fat analogue bassline and swirling strings, all capped off with a towering vocal performance from Jenna G.

In keeping with disco's history as the birthplace of the modern remix and the extended edit, the title track is joined by an extended instrumental edit that blasts the original into deep space. All cosmic string flourishes and robotic synth chatter, it repeatedly explodes from periods of rhythm driven downtime into soaring melodic crescendos, allowing it to work both either as a DJ tool or as a set's highlight in its own right. B-side 'No Sweat', meanwhile, is a slinkier and more romantic companion to the bombast of the title track, with chimes and synthetic strings picking out woozy intertwined melodies above a strutting bassline.^

Metro Area is back! Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani's METRO AREA project laid new ground in 1999 when the first pink and green 12', Metro Area, hit record stores. Environ is proud to present STRAIGHT A's, an analog re-mastered 2x12' package of the first four single's A-sides that started it all. We hope this package opens up Metro Area's sound to a new generation of listeners and DJs, while providing crisp new remasters for MA's original fans.

The Soft Rocks collective feature twice on the upstart Black Rox label with two heavily tribal remixes for a so far unknown artist. The Soft Rocks take on "Filaw" is wrapped in horns and jungle sounds - not too far off a 1970s Brian Jackson and Gil Scott Heron collaboration. On the flip is a possible Talking Heads reference in "Once In A Life Time", which gathers mesmeric African drums and percussion, grooving in harmony to ritualistic chant. A Mohican David Byrne perhaps

Jean Claude Gavri - Grand Edits

Jean Claude Gavri

Grand Edits

12inchCOCOBINWAX003
Coco Bin
24.07.2013

In the Cocobinwax Re Edit series - Jean Claude Gavri returns with a 4 track smasher.
As in the previous 2 Coco Bin Wax releases, these are completely reworked tracks, not just chops and effects but some serious production value added. Tracks are ranging from 115-117rpm.
The opening killer track "The Hangover" is a Dirty, Grainy, Percussive Instrumental rub of the "Love Hangover", classic picktime hands in the air disco monster.
"I Did You" is A sleazy play-on-word on "I Dig You" - originally by Demis Roussos. Here as well, the vibe is raw & grainy to fit the sleaze of the original, with loads of percussive layers and a phat bumpy kick.
"All Around The World", originally "I Love You Dancer" by Voyage, is a solid, straight forward touch up of this Euro Disco Rarity. The structure is pretty faithful to the original track, as well as JCG's sound choices. Delicious, proper vocal relief to a proper DJ set.
"Mental Chains" gives a twist to the plot. Originally titled "New Song" - this was the debut hit single for one man band Howard Jones back in 1983. If JCG's Euphoric instrumental is taking the track to a new level, DJs this is a very powerful weapon you got here, use it wisely.
