From their humble start, file-sharing musical ideas and producing their first album in separate countries during the dawn of the internet, Novalima is now a live musical force revered worldwide for breaking boundaries and uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities, and generations. They have created an inspiring movement and revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru by bridging a longstanding divide between the mainstream and the minority Afro-Peruvian community, who have struggled against discrimination and cultural dissolution for generations.

Over the last two years, Novalima created their newest offering,Planetario to be releasedJune 16th onWonderwheel Recordings. The album's name signals Novalima's musical growth and international connections - much of the album was recorded on tour when they collaborated with top local and international musicians. There is a strong connection toColombia created through a remarkable recording session inBogota organized by members ofLa-33 includingSidestepper vocalistEka Muñoz,Pernett andLa Mamba Negra. The album also has offerings from global artists such asMarc de Clive Lowe (UK/NZ),Panko fromOjos de Brujo(Spain), andKumar(Cuban rapper based in Barcelona).

The album's debut single, "Como Yo" (to be releasedMay 19th on digital single and 7" vinyl) honors the legendary Peruvian percussionist and longtime band memberMangue Vasquez who passed away in 2014. Not one for sentimentality, Mangue implored his friends to celebrate his life with song and dance when he passed rather than shed any tears. The life affirming lyrics are underscored by rolling percussion, twinkling synths, and a celebratory sing-song chant chorus:Gozen la vida como yo -Enjoy life, like I do.

Tin Fist is being issued on vinyl for the first since its 2007 original release date. The vinyl includes two never before heard bonus tracks 'Shoot The Moon' and 'Sleepwalking'. The Acorn, led by Rolf Carlos Klausener, is very thoughtful, deliberate and at times haunting. Think of the best of worlds encompassed by Bright Eyes, Under Byen and Bruce Springsteen and a song like the dark, mysterious and hushed "Heirlooms" immediately comes to life. Soft and melodic before slowly gaining a harder tone, the track morphs into a tension-filled coda that never breaks through the surface. And while Tin Fist might only be a eight-song EP, this song exemplifies the strength of the effort. "Dents (Glory, Pt.1)" has a distinct folksy nature that gently pushes it along, resembling a fine Appalachian tune that might have been attempted in Wilco's earlier incarnations. Following a warm "Brokered Heart" which has ample twists and turns, the Acorn show another side of themselves with the melodic pop oozing out of "Feral Chile" that sounds like XTC influenced by dance-rock. Carrying on this momentum is the joyful "Spring Thaw" that has the same bounce and panache as songs by the Diableros and the Arcade Fire. - (Taken from a Pop Matters review)

Remixes f/African house legend Boddhi Satva w/deep & entrancing Ancentral Soul remix. Spy From Cairo gives "Nuban Uttu" a dubby dancehall re-rub, & Nickodemus takes "Rennat" into late night house territory.

Recorded in Antwerp and on location, 2010 - 2014. 'Songs Of Gold' are nine small portraits. Five tracks that where featured on the cassette versions PLUS four extra tracks for this vinyl version. Culled from compilations, limited run cassette releases, choreographies, and 7" singles. Some pieces were worked on for a length of time, others materialized in just about one take. All the songs are derived by an encounter with an object, a place or a person. Or by a combination of these. The events are translated into the work through the intermediary of symbolic sounds and notes. There is no thematic link between the compositions.

Rudeboyz are Massive Q, Andile-T and Menchess from Durban. They make Gqom (or Gqomu or Igqom), raw, dark and hypnotic South African house music rooted in the townships of Durban, and shared with the world via the internet and social media. Gqom blares out at makeshift clubs, taxis and shopping malls, it is THE music in Durban. Gqom roughly translated from Zulu to 'Bang' or 'Hit' - It's uncompromising and stripped back music geared for the dancefloor. This EP has been a long time coming. Internet in Durban is woeful, which explains why a lot of tunes are at lower bit rates and equally why this release has been so long in the making. The EP opens with Get Down - the most direct and punishing of the four tracks with a punching synth and unrelenting kicks that do not deviate from their rhythm or their cause. Mercedes Song and Mitsubishi Song are odes to legendary presses of the pills that fuel the parties that run through the night. They roll for six unsettling minutes a piece - a long ominous drone underpinning the pounding beats. On Mercedes Song TD Snax adds to the unease as he shouts and yelps in Zulu: Yaze yangibamba weeh yaze yangibamba' - "This Mercedes has got me so high, this is my Mercedes.' Mitubishi Song, one of the biggest Gqom tracks of 2013, mirrors this unease switching between cascading toms and jolting, stuttering rhythms, cowbells and bird tweets. Sambuka Dance is an ode to a very different poison and its disorientating arrangement is reminiscent of its effects. A jarring, angry chant harasses incessantly transforming the track into a full body experience. As Jumping Back Slash eloquently put Gqom feels like music you've been listening to for years'. It is a ghostly cousin of sounds it touches on - brash, abrasive music with no inhibitions. These four tracks were handpicked from a vast catalogue of tunes from Rudeboyz built up over the last couple years.

Yes, the highly anticipated album from Slum Village is ready to hit your ears. Late '70s Deep Miami Disco Remixed by Kenny Dope. Includes Download Card For Remixes AND Original Versions. This is the first official reissue of Pazazz's deep disco two sider, originally released as an obscure, promotional-only 7' single in South Florida circa 1980. And, while it took nearly two years, this 12' contains the excellent Kenny Dope's remixes of both tracks. Naturally, Kenny brought the funkiest parts of each track to the fore and, while they're DJ friendly, they're now our preferred way to listen to these tunes. We're using this as an excuse to relaunch our Soul Cal series (though fans of our physical releases will note that there was a Soul Cal logo on the Split Decision Band 7" we recently issued). Hopefully we'll have more of these types of records to reissue in the future. Tony Castellanos (guitar and vocals) and Tim Boynton (bass and vocals) founded the Zanzibar band in Miami, Florida, in 1974 for gigs at
the Bahia Cabana Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, with the addition of Rick Gritz (drums and vocals). Inspired by the likes of Bill Withers and Steely Dan, Zanzibar played a soulful series of club dates and private parties as well as a their requisite beach hotel gigs at Miami area staples like the Fontainebleau, the Eden Rock and the Marco Polo hotel. In the late 70s, Castellanos changed the name of the band to Pazazz and, while the band was working for the Norwegian Cruise Line, he penned the band's first single So Hard To Find.' This and The Right One,' written by interim drummer Al Varon, who played on the single, were recorded and readied for release on a silver Pazazz label, complete with picture sleeve. It wasn't until Castellanos received five hundred copies of the single that he realized that the record was flawed. He demanded a second press run - this time issued on a red Pazazz label - but it too was, in Castellanos opinion, flawed. So the band decided against any sort of release, opting to gift copies of both versions to fans at their gigs.
The band split in 1981 and forgot about their single until Los Angeles record collector Mike Vegh found a random copy of the record and, impressed by the steady funk of Pazazz's soulful disco, tracked down Castellanos and brokered the purchase of the last remaining copies of his records. Vegh connected us with the man and we're happy to represent Pazazz's small, but great, catalog on this special 12'.

RIYL: Rachel's, Loscil, Max Richter, Johan Johansson. // Rachel Grimes is a pianist, composer, and arranger based in Kentucky - most renowned for her work in Rachel's, the groundbreaking chamber-rock ensemble that introduced an entire generation of underground rock fans to the unexpected similarities and appeal of neoclassical music. Grimes has toured the world as a solo pianist, and as a collaborator with chamber ensembles such as Portland Cello Project, astrïd, Cicada, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta trio, and Orchestra Kandinskij. Unhurried, at times fleeting, and stretching into the sky, The Clearing is a winding path of transient moments exploring personal memory, relationships, and mystery from a deeply internal place. The music is a wide spectrum of textures in strings, harp, piano, woodwinds, and percussion. Following Book of Leaves (2009), the Marion County 1938 DVD/EP (2011), the Compound Leaves EP (2013), and an album with King's Daughters & Sons (2011), this new full-length album reveals a broad new chapter for Rachel Grimes. Several composed pieces evolved from improvisation, such as In the Vapor', The Clearing', and Further Foundation'. Others include captured improvisation: album highlight The Herald', recorded live with Jacob Duncan on saxophone and Helen Money on cello, and The Air at Night', a late-night meditation at a recording session in Antwerp. The title track, The Clearing', was recorded with members of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta following a series of performances for CrossLinx Festival in spring of 2013. After the joy of working together, Grimes proposed a long-distance recording session. Evolving from a single repeated piano note, The Clearing' begins tense and dissonant with the string trio and piano eventually arriving at a moment of relief and grace - a light in the forest - and then returning again to the material of the opening. Transverse Plane' was designed for SITI Company of New York for an actor training stage exercise. In two sections, the piece uses a pre-existing architecture of tempo and underlying compositional structure. The first part - Vertical' - is a driving, orchestral texture of
strings, harp, piano, oboe and saxophone with Kyle Crabtree (Shipping News) on mixed percussion. The second half - Horizontal' - unfolds from a mist of strings with slow-moving chords and features Christian Frederickson (Rachel's) in an angular and expressive viola solo. Inspired by the wind and sky, The Airs' feature violinist Scott Moore. Written with a single theme and mode, the suite becomes a connective tissue for the album's various textures. In perhaps the album's most vital collaboration, Scott Morgan (aka LOSCIL) provides the delicate processing and additional depth of field that invites outsiders to enter this fluid space for their own experience.

It was in the Disco era of the mid-1970s that Hot Chocolate became a big success. A combination of high production standards, the growing confidence of the main songwriting team of Tony Wilson and Erroll Brown, and tight harmonies enabled them to secure big hits such as You Sexy Thing' and Every 1's A Winner'.

Hot Chocolate enjoyed an enthusiastic following in England, and in the U.S., Hot Chocolate had two major hits: You Sexy Thing' in 1975 and Every 1's a Winner' in 1978. That Rock-influenced Soul gem is the opener on the group's fourth album, which is also titled Every 1's A Winner. The track listing is solid, including the moving ballad Sometimes It Hurts to Be a Friend' as well as the message song Love Is the Answer One More Time' and the moody Euro-disco number Put Your Love in Me.'

This is a Soul-Funk album that isn't afraid to draw on British Pop/Rock influences like David Bowie and Elton John. Nor were Hot Chocolate afraid to incorporate Afro-Caribbean influences - Confetti Day,' for example, could be described as an interesting marriage of reggae, Bowie, and Stax/Volt.

With their debut "Invisible Joy" the Polyversal Souls are ready to take off. Analog Africa to release a compilation by Amara Toure, the enigmatic Afro-Cuban musician from Guinea-Conakry, showcasing all of the 10 songs he ever released between 1973 and 1980.
"Latin music, is it really foreign to us Africans I don't think so. Listen to the drums, to the rhythm. It all seems very close to us - it feels like it's our own culture," declared enigmatic singer Amara Toure. It is the late 50s, and Senegal is going crazy to the groove of Son Montuno and Patchanga. Brought to West Africa by Cuban sailors in the early 40s, these styles were immediately adopted by a flourishing music scene that did not hesitate to embrace the Caribbean sound, mixed it with their own Folklore, and, in the process, created something new. Through the unique cultural fusion of West African and Caribbean influences, Latin music took on a new and unique sound - the format was reinvented. Producer Ibra Kasseì and his Miami nightclub acted as the spearheads of this movement. They brought a breath of fresh air into Dakar's nightlife, further energising one of West Africa's most exciting cities. The demand for ballroom parties and live acts exploded, attracting numerous musicians from surrounding countries. One of the musicians who answered this call was percussionist and singer Amara Toureì, from Guinea-Conakry. Spotted by Kasseì while performing with Dexter Johnson, Toureì was asked if he would like to be part of a new project. Little did he know that this project would become a phenomenon.Immensely important for the development of Senegalese modern music, Le Star Band de Dakar, led by Mady Konate, became a sort of musical incubator and workshop, where many musicians learned and practiced their trade before moving on to become stars in their own right. Toureì's talent on percussion was undeniable, but it was his powerful and raw voice that captivated the producer. The fascinating way Toure interpreted Cuban music was unparalleled, and it was this feature that encouraged Kasse to recruit the unknown artist.
Although already brimming with incredible talent, Amara Toure's joining of Le Star Band de Dakar in 1958 began the band's meteoric rise to the top. The band quickly became Dakar's number one orchestra, and it cemented the reputation of the Miami nightclub as the hottest spot in the country. The place was packed nightly, and Dakar was boiling.
Amara Toure's Senegalese adventure lasted for ten years when he received an irrefutable offer and in 1968, joined by a few talented Senegalese musicians, headed to Cameroon and immediately formed the Black and White ensemble. Many live gigs later and it was time for the first songs to be recorded. A total of three singles were produced between 1973 and 1976. These singles, representing the first six songs on this compilation, fully epitomise and distill the essence of what Toureì had learned during his career. His Mandingue roots fused with the Senegalese sound that he had mastered - the perfect foundation for the Toureì's Cuban interpretations.
If Toure's intention was to create the most sensual music ever recorded in Africa, he might very well have reached this goal. The musicians on the recording sound like they are playing in a smokey, poorly lit juke joint, where dark rum was sipped ever so slowly, and the pulse of the music took up a life of its own. How many couples have danced, swayed, and melted together to the distinct sound of Amara Toure Nobody can say for sure ...
Amara Toureì's success poured across the borders of Cameroon, and in 1980 he went to Libreville, Gabon, to team up with the powerful Orchestre Massako. Toureì recorded an LP at that time which is hailed by many music aficionados as one of the very best African albums. The songs from that LP are the last four on this compilation. It took only ten songs for Amara Toureì to become a legend. These ten treasures, representing Toure ìs complete discography, have been carefully re-mastered from original session tapes and vinyl records, and will be released by Analog Africa on 22 June 2015. After the release of his LP in 1980, Toureì seems to have disappeared. Apparently he was last seen in Cameroon but it is unknown if he is still alive today. His music though is definitely alive.

Less than a year after the release of their debut album, Blondie were reaching their peak as a pop-punk band. They played almost everything from that self-titled debut LP at these two shows in San Francisco in September 1977, as well as previewing most of their follow-up, 1978's Plastic Letters. The performance, Broadcast on KSAN-FM, also includes surprise covers of songs by the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Runaways, Doors, and Iggy Pop that did not make their studio releases.

Ginger Johnson's life is one of the greatest untold stories of African music in Europe. Born George Folunsho Johnson in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria in 1916. Aged just 18 he joined the Nigerian Navy, and made his first visit to Britain. After World War II Ginger decided to make London his home, working with many artists including British saxophone legend Ronnie Scott who first really utilised Gingers amazing technique to full effect, featuring him in not only his live concerts, but also several recordings for the Esquire jazz label in the 1940's & 50's.

In the 60's Ginger was mentor & guru to a young Fela Kuti. Gingers London home became a vibrant hub of African music activity for Fela and an entire host of musicians who would gather there to exchange news, talk, eat and jam for hours on end. To Fela, and all who gravitated towards Ginger's home, he was simply known and addressed as 'Father'.

Aside from his music, Ginger was something of a social activist. Not only was he a musical educator, and instrumental in the beginnings of The Notting Hill Carnival, he also opened his own venue Club Iroko in Haverstock Hill, North London, which was a creative hub for groups like Osibisa, and also a welcoming hang out for visiting legends like Sun Ra, George Clinton and Funkadelic, and British group Cymande (3 members of Cymande cut their teeth playing in Gingers group).

Ginger and his group performed at The Royal Variety Performance, his music featured in the James Bond film 'Live & Let Die' and Ginger himself appears on screen drumming in the Hammer Films cult classic 'She'. As a session musician he played for a bewilderingly wide range of acts such as Georgie Fame, Osibisa, Madeleine Bell and Quincy Jones. Ginger & his group also collaborated with many early rock bands such as Hawkwind, Argent, Thunderclap Newman, Genesis and Little Free Rock.

Michael Fahres' 'Tibataje' is an evocative piece of modern experimental music, playing around with and commenting on performance, natural sound and natural echo. It was performed on the Island of El Hierro in front of the Risco de Tibataje massif by three drummers and later processed by Fahres in the studio. It is rhythmically varied and allows natural sound and natural echo to be an essential part of the performance and compositional processes. The 'Tibataje' composition has a subdued feel that can provoke the impression of it being a reaction on the art of field recording. Given the religious nature of the rhythmic influences used, 'Tibataje' also has an abstracted ritualistic feel, with the ritual linking up directly with nature and natural phenomena. Michael Fahres was born in Bamberg, Germany on 15 April 1951. He studied Germanic Philology, Theater Sciences and Philosophy, before studying electronic music at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht and composition at the Music Conservatory in Amsterdam. He has worked in the electronic music studios of Steim and Sonology, in the Erlangen computer studio and in the CEM studio which he also managed from 1976 until 1998. He has composed numerous works and has released on labels such as ECM, Valves and Trikont. His 2007 album 'The Tubes' on Cold Blue Music features a contribution by Jon Hassell.

Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound Sytem, Selector Dub Narcotic, The Hive Dwellers) recorded one of his singles. Angelo is a fierce guitar player and an Echoplex master, he is pretty much the only live Echoplex player in the world and is currently writing a whole series of pieces for Echoplex to be performed live!

Ogoya Nengo was born in 1943. Her vocal abilities were discovered when she was herding cattle, as she never attended school, though nowadays her professional name signals both the Magoya clan of her birth and — 'nengo' meaning 'price' in Luo — the fees she commands as the most expensive Dodo performer on the circuit.

One night in 2011 King Midas Sound's Roger Robinson returned to Brixton from touring and inadvertently walked into the centre of the London riots. Through the flames and smoke he felt compelled to tell the stories of the people he saw rioting on the street that night. With disrupt's dub soundtrack highlighting the triumphs and tribulations in the lives of the people of Brixton, the album unfolds like a documentary film, extending from the epicentre of the riots and rippling out from there.
