Ralf GUM proves again with his new album that there is constancy - and consistency - to be found in this fast-moving world. In amongst a flood of half-baked, plastic-sounding music, his soulful sound almost seems like an anomaly. 'Never Leaves You' is testament to the fact that Ralf GUM has stayed true to his roots and his particular, well-honed style. Never one to skimp on the perfection of his arrangements, or sacrifice artful production to follow the latest trends, this album is his opus.
Since the start of Ralf GUM's musical career, he's tirelessly praised the importance of real songs, as opposed to simple, dancefloor-oriented productions and his new outing is homage to 'the song'. While many categories and styles could be foisted on it as a description, 'dancefloor soul music' is probably the best summation of the long-player. Featuring an extensive list of top musicians, the music on the album is far from the average programmed dance 'track'. And the impressive list of vocalists on the record means that, while it's absolutely dancefloor-relevant, it'll also warm the hearts of home listeners.
These vocalists include some huge-hitters, such as two-time Grammy Award-winning British R&B and soul singer Caron Wheeler, who gained fame writing and singing the lead vocals on two of Soul II Soul's biggest hits, "Keep on Movin'" and "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)". Her collab with Ralf - entitled 'So Good' - is her first ever real House track and is evidence of her outstanding talent. Monique Bingham (with whom Ralf recorded 'Kissing Strangers' in 2008 - the best-selling house track of the year on Traxsource) proves on 'Take Me To My Love' that she's still the first lady of deep lyrics in House music, while Oluhle (who was born in Zimbabwe and won the Zimbabwean Achievers Award for Best Female Artist in 2011) really makes her presence felt in such royal company. Ditto Canadian Jaidene Veda, who's already seduced a number of heavyweight producers and countless listeners around the globe with her breathy voice.
The male faction of singers includes 'the voice of house music', Robert Owens, who features on 'Fly Free', the first single taken from the album which was a huge hit on download charts and playlists across the planet. Furthermore, 'the king of Gospel House', Kenny Bobien, contributes two songs to the album, and Kafele delivers his second joint outing with Ralf, following their highly successful 2010 release 'Complicated'. In addition to these, Ralf GUM has recorded with one of France's finest voices Jocelyn Mathieu, who gained fame for his releases on Vega Records and collaborated with highly talented soul singer, Jon Pierce. He completes a list of sterling singers that just prove Ralf's relevance as one of the most sought-after international soulful house producers. This new long-player showcases the growth of this incredible artist, who never compromised and never left his signature style. Ten songs in which there's much to hear and feel. The music abounds in soul; it's jaunty and deep simultaneously. Combining traditional and contemporary elements whilst still being futuristic, it's well crafted enough to Never Leave You.

After 2010's 'Tuning Echoes' Mock & Toof return with their second album entitled 'Temporary Happiness'. Previous vocal collaborators Pollyester & Gavin Gordon are replaced by young Swiss artist Ghostape who features on half of the 10 tracks, the remainder being instrumentals.

Just over a year ago, in July 2011, Harmless Records released their first installment in their new Mixology series, releasing Mixology-The Definitive Salsoul Mixes. This triple album featured thirty-one tracks from disco's premier label, Salsoul. Now the Mixology series will return on 20th August 2012, with Harmless Records turning their attention to another of disco's most important labels SAM Records. Mixology-Sam Records Extended Play is released on 3 different vinyl samplers featuring edits by the likes of Todd Terje, 6th Borough Project, Maxxi Soundsystem & Soul Clap. Before I tell you about the highlights of Mixology-SAM Records Extended Play, I'll tell you about the history of Sam Records.
When Sam Weiss founded SAM Records in Long Island City, New York in 1976, he was something of a veteran of the music industry. He'd been involved in the music industry since the late forties, when he and his brother Hy founded Parody Records. Although the company wasn't a commercial success, and soon folded, the Weiss brothers persevered. Eight years later, in 1954, they founded Madison Records, which was primarily a vehicle for releasing R&B records. Soon, Madison was releasing soul, doo wop, pop, rock, soul and gospel. Madison continued right through until the late seventies. By then, Sam Weiss had founded another record label, Sam Records, which he specifically setup to cash in on disco's popularity.

This latest EP from UK punk-funk outfit Gramme represents the final release in the run up to the debut album due out this November. The EP opens with Girls Talk, which witnesses the band occupying curious new territory with lead vocalist Sam Taylor's playground taunt playing hard-to-get with am addictive groove.Next up is Face To Face which is the sound of Gramme at the wheel mixing in the spookiness of David Byrne and Brian Eno voodoo jamming. It's Magic performs a welcome surprise by mixing lo-slung funk with a bubble pop vocal. The EP comes to a shuddering grand finale with Two Minds - the most electronic track to date mixing dreamy vocals with cut back spikes of machine funk - this is the sound of Gramme's very own production team getting sweaty in a late night studio session in deep, dark SE London. There is simply no denying it. It's official: Gramme are back.

Chicken Lips are back with a new release on Southern Fried Records. D.R.O.M.P (Don't Rain On My Parade) is a disco inspired groove that draws on the NYC eighties vibe that has always been at the heart of the Lips work, with guest vocalist Charmaine making up the line up on this outing.
It comes with a stunning set of remixes, as always Andy from the Lips has created an Emperor Machine interpretation that's darker and more cosmic than its original, Dean does the same job under his The Rhythm Odyssey moniker, providing a jerky acidic house dub for the deeper floors. Old pal Headman turns in his classic slo-mo tight grooves, new kids Amine Edge & Dance go deep as you like in the same vein as their Diynamic releases and finally SFR favourite Sona Vabos delivers one of his finest remixes to date, with this bouncy floor filler.
In 1999 Andrew Meecham and Dean Meredith formed Chicken Lips. The original idea was to seek underground salvation and immerse themselves in the musical styles that they grew up with and loved. Together they also made up the seminal early nineties dance act Bizarre Inc who scored 3 top ten national hits, toured the world and worked with some of the biggest names around, delivering genre defining remixes along the way.
2003 saw brethren Stevie Kotey join the lips, with Stevie on board to fulfill DJ and tour duties and help compile the now classic DJ Kicks for !K7. In 2005 the final piece of the jigsaw was added in the form of long time friend and collaborator Jonny Spencer aka Jonny Tonic. This is when they created the masterpiece 'He Not In', a track that has been played the world over, and described as 'the bass line that changed House Music' and 'A game changer'. Its dubhouse sound did make a big impact on the scene and continues to work on the floor today, inspiring many of the bassline led deep house that's taken over the world!
As well as working under the Chicken Lips moniker they also record together as Big200, Zeefungk & Randee Jean. Solo projects include The Rhythm Odyssey/Mind fair/White light Circus (Dean), The Emperor Machine/ Sir Drew/Grand Corporation (Andy). Their approach to production is quite simply unique! Andy is an avid collector and owner of some of the most sought after synthesizers known to man. His studio is more akin to a synthesizer museum rather than studio hub. Dean is a seasoned Producer/programmer & DJ with an acute eye for detail.
Their debut album 'Echoman' was in many ways ahead of it's time drawing on eighties NYC influences. It sounds as current now (if not more so) than what it did back in 1999. The second album 'Extended play' includes the underground hit single 'He Not In'. 'Making Faces' was the third released in 2006 with vocalist Jonny spencer and a final fourth LP 'Experience Of Malfunction' on their Lipservice imprint. Since then the collective has been busy with solo projects, making babies and touring all over the world. Now the original dynamic production duo of Andy Meecham & Dean Meredith are ready to unleash their new Audio carnival on your ears!.

Zafsmusic.com continues to bring you the rarest disco & boogie bangers with his new compilation titled 'Private Wax' Vol 1. 15 scintillating excursions into the deep disco & boogie world of privately pressed & produced gems. Zaf Zafsmusic is a disco weasel of the highest order. He has, by his own admission, got it bad-losing sleep and suffering physical maladies from the want of certain must-have pieces of stamped vinyl. Fortunately, he also has excellent taste and a lengthy history of wheeling and dealing with other similarly afflicted individuals, a history that has allowed him to sift the wheat from the crap, err, chaff, as it were. As a long-time staffer of the notorious Reckless Records on Berwick Street, a hotbed of vinyl commerce in the Soho section of London, these skills were no doubt put to the test on a daily basis when dealing with the continuous influx of hustlers hoping to offload their by-and-large worthless wax at the shop. Faced with this parade of the common and shoddy, it takes a keen eye to single out the precious stones buried in the seemingly endless expanse of decent-but-ordinary (not to mention the middling-to-awful) records that comprise most collections. Our stalwart selector has also travelled an even more treacherous terrain: the world of online sellers. Without recounting any gory digital battle stories, suffice it to say that the online world inhabited by some vinyl obsessives is a rather scary place. It is without any sarcasm that I offer my sincere gratitude to Zaf for the yeoman's work he has put in discovering the tunes herein. So, while I still encourage all neophyte disco enthusiasts to get themselves a firm grounding in the classics before attempting to swim in the uncharted waters of small-label, independent releases, if you are ready to do so then Zaf is your man. Like some ancient mariner of disco, with this collection he has artfully navigated from haven to haven, avoiding the immense Sargasso Seas of medio

Along the way they hooked up with legendary DJ/Producer, Dimitri from Paris who met them through Louie Vega in New York, Dimitri went on to produce their 'Venezuela Superpop' album as well as featuring the outfit on his own recordings. Now the Los Amigos Invisibles/Dimitri pairing is back for a brand new single on Germany's leading eclectic electronic label Gomma.'Glad to Know You' was originally a big hit for funk heavyweight & Ian Dury collaborator Chaz Jankel in 1982, now Los Amigos Invisibles and Dimitri From Paris take up the reigns with a cover version that is both true to the original and unique. Heavily delayed drums, warm bass and swirling FX roll around the funk laden guitar licks, uplifting keys and infectious vocals to create an instant floorfilling classic. Porto based producer Social Disco Club was sat on the track for two years before Miss Bee added her dusky vocals. Frayed and taught with emotion, her voice works in harmony with the gritty analogue sounds that drive the track.Where the original demands attention, the instrumental version shows a more subtle route to the floor. Tucked away on the b2, the absence of the full vocal allows the weighty drums and Detroit influences to come to the fore. With space to breathe the elements of the track begin to shine; restrained pads become expansive and the gurgling bass line rises to the fore. But now a couple of DJÉs have got the song by the scruff of the neck to produce their own remixes of this song. These include A-Trak, Madeon, TheFatRat, Maison and Dragen and even Solveig himself.A-Trak is a Montreal born DJ who is pretty big on both the electro-house and hip-hop scenes; you probably know him mostly as half of Duck Sauce. From the start of this remix, it sounds very similar to the original but with a more intense main beat. The vocals are still the main body of the build ups and transitions; but then I heard the drop. Australian born, but clearly Italian Casanova by name and nature, The Prodigal Son of Funk has a gift for furnishing our senses with sexy, sensuous and soulful beats. His mix tapes have reputedly salvaged more failing relationships than Dear Deirdre, while his own productions are the epitome of modern day audible erotica.

Rocco's latest 'On The Rocks' EP, served up on the ever-flourishing House of Disco label, is nothing short of the perfect amorous soundtrack - four stunning reworks that will get your labido hornier than James Brown on an aphrodisiac.
First up is 'Keep On Keeping On' turning idle small talk into welcomed Whispers. Up next is 'Love Glow' which pays homage to The Pendletons' 'Waiting On You', turning this rare 7' classic into a slow jam that's ready for the long haul.
Then to really get the juices going is 'Go On And Fly', a beautiful mid-temp reincarnation of Les McCann & Eddie Harris' 'Go On And Cry', again highlighting Rocco's love for orchestral compositions. Another great 12' compilation from the Balearica camp featuring four more wonderful eclectic rarities. Kicking things off we have a funky slice of über-rare classic 80s French boogie in the form of J.M. Black's superb 'Lipstick' closely followed by Kitty Grant's mega-dope version of the Chaz Jankel classic 'Glad To Know You', first pressed back in 1983 and now extremely hard to find. The flipside features two more in-demand dancefloor gems starting with Saada Bonaire's fantastically Balearic new-wave cut 'You Could Be More As You Are'. Originally released in Germany in 1984, it dishes up mesmerising female vocals and an ice-cool reggae-esque groove provided by legendary UK dub producer Dennis Bovell. Last up is one of the champions of mellow grooves - Leo Sunshipp's 'Give Me The Sunshine'. Quality stuff!

Our sweet little offspring, the new series under the roof of our beloved Audiolith label, is growing slowly but steadily. The Stiff Little Spinners are in town to spread the word all over the place. A 3D sculptor born to parents that were also heavily involved with art, she moved from her home in Izmir Turkey to study in New York. There she met the Wolf + Lamb duo, quickly moving into the infamous Marcy Hotel and immersing herself into the colourful creative worlds of music and art. Her light installations have been featured at destinations as diverse as Lily Allen's Lucy in Disguise vintage clothing store in London, cult art festivals in her homeland of Turkey and have taken her on many pilgrimages to the vast deserts of Nevada for Burning Man. In fact Zev (the Wolf of the duo) bought her the first set of LEDs for the festival. An installation is also a permanent fixture at the Marcy.
