Optimo - Dark Was The Night

Melancholic techno, space out house, minimal wave and
bittersweet synth pop shows Optimo's diversity.
27 samples of music been once included on the Voyager Golden phonograph records that launched into space with both Voyager spacecrafts in 1977. They been aboard to represent the diversity of life on Earth for any intelligent extraterrestrial life who may find them in the interstellar space, the region between stars where the galactic plasma is present. Among the sounds and images selected to portray the culture on Earth is also Blind Willie Johnson's song "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground'. He is around to represent the human expression of loneliness and as his music went on to leave the solar system Blind Willie Johnson died decades before penniless of malaria fever after sleeping bundled in wet newspapers in the ruins of his house that had burned down. A tragic story that moves the heart and soul of Jonnie Wilkes and Keith McIvor real deep. The two lads from Glasgow, Scotland are globally famed as DJs, label-heads, producers, remixers, party throwers, and partygoers under their moniker Optimo. For both the story of Blind Willie Johnson and his song is a moving tale that exemplifies the power of music. Now it guided them on their trip towards their sixt offical dj mix that runs under the header - Dark Was The Night'. - We wanted to make a mix cd of "dark" music but without resorting to cliche about what "dark" music is. Each mix cd we have done reflects a different part of the night and this mix is our attempt to invoke the sounds of a dark winter's night but at the same time we feel the music is far from being "cold" and "soulless" and is full of atmosphere and feeling.' the Sub Club resident DJs reveal about their intentions behind a mix that covers artists like Berlins dark techno Newcomer Recondite, native Detroit techno misfit Terrence Dixon, New York City minimal wave veterans Jeff & Jayne Hudson, or the late seventies Scotish punk band The Freeze. A selection of heterogene musical approaches that sound homogene in any second of the dramatic suspense that Optimo created. In their night not only the smiling faces crowd the floor. The sad and lonely dance too to soulful, transcendent music of the spheres. When you want to top their mix down in styles again Optimo go the genre spanning way: melancholic techno, space out acid house, minimal wave, or even bittersweet synth pop call the tune to represent the diversity of sounds and emotions that a dark dancing night can offer. A mix that would perfectly fit on one of those Voyager Golden phonograph records. It could tell all extraterrestrials and future humans who find it that the humans of the now are able to dance to the deepest haunting sounds without loosing their sense and sensibility.

"To Be Clear" is the third single coming out of Moullinex's highly acclaimed debut album "Flora". Mixmag gave it a 10/10 and wrote that "'To Be Clear'" is a perfect pop record" We couldn't agree more. For this 12" remix Discotexas called in RAC, Kraak and Smaak and Zimmer to deliver three new aproaches to the song. While RAC take it a bit further in the electro-pop camp, Kraak & Smaak go on the another direction into the realms of deep house and Zimmer wraps it up into a nu disco stomper.

The Very Polish Cut-outs - Sampler Volume 2

The Very Polish Cut-Outs crew is back with more goodies.
After 'Krystyna' by Ptaki, the label's most successful release so far, Zambon & Kapsa bring you another sampler, filled with great grooves from Poland's rich musical past. The most recent TVPC offering is curated by two Norwegian heroes and one lesser-known, but equally talented Pole.

The A side contains two emotional tracks by big-name Polish singers, reworked with class by Chlopak z Sasiedztwa from Poznan.
The female fronted cut 'Moja Muzyka To Ja' has an anthem-like quality with a heavy, Bohannon-like discofunk groove and a passionate vocal in Polish. The catchy original was extended and reworked into a long, DJ friendly version.
The final offering is 'Dbaj O Micosc', a sultry piece of Balearic bluesy-softrock, with heavy drum breaks, lots of warm keys, an atmospheric guitar solo and moody vocals.
This beautiful love song was chopped and rearranged to great effect with a help of Space Echo. All four tracks are road-tested floor-fillers, aimed for different hours of the night.

On the flipside - Rune Lindbaek brings his magic touch and gives a subtle edit treatment to a wonderful weather-themed jazzfunk song by Nasza Basia Kochana. Rune's cut maintains the irresistible vibe of the original and beautiful vocal harmonies.
Next is the more edgy and raw offering by Sex Tags UFO's Telephones, who chops heavy synthesized Polish electro disco from the mid 80's and extends the original in an Italo Balearic style.

Various - Elaste Vol. 4 - Meta-disco & Proto-house

Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat wurde mein Keytrack für Elaste Vol. 4.

23.01.2014

We fell in love with Norwegian Atella after hearing just a few notes. With her enchanting voice, Kristiane lures you into a dreamlike state and lets you experience the seductive sound of Atella's electronic pop music. 'The Monster' is their impressive first output and leaves us hungry for more.

London based electronic soul music duo Stubborn Heart, signed to One Little Indian, seemed perfect to add breaks and bass to 'The Monster'. We are big fans of their debut album (which was crowned Album Of The Year at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards 2013), imagine how excited we were about their contribution.

Xinobi, who runs the Discotexas label with Moullinex, recently did remarkable remixes for Agnes Obel and John Grant. His taste in music is rather eclectic, as are his productions. He strips Atella's original to its core, leaving only the vocals behind. His rework is built around an uplifting piano lick and a ridiculously funky bassline. From Portugal with love.

Ben La Desh - Wondering What We Are

Ben La Desh may hover above radars despite his extensive back catalog for the likes of Sleazy Beats/Black Ops, Dirt Crew, Outernational and a recent contribution to the Young Adults House Slippers compilation.

One of the unsung modern forefathers of gradient chug, the Rotterdam native has carved out a niche for engulfing body movers that organically unfold like subtle origami.
Wondering What We Are explores the ever expanding spectrum of the Ben La Desh aesthetic in a compact 4-track capsule.

'Afrodesia' soundtracks a high speed chase through tropical back roads with swirling synths and pulsing drops.
'Your Love' has a slinky half-tempo bounce that skates along an infectious horn loop and vocal refrain.
'We Are' finds La Desh in his signature groove wheelhouse - buttery builds and smoothed-out repetition.
'Why Don't You' may very well be his deepest moment yet, a driving baseline is lathered with clattering percussion and sultry female croons to devilishly sinister effect.

Green Linez - Landscape / House Of 7 Joys Ep

We will keep limited stock only 1 month as usual....Please send your order as soon as possible!!!

Greeen Linez is a collaboration between Chris Greenberg (from the British electronic pop band Hong Kong In The 60s) and UK-born/Tokyo-based DJ/producer A Taut Line (aka Matt Lyne, co-founder of the Diskotopia label). The project combines the '90s dance music and R&B that soundtracked Chris and Matt's childhoods with the '70s/'80s jazz-funk and synthesizer soundtracks that they have obsessed over in the years since. All of this is filtered through the cocktail of retro pop, fusion and supermarket muzak that Matt has been exposed to during his time in Japan.

Their debut album Things That Fade was released in summer 2012 on Diskotopia, receiving positive reviews in The Wire, DJ Mag and FACT, as well as support from DJs and producers such as Julio Bashmore, Hyetal and Magic Touch - the last-named has also recently collaborated with the duo for his Nothing More EP, to be released in November on Tensnake's label True Romance. Besides their own music, Greeen Linez have also produced well-received remixes for artists including Seahawks, Maylee Todd, Sorcerer and the Japanese Idol group Especia.

The Landscape EP is the first appearance of Greeen Linez on the popular Japanese label Catune, run by 9dw's Kensuke Saito and home to Disco, Balearic and New Age-tinged releases from such artists as Windsurf, Sorcerer, The Beat Broker and Sauce 81. The title track features Ichirou Fujimoto (under his Awa moniker) on guitar, following on from his collaboration with Greeen Linez on their 2012 album track "Knowledge", as well as work on popular Japanese DJ duo Monkey Timers' debut single "Monk". A2 is Awa's own take on the title track, stripping away the kalimba, guitar and saxophone to create a deep, floaty synth bass-driven dancefloor hit that evokes the works of Larry Heard. On the flip side, the Electro-Funk number "House Of Seven Joys" recalls the pristine production sound of Trevor Horn, whilst the duo's own Dance Mix ups the track's pace to that of a house stormer, ploughing energetically through the accompanying birdsong and natural textures.

DJ Feedback
Great stuff. Really like A1 track and B2...sounds like Rheji Burrell producing Level 42.

12inchWIP003
WIP Music
09.01.2014

Fluen follows his contribution to WIP's full length, label-defining release 'Once Upon A Time In Barcelona' with 3 more neatly forged House grooves. 'I Do Want You' blends brooding vocals with lucid percussion and a stout set of kicks in exemplary fashion. 'I Do Want You' opens up with an emotive keys line that sits in amongst rueful strings and pitched-down vocal cuts. Additive snares and interchanging hats softly roll progress towards a hypnotic and irresistible drop. 'All I've Got' steadily grows with minor-key synth lines sitting above a delicately evolving bass-line. Carefully mapped percussion livens the mix as cleverly treated vocals ring out and tug on the heartstrings. 'Crescendo' immediately feels the more rugged of the bunch as an air of Detroit emerges through pulsing synth patterns and stiff, mechanical percussion. More deftly snipped vocals come into play and snatch the focus before a plunge into a capacious pulse certain to do the business on the floor.

'Translocomotion' was only issued on 7" as a promotional gift called Bon baisers d'Antibes and next to that, Favorite discovered the 'Discocorico' song: a crazy disco-baroque version of the French anthem, which perfectly demonstrates how eccentric and outrageous Mr Massiera could be.

27.08.2013

somewhere between New Order, Arthur Baker, and Giorgio Moroder with the benefit of modern ears, Argentine export and Berlin movershaker Nico Purman continues to shape his ever evolving vision of sound with his new label Art of Memory and its debut release AOM001. Carrying the momentum of his recent EP's such as Visions on Vakant (VA036) and Fade Away on Crosstown Rebels (CRM086), Nico drops perhaps his most expansive and melodic work yet drawing on influences from decades past to produce something both new and honest to former eras. With nods to New Wave, Techno, and a dusting of Space Odissey, AOM001's 3 tracks (+1 digital exclusive) bring both the lush musical synth textures of Purman's electronic forefathers with modern low end motivation of deep bass and tight rhythmic production. The resulting tracks that comprise AOM001 express pensive, moving, deep ideas of an electronic yesterday with an unrestricted vision of tomorrow written and shaped by the minds of talent like Nico Purman's.

Elkin & Nelson's scorching Latin disco classic hit big throughout Spain, South America and NYC's underground club scene in 1979 when this now rare and hard-to-find disco 12' version originally dropped, but it gained its real cult status after being picked up and championed up by the likes of Rampling, Oakenfold et al who who fell in love it after hearing it played by the legendary DJ Afredo at Ibiza's Amnesia club. Tempelhof - Frozen Dancers

Four years after their debut full length on Distraction records, close Hell Yeah family members Tempelhof are back on the label with a brand new album, Frozen Dancers. Italian's Luciano Ermondi and Paolo Mazzacani are known for their hugely musical
electronica; stuff that is rich with plenty of instruments and alive with shoe-gaze texture as evidence by previous EPs on this label like City Airport earlier in 2013 and You K back in 2012. The new nine-track album one again proves the duo to be in a league of
their own when it comes to crafting spacious and emotive sound spaces. Things start with the trilling synths and intricate electronics of Drake, which swells from golden ambiance into a bustling brew of organic and analogue texture. From there things get dark and sad, with the heavy minor chords of 'Monday is Black'. 'Change' then sees the duo play with broken beat patterns and urban moods of the sort you might find in a Burial of Four Tet set. Metal drums clatter a spare pattern as heavyweight bass props the whole thing up and its involving stuff from start to finish. From there the mood and rhythm of the album continuesto ebb and flow in a way that makes it essential to be listened to in one full sitting. There are anxious and fractious vocals on 'She Can't Forgive ' that get paired off with torturous synth lines and unsettled arpeggiated melodies. It's truly heart wrenching stuff but there is also more cluborientated fare like 'The Dusk', which sounds like deconstructed Chicago house rebuilt as ethereal, synth heavy electronica. You wont hear a familiar pattern of recognisable sample anywhere throughout this album, it is a truly unique and beguiling melange of many different sound sources, genre influences and human emotions and is one that confirms Tempelhof to be one of the finest duo's in their realm.

Rogue Cat Sounds are back in town with a real treat. Charm 'With You', a warm female soulful number, hits the spot in every way. The original has a nice proto- house production; think Paul Simpson Easy Street Records...dirty DMX drums , sassy slap bass, sharp synth stabs, delayed hand claps and rounding it off Charmaine's vocals melt you right into the groove. On the flip we have N.Y.C.'s Eric Duncan (Rub n tug/Still Going) on remix duties. He builds and builds his mix, slowly dubbing up the vocals, weaving through the jolting synth stabs and slap bass, keeping the drums tight, driving the track nicely until it creeps on up to reveal a super-heavy bassline to jaw dropping effect...tasty! Another classic piece from those cats.

'Bodyjack' - a rough-ass bassline track with classic Dance Mania & Relief style beats - it was originally passed onto five DJs only: Jackmaster, Paul Woolford, Dave Clarke, L-Vis1990 & Rolando all caned it; dancefloor reactions proving the track was a big underground joint.

Flip over for "I Wanna Be': a twisted garage carnival workout. Huxley dropped this immediately at We Love at Space in Ibiza and it took off from there, and both tracks have been going off even having repeated plays on Radio 1 and Rinse FM.

Hypercolour heard these and immediately signed Bodyjack to the label, releasing the big 'Feel Real Good EP' last month.

Now finally the first 2 raw Bodyjack cuts are unleashed on loud-pressed vinyl with 2 bonus locked grooves for the DJs. One press only so don't sleep.

Check The Guns - Tape Edit 006

The Guns boys have been firing gems at us recently but this release is possibly their strongest to date.

TapeEdit 006 is a 4 track 12' which is all killer no filler.

First up is David 'Fathead' Newman's 1978 Jazz-funk / Disco killer 'Keep the dream alive' which is a drum and flute driven funk monster, lovingly extended and amended - watch out for the midway drum break, you won't be disappointed. On the inside is the relentless bass twisting, rhythm guitar focused 'Ups and downs' with a vocal line and brass section that will leave you wanting more.

On the flip is the Brit funk inspired 'Pass the music on' which sees the smooth sax and bass of Morrissey Mullen given a massive guns workout.
Last but in no way least is Eastbound Expressways 'Never let go' rework with it's beefed up kick and envelope filtered guitar it will fit nicely into any dance floor set and brings this CTG release to a solid finish.

Lonely C & Baby Prince - Fraiche / Irene Is A Hoax

Block rocking, pop locking Lonely C and Baby Prince are at it again with their latest "Fraiche EP" on Soul Clap Records. The troublemaking two-some take us back to 2011. It was a weekend in late august and New York City was practically under martial law. News tickers warned frightened citizens that a hurricane called Irene would strike at any minute, flooding most of Manhattan and Williamsburg where the boys sat gleefully snacking and talking shit inside the world famous Marcy Hotel.
With all airplanes grounded and the trains halted it became clear that LC & BP were going nowhere. It began to rain, the wind picked up and as the skies darkened, NYC declared a state of emergency. Well...looks like it was time to hit the STUDIO!

What followed could be considered a weekend of non stop music and delinquent antics. These two masters of hang out managed not to leave the house as they pumped out track after track anticipating the end of days. Only disaster never struck, IRENE WAS A HOAX! Was it another conspiracy Who was pulling the strings Who was John Frum Is the earth hollow The mysteries remain... UNSOLVED

The anonymous bear and bunny from Norway is back with a super secretive 12' with two never heard before disco edit bangers. This isn't on soundcloud, there will be no digital release, and it will be a strictly limited edition 12' white label vinyl release.
Why all this secrecy and limitation, you may ask Well, the Q side contains an edit so powerful and contagious, that it is simply not for everyone to play. It is a weapon of dancefloor mass destruction that needs to be handled with the utmost care, and DJs must use it at their own risk, being careful not to devastate the dancefloors which are subjected to its massive power.

What is this powerful weapon, you may ask Well, let us just say that The Glue has done the daring deed of rearranging the track that won the 1982 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s), produced by a fellow who won another 26 Grammys during his career. They have taken the conga madness party vibes of the original to a slightly more DJ friendly peaktime bomb level. Drop it, but drop it with precaution.
And on the A-side, you will be delighted to find a more traditional, soft, yet dancefloor friendly The Glue track, tuned with warm late night feelings that will make you forget all about the rainy slushy winter that is going on outside.

Its glittering intro floats through the cosmos with a euphoric flavour and is brought back into a big bang bass line for a great Italo Disco dancing experience.

So soon after his Red Laser debut on EP4 LeonxLeon is back with a clickety clack. This train journey inspired Italo Disco sees the Parisian producer get even more progressive and sophisticated with his music ideas resulting in this amazing 6 minute disco epic. LeonxLeon is definitely one to watch for 2014

Label Head Il Bosco imagines the soundtrack to a world taken over by decaying zombies. They must kill humans so they can eat brains in an attempt to satisfy their never ending hunger and when they have finished eating they enjoy dancing to sounds played by their favourite local Italo Disco DJ. It's a moody electronic beat heavy horror jam that fills the room with creepy electronics and sweeping delays.
Do not miss!

Crazy P - Mts Vol 2

Long term Futureboogie affiliates Crazy P follow up various label appearances as individual artists (notably, Danielle Moore's collaborations with PBR Streetgang and Christophe, and Ron Basejam's eminent White Lamp remix) with 'MTS Vol.2'...
Due for release on 4th November (vinyl) these tracks have been road tested at Crazy P appearances all summer long - Glastonbury, Wilderness, Gottwood, Shambala, Festival No.6, Garden (Croatia) and DC10, to name just a few. The EP marks the collectives' first output since their last album 'When We On' (iTunes Dance LP of 2012), and paves the way nicely for a new album to come in 2014... 'Burning' kicks things off with a dense Disco pulse. A taught kick and layered claps pin down swung hats that flicker in the corners, making way for Danielle's vocals. A strong current grows as a sawtooth bass-line, developing vocals and flecks of additive percussion build towards a plunge into a steamy vocal line...'Clouds' presses a resistless piano motif under detuned synth stabs, evolving percussion and an arresting vocal line. Progress climbs towards a powerful peak as vocals ring out over a thickened mix in emphatic fashion...Twisted and warped, 'Virtuality' punches forwards with samples managed and mangled alongside sleazy vocals and a potent, funky bass-line. Reminiscent of a Motor City Drum Ensemble cut, progress builds with crowd noise and percussive flicks before things sink firmly into a dusty, funk-leant groove...

After a meeting of hearts and minds in Berlin & Croatia it was time that Outboxx and Crazy P cemented their mutual appreciation society with a remix. Outboxx's interpretation of 'Clouds' glows amber from the outset with a subtle Rhodes pattern sitting under stuttered vocals and a delayed clap. The breakdown opens out to a gamboling piano motif and a weighty bass line that sits it comfortably on the dance-floor...

Sfire is the name given to the music productions of Jeffrey Sfire and Samuel Long. Jeffrey Sfire is a dj originally from Detroit. Samuel Long is a musician from London. The two met in Berlin one summer and over their love of 80's dance and minimal wave music began working together in the studio using lots of vintage gear. The song Sfire3, included on John Roberts' Little White Earbuds podcast from 2010 and deeply loved by John Talabot, is finally ready to be released to a wider audience... along with Sfire2, a more upbeat new wavy number. OK so... Let the music do the talking. 250 copies, vinyl only, full color cover and inlay artwork

Soul Renegades - Now Your Gonna Save Me

Sometimes it's good to return to the source as this spirited production from Soul Renegades aka Craig Smith (6th Borough Project) & Ricky Reid (True Rebels) seamlessly testifies.

As the title implies this gospel referencing vocal sings passionately over infectious Jazz inflected piano along with a kicking rhythm track that is all about getting the message across.

It's the soulful energy of it all that carries the track over the course of some nine minutes while never pausing for breath.

The Instrumental version works equally well which I guess only goes to highlight the resilience of these classic influences from decades past.
