It's not often you come across an artist you can genuinely refer to as a 'cult legend', but Vashti Bunyan is truly that. A full 35 years on from her only previous album, the singer returns with her first new solo work, a breathtakingly beautiful album.

Far from being simply some kind of appendage tacked onto the end of an amazing story and a past classic, 'Lookaftering' is a fully beautiful album in its own right. Produced by fellow Edinburgh resident Max Richter (whose 'Blue notebooks' album was released on FatCat's 130701 imprint in 2004) - who also co-arranged with Vashti, it's a rich, beautifully arranged and stirring album. Developing gradually and organically - with work initially taking place between Max and Vashti's homes, and then at various studios in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow - 'Lookaftering' is anchored around Vashti's voice and picked acoustic guitar, and Max's piano playing and co-arranging. Its instrumentation includes a string quartet, oboe, harp, French horn, recorder, flute, hammer dulcimer, glasses, harmonium, and Rhodes piano, and it features contributions from Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Adem, Adam Pierce (Mice Parade), Robert Kirby (Nick Drake / etc.), Otto Hauser and Kevin Barker (Espers / Currituck County)

As well as a neat balance between gentle, sparse songs and heavier, more orchestrated numbers, there is a beautiful play between the lush instrumental arrangements and the incredibly intimate, in-your-ear presence of Vashti's voice. There's a real honesty to the album - from the fragile intimacy of the vocal itself to the stories it weaves. Just as 'Diamond Day' was a very pure document of a journey, 'Lookaftering' is similarly based on stories taken directly from lived experience (the death of a brother; the joys / fears of motherhood; the tension between freedom / commitment and travel / domesticity). There's also a great integrity forged from the cohesiveness between lyrical content and musical form (the gentle rolling and pitching of the melodies on 'Same But Different'; the vocal roundelay on 'Here Before'; the ice-shiver of dulcimer on 'Turning Backs'). The album title itself, a personalised word that describes the role of 'taking care of someone - human or animal - or even something that needs to be done, that needs lookaftering.'

"Her work is a testament to the power of even the quietest music to help us feel things deeply, an experience that lasts for a few minutes that we can return to for a lifetime." - Pitchfork

! Irreal, the fth long player from Chicago's Disappears, is another trip down the rabbit hole. The album plays out as a dream sequence - hazed dub landscapes give way to the group's most experimental and open music yet.

If their last album Era conrmed the fact that Disappears are on their own trip, then Irreal is where it kicks in. Eternalism, roboethics, identity - it's a Ballardian mix of imperfect melodies, half thoughts and good ol' dystopian modernity. It's a master class in texture, pace and control.

Produced by John Congleton at famed Chicago recording institution Electrical Audio, Irreal sits in the negative space where art rock and post punk collapse onto each other. It's the sound of Disappears reporting back from The Void.

track listing:

press quotes for Era:

'On Era, Disappears begin to pave a path to transcendence that's a little more varied, grabbing the more anemic sounds of Clinic and Liars, while keeping the forward momentum of their most obvious influences Spacemen 3 and rough-edged Velvet Underground. They know they trade in the business of the past and work within confined musical language, but they play on, middle fingers scratching their eyebrows.' 7.3 Pitchfork

'For Chicago based quartet Disappears, time seems to move at a different, altogether more indeterminate pace. Era is a work of magic; a record you could lose days or even weeks in, without noticing at all.' Drowned in Sound

'It's an incredible mix of legitimately haunting energy and maturity that is really, really hard to nd, and even harder to nd in an exciting form that doesn't come off cynical or jaded.' The Talkhouse

'Era is truly a landmark album for this formidable foursome' -Brainwashed

The full length debut from incendiary ensemble which took the band well beyond their astounding live dynamic of guitar theatrics and poly-rhythmic madness seamlessly blends non-traditional instrumentation and studio improvisation with a surging rock dynamic into an incredibly heavy debut.. 'A fine sound, a young sound, a sound you should get to know today.' The Wire // Din's is the first proper full length release from Psychic Ills, a band which took shape in NYC during the late days of 2003. Their first foray into the public ear came via a self released 7' bearing the title 'Mental Violence I'; two tracks of drum machines, vocals and guitars which pushed and tugged at the senses with an undeniable sense of urgency. They followed it with another limited edition vinyl only release; a Twelve Inch EP bearing the title 'Mental Violence II: Diamond City' which contained three more sonic explorations, a remix by Sonic Boom and served as the prerecorded debut of the four-piece incarnation. Dins plays like a revelation of sorts and was recorded by Charles Burst who has worked with bands such as Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance and The Double. With a long string of bombastic performances behind them Psychic Ills entered the studio ready to create a record out of the incendiary compositions they had been perfecting. Bay Area Retrograde (BART) Volume 2 is Dark Entries' second compilation of underground music from San Francisco (and the greater Bay Area) made between 1978-1983. Towards the end of the 70s, San Francisco's experimental music scene clashed with the aftermath of punk and gave birth to a vibrant underground. By the early to mid 80s the DIY music scene of the Bay Area was a hotbed for experimental and quirky new wave, post punk, and synthpop, quite similar to New York's No Wave scene and Berlin's Neue Deutsche Welle. This compilation connects the (transit) lines between these varied musical offerings and tells the secret story of eleven forgotten Bay Area bands. BART Volume 2 features slow, dystopian horror from pioneering industrial group Factrix; crushing, motorik noise from acid punks Chrome; amphetamine-driven synth punk from Red Asphalt; an early demo, never released on vinyl, from legendary post punk band Tuxedoomon; chilling atmospheric drone from Ki Di Me; leftfield new wave from Indoor Life featuring Patrick Cowley on synths; Los Microwaves more sinister side project Baby Buddha; gay drag icon Timmy Spence delivering an unknown camp classic, a pure instrumental electro-pop workout from Human Being Men; TR-808 fueled synth pop from Menlo Park duo Wonders of Science, and a poetic yet somber and haunting song from the mysterious Zru Vogue. All tracks have been carefully remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a large 6-panel, 2-sided fold out poster designed by Eloise Leigh, featuring original photos and fliers from each band's personal archive plus a 36"x24" print of a photograph by Ruby Ray from1978. BART is the acronym for Bay Area Rapid Transit, the main rail transportation system for the San Francisco Bay Area. This LP is by no means a definitive compilation but merely opens the tunnel to the underground of the Bay!

Mannequin is really proud to announce the reissue of one of the most important Dutch Wave bands THE ACTOR, with their seminal 1982 tape "EXPLODED VIEW". Limited cassette edition.
"In the beginning of the eighties, a new phenomenon emerged: home taping. This way of recording resulted in a lot of noise. But that was less important then getting one's music out to the public. A well known label for cassette bands in those days was the dutch Trumpett Tapes. They were the first to publish the music of The Actor, who became their top selling cassette band in 1982 and 1983. The Actor's first release was Exploded View in 1982. The songs - sung both in English and German - often related to fashion, modernism, dancing and appearence. This made The Actor 'quite fashionable."

Edition of 500 copies. Remastered from the original tapes by Rude 66, The Netherlands, 2014. This edition under exclusive license to Trumpett, 2014.

Der Film gewährt einen exklusiven und intimen Einblick in die Arbeit an Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds release two previously unavailable tracks: Give Us A Kiss
and Jubilee Street (live from The Sydney Opera House). The songs from the award-winning feature 20,000 Days On Earth will be available on a limited edition
vinyl 10' to be released on November 10th.

Mogwai release an EP containing new songs and remixes from the sessions of their most recent album, 'Rave Tapes'. It's called 'Music Industry 3. Fitness Industry 1', and it's a six-track set containing three new cuts, plus remixes of older songs by Blanck Mass, Pye Corner Audio and Nils Frahm.

On Silver, multi-instrumentalist Charles-Eric Charrier directs his collaborators Ronan Benoit and Cyril Secq through a lesson in tension and release. Dismissing genre boundariesSilver deftly plants its roots on a plateau in a strange land somewhere between the worlds of psychedelic post-rock, electronic, improv jazz and modern composition. Over the course of five movements, Charrier and company illustrate how to successfully kaleidoscope an eclectic range of influences into a cohesive and unique whole. From the smokey sludged psych rock blues jam of '21 Echoes,' the jazz lounge pitter-pat of brushed snares and tapped hats coalesced with analog synth and brass vibrations on '12 From,' to the plucked and bowed folk strings and hand drums of '9 Moving,' Silver draws a new musical blueprint for the post-everything generation.

Soiree are back with another slice synergy that only these devoted individuals could make. The Soiree sound is a gumbo of flavours bonded together with a "let's have fun" production ethos. Max Essa and Stevie Kotey created the Soiree project to write quirky yet funky songs which show their love of experimentation.

Debut album by Michal Ho and MC Signup's new combo 'None Of Them'! Making music for the twenty-second century, the duo is constantly deconstructing its stylistic boundaries and following traditions only to destroy them. On stage, Signup (Anymouse, Big Zis, Grenzgänger) is the master of ceremony, Michal Ho (Tuning Spork, Nice Try Records) is the selector. "Vocals glide over beatsgenerated in little boxes full of flashing lights, sometimes smooth, sometimes razor-sharp."While Signup is an amazing live performer at the front of the stage, it is approriate to also point out Michal Ho's achievements as an excellent producer for the past twenty years. His first steps led him into jungle music in the mid nineties and evolved into a first release as 'Mijatoho' on Straight Ahead Recordings. From then on, Michal Ho slowly got seduced by four to the floor music and turned into bass loving electronica and techno producer that he is now. Collaborations with Samim and Jay Haze on Labels such as Get Physical and Tuning Spork got him a big boost and took him to play gigs all around the world. Check out the interview on Resident Advisor where Michal talks about his approach and his experiences back in

To understand the Psychedelic Shafferson Jetplane we have to take a trip to the late 60s and early 70s in the bands home country - Chile. There and then the growing youth culture expands their minds and their ideals of equality in rhythm with the chaotic cosmic sounds from the, then and now, acclaimed psychrockscene. In october 1970 the festival Piedra Roja, wich has been called Chiles equivalent to Woodstock, takes place. The counterculture and belief in the future are strong. But the end of an era is just around the corner. Three years later Augustus Pinochets fascist regime, with support from CIA, takes control of the country. September 1973 are known as the beginning of the time of silence. Thousands of people were murdered and tortured - among them many artists - during Pinochets 17 years in power. But during the recent years the experimental psychrockscene has begun to roar from the underground it was buried alive in.

When the Psychedelic Shafferson Jetplane released their self titled, analogue recorded, debut 2010 it became painfully obvious that the band are among the key-players on that scene. The record sold out faster then Pinochets fascist heart stopped beating after his attack 2006. And that's just one, among many, reasons to why we at Hoga Nord Rekords feel extraordinary proud to release two new psychtunes from TPSJ!

A-side takes off with a linear psych-blues vibe until the riffs pleasantly starts to cut and stimulate our eardrums frantically: Membrillo's ride is the sound of ZZ Top on the run on choppers after a drunken shopliftningbender on the wrong side of town. If you study TPSJ:s debut-cover you can't miss that the band not only loves Hugo Chavez but also Spacemen 3. Suitably the B-side share names with the three british space rockers hometown - Rugby. It's time for a revolution boys and girls. And all it takes is five seconds. And, uh, yeah.. we smell burning!

Third album for the band orobico -partenopea with a renewed line-up, as is the tradition of the group. An album that returns to the first Malaavia where the symphonic prog joins the sound more typical of the Mediterranean and Arabian. The warm sound of the keyboards of Michael Carobbio are consistent with a very varied album but that will complement the most ardent fans of this genre of music with the fans of the typical 70's sound more than the Neapolitan tradition than late a trademark ever since. The existential and philosophical themes developed in music and lyrics have always been the trademark of this training that has invented the genre of new-prog esoteric and reinvent themselves at each exit. The fragment as part of the "whole" and as a body that achieves an independent existence, this is the leitmotif of the songs on the album that are followed without interruption for a development concept that everyone can invent imaginatively varying the sequence.

In his historical experience, the progressive has experienced some codes that, more than others, have contributed to its success and to its durability. One of these is the suite concept, the composition of long-term extended to an entire disk is characterized by a consistent narrative typical of the rock art of the '60s /' 70s. The appeal of this form of composition is strong enough to magnetize still young formations, as happened to Zion. The band Neapolitan - active since 2000, a debut assets published in 2006 - in addition to this form as a content family prog aesthetics: the planetary dear to those early King Crimson so influenced by the thought and work of a composer caught and started like Gustav Holst. The reference to the famous "The Planets" (1916) is obvious and immediate, but probably in the making of the Zion counted little, if anything (because the suite holstiana planets are seven and nine): In "9P - Nine planets "showed greater the need to say everything at once, the expressive urgency that characterizes many works, becoming a mixed blessing. It is no coincidence that the disc is born of a two-day live sessions in the studio, a speed that has helped in the creation of the band, as befits a passionate group really "independent", but rather the stylistic determined to pursue. Net of predictable narrative and musical considerations scan (nine planets for nine different pieces, then nine atmospheres and different climates), the Zion realize a disc that plays the gritty tradition with an eye to heavy prog rock and another to the typical vein melodic masters Orme, Banco and PFM, alternating passages full of groove suspension "space" to care Footprints "Felona e Sorona".
