Son d’Étroit boss Boran Ece reveals label’s second release ‘Reprise’, backed by a remix from Mihai Popoviciu.
Following the label’s first release, founder Boran Ece returns to Son d’Étroit with the imprint’s second offering this December. First drop ‘Relance’ set the tone for the label, featuring in Spotify’s Lo-Fi House playlist, picking up support from John Digweed, Alexi Delano and Guy J, and selling out on vinyl within a few weeks.
Hot on its heels, the Basel-based DJ and producer now steps up to deliver his latest single, ‘Reprise’ - accompanied by a remix from Romanian favourite, Mihai Popoviciu.
Ece’s original showcases a vibrant medley of dynamic vocals amongst refined melodies, punchy kicks and subtle dubby chords throughout to offer a hypnotic and heady house cut. Next, Mihai Popoviciu’s slick take on the track introduces a skipping, snaking groove guided by swinging percussion, resonant stabs and tripped out vocal snippets.

The one and only MdCL - Mark de Clive-Lowe - is back with a batch of Midnight Snacks fresh out the oven. The third installment in his series of instrumental broken beat, jazz-fused tastiness features four new tracks of Mashibeats dancefloor goodness.

"Musashi 2474” kicks us off with the bruk grooves, imagining a sci-fi future where the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi travels the spaceways. “Journeyman” follows, taking us into downtempo, head-nod, boom bap territory built around an MdCL piano sample. The EP’s flipside starts with “Third Plane” - a soulful broken beat jam, twisting and turning through a synth and keys drenched soundscape. We close out this snacks session with “Orbits” - a jazzy house inspired roller to take us home...

Edited by Micky More & Andy Tee, this version is exclusively available on vinyl.

Stephane Attias is back with a new 12” and this one is special, it s a tribute to Phil Asher .

At the beginning of 2021, DJ, producer, mentor, and friend Phil Asher passed away suddenly and Stephane naturally wanted to pay tribute to his memory like many people . Exchanging ideas and memories with some of his friends, Stephane proposed Trinidadian Deep as well as Mark de Clive-Lowe to collaborate on two tracks in Phil’s memory and the result is here now. With live percussion, organic keyboards, house beats, and broken grooves, Journey to the light and Illusion will hopefully participate to keep Phil ‘s memory alive on the dancefloor or on your sound system

DeepArtsound, Perpetual Rhythms, Osunlade's 'Yoruba', and many others - 'About U' is Trinidadian Deep's first release for Croatian label Burek.Born and raised on the island of Trinidad and Tobago, today a place this producer calls 'home' is found on various locations scattered all over the globe and a variety of influences is what is immediately evident by rich sounds and textures engraved onto this piece of vinyl.A side, 'I Want' is the most laid-back moment, in lack of a better term. Warm-sounding tribal percussions supporting the interaction of deep chords and wonderfully lush synths running thought the whole track only to get enriched with a beautiful piano line in the 2nd half. If there is track fitting to represent the sunset, that transition from day to night moment - 'I Would' is the one.B1 'Ghost' is the track on the record with the most forward-momentum. Deep tribal rhythms and lush synth lines are a sort-of a leitmotif on this record and are present here as well, with an occasional vocal snippet that only deepens the magic.B2 'Abourisha' makes good use of those leitmotifs in a similarly effective but overall quite different manner. Broken rhythm gives it a slightly different energy, making it an ideal track for those 5 am moments when a track like this marks the night.

FOR04 kicks off with a contribution from the London based duo, Kassian. Joe & Warren's partnership is both prolific and diverse. Over a short period of time, they've amassed an impressive back catalogue with in-demand releases on labels such as Phonica White, Heist and their own imprint Faux Poly. Never the ones to rest on their laurels, they continue to quest for the new cutting-edge sound and deliver it here with a track titled 'Parallel'. It is an elastic minimalist driven groover, that mergers a perfect proportion of acid synth lines with taut drum workout. The end result is sure to keep your locked in on that dance floor.A

Next up we have Casey Spillman with aptly titled 'Full Circle'. In a short period of time Casey's distinct groove laden output has landed him with releases on Fuse, Constant Sound and Locus to name but a few. For some who know their labels that list alone is enough to provoke an involuntary movement in the extremities. Wait till you make the 'Full Circle'! The groove here is locked in the well pronounced ringing drum shuffle and is accentuated by the opaque yet dreamy dubbed out chords and scattered vocal chops. Add a freight train of a baseline provided in the mix and you can guaranty a healthy rumble on the dance floor.A

Flip and awe! 'Hour Glass' is a bomb of rare dance floor destructive power. London's Chocky joins the Dessous Recordings label and shares four tracks of sublime house music on Steve Bug's imprint. 'Self Knowledge' is a deep, techy roller clocking it at nearly 10 mins - plenty of space to expand into its full potential - the groove grows ever more hypnotic and engaging as the track unfolds. Next up is 'A Reefa' - a non too subtle reference to a certain herb that might have inspired this loose yet highly funky deep house jam. 'Casa De Estrela' changes the vibe up with a more direct and jacking track - even though it would work at prime time, Chocky's feel for space and drama make sure the track will be heard in many diverse surrounding and sets this year.

Time to Play Records is back on track with a new ep destined to warm the hearts of house lovers. Filippo Tazzer, label manager and executive producer, continues in his spasmodic search for underrated talents, enhancing his talent, musical sensitivity and evident production skills. After having entrusted the baptism of the label to Reekee, the moment is propitious to introduce another Italian, Colosimo, to the scene with quality work that embraces different spheres of contemporary electronics.

Shosin, the track that gives the ep its title, is a low-speed train that contaminates electro and deep and develops, between breathtaking pauses and thunderous returns, through new wave rhythms.

Formalaita, then, brings out the most introspective part of Colosimo: slow pace, very full-bodied basses, hypnotic arpeggios, melancholic strings. A sort of genuine and not haughty reference to Larry Heard’s Alien masterpiece.

Cratera closes Colosimo’s work by releasing a contagious energy made of dreamy house, Latin references and harmonies that refer to Caribbean atmospheres.

Ouïe is the label of Acid Pauli and Nico Stojan, two cosmic travellers who started the imprint to curate diverse music that somehow all fits within their musical world. With their 14th release, the reigns are handed over to Disarmed, a new project by two veterans of the electronic music scene, for their 3 tracker 'Slow Down EP'.
The vibe fits perfectly with the label - first track 'Disarmed' is a deep chugging, melodic cut - dreamy vocals underpinned by a thick, grooving beat - one for the festival crews.
The 'Lovestruckk Remix' of the same track dives headlong into the trippy, euphoric nature of the track, stretching out the feeling over 8 and a half minutes. Lovestruckk are Nico Stojan and Holmar Filipsson (aka Thugfucker) and the two met in a cave of sorts on the dancefloor of Kater-Holzig in Berlin. An instant friendship formed and shortly after they began working on music together. A few years later, on a beautiful Tuesday morning at the 2016 Burning Man, they played the closing set of that year atop the Robot Heart bus. This set has since become the stuff of legend and where their collaboration received the name "Lovestruckk".
Finally the title track, 'Slow Down' is a chugging house groover, with rising, trippy synths - at once immediately danceable and yet perfectly suited to chilling.

Black Key return from a four year hiatus in style - with 4 sublime tracks from Australian ultra deep house don Planisphere - aka David Swatten. Following an incredibly well received LP on reissue label For Those That Knoe, Swatten returns with more expansive, smokey and utterly consuming deep house cuts, stamped with his unique sound but offering a different flavour from his Definitive Transmission LP. One which immediately stands out from the crowd. Being only his third release in 20 years, there's an understandable sense of anticipation around Swatten's output. This release undoubtedly puts Black Key firmly back on the map, picking up their deserved reputation for releasing only the very best deep house, aimed well and truly at the heads.

LA born, Berlin based Huerta drops a real gem of an e.p. here in the form of 'Amaso', showing just how polished a producer he has become. The title track gives off an air of Italian dream house coupling an immersive rhythm with sweeping chord progressions and luscious keys. 'Fake Leather Whatever' builds on that nostalgic feeling, marrying a timeless breakbeat with cosmic pads and blissful piano melodies. On the B side, 'Don't Be Gentle, It's A Rental' ventures down a more hard hitting path with the dancefloor definitely at the front of Huerta's mind, whilst still maintaining that atmospheric feel. Finally, bringing it back full circle, 'Reverse Thread' layers those emotive elements with an otherworldly synth line which draws you deep into an irresistible melting pot of grooves.

Hunt & Gather’s debut vinyl release comes by way of Pezzner’s cryptic moniker “The Native Language”. Written as a quasi-homeless man living off the rich in the San Juan Islands who writes music once per year to suffice his own delusions.

Walking the streets in these damp, anxious days that all run together lately, I was approached by a man who would blend right into the neighborhood, layered in flannel and sweatshirts for sleeping.

Rough, but for his shoes. (Never cheap out on anything that separates you from the ground.) “Pezzner,” he called out, from a safe distance. “What did the mangrove say to the marauding hordes.” My soul left my body for a moment and my voice responded on its own. “Petrichor.”

He caught my eye, nodded, left a padded envelope on the ground and vanished. The envelope had passed through many hands, slipped into the bed of a ferry-bound truck, passed from one fellow traveler to another, stashed under the counters of anarchist bookstores, left tucked between books at Little Free Libraries. The greenish stains suggested that at one point it had been swum across a lake. Another DAT, contents encoded here unabridged, and a letter from someone who called himself The Sentinel.

The Vessel lived out his days on Shaw Island, under a canopy of trees that gets smaller and smaller every season. His condition the same, any electricity lit his brain on fire, could only bring himself to compose one day a year, only at night, out of sight. Until he met The Angel, an eccentric with means, who built for him a device.

A Faraday Cage to block all electromagnetic emissions. Burlap walls, for atmosphere. A system of pulleys and levers, wood and rope, all running into a box that sat outside. An entirely mechanical control surface. No electrons in here. The Vessel lit fires, watched the shadows dance, closed his eyes and disappeared into the motion for hours at a time. The Sentinel came every morning to change the tapes. The Angel watched and pondered, his plans unknown.

The box sat sealed, bare except for another set of ideograms, scratched in day by day over time. Inside, the usual bedroom-producer shit. Outside, the ideograms told a story, passed from the Vessel to the Sentinel and drawn by the Angel, of a man who became another creature. Alert to the lowest frequencies, feeling music deep in the soil below their feet. Music that brings messages, from distant friends, warning of new creatures and the danger they brought. Skin alive to the world, so sensitive it can detect the landing of a single fly. A mind capable of keeping a map of the world inside. A mind that can look in a mirror and see a soul it knows well. A mind that can grieve.

After processing its contents, I filled the envelope with granola bars and walked it down to the market. The clerk gave me a knowing look as I placed it on the counter behind a stack of pork rinds from the previous century. As I walked out, a young man carrying a plastic bag and wearing impeccable shoes walked in.

Decay lead from the front once more with Decade Made 7, another vital various artists EP which marks the label’s 7 year anniversary and features red hot underground talents Mihai Popoviciu, James Dexter, Christian Burkhardt and Ray Mono.

The goal of Decay Records has always been to push quality, hypnotic, dubby grooves withoutfocusing on trends or hype, something they have done consistently since their launch in 2013 and continue to do here with their 7th birthday release, Decay Made 7.

Kicking off this latest VA from the label is Romanian Mihai Popoviciu, considered one of the most innovative eastern European producers of electronic music today. He opens with ‘Biology’, a bubbly, deep cut groove with slick hits gliding up top. It’s a track full of warmth that sinks you into a glazed-eye reverie. Dessous, Lefroom and Inermu associate James Dexter is a young but vital talent who represents the new wave of artists that are simmering in the London deep house underground. His ‘And Then’ has long legged, dubbed out kick drums that make for a cavernous groove, whilst smeared, warped chords fill in the spaces and ensure an ever-headier atmosphere as things roll on.

Christian Burkhardt has long been at the heart of the freshest tech house, putting out his well-designed loops on mainstay labels. Here he serves up ‘Quanta’, an icy-cool track with tripped out sonic details and sci-fi effects that make for real mind music. Last of all, former Mono_Cult resident and now Fuse and Moxy Music associate Ray Mono brings his expert minimal to the EP with ‘Uncut.’ It is a tough, bumping cut with razor sharp design and a pristine sense of late night funk finished with neon synth colours.

These are four perfectly designed and infectious tracks that are both slick and compelling.

Magnonic Signals welcome back the extraordinary talents of Darren Nye following his label debut on Neuromorphic Engineering Vol.1.

Well known for his beautiful techno, electro and electronica and featuring on top labels including FireScope, Nebulae, Revoke and Childhood Intelligence, Darren brings ‘Forgotten Technology’ which is some of his best work to date.

'Hidden In Plain Sight' (+) a dystopian electro track weaving lush warm pads and glassy eyed melodies over bubbling 808 beats with added 303 grittiness resulting in a wonderful timeless Detroit inspired gem.

‘Behind The Smile' (++) Imagine if B12 and Larry Heard met up for a late night jam in the mid 90's! A chi-town bassline combined with icy atmospherics and exquisite drum programming all make for a great track for both club and home-listening alike.

On the flip Dream Sequencer (-) takes us into pure space territory. A Nu Electronica style techno monster with driving drums and immersive emotional content throughout.
This track is sure to make any discerning dance floor go into overdrive!

To close we have the amazing electronica of 'Great Tartaria' (- -) Mr. Nye pulls out all the stops to deliver a sumptuous story-telling track. A pounding 808 kick and then soul soothing melodies and strings take you to a higher plane.

Opening up proceedings, Soft House Company "What You Need" (MM & AT Remix). Simply an iconic track from master Claudio Rispoli aka Moz- Art ,"What You Need" is probably the most perfect Italian piano House track ever made. Micky More & Andy Tee version is very respectful to the original, they added a bit of groove to make it more danceable and more tasty. “What You Need” was one of the top five house tracks in the sound of 1990 UK across fields and clubs. A sublime piece of House Music.

"Moody" by Micky More & Andy Tee on B SIDE is also a little classic on its own right, magic piano vibes with beautiful vocals and Rhodes chords. A must have record!

Denmark's WhoMadeWho have always been hard to pin down. Their music sounding as effortless as it is stylistically and sonically adventurous. Fusing pop and disco memes with punk paraphernalia, the genre-bending trio made up of Jeppe Kjellberg, Tomas Høffding and Tomas Barford honed their skills on stage and in the studio, releasing a series of bestselling records topped off by their 2011 mini album "Knee Deep" on Kompakt.

Athlete Whippet return to Toy Tonics with an EP showcasing emotionally layered dance tracks and their refusal to stick to genre conventions. The duo are synonymous with sublime cuts that are just as suited to late nights and early mornings on the dancefloor, as they are to home-listening, this perfectly exhibited on the "Noguiera" EP.

The four-tracker is named after a remote place in the mountains around Rio de Janeiro where it was made on a creatively fruitful getaway in 2021. It's sentimental, joyful, bouncy, and futuristic, and showcases the duo’s musicality combining bass guitar and piano, with hardware synths, loops and fragmented vocal samples.

Robin explains - "Spending time in Brazil in recent years was a blessing. The nature, culture and musical heritage over there is beautiful. Mostly in solitude, as I ended up spending most of my time in a remote place in the mountains around Rio, music became the only real emotional outlet for a while. So in a way this is a record of dance music created as far away as we’ve ever been from the dance floor!"

Both from a live performance background, Robin and Avi met studying at Goldsmiths London and found their way to the dance floor via playing in bands, Robin a guitarist, Avi classically trained in trumpet and later on picking up the keys. Absorbing the community of South London, they eventually set up artist collective and record label Squareglass - a proudly established home for new artists coming out of the area. They’ve remixed for the likes of Rhythm Section, collaborated with Olugbenga, and their releases have come with reworks from Ross from Friends, Cameo Blush, Baltra and Seb Wildblood. In 2021, their hybrid sound found a new home with tastemaker German label Toy Tonics who released their "Vesta" EP in May, followed by a run of European tour dates including Funkhaus Berlin, Phonox London and Amsterdam Dance Event.

House music, nightlife entertainment and DJ/Producer virtuoso Louie Vega has proven over and over again that he's a master chemist in the studio. The original version is nothing short of a classic, but it's as if the song had never been invited to a Louie Vega post-midnight global extravaganza. Was the song not aware that spellbound dancing and high BPMs were the standard for House Music Normally, such a blaring disregard for nightlife decorum would relegate a song to the pits of sonic hell, but we're talking about George Clinton here!The original opens up with a G-funk groove that screams Westside and lowriders. The listener is then blessed with Clinton as he adds his sage, soulful and pimpadelic vocals, complemented by Funkadelic singers asking him about the pains of the funk. The semblance of a beat that could drive the dancefloor into the morning hours is there, but in no way has it blossomed into its full glory. Enter Louie Vega.
His remix immediately greets listeners with a decadent spread of instrumentation and chutzpah. The original song's DNA populates the first thirty seconds of the remix but then an explosion takes place and the song assumes a new identity. The transcendent experience is akin to taking the elevator to a rooftop party and once the doors open- boom! The remix begs you to dance, the G-funk groove is now in your face instead of being laidback and percussion takes a front seat to take you away. The song is alive, there's no other way to describe it.

Being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. If you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. Now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outs...) and press it up. This is one of these occasions. When Kalk (the collaborative project of Philippe Heinen and Joffrey Becker) was released on Julien Briffaz' label Brif in 1999, I just had started to DJ out at a Club in Darmstadt (the late Café Kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what I liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the BPM hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. It seemed that there weren't too many around with the same desire. Otherwise 'Akasha' wouldn't have remained a diamond in disguise and not what Morgan Geist so aptly named an 'unclassic". By his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. If you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. Here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of Kalk. Mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. Mind you, it's old house music from days of Yore.
