“A house mix?” Not a chance. To take a tune as big as Back To Life and a genre as broad as house, one mix by itself was never going to cut it.

Once we started exploring the possibilities of Soul II Soul inna house music style, it took four unique approaches to properly capture the essence of house music on the sound systems as they moved their crowds through different moods. First up, Zepherin Saint’s Thunder, eases into its take on the classic as the layers build up underneath a blissful floating trumpet. Booker T Kings of Soul Satta mix steps up the intensity with each crescendo of that famous chorus, Then the first of two DJ Fen mixes is a cheerfully skittery garage dub, celebrating the dance as it hits a peak. After that Back To Life hits the chillout space, as Fen’s second mix is so laid back it’s almost horizontal, giving pause to contemplate what just happened.

Four mixes, four vibes, one Funki Dred landmark.

Taken from The Self-titled LP “CONCLAVE” due May 2021
“Perdón” is the second single from Conclave’s debut album, following October 2020’s “There’s Enough,” and it reinforces the original version with three explosive mixes conducted by house music legend Louie Vega. At the heart of “Perdón” is an intriguing lyrical refrain (“Que no me pides perdón,” or “Don’t ask me for forgiveness”) that evolves from an almost melancholy, wistful mood into a joyous affirmation, adding a second half to complete the phrase (“...porque no hay razón para pedir perdón”) that cleverly flips the meaning around to one of reconciliation and hope: “Don’t ask for forgiveness – because there is no need to ask for it anymore.” As the refrain, voiced by Conclave’s Cesar Toribio and his sister Sharin, expands in meaning and depth, it is matched by the music, that swells with interlocking guitar lines from Scott Scribner, and layers of Afro-Caribbean percussion courtesy Gabo Lugo. Toribio continues widening the sonic palette with layers of synth harmonies, taking the song out on a high with the trumpet of Aquiles Navarro joining the whole group in sending a message of forgiveness and hope radiating out like a prayer.

When Louie Vega first heard “Perdón,” he was struck by the vocal hook. “The lyrical content has meaning so I had to come with music (along with my crew) that had emotion.” That crew just happens to include Josh Milan, keyboard wizard and house veteran whose immortal productions as part of Blaze, Black Rascals and Phase II (not to mention other collabs with Louie’s Elements Of Life project) have made his name a guarantee of deep, quality grooves. Milan’s keys plus Louie and Nico Vega’s buttressing of the rhythm section with added drum elements make for a powerful new version of Conclave’s original. True to form, Louie also includes a thunderous Dub with a new bassline and a winding journey via keyboard courtesy of Milan. “It's all when you have a good song and catchy hook which makes it that much easier,” says Louie, “Big props to Conclave and Love Injection Records!

New record label set up by Lord Of The Isles. Inspired by the long summer nights of the northern hemisphere. Known as the ‘Gloamin’ in old Scots language. When the edges blur and colours become a white pink haze, the possibilities can seem endless. Melancholic thoughts of the past inspire unbridled optimism for the future. The unexpected is expected between sunset and the fall of night.

The first expansive motif laid down for the new Dusk Delay imprint is the Geoglyph EP by Lord Of The Isles himself. Clocking in at 39 mins across 5 tracks; It expertly fuses rare vintage instruments and effects with ultra-modern production techniques. Side A sees state of the art sequencers lead the antique machines on a merry dance through dub techno excursions and ambient jungle soundscapes. Side B utilises a more traditional approach, however, the results are no less beautiful or otherworldly. The creative inspiration here is the same - vintage meets modern - but this time it’s created using live improvisations woven into coherent arrangements to terraform a similar fictional landscape of sound that belongs to the same galaxy as side A.

Available in all formats 26 April 2021 – includes a limited-edition marble vinyl release with postcard.

As life and the world as we once knew it enters a new wave, Phuture Shock Musik continues apace with their first solo release of the year entitled ‘Dub Rockas’ EP, by none other than deep house maestro, Trinidadian Deep.

Cologne’s Feines Tier is delivering the second label compilation Zoo Vol.2. Providing the finest vibes from slow chuggers, Disco and Indie Dance to house and techno on one black and one white vinyl. Only 300 limited pieces available with silk printed and numbered vinyl covers. Don’t miss the quadrophant prints. Plus: Sticker inside!

Gruuv-founders Audiojack will be releasing the latest single from their forthcoming album this April. Feels Good, produced in collaboration with esteemed singer-songwriter Jem Cooke, will land on Crosstown Rebels and includes a remix from melodic techno talent Patrice Bäumel. This is the second single to be released ahead of the album with Under Your Skin, made with Kevin Knapp, being the first.

Feels Good sets off swiftly, merging prominent kick-clap combos with shimmering pulses throughout. It’s a real peak-time number, enhanced by Jem’s touching vocal offering, that showcases the stripped-back and ethereal theme of the single. Patrice Bäumel’s remix soon arrives and brings with it a poignant combination of celestial pads and rolling synth tones, as Jem’s stunning lyrical contributions magnify the track’s moving nature once more.

Leeds-born and now based in Ibiza, Audiojack have been at the forefront of electronic music for over a decade. In recent times the Gruuv-label founders have released their Isolation Tapes series to widespread industry acclaim, using music to provide a way out from the feelings of anxiety caused by lockdown and separation. UK singer-songwriter Jem Cooke is no stranger to Crosstown Rebels. First debuting on the label in 2018 alongside Made By Pete on So Long, it was later that year that Audiojack went on to remix the single. More recently, Jem collaborated with Damian on Into The Sun from his 2020 Flourish LP. A well-established member of the Crosstown Rebels family, Patrice Bäumel is one of Germany’s greatest exponents. Recent productions on Watergate Records and Systematic Recordings continue to showcase the emotive sound with which he’s become best known, whilst his performance at DGTL’s virtual festival last year marked another step in his ever-flourishing career.

Hot Creations continues its 2021 release schedule this February with a four-track EP from Josh Hvaal. Getting Better sees the UK talent return to the label, fresh from releasing his maiden EP, The Sound, on the imprint in March last year.

Basic leads the charge and takes no prisoners as it goes, pairing rapid kick-hat combos against layered vocal tones to create Josh’s signature late-night sound. Getting Better comes next, blending a retro acid vibe with an up-tempo lead bassline before the near six-
minute Oi takes the form of a heavyweight techno number. Tiptoe brings things to an emotive close, showcasing Josh’s eclectic style with drawn-out chords and percussion- laden breaks.

Josh Hvaal has become a household name in the contemporary house sphere in recent times. It was in March that the young UK-native achieved a remarkable feat: releasing his debut EP on Hot Creations. Such an achievement didn’t go unnoticed, with industry heavyweights soon playing his music in the form of Joseph Capriati, Andrea Oliva and many more. Releases have since followed on Yousef’s Circus Recordings, Malgado’s Distortion and Hot Creations’ offshoot Hottrax, standing him in good stead for another successful year in 2021.

With a string of chart hits and countless underground favourites to his name, Vito Lucente is one of Europe’s essential house names. From the international cross-over hit ‘Make Luv’ produced under his Room 5 moniker, his Junior Jack alias allowed him to explore a much clubbier sound. Releasing a number of Defected catalogue essentials including ‘Thrill Me’ and ‘E Samba’ as Junior Jack, his joyous vocal cut ‘Hold Me Up’ has been the only time Vito has used the aptly named Glory project, featuring the unmistakable vocals of Jocelyn Brown. Released originally in 2003, this hugely popular track now appears on a special 12” package from Defected with remixes from some of the label’s nearest and dearest. Opening with Riva Starr’s fiercely funky Tangerine Funk Vocal Mix, Full Intention’s Michael Gray follows up with his own joyous, piano-laden remix. On the flip, Vito’s JJ Vocal Mix places Jocelyn’s flawless, uplifting top-line centre stage, before Defected’s favourite Dutchman Ferreck Dawn closes out the package with his club-ready version.

Anonymous producer Alphonse returns to Klasse Wrecks for his third release on the label and brings with him a concoction of familiar sounds and flavours. If anything is certain about Alphonse by now it is that nothing is certain and everything is to be expected. The 'Beechwood DNA' EP sounds like a grip of the producer's influences and inspirations funneled through his sample heavy approach to production, taking wild turns unannounced. Acid licks and unruly breakbeats are definitely nothing new but the producers considered summation of each track is truly original and surprising. The EP rounds off with the title track 'Beechwood', a painfully beautiful ode that captures a nostalgic mood and shows off the producers well-informed ear for a catchy sample.

MAW RECORDS BACK CAT FIND... ALL MINT STOCK

HDSN has a style all his own, but his disco tingled, futuristic, groovy sound evolved from the likes of Paul Johnson or Armand Van Helden who played around with old records using samplers and drum machines in the 90s, when House Music was mostly an underground phenomenon that could only be heard at nightclubs or through homemade DJ mixes. So it´s hardly surprising that his latest EP sounds like it was straight out of this golden era - with “Whiplash" he delivers one of the best records to hit the market yet, pure vibes and so ecstatic through out the course of all four tracks that are outstanding. HDSN is the best at holding you in a groove, keeping you there using chopped samples, and forward moving drum patterns like sweeping sensations. NBASTWAX009 hits all the right buttons, taking you on a journey and we promise it works every time, anywhere to anyone like pure magic! Tracks like these are the reason we are so excited about this era - they have the quality to tell a story but are far from boring - music that feels natural & alive. Records like this don’t grow old like us … rather, every time you hear them they take you back their time. Grab ya copy

What happens when a house-music icon takes a talented group of musicians and mixes it with a savory blend of jazz, funk, dance, and soul music? You get a hearty serving of Elements Of Life. Elements Of Life Aka E.O.L., led by musical director and conductor Louie Vega, is a live-band project, which over its tenure has released three albums, won a Grammy award in 2006 for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical (Curtis Mayfield, “Superfly Louie Vega EOL Mix”), composed & performed the song “One Dream” for a globally-televised audience of 145 million viewers during the 2007 Superbowl pre-game show.

"I formed the band Elements Of Life to bring together a special group of musicians to create musical journeys in the studio and perform them live. The music inspired by groups and artists like War, Cymande, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Hammond, and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, but with the Vega Family E.O.L. twist and unique style. I want to take this band and perform in festivals and venues worldwide and bring you future grooves on recorded albums with a tinge of the musical landscape from our rich past, and yes there will be experimentation—get ready for it. You never know just who will show up to play in the finale!”

Following his ‘Classy Talk’ release on Nervous Records in 2020, German artist Bomat returns to the NYC imprint with a soulful cut entitled ‘Doing All Right’. It's an irresistible deep house cut that smoothly blends alluring keys and shuffling drums with
luscious leads and stirring vocals. ‘Doing All Right’ drops via Nervous Records on 19th March 2021.

Deep88 is back!

Here is a 7 track LP, music without any pretence, no silly fx or crazy compression/production tricks to take away from the music.. Just that 1988/1993 vibe with a slight Balearic twist but some how avoiding to sound like a poor copy or dated.

This last statement couldn't be any truer on this release.

The vibe is carried through the whole EP with each consequent track then offering something a little bit different, some showing his balearic side and other tracks having a more house feel.

With an almost lightning-fast Kickstarter campaign* in its tail-lights, Edinburgh’s Hobbes Music label follows up the success of Jacksonville’s ace FON EP and Gaming’s quirky (and no less ace) debut album, Scenes From A Deserted City with a new release from Leonidas & Hobbes, the label’s 15th release.

Leonidas & Hobbes make a timely return with Aranath EP, 3 years after Web Of Intrigue (from 3rd EP The Rags Of Time) was voted No. 1 in Bill Brewster's 2017 DJ History poll. Delivering a follow-up to many people’s 2017 summer anthem has been something of a protracted process, not least due to Covid and the 400 miles between them.

Aranath features the hugely talented multi-instrumentalist Riad Abji and his virtuoso cello & tanpura raga, which inspired the duo to create 4 mixes, combining Riad's Eastern lament with classic house and ambient techno. The full release is complemented by the tropical flavours of Into It and Out Of It**. The previously unreleased ambient mix of Web of Intrigue rounds off what can certainly be described as a 'deep' release.

The sleeve art was inspired by a 19th Century Indian Jain painting and created over the course of many obsessive evenings at the height of lockdown (as was some of the audio). Needless to say, the whole project has helped to keep everyone sane through these crazy months...

*The vinyl issue of this release was funded via Kickstarter, hitting its target in a fortnight.
