Matt John - The Keys 2x12"
CORLP034
Cocoon Records
2x12inch28.05.201328.MAY.13

HouseMinimalTechTechno

***2x12" inclusive CD***
Retro was the by far most overworked musical term in all areas house and techno. And well, we have to admit it it: So is this release by our new player MATT JOHN and his debut for Cocoon Recordings. However, this time "retro" works a bit different. It's Sheffield, Warp, the early Hacienda- and LFO-days that are shining through here. No massive link-like-909-programming, no Chicago- and no New-York-house revival and finally not just another London- and Berlin-hipster-soundtrack. We are talking northern sound inspired techno here, dark but hedonistic, analogue synths and for those who remember: A Certain Ratio feeling all over the place! Of course this is what we hear here and what we feel and we have no idea if Matt John did all this on purpose but to be honest: We don't care! This is great, this is good, this is techno as we like it and most important: This is hard to find these days. So let the show begin, ladies & gentlemen here comes MATT JOHN!

HouseMinimalTech

Philip Bader discovered his love for electronic music in 1998 - and it only took a year until he made his debut DJ appearance at the legendary Tresor club in Berlin. It didn't take long before the natural born Berliner earned a reputation as one of the city's most creative minds behind the tuntables, and the next step to production was only a logical progression.

Artifact - The Way It Do / We Trapped
STS010
somethinksounds
12inch11.02.201311.FEB.13

HouseMinimalTechTechno

As the London & Berlin based somethinksounds imprint approaches a tenth release since its inception in 2010 we've learnt that although you can never be too sure of what they are going to serve up next, you can be sure its going to be of the highest quality. Whether it be unearthing exquisitely produced IDM by Lucky Paul, future house sounds from rising stars such as Eliphino and Ossie (Black Orange Juice) or straight up club bangers by some of the biggest hitters in the game (Gadi Mizrahi of Wolf + Lamb); this time they deliver what could be one of the most infectious vocal drops of 2012 on Artifact'¼s sensational double A-side The Way It Do/We Trapped.

For the tenth release somethinksounds step back into a ring where they certainly feel very comfortable and present an artist tipped by many a tastemaker including Clash and also Resident Advisor (in a 'Breaking Through' article earlier this year) to be making big waves soon. With releases on Local Action and Rebirth, Bristol boy Artifact has certainly been making a big noise with his futuristic fusion of house, techno and garage. Put simply The Way It Do is a bold statement of intent. Aimed directly at the centre of the dance floor this one oozes with production finesse far beyond the young producer's years. Skipping tams and snapping snares ride alongside haunting synth melodies whilst the percussion section layers intricately amidst a world of abstract sounds. The tension continues to build until it culminates in a monster vocal drop sure to have people going nuts on the dance floor. Clubbers, you have been warned. It's a double A-side for a reason and therefore the intensity does not let up on the flip with We Trapped providing yet another peak time monster filled with yet more expertly layered, extra terrestrial percussive elements. A tuned rim shot drives the track along throughout but its another very well selected vocal sample which provides the main hook. Hotly tipped Manchester native Damu steps up for remix duties with an interpretation of The Way It Do, delivering an indefinable cut filled with pure analog intensity. Skittering percussion melded flawlessly with bubbling bass lines and otherworldly synth melodies equates to a captivating listen.

Hardly strangers to the scene, Daniel Bortz & Sascha Silber give what could very well be the summer hit of 2011. The 2 track EP titled 'Color Of Love/Fantasy' is incredibly effective in creating a smooth late summer feel, perfect for open air nights. Straight kicks, crunchy snare's, and pressed hi hats, a bassline bounces next to the deep kicks.

Rene Bourgeois - Graal E.p
ACKER32
Acker Records
12inch23.07.201223.JUL.12

HouseDeepMinimalVocalTech

Beacon - The Ways We Seperate
GI-180LP
Ghostly International
12inch16.05.201316.MAY.13

HouseDeepMinimalVocalElectronica

Thomas Mullarney and Jacob Gossett, aka Brooklyn duo Beacon, introduced themselves to the world with the No Body and For Now EPs, both released last year on Ghostly International. The EPs were united by minimalist, R&Binfluenced instrumentation, and also by a lyrical theme, with both serving as meditations on the darkness that underpins the most intense of human emotions: love.
The duo's debut album The Ways We Separate both consolidates and develops these ideas. The album focuses, as the title suggests, on the idea of separation - both within the context of relationships and in a more intimate, psychological sense. As Mullarney explains, "The narrative contained inside The Ways We Separate deals with two kinds of separation: one where two entities grow apart, and the other where we grow apart from ourselves. Over the course of a relationship, the two sometimes happen together, one being the result of the other."
Desires, passions and regrets are central to the songs on The Ways We Separate, which take a variety of perspectives to construct a nuanced reflection on the album's central theme. 'Between the Waves' draws a clever analogy between relationships and soundwaves falling out of phase: "I know all the ways we separate/ Where we start to fade at different frequencies." 'Overseer' catalogues a parting of the ways with discomfiting clarity: "Isn't it fine/ Taking it slow/ Watching you watch me walk out your door." And album closer 'Split in Two' explores how th extremes of love and loss can take you far away from being the person you thought you were, making explicit the connection between the two
ideas of separation: "What I'd do for you", sings Thomas Mullarney, "Split myself in half/ Divided into two."
Musically, The Ways We Separate finds Beacon working with a richer sonic palette than ever before —as Gossett says, "The production on this album is much more expansive than anything thing we've done thus far. We spent a lot of time exploring new gear and experimenting with how to pull a wide range of sound out of various instruments. Some of the key sonics that shaped this LP are analogue synthesis, lots of heavily processed guitar work, and vocal layering/processing." While the abiding mood remains that of late-night introspection, the production draws from elements of hip hop and a wide gamut of electronic music, marrying intricate beats and subtle textures to honeyed pop melodies that belie the album's conceptual depth. Rarely has bleakness sounded so pretty - this is a record that's deceptively, compellingly beautiful, an exploration of a place both discomfiting and darkly seductive.

Dapper vinyl repositories, designed to make you covet that disc - Record Sleeves.... not just glorified paper bags. These are the sounds of Arnaldo: The missing forth member of the Three Muskateers continues his dulcet theme, with murky yet well executed space bumps that flux mercifully around his groove. The new gear accommodates his personal pace, extending musicality with somber melody yielding hefty legroom, enough to work those muscles. Holiday where you can see the Stars sets about to untangle this rather large and looming impendence. Beautifully amending itself into a lulling state of calm. Delicately blasting you into an unknown and distant inner light. The night sky opens brightly, unearthing a spirit in-tuned with the stars, ethereal and grounded - bounded by solid ground. Itssadness can make you feel happy, to cut a long story short.
I left some Groove whips up a frenzy of gentle pace with a firm nod to the end of night throne, which Greta....

El Nino Andres - Mona Ep

Hija de Colombia

Hija De Colombia is putting out its fifth release in beginning of May. Label boss Anton Kordic, releases new EP titled 'Mona' on single 12'' red coloured vinyl, with following vinyl artwork impressive and breathtaking as before. This time it's the work of young German artist Maximilian Moser.

Anton Kordic, who does releases under the name El Niño Andrés, released his debut album 'Mas Dinero Mas Problemas' a year ago, and it was welcomed with lovely words from critics and audience. While the album was acoustic-jazzy-house affair, the new EP focuses on different sound of house music, trying to capture special moments in each of the three original tracks. New EP also introduces Sleep Night, a producer from Ukraine, whose bass driven LP is scheduled for release on Hija De Colombia in 2013.

Denseland - Like Likes Like
MM-021CD
M=Minimal
CD13.05.201313.MAY.13

HouseMinimal

There is a certain type of music that echoes the feeling of a dark promise. It triggers anxiety, and it is precisely this effect that makes it appealing. Such music represents a living contradiction, a threatening attraction, a sounding abyss. And it is fascinating like a Cronenberg film. Denseland's music oscillates precisely within this suspense. Hanno Leichtmann, Hannes Strobl and David Moss had already released an album titled "Chunk". Now they bring us "Like likes Like" with the Berliner label m=minimal and seek to combine everything that belongs together. Rhythmical textures, rudimentary melodies and a clear renunciation of harmonies develop into a lesson on the subject minimalism. It is this sort of rhythmical music that instantly develops into a sense of suction that couldn't be thriftier. The songs produce a deep and chilly effect. And beyond the rhythmical structures appears David Moss' magical Sprechgesang. His voice seems to whisper directly in one's ear. It creaks, it grumbles. It is often nothing more than a murmur that bit by bit assembles a vocal. It then expands and shapes into a sort of singing as ghostly voices breathe in the air. It is precisely this vocal that widely contributes to a feeling of discomfort in the works of Like likes Like. Almost all repetitive music operates on the principle of hypnosis through repetition. Sometimes a song needs a few minutes to unfold its hypnotic effect. On the contrary, Denseland needs only a few seconds. The centrifugal force in its downbeat repetitions becomes practically unavoidable. Denseland's members depict mastery in opening new frontiers. They manage to employ minimal resources with maximum efficiency. Descriptors such as slow motion funk or minimal spoken word noise techno do not live up to the trio's dark and energetic tracks. The band was formed in 20

Morgan Hood - Mega-caller
OAM004
Organic Art Movement
12inch10.05.201310.MAY.13

HouseMinimalTechTechnoDub

Organic Art Movement's newest signing Morgan Hood, serve up a smorgasbord of atmospheric techno, dubbed out textures and staunch analog muscle.
Morgan Hood survey a sonic landscape that explores the intersections that occur within Oramics range of emotions that are both tough and commanding yet nuanced and subtle. These spectral adventures utilise a sonic arsenal that covers a broad range of electronic and acoustic tones peppered with field recordings of electromagnetic interference, echo chambers and static.

In Mega-Caller, course strokes of electronic interference fizz and spray into a silhouette of dubbed out melancholia to form a backdrop to which vast chords emerge without warning and disappear into the ether. The ground is shaken with a monolithic bass that almost threatens to shatter the delicately constructed arrangement of hand recorded claps, particles of static and other electroacoustic oddities.

Potent Techno-Noir anthem 'Safari' compels us to envisage an Orwellian disco. Bauhaus frequencies and Icey reverbs are the order of the day here with chilling pads dissipating into a smoke filled ether. Meanwhile, the low frequency spectrum is driven by a myriad of unpredictable bass excursions, tumbling and waltzing with their percussive cousins; distorted cowbells, murky toms, and a deformed mutant of an acid house loop.

Consider this an unlikely new soundtrack to London's underground.

Early support for Morgan Hood's debut EP has came from Davide Squillace, Arnaud le Texlier, Valentino Kanzyani, Jesse Rose, Tensnake, Troy Pierce, Mathias Schaffhauser, Tim Green and many more.

Deadbeat - Primordia
BLKRTZ006CD
Black Truffle
CD30.04.201330.APR.13

HouseMinimalTechTechno

Originally released on Montreal's long defunct Intr_version label in 2001, Primordia was Scott Monteith's first foray into the album format, and some 13 years on serves as a remarkable document of the driving aesthetic touchstones which even at this early stage were bubbling to the surface and have gone on to define the sound of his Deadbeat project in the many years since. Over the course of 7 colossal slabs of crackling digital atmospheres and rumbling drone, a dirge of muted kick drums serve as the only steady anchor in a sea of wildly unhinged and naive sound experimentation, with the whole lovely mess plummeting into a endless cloud of decaying echos, granular processing, and cracked software reverb plugins. With it's production coinciding with the first years of his tenure at the Montreal based music software company Applied Acoustics systems, Primordia is the sound of the young dub Padawan reveling in the endless possibilities of modular software synthesis, and relishing each and every new discovery and mistake along the way.

Re-released on CD and for the first on lavish double vinyl with remastering by long time friend and cohort Stefan Betke aka Pole, Primordia is an essential cornerstone in Monteith's now vast catalog, and a must have addition to the collection of any serious dub techno historian.

Stefan Goldmann - Live At Honen - In Temple
MACROM33CD
Macro Recordings
CD07.05.201307.MAY.13

HouseMinimalTechTechnoTechno

"Live At Honen-In Temple" is a document of a one-off site-specific performance in one of the most impressive settings a live electronic concert could possibly ever have. Featuring a wealth of new and unreleased material, Stefan Goldmann has custom-tailored a sound world as clearly detailed as the hidden gardens of Honen-In. Microtonal drifts, metallic grids and delicate turns merge into a gleaming monolithic pull. Embedded in the slopes of the Eastern hills of Kyoto, Japan, the Honen-In Temple marks the boundary between city and forest. By day, only its outer gardens are accessible. For this intimate concert, Honen-In opened its doors to a handful of listeners, exposing its intricate inner halls and gardens. Specifically selected and arranged for this night and site, Stefan Goldmann's music goes through an hour of transformations. The side walls of the main hall removed, electronics unobstructedly merged into the surrounding acoustic environment, while daylight faded into the dark of night. This concert performance was part of the Villa Kamogawa artist residency by Stefan Goldmann in Kyoto, Japan.
